Chapter Fifteen: Expect the Unexpected!

"Inu-YASHA!" Kagome screamed out at the top of her lungs, freaked out and downright furious as the monster grabbed her easily around the torso with one hand like she was an appetizer-which Kagome was more than sure was his intent.

"Let me go, you ugly bastard!" she cursed at the ogre angrily, pounding her fists ineffectively against his hand to try and make a statement. She was serious.

The ogre just smirked at her. "You're definitely one fine meal, otome."

As the creature eyeballed her, apparent drool building up in the corner of his mouth, Kagome felt herself cringe away.

That was just plain gross.

"Scream for me again, otome. You amuse me," as he said this, he clenched his fist tighter and Kagome felt her ribs groan under the pressure as the air flew from her lungs.

She went from angry to scared.

"Inuya...sha..." she wheezed, wondering... where was he? Shouldn't he have been there by now?

Did she really wander that far away?

She gasped as his grip became tighter, and her vision began to swam. "I said scream, otome!" the monster bit out at her, shaking her like a rag doll.

Scream? She could barely breathe!

Wait...

I... I can't breathe...

Kagome felt a definite crack from the pressure, pain searing through her.

This wasn't good.

Feeling herself getting angry again, she attempt to struggle, to force the ogre to loosen his grip. She couldn't breathe. She was panicking, prying the best she could.

The world was becoming dim, and Kagome hunched over, desperately grabbing the monster's wrist with her hands as he laughed at what he deemed her futile attempts to save herself.

Suddenly, Kagome felt herself getting very hot... so hot, she burned. Her hands felt like they were on fire, and she didn't register as she was thrown to the floor. Her vision was going dark... the inhumane scream passing over her, an outraged cry...

Someone calling her name...

