Chapter Three: As Luck Would Have It…
Or not… Inuyasha rolled his eyes and groaned deeply, silently pleading to the Gods and asking them what exactly he had done to deserve this fate. It had been two weeks since he had found the girl. Two weeks since he had found out her name, and how old she was. And two weeks since she had last spoken any words at all. No matter what, she always followed him. And whenever he tried to convince her to go to a village, her eyes would well up with big, wet tears and he found himself stammering and unable to deny her wish to stay longer.
Currently she was walking no more than five steps behind him, making sure that her pace fell in step with his. He guessed it was some sort of game she was playing, but he didn't really understand ningen children anyway. After a moment he heard a tell-tale sign of a stomach growling, and he clenched his fist in frustration and looked to the skies once more with a self-suffering look.
Stopping where he was walking abruptly, he wasn't surprised when her small, soft body collided gently with his back. She always did that… she never noticed he ever stopped walking… she was always too busy daydreaming or some such stupid human thing that humans do…
Turning around slowly, Inuyasha eyed his young companion, “Oi, kid, you hungry?” He watched a small blush form on Kagome's cheeks before she nodded slowly.
Well, at least she's getting honest…
Inuyasha sighed and scratched his head. “Okay, there's water that way. Don't fall behind.” He quipped at her slightly, like a nagging mother might and continued to walk.
And his ears twitched when a small sound like resembled tiny bells reached his ears.
She had giggled.
Flushing, Inuyasha whirled around and growled at her, “What's so funny?!” Kagome just covered her mouth slightly, giggling again as she pointed at him. A well of indignation rose in Inuyasha, but he quelled it quickly before anything hurtful left his mouth… he knew she meant it in the best regards. Not once had she mistreated him, or tried to hurt him. But that didn't stop his initial reactions most of the time.
Every so often, he would slip up and call her something nasty in a very testy tone. That would cause her to look at him with wide eyes, and then sadness would flash in them before she looked away. She would stay forlorn for hours, until the guilt ate him away and his nerves were shot and he'd rush out some sort of half-assed apology that would get her shining like the sun again.
Scratching his head, he sighed to himself. Aren't humans supposed to be afraid of me…?
He tilted his head back slightly, peering to the girl from the corner of his eye. Though she seemed somewhat pale, she didn't really have any complaint. She just took notice of him watching her and smiled brightly at him, and he flushed and turned his head away quickly with a clipped, “Keh!”
He recalled the first time he saw he open those blue eyes at him, as azure as the deepest part of the sky, he nearly died of a heart attack. The resemblance was uncanny, and he had stared at her with suspicious eyes.
Inuyasha stared at her wearily as the young ningen girl sat up, completely unaware she was topless before him. He watched her as she lazily gazed around her, before settling her eyes upon his form. Her hypnotizing look caught him straight in, and he shifted nervously under her eyes which roamed over him as if drinking him in. It was in no way sexual, more as if she were taking him into herself.
Weakly, she reached out with one hand to take his ear and rubbed it softly. Inuyasha sat frozen to the spot… usually, he would have knocked anyone away who touched his ears… but the girl looked so similar… he just couldn't. He just couldn't deny her anything she wanted, he knew at that moment he was her prisoner as long as she remained within his presence. She seemed so unafraid, yet so kind…
Nervously, he licked his lips and stammered something… anything… to change he mood he was feeling.
Nostalgia.
“What's your name?” he threw out at her gruffly.
“Kagome.”
He frowned at her, eyeing her slight form carefully. It seemed underdeveloped, and he was sure she couldn't have been more than fourteen…
“How old are you?”
Kagome rubbed one eye with her free hand, her other hand still latched on to his ear. “…Nearly fourteen…”
Inuyasha arched a brow, “When do you turn?”
“When the sky is moonless.”
Inuyasha resisted the overwhelming urge to smack his forehead. It just figured.
