A/n: I hope you guys don't strangle me for merely updating. I have a chapter sitting on my computer begging to be finished. I'm rereading the story and this chapter was very poorly put together and it left me with a bad taste. I'm rewriting it cause it irritated me. I'm trying to make this story flow smoothly, and I need to remember where I was at. Chapter 6... only 24 more chapters to go. Oi. This is gonna take a while...

Chapter Six: The Same Thing Again and Again

Inuyasha stared blankly at Kagome, half hidden behind a tree as he was eavesdropping on her doings. Perhaps on some level he knew it wasn't right to be snooping, but he had a million and one reasons to justify it. All in his head, of course, and in the land of his brain everything he did made perfect and total sense and he shouldn't feel bad about a single thing he did concerning her to make sure she did what he told her to do because he was the only one in her life with any position to say anything about anything to her... and... mentally, he took a deep breath. That sentence was too much to say, even in his own mind. He simply knew he needed no reason to justify his actions which he was totally sure was completely justified, of course.

...He had hoped that the bow and arrows would come in handy… and currently, she was supposed to be practicing while he went out hunting. Cause, that's what he told her to do. And, to him, he could tell her what to do cause he took care of her. And stuff. In moments like these, he tried to remind himself he was the man, and she was the child he was taking care of, and fed, and clothed, and that she didn't walk all over him with merely a look.

Right.

He groaned, which he seemed to do with increasing frequency nowadays. Inuyasha was sure in the span of the weeks he had been with her, he had sighed more than he had in a century.

And there she was, sitting in the middle of the field, acting downright oblivious to his presence…

Isn't she supposed to be some sort of miko?

He guessed it didn't really matter… cause if she was able to sense him, he wouldn't be able to spy on her like that. Which he had every right to do.

Obviously.

He tilted his head, squinting, bringing his mind to the actual subject of WHAT she was doing and not reassuring himself constantly of his authority.

He tried to ignore it when his brain pointed out that the only one he was trying to prove it to was himself.

"Keh..."

Shielding his eyes from the blazing sun, he was trying to determine what she was doing besides practicing, which he had been trying to do all along. Leering a little, he figured out… she was making flower rings.

He smacked his forehead and resisted a very deliberate urge to do the same to her.

She was stupid sometimes… really, incedibly, undeniably thick.

I can't protect her all the fucking time!

He decided he needed to give her a firm lecture, then recoiled at the thought and grasped the sides of his head. “I'm not good at these things! I'm not her fucking father!!"

Inuyasha then scratched his head dismally, allowing one hand to fall away from his cranium while the other threaded his fingers through his hair and pulled it in aggravation.

This is what he got for allowing a ningen girl to travel with him. He had to raise her in some awkward sense of the word, obscured of course by his ingeniusly stunted nature.

… But he wasn't ready for any sort of pups! Even nearly fully grown ones!

Because apparently while she was on the cusp of sexual maturity, her brain wasn't comprehending the fact that the world fucking sucked and she couldn't be lost in Lala-land.

Decided it was just best if he was blunt with her, he turned around and began to storm across the clearing…

His nose twitched.

The air changed.

Wrongness settled in his gut with the force of a punch.

A very sudden jyaki interrupted him, and a youkai came storming out of the forest towards Kagome…

And it was closer to her than he was.

“Shit! Kagome!” he called out to her, breathlessly, hoping she moved.

Hoping she knew how to use those stupid sticks with metal on the end to defend herself.

Hoping that she did something other than sit there.

And she did.

Her scream rang throughout the air, and sent a chill through his bloodstream, freezing it in his arteries.
And that was all he needed to be sent bolting.

Running through the field, petals of flowers were sent flying into the air in his wake as he headed straight for the youkai that pinned Kagome to the ground. She was squirming, and crying… her distressed scent was sent sailing straight into his nose on the wind, unfreezing the terror that had previously taken hold of him and making his insides boil with outrage.