And nothing else.

~~~*~~~
Inuyasha arrived in time to watch the beast throw her on the ground as if she burned him... and it appeared, she had.
The skin around his wrist was smoking heavily, and the ogre screeched in anger. He lifted his foot and appeared as if he was going to crush Kagome's head, but Inuyasha was too quick for him.
Darting forward, Inuyasha scooped Kagome up into his arms just in the knick of time as a heavy foot came crashing down where her head had been just a moment before.
Leaping what he proclaimed a safe distance a way, he gently laid Kagome down and moved to stand in front of her.
Ready for a fight, Inuyasha watched as the ogre stared at the ground and bellowed furiously yet again, and began looking around for Kagome. Inuyasha watched as he looked to his left... to his right... upward...
What the hell...?
To his right again... under his foot... he turned around in a full circle...
Inuyasha gaped and very suddenly got very annoyed.
Was he so easy to miss?
"Hey stupid! I'm over here!"
With much surprise, the oni turned his way and gaped.
"Yeah, that's right. Why don't you pick on someone your own size, you overgrown prick?!" Inuyasha lifted his claws up in clear threat, grinning as the oni reacted with aggravation.
"I want my meal back! I found her first!"
Blinking, Inuyasha took time to register that comment.
...Then, he backtracked.
"WHOA, whoa! I am NOT going to eat her!"
Unexpectedly, the oni lifted his head in reverence and nodded his head in approval at him as the thing grinned a nasty grin.
"Ooh. So the hanyou wants to breed? I suppose I can let go a meal for such a thing. I hear hanyou get desperate. I will look elsewhere."
Inuyasha should have let him believe that. Inuyasha should of let the thing go because, by the grace of Kami himself, a youkai had shown what might have been interpreted as compassion to a hanyou. It was an unheard of thing. It was a rarity, a sign of times changing, a revolution.
Unfortunately for Inuyasha, he didn't take it as such.
He was bright red. He was in shock. He was stammering. He wasn't moving.
He was a statue.
Emotions raced through him.
And sadly, he could not stop himself from a very common ailment among humans. It was a sign that he was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a hanyou.
He had diharrea mouth.
"That's NASTY! I wouldn't touch that bitch!"
As untrue as it may have been, his manly ego dictated he wouldn't have it any other way.
The ogre's anger returned full force, and he rounded on the hanyou quickly as Inuyasha realized what may have been a mistake, though he would not admit it.
"Then why did you take the ningen from me?! I am hungry! Give her to me!"
Oh shit.
Faster than the monster could blink, Inuyasha withdrew his Tetsusaiga and brought it quickly down in an arc on the oni.
"Kaze no Kizu!"
The smell of blood hit Inuyasha as the oni shrieked, and Inuyasha jumped off to the side, moving away from Kagome and in clearer view of the oni.
Assessing the damage quickly, Inuyasha noted the monster had one arm less.
"I'm not gonna play! I'll fucking kill you for hurting Kagome!" snarling at the ogre, he quickly unleashed a second wave. More blood spilt, audibly hitting the floor with a morbid splash.
Inuyasha sneered as with a loud thud the body hit the floor, and Inuyasha knew it was over.
"Too easy for too much trouble," he grumbled to himself, turning quickly to Kagome and running to her side. He sniffed tentatively, trying to assess any unseen damage by smell.
He saw no blood except a minor nose bleed that had already ceased.
Kneeling, he looked her over and sniffed again, his nose crinkling because an odd smell... a burnt smell...
Frowning a bit, he lifted her hands. They were bright red, and even appeared burned. Remembering the scene he came in on, he blinked. Kagome must have unleashed her miko powers...
But it was rare for it to be so strong.
And... it just reminded him of that day...
The oni came after her for the Shikon no Tama...
Shaking his head to clear confused thoughts, he knew he could think about these things later. At the moment, Kagome was top priority.
Gazing at her face, she was flushed. Her lips parted to let out shallowed, pained breaths, and her brows were drawn together. Growling deep in his chest, he lifted her into his arms bridal style.
I'll never let you out of my sight again, Kagome... this is my fault...
Her head lay against his chest, and he noted the more he moved her, the more she whimpered. There must have been more damage then he originally suspected....
Concern filled him, and he began to walk away from the corpse of the ogre.
He had to find someplace to rest... a village...
He shuddered.
Ears flattening against his head at the idea, his mind protested, but he knew it was necessary. He didn't have the supplies with him to care for her... Cursing his stupidity and their luck, he headed back toward the location of their arguement.
The reason she left in the first place...
Guilt welled up in him, and he snorted, trying to quell the feeling. He couldn't control Kagome, he knew that. She was a hard-headed, stubborn, compulsive ningen female.
But that didn't stop this nagging feeling of him being at fault for her condition.
I am supposed to protect her...
His thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a randomly familiar sound.
"Brrrroooow."
That noise could only mean one thing.
Inuyasha looked down.
And a big fat cat with a big fat mouth that opened to whine at him again was the sight that greeted him.
"Brrrooooooowwww."
Frowning, Inuyasha reclined his head toward Kagome.
"This mode of transportation is full. You'll have to walk, fattie."
That answer didn't seem to satisfy the Buyo.
"BRRRoooow."
Inuyasha's frown progressed into a glower.
"Whatever. C'mon fattie. As long as you shut up, I don't care."
To say he was surprised was the very least that could have been said when Buyo jumped up and attatched himself to Inuyasha's waist, using Inuyasha's clothes to make his way up to Inuyasha's shoulder, where he then laid himself down and began to pant.
Glaring at the cat, he grumbled, "You'd better be thankful Kagome loves you, damn cat."
Sighing, Inuyasha just began to leap away, using his sense of smell to find the nearest human village.
~~~*~~~

Kagome groaned.

Her head was pounding.

Her ribcage felt like it had been ripped to shreds.

Her back ached.

Her nose was stuffed, and her mouth tasted like blood.

The world was too bright, too loud, and far too annoying.

...Put simply, she wasn't a happy camper.

"Inu....yasha..." her voice came out muffled, cracking as she spoke.

...She was so thirsty...

Slowly covering her eyes with one hand, she began to search around just as tentatively with the other. Confusion settled in as her fingers skimmed a rough surface that was very similar to wood... moving further along, she felt a woven mat... a tatami mat...

