Chapter 1:Achromatic
She was invisible. She wasn’t your usual, typical high school student
Large, slouchy black hoody covered her frame and was always pulled over her visage giving her an androgynous look. This made it hard for others to distinguish if she was a boy or girl, and would always end up in a bet.
“She’s girl.”
“How can you tell?”
“She’s too scrawny to be a boy”
“I bet you $5”
“Deal”
It didn’t help matters that this hoody was complimented with baggy green cargo pants with oversized cuffs that dragged along the floor, creating holes that her feet would constantly trip over. She wore old, black Converse that were hammy-downs from an older male cousin. Hence, they were two sizes two big, forcing her too walk heavy and funny. These heavy, awkward steps were required or she would be end up out of her shoes and face first onto the floor.
*Crash!*
“Watch were you going, dork?” A student replied as they stepped over the invisible girl that tripped face first onto the floor…..out of her shoes.
This was her life. She was invisible.
She hid behind her clothes like a hermit crab, rarely coming out of her comfort zone because of the fear of what was out there. She sat in the back corner of all her classes. No one noticed or acknowledged her.
She was invisible.
Then after school she would immediately ride her bike back home in hopes of being safe behind the doors of her secluded sanctuary. There no one could judge.
She wasn’t the typical high school student and neither was her room.
Dark, gloomy. Gray, black tones made the room to appear dungeon like. Despite it’s drabness, it was eerily spotless. Not even the typical clutter that most teenagers had appeared in her space.
She liked it like this.
Feeling content she stood in front of her bed facing the opposite wall. She looked up to the ceiling and watched in amazement as it started to tilt backwards until she was supported by the plush, comforter her bed had to offer.
She liked to do this.
It was her way of trusting her surroundings. If she fell, she knew her bed would catch her. Cradle her. Support her.
Her eyes remained fixated on the chipping paint of her ceiling before she eventually drifted off to sleep.
Then next day at school started off the same way it always did. It was normal for this invisible girl to be concealed from the public. Today she wore a large t-shirt.
It was her favorite. It belonged to her dad.
It bared the logo of a rock band named, “Deadless” . As a kid she wasn’t fond of their grungy music, but after her father died, it was all she listened to.
The shirt devoured her small, scrawny frame. The color tainted with old age making it eggshell when it should be white. It did, however, reveal her heart shaped face and her unruly dark brown tresses that were contained under a dark sock cap. Since her usual hoody would hide this.
To match, of course, were dark cargo pants that had similar holes in them comparable to her green ones. All of her pants had these holes. The outfit was topped off with her signature Converse. One false move and….
*THUMP!*
“Watch out, dweeb!” A student shouted as he hopped over the girl, that fell face first….and out of her shoes.
“Hey, Itzuki, watch out she’s just a girl.” A rough voice exclaimed.
“I doubt it. My bet is still pending.” Itzuki said before walking off.
“Hey, are you okay?” The voice asked, now seeming more gentle.
The invisible girl looked up and became entranced into the hot pools of topaz that were her hero’s orbs. Long, whitish hair held in low ponytail with a sock cap similar to hers ont top of his head. His ruby lips were moving, but no sound was registering to her ears.
“Hey, I asked if you were okay?” He asked again.
She couldn’t speak, but only nodded instead.
Then he smiled.
And it caught her heart as it thumped loudly in her chest making her whole being resonate.
“Good, you’re Higurashi, right?” He said as he effortlessly lifted her up from the ground.
Again, she nodded because her voice was too afraid and left her behind. It probably went to her third period, since she was late.
“Sato Ichiro.”
“Here!”
“Watanabe Tomoko.”
“Present!”
“Higurashi Kagome.”
“…here.’
Students looked around after hearing the squeaky voice but found no figure that belonged to it.
“Don’t we have fifth period together?” The golden eyed boy asked.
Kagome remained quiet. Hoping to catch up with her voice later.
“I think we do. I’m InuYasha.”
No response
InuYasha rolled his eyes at her awkward silence. He looked down to her bare feet then his eyes traveled to her size 27.5cm Converse. “You know. Your feet are really big for a girl. Be careful next time, Higurashi.” He said before turning around and walking away.
“Eeep.” Kagome squeaked as her voice decided to join the party. Her heart thumped and her breath caught. She looked down to her bare feet. She wiggled her toes before smiling
She was in love.
