Sing For Me Chapter 1

Turning the lock over and slowly opening the door, Kagome peered inside the front door to check and see if anyone was in the living room. Not seeing anyone she came in, closed and locked the door back, then took off her shoes. She was being careful because she was 2 hours past her curfew and she knew it. She had just lost track of time while she was out with her friends at their favorite club, Midtown. There had been a karaoke contest tonight and she had won first place, with a trophy and everything.

She was almost to the stairs and thought she'd actually be able to make it to her room when she saw a light in the hallway come on and she saw her mother's shadow.

`Shit!' was the only thing that ran through her mind at that moment because she knew she was caught.

“Kagome? Are you just getting home? Where have you been?” her mother's voice was laced with concern and worry.

“Yea, we kinda lost track of time, sorry.” And that was it, she couldn't think of anything else to say since she hadn't really planned on getting caught.

“Honey, is everything alright?” A deeper voice chimed in.

`Double shit!' Kagome knew what was coming now. It was time for her dear old step-dad to butt-in and settle the situation. `Bastard…honestly what does she possibly see in him?'

“Kagome, are you late again? I thought we talked about this last week. Honey, you can go back to bed and I'll talk to her.”

“Ok, I'll see you in a few minutes. Good-night Kagome, dear.” Her mom said as she hugged Kagome, kissed her husband, and then turned around to go back to her bedroom.

Once she saw her mom shut the door to her room, Kagome started “Look Mikaru, I know I'm late. Like I said we lost track of time. There was a karaoke contest at Midtown so I entered and even won first place, see?” she said holding up her trophy for the bastard to see.

“Now listen to me you little bitch, the only reason you aren't out of this house yet is because your mother actually loves you and that brat brother of yours, I personally don't like either of you. As for singing karaoke, don't you know that karaoke is for people who think they can sing but can't? All you're doing is making a fool of yourself in front of a bunch of people. Don't you think that it's a little strange that if you're so good of a singer that you haven't gotten anywhere with it other than singing in clubs?? Face facts, you're not good enough and you never will be!”

“You son of a bitch! Where do you get off telling me what I can and can't do?” at this point Kagome was in tears because she knew that her step-dad had some good points. Why hadn't she gone anywhere with her singing? “And just for the record I hate you and have no idea what my mother ever saw in you. I think you're nothing but a cold-hearted bastard and always will be!” Kagome yelled in his face with tears streaming down from her eyes. She honestly did hate him; she always had ever since the day her mom had brought him home. She didn't like yelling at people but he just always managed to piss her off so much. He had been trying to break her mentally for years…but this time, he might have actually done it. Singing was the one thing Kagome prided herself most on, but now that she was starting to doubt herself her confidence was dashed so were her dreams of going professional.

But all the thoughts of her dream future that were currently flying out the window were cut short as the sound and feel of flesh on flesh resounded and her back met the floor. She wasn't completely surprised since this wasn't the first time he had hit her or Souta, it just shocked her a little because she had been in thought.

He had slapped her pretty hard this time and she could already feel the bruise forming on her face. Before she could get up or say a word he grabbed the front of her shirt, lifted her off the ground, and slapped her again. “How dare you even try to talk to me like that? You're nothing but a little bitch and I'm the adult who pays for all your worthless shit! If you ever speak to be like that again I WILL KILL YOU!! Do you understand me?!”

“Yea, ok,” Kagome mumbled. “Now will you put me the fuck down?!”

Kagome cringed as she hit the wall after being thrown. Getting up she glared at her bastard step-father as she limped up the stairs to her room. On the way up she heard Souta's bedroom door open and by the time she got up to the top of the stairs she could see Souta sitting with his back against the wall outside her door waiting on her.

“Oh God, Kagome. Wait and let me go get the first aid kit.” Souta said as he ran to the bathroom.

Kagome went into her bedroom and set her trophy down on a shelf then laid down on her bed. “Souta,” she said as she heard her brother come back in, “we have to get out of here. You know it just as well as I do. We can't stay here or one of us if not both are going to end up dead.”

Souta was completely quite. He just sat on the bed looking at Kagome's bruises as they got darker and more discolored. He knew his sister was right, but he had no idea of where she thought they could possibly go. Their mom wouldn't leave Mikaru, besides it would be too hard for her to try and take care of two kids on her own. It was times like this that he missed his dad more than anything.

“Do you remember Grandpa? Dad's dad? I've been talking to him for a couple of months now. Don't tell Mom; she doesn't know about it. I told him everything about what's been going on. Even after Mom married Mikaru, Grandpa still looked out for us, checking in every now and then until Mikaru threatened to call the police for harassment. Grandpa never liked Mikaru. Grandpa said that if we ever needed to we could go live with him on the family shrine in Tokyo. I'm leaving tomorrow and I want you to come too. If I go I can't leave you here.”

Souta was shocked. He remembered Grandpa but just barely. He did remember that he had always been a little eccentric but loved them and their mom a lot. At first he just sat there but after Kagome sat up and he looked her in the eye's, one of which was currently forming a black and purple ring around it, he nodded his head and hugged her.

“Alright. Tomorrow is Saturday I'll wake you up early before Mom or Mikaru get up so you can pack. You know my friend Hojo from school? Well I asked him if he would mind giving us a ride to the train station. Grandpa will meet us tomorrow afternoon at the train station in Tokyo. We'll finally be out of this house. I love Mom and I'll miss her but I can't stay around that bastard anymore. You go to bed, I'll be fine. We have a long day tomorrow.”

After that had been said Souta went back to his room after telling Kagome good-night and Kagome sat in her room in silence. She picked up a picture of her family before their life went to Hell. It had her, her mom and dad, and Souta as a baby. They were all in front of the old tree at their Grandpa's shrine. Everyone was smiling and having fun that day. “Dad, I wish you were still here. Why did you leave us? Me and Souta need you so much right now.” With that said she lay down on her bed, picture clutched to her chest and cried herself to sleep. Maybe tomorrow a new life would start for her and Souta. Maybe things could get back to being somewhat normal. Only two things would be majorly changed. Her mom and dad wouldn't be there and she wouldn't be singing anymore. After coming to a realization made by Mikaru that her singing wasn't taking her anywhere she silently vowed never to sing again.

Ok, so what do we think so far? This may be sad and violent at times, but there will be happier days ahead…oh, and just to clarify, I based the character Mikaru on my own step-dad (Mike). No worries, he's never hit me, but only because he knows that my mom wouldn't hesitate in killing him if he ever did. But the arguments are going to be things where I'm drawing from personal experience. Hopefully because of that it will make the story more emotional and flow better. Well, happy reading to everyone! Let me know what you think!