...She was indoors...

Lifting her hand to her chest, she ran it downward... she felt bandages...

What happened?

"Inu..." she choked out again, then coughed.

It hurt to cough.

...hell, it hurt to breathe.

Sucking in a sharp breath, she tried to roll over onto her side.

She was unsuccessful, and it just caused a sharp pain to stab right through her, shooting from her toes all the way to her head.

Freezing, she very quickly assessed the best thing was to move as little as possible.

That prospect made her nervous.

Inuyasha wasn't answering her.

So... she was alone.

And she couldn't move well.

...and she was indoors.

She swallowed hard, beginning to feel nervous.

Trying harder to understand her situation, she opened her eyes. Only problem was that the room began to swim and caused horrible nausea.

Shutting her eyes rapidly, she whimpered.

By now, panic had set in.

Raising her voice, despite the scratchy quality, she called out weakly, "Inuyasha...?"

Though she did not get an answer, she heard heavy footsteps and two voices. One spoke in low tones while the other seemed to growl.

It wasn't hard to guess who the one growling was.

Inuyasha...

"I come here, I kill youkai that threaten your village so I can stay here with her, and you fucking have the balls to tell me to get out?!"

The person who answered sounded nervous, wary...

"Please, I do not mean offense, but the villagers are becoming nervous..."

He was cut off.

"Fuck the goddamn villagers. They'd all be dead if it wasn't for me."

The man ignored Inuyasha, continuing to talk as if nothing else had been said.

"...because they are unsure your intentions with the female... some demand you leave her here... it's the very least I can say for you to take her and go. There were men talking of using force with you..."

Inuyasha grunted.

"One thing is for sure. The girl stays with me. No one can take her. Is that fucking clear?"

The reply was a shaky one.

"...crystal clear, Inuyasha-dono..."

Silence followed for a moment or two, tension apparent.

"Besides, it's not like they can take her anyway. How were they planning to?" Inuyasha grumbled. He sounded more annoyed than anything.

"They were speaking of a monk in the area..."

Inuyasha snorted, "Keh! Like some goddamn bouzo is gonna stop me..."

Silence reigned again.

Kagome strained a minute, wondering if the conversation was over. But she heard shifting, the floorboards creaking under the weight outside the room, and she heard the unknown man question Inuyasha.

"...are you going to go, then, Inuyasha-sama?"

Inuyasha was quiet temporarily, before he answered.

"...only because I don't want to cause you trouble. Don't get me wrong, Jiji, I didn't need your help. But you let her stay here for as long as you did... Tell the Baba thanks for caring for her."

Kagome gasped slightly.

She had never heard Inuyasha sound that way before.

...so grateful...

"...Don't speak that way. She would have been in serious trouble if not for you, young man."

She noted Inuyasha didn't respond to the statement, but changed the topic instead.

"We'll be gone by morning."

That was the end of the conversation.

Kagome heard the shoji door slide open, heavy footsteps entering as it was shut. There was no movement for a few seconds, and then the footsteps made their way over to where she lay.

There was a rustling of clothes and a sudden movement, followed by a small thud.

He had sat down.

She was going to speak, was going to let him know she was awake... but a soft touch shocked her out of it.

She felt a rough hand cup her cheek gently... a thumb smooth over her skin, claws intertwining in her hair...

Her heart began to beat rapidly, a fluttering in her stomach catching her off guard. Her breath hitched in her throat, and just as quickly as she felt the touch, it went away.

Licking her lips nervously, she began to fight with herself.

Should I say something? Should I do something...?

Why was it such a big deal?

He had touched her before...

...just, not quite like that...

It was...so...

...gentle...?

And it made her feel so... so...

...anxious?... what is this feeling...?

She felt nervous.

And by the way Inuyasha sounded, she wasn't the only one.

"...K'gome...? You awake...?"

The innocent question seemed so hesitant.

She knew there was no reason to not reply. He knew better.

"...yes..."