She was terrified. The youkai terrified her.

He was going to maim it.

But he couldn't ignore what the oni said next, ears twitching in horrified disbelief, wishing he had heard incorrectly, wishing... that wishes no longer existed in the world.

“You have the Shikon no Tama! I smell it! Where is it girl?!” it roared at her, causing Kagome to cry out in panic, backing as far away from it into the earth as she possibly could. In the span of less than a moment, she had wrenched a hand free, and that was when time seemed to slow…

Inuyasha's eyes widened perceptibly as she lifted her hand to the oni's face. She screamed out his name, and the field was filled with a bright pink light…

He flinched, recoiling and stopping in his tracks. He brought up his arms to block out the light, but it temporarily blinded him.

He wasn't sure what had happened, and even after he had blinked out the spots that clouded his vision… he could not see the oni.

All there was in the field was a quaking Kagome, who looked up at him with tearful eyes and cried.

“See what I told you?! What did I tell you?! I told you to practice… and if you'd been practicing like I had told you to, you'd be fine!!” he snapped at Kagome, who whimpered pathetically as he tightened the bindings on her wounds a little bit tighter to prove his point. He knew it was a bit mean, but he had to get it across to her that she couldn't be careless like that, especially with her life at stake. Especially when he was too far away to do anything. Especially when she looked so scared and so helpless and so small and so fragile and so breakable and... knew that it was all wrong.

All of it, all he thought, it was all wrong.

He knotted the bandage with a jerked motion and released her arm from his grasp.

Inuyasha growled low, standing up and beginning to feel that familiar anger with himself. He was disgusted. He didn't deserve to have a ward, or a charge… anyone to take care of… He was too pathetic, not strong enough to care for anyone properly…

He couldn't even protect her from scum. Hell, it was laughable.

She took care of it herself.

“I should have just left you in a village…” he snarled at her, feeling even slightly more bitter when she cringed at his harshness. He knew she was upset, he could smell it… And the tears that were gathering in her eyes, the ones she was refusing to shed were the ones that hit the nail on the head of his proverbial coffin.

He glared at her, feeling so much guilt, so much repulsion with himself that he needed to redirect it. He couldn't deal with the self-loathing…

“Besides, what the fuck are you doing with the Shikon no Tama?! Huh?” he was shouting… he knew he needed to stop before he said something he regretted. But the anger was burning in him, and he didn't know what to do with it… like molten lava, slow and scorching and burning everything in its path. Unstoppable.

Something he was familiar with, something that destroyed everything and everyone he touched in his life.

It was just too easy to point a finger at someone who couldn't even yell back.

Her confused look hit his core, and he misunderstood it, assuming she was surprised he knew about it.

“Yeah! I know what the fuck it is! Why do you have it?!” She shouldn't… it was supposed to be gone.

Kagome shook her head, holding up her bare hands to him… pleading with him to understand, that she didn't comprehend…

He could see it in her eyes.

I don't have anything. I didn't do anything. Why don't you believe me?

“Don't lie to me! I know you do, why else would some piece of shit claim something like that?!” he grabbed her wrist, yanking her up to face him. Kagome just shook her head again, a few tears falling down her face, looking more broken and betrayed than anything else.

He growled at her, dropping her on to the floor of the cave unceremoniously, trying to ignore the smell of honesty and hurt radiating off her. She wasn't lying…

How could Kagome have it…

It was burned when she died in that fire…

Inuyasha flinched at his thoughts, trying to quell the memories that were threatening to consume him alive in the ashes of his rage.

He stared down at Kagome, once again struck with the familiarity of her face. Even the flush of her indignant look, the defiance she had towards his accusations… it stung him deep.

He knew he was wrong…

He just couldn't admit it.

Snarling again, he turned and ran from the cave. Though he had no intention of leaving her completely alone, for that was what caused this mess, he just couldn't be near her…

Not then, when she was a ghost of something he wished he could rip from his existence.
