Silver Light in the Heart of Darkness

Chapter 2:

Secrets of the Heart

"Every time I look at you the world just melts away

All my troubles and my fears dissolve in your affections

You've seen me at my weakest point but you take me as I am …

You make me feel less crazy when otherwise I'd drown

But you pick me up and brush me off and tell me I'm ok."

Sarah McLaughlin ~ Push

He continued down the hidden path to the springs and thought about the first day he had met her, waking up from the spell Kikyo had sealed him with. He had wanted to kill her then, confusing her with the other woman.

-- "KA-GO-ME, not Kikyo, Kagome!"

--

He watched the springs not far ahead, hearing Shippou telling Sango that Miroku was just looking out for them and her threatening to clip his ears for saying such foolishness, he grinned at that comment. Things had definitely changed since he met Kagome. First of all, he would have never been a friend with any of these people 50 years ago, he trusted no one usually but Kagome had opened his heart to the possibility that all men were not all that evil. He sighed. She was making him soft.

He took off his clothes at the spring and stepped into the water, still deep in thought about her. Kikyo had been his first love, but it was a superficial love, it may have ran deep and had respected the miko but he never deeply lusted for her like he does Kagome, she never wanted a hanyou as a lover and always talked of changing him into a human so they could be together. Kagome didn't seem to care in what form he was in, she was happy to be here, with him. He watched the Monk try to sneak a peek at Sango, who was still trying to dress Shippou and got a slap in the face, Inu Yasha let out a laugh. *Stupid Monk*

Inu Yasha lifted his head and looked at the stars, Kagome was always fond of the stars. She always talked about how in her cities you can't see them anymore because of the bright lights from the area. She loved everything in this period but complained about a few things, like hot showers and what ever a "day at the SPA" was. Her time still confused him. He closed his eyes and let himself drift to the day he discovered he loved her deeply, so deeply he thought he was going to be swallowed by it.

--

"I want to stay by your side." She looked up at him, with sadness in her eyes.

"You'll stay with me?" I was shocked… after all I had done and how I had pushed her away, she still wanted to be here with me… "Can I?" grabbing his hand, her eyes asking him the same question. "Can I be with you even if I know your true feelings?" she smiled a little, comforting my uncertainty. "I will never leave you alone Inu Yasha, I promise." --

He had finally realized at that moment how he had been wrong to deny her his love and his full protection because an old promise with an undead woman. It kept him from being able to love her, to make her his alone. He would make it up to her once Naraku was dead and Kikyo was at peace. He just wasn't sure how … *wasn't sure about what? That she still wanted me? … no something el…*

"You're awful quiet," commented the monk. He got a menacing growl in response for interrupting. *Ok! Mister Grumps has returned* thought the monk, looking at the hanyou intensely, wondering what had made him so thoughtful tonight. He recalls how Inu was hanging over Kagome, there was something about the way he had growled that had prompted him to distract the dog demon. The funny thing was that he never sensed the monk come close to them.

"No." said Inu Yasha in a voice that was edged with boredom and anger.

"No what?" asked the monk, confused.

Inu Yasha opened his eyes, looked at him and said in a bored voice "I will not bare your children so STOP LOOKING AT ME like that!"

*Miroku sweatdrop*

Sango had made her way back to camp; she looked around and sensed nothing out of the ordinary. *Stupid monk … what a lame excuse. It almost insults my intelligence. * She held the kit close to her, Shippou had already fallen asleep after his cold bath and she smiled on him. Sango could see why Kagome had grown affectionate towards the little fox, he was much more wise in his age compared to another dog-demon, who was more daft than a summer breeze. She laid down next to the campfire, cuddling the kit and unable to fight it any longer she promptly fell asleep.

It crawled on the forest floor, deep in the darkness. It was sensing something close to it, an urge was driving it forward. A light flickered in the distance. It squinted its eyes and grinned with menace. *Human flesh… I smell magic. * It continued to crawl towards the light, towards their camp.

He was an old spirit, so old his scent was that of the forest, barely noticeable unless you were right on top of it. It approached camp and noticed the two humans asleep by the fire. It had released a scent that would of put them in a deep sleep without realizing it. It smiled. The one closest to the fire had a slight aura of magic to her, just what he needed.

Inu Yasha grabbed the monk and their clothes; he wondered how he had managed to fall asleep in the spring, considering how cool it was. The monk was still passed out as he carried him to camp, fighting his sudden fatigue. He sniffed the air, wondering if a youkai had appeared but there seem to be nothing out of the ordinary. He could see the camp fire at the end of the path, concentrating on keeping his feet in front of him, he didn't notice the silent shadow move away from him, back into the forest. Inu Yasha hadn't even realized that his senses had been a bit duller; he was just so damned tired. He dumped the monk in his bed and made his way to the lump by the fire, he wanted to talk to Kagome about where the next Shikon shard could be.

He grunted, this tired feeling was making everything slow, he had a hard time trying to keep the woods from spinning; each step was sluggish. *What the Hell is wrong with me?* He reached Kagome and before he could fully recognize what was happening he fell, on top of her but something was odd, there was nothing there*Oh gods* he thought before his mind was swallowed by the darkness *where is Kagome?*

***

There. She saw it. A silver flash in the darkness around her. She wasn't sure where she was, all she knew is that it was dark and she felt alone. She was trying to remember what had happened but her mind drew a blank. She wanted her weapon, to reach for … *for what? Why can't I remember? And what the hell is that light I keep seeing?* She wanted to scream, she was frustrated that her mind wasn't cooperating with her. There was something important happening but she couldn't understand it.

"Why aren't you here?" she said out loud *wait, who's supposed to be here? Why do I keep thinking that?* She was confused. There. Again. The silver flash. She squinted her eyes, trying to make it out. It seemed to flow, not like water but like *hair? Why would hair be silver?*

A light over came the darkness and suddenly she couldn't move. Like a movie screen, she could see a girl and a boy… no not a normal boy, he had dog ears and she had to fight the urge to laugh and rub them. Her heart recognized him and she felt a sudden and over whelming feeling of love for him. "I remember you…" She saw images of her time with him, only the happy memories they shared, the near moments of intimacy and she was happy.

*That's it miko, let the memories fill your empty mind, soon you will be broken and your spirit will be mine* the old spirit smiled as he withdrew from her mind her happy memories of Inu Yasha. He had removed all of her knowledge of the love Inu Yasha bared for another and her feelings of understanding. He wanted her emotions to be extreme so she would have her magic peak at its full potential. Miko's magic worked in coordination with their emotions and the stronger the feeling, the more devastating the effect. He let a sly smile cross his lips, he would never reveal to her why Inu Yasha could not be with her and hide her understanding of it.