Whatever she had been expecting, the words that came out of his mouth next were definitely not them.

"You fucking idiot! You nearly got yourself killed!"

Bristling instantly with fury, Kagome squeezed her eyes shut against the pounding migraine she had. She couldn't even clearly remember what happened, so how the hell was it her fault, whatever the hell he was talking about?

"Whatever happened, it's not my fault!" she managed to half-heartedly shout back. The effort did not even nearly match the anger she felt. Her throat was just too dry to sound effectively angry.

"How the hell was it not your fault?! You walked off by yourself, in the middle of the woods, way farther from me than you should have and-... damnit Buyo, go away!" she heard a garbled meow of protest and the scrambling of claws across the wood.

"Don't take it out on the cat!" Kagome snapped.

She may have not been able to shout, but she could still effectively sound like a bitch.

"I'll do whatever the fuck I please!" he clipped right back at her.

"Buyo has nothing to do with this! Just because he's a hair-brained idiot for loving you doesn't mean you can torment him!"

"Keh! No body in their right mind loves me, baka! You don't know what the fuck you're talking about! He's just goddamn annoying!"

"That's not true!

"Yeah it is!"

"Then I'm out of my mind!"

"He is fucking annoying so shut the fuc....what?"

Kagome felt her jaw slam back into place so quickly it felt like her teeth were about to shatter.

Breathing rapidly, she noted how thick the air was... it was tangible, palpable... edible.

What did I just say...

She heard the tell-tale sign of rustling clothes, and very suddenly felt breath span its way across her face.

Inuyasha was apparently very close.

And her surprise caused her eyes to open, despite the motion sickness that followed.

Golden suns pierced her, and she was unable to look away. They looked harsh, disbelieving... puzzled.

"What the fuck did you just say?"

Kagome's heart jumped into her throat, and she almost felt like she was choking, feeling a very pressing need to move away from him. But with the pain, and the way his body leaned over hers... she had no where to go.

She was stuck.

She had to cover her tracks, save face.

"I'm fucking out of my mind for putting up with your stupidity, that's what I said."

Squirming in discomfort, Kagome wanted to look away. Wanting to get those burning eyes off her, eyes that gazed right through her.

Eyes that made her feel things that scared her.

Things she didn't understand.

Things she didn't want to understand.

Things that were just too complicated.

She knew he knew she was lying.

That wasn't what she meant.

That wasn't what she said.

He just stared at her, far too close for her comfort zone, his mouth in a grim thin line.

She tried to read what his face was saying, what his eyes were telling her.

But before she got the message, he leaned away.

She let go of a breath she didn't know she had been holding.

She felt disappointed, almost...

But why?

What had caused such a drastic reaction in her?

He had seen her naked. He had been with her through the most vulnerable of her times. He had seen her sad, seen her dying, seen her sick, seen her scared, seen her angry.

He had been there by her side, constanly, for more than a year. He had taken care of her, fed her, clothed her, provided shelter for her. He had even taught her things she wouldn't have even thought of otherwise...

He was everything for her.

So what made her feel that way so suddenly?

Turning her gaze toward him slowly, a very clear feeling came through her confusion...

Fatigue...

She was too stressed... too tired to deal with these things... in too much pain...

"Don't fight it. Go to sleep Kagome."

He sounded so neutral... it worried her...

There was nothing behind his voice...

For once... she couldn't tell what he was thinking... feeling...

It perturbed her.

He was hiding from her.

...don't hide from me... please?

"...demo..."

A soft touch on her forehead soothed her frazzled nerves, causing the exhaustion to be the most forefront thing on her mind.

"Sleep. I'll be here in the morning."

She didn't know what made her ask. She felt a pressing need to ask it though. It was too important to let go.

"...promise...?"

"I promise I'll be here."

He didn't even hesitate.

"....always?"

"...."

Kagome's heart clenched for a moment when she thought he wouldn't answer her...

But she was reassured by a gentle tone.

"...Always..."

And that little bit pushed her into the depths of the darkness that welcomed her.