“So in about half a cycle of the moon?” Inuyasha inquired, to which she just lazily nodded. He noticed as her eyes lidded heavily, and small tears formed at the edges. “I miss momma…”
At that she fell to the mat in sheer exhaustion from blood loss, and Inuyasha just stared at her with a gaping mouth. He had no idea how to take this ningen child…
Inuyasha's mouth ticked irritably, and he found he still was as clueless about her as the first day she came under his protection.
She had healed quickly thanks to him, but she was still considerably weak. Thanks to the Gods, for though they pierced her chest, they barely missed her heart and lung, for it was lunged upward and very near a her collarbone.
Lowering a discerning brow, he muttered to himself, “Goes to show how much stupid villagers know of swordplay…”
A soft sound of dispersed rubble caught his attention and he whipped around to catch Kagome as she nearly fell down. He lowered both brows this time, concern filling his senses. It annoyed him, but he couldn't help it.
“Keh, you stupid girl… see what happens when you push it? You're too weak right now.”
He heard a small, suffered sigh come from the girl's lips and he sighed himself. “I know, I know you don't like it. But fucking tough, okay?”
He lightly tossed the small girl on to his back, and continued walking down the path to the river. The ease with which he dealt with her crossed his mind in passing, but he chose to ignore it. There was no use fighting over stupid things such as this, and he learned that fighting with himself only sunk him deeper…
Frowning, Inuyasha kicked a small rock in the way on his path.
He felt Kagome's arms tighten around him slightly, but again he ignored that as well.
He just continued off the path and through the forest, and headed toward the river.
~~~*~~~
Inuyasha stared at the girl quietly from across the fire, and she just stared back. His eyebrow ticked in slight irritation at the fact she was so brazen, but he kept it to himself. But the longer they held this contest of sorts, this more his nerves went to hell as they always did with anything concerning her and it was aggravating to him. Usually nothing got under his skin this bad, but she did it well, and without even trying at that.
Biting roughly in to his fish, he chewed loudly in agitation. Amusement sparkled in her eyes, and he scowled slightly at her. If he didn't know better, he would almost assume she was provoking him… but did he really know better?
Loosing his cool at the thought of her making fun of him, he snapped at her, “Nandayo?! What the fuck are you so goddamn interested in, you brat?!” He saw Kagome flinch, and that same hurt look passed her face before she averted her eyes.
Inuyasha gaped, immediately feeling sorry he opened his big mouth. He snapped his jaw shut and clenched it tightly, gritting his teeth.
I'm no good at this…
Punching the ground angrily, he spat out to her, “Look, I'm just tired, okay? And I'm a real fucking asshole, so don't pay any attention to me…” Looking up, he saw her eyes dancing with unshed tears as she looked at him wearily.
He growled lightly, looking away again. He refused to apologize. He never apologized to anyone before, not in over two hundred years, and he wasn't going to start now at some thirteen year old human child.
But surprise came over him when he felt slender arms wrap around his neck, and her warm face bury into his chest. Looking down at her, he sighed gently and patted her awkwardly on the head.
“Look, kid, I'm really no good at this… I don't even fucking know where I'm going…” He watched her raise her head, as she looked at him in question.
“What… I mean is… Well, damnit… I can't… I can't provide you a safe place to stay, where you can fucking grow up all normal. I'm always wandering, I get restless, you know? That's why I say you should go to some village, and be some normal human kid like other kids…” The scent of her growing distress hit him and her gulped, not wanting her to cry again.
“What I mean is, I'm not the best fucking companion, but you can do whatever the fuck you want, okay? But I don't want to fucking hear you whining, all right?!” He concluded quickly, hoping beyond all hope she really wouldn't cry.
And she didn't…
Instead, she gave him a bright smile and hugged him tightly again, as he looked around nervously. Once he was sure it was clear, he relaxed a little and just let her hang on to him.
As long as no one saw, and no one knew, no one could get hurt, right?
Right…
Inuyasha just rolled his eyes, knowing he was only trying to convince himself.
Somehow, he knew, that it was going to be weird now with this girl by his side.
But she'd probably just get tired of him after a few weeks and walk off, deciding to settle someplace permanent… right?
