Prologue: The End that Started the Beginning

She had been running through the forest for hours, her eyes blinded by tears, her thoughts and actions by pain. The further and longer she ran, the more the forest blurred into a never-ending landscape of greens and browns. She didn’t no where she was going, but she really didn’t care. As long as she could escape the pain, she run forever.

She was running deeper into the forest until an ever-lovin’ tree root that seemed to always be there tripped her and she fell face first onto the forest floor. She let out a sigh of frustration as she struggled to get up. When her ankle, on cue, started to throb she just gave up. As she looked around, she noticed that she was completely unfamiliar with this part of the forest, but she wasn’t surprised. She had been running aimlessly for Kami knows how long, so being lost was just an added bonus.

As she sat there she began to think about her life and how pathetic it had become since she had been pulled into that well that day. Even though she was trying to think of how bad it was, she couldn’t help bu think of al the good that had come out of it also. She had gained a bond with four people that was deeper than the deepest ocean, and that lasted longer than forever. Now it was all gone, and she could never get it back, no matter how much she wished to be otherwise.

She had met a hot tempered hanyou that was rough, rude, and violent; but at the same time, caring considerate, and kind when he wanted to be. She had befriended a lecherous monk with a black hole in his hand that looked death in the face every day with a smile; that contained wisdom way beyond his years and carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. She had met her sister, an orphaned tajiya whose only companion was a fire neko and whose only comfort was the fact that her brother still lived, even if he was under the influence of evil. An orphaned kitsune had come to her in search of comfort and she gave it to him ten fold. After a couple of months, he became her adoptive son and she loved him with all her being. And now, they were all dead, except Inuyasha.
~*~*~*~*~*~
It had been fine. After they had defeated Naraku, Miroku and Sango had finally gotten mariied and Sango was pregnant with their fourth child. Inuyasha had continued to live with her along with Shippou, who was now almost as tall as she was. It all happened so fast, it was still a blur in Kagomes’ mind.

Sango and Miroku had been visiting from the demon exterminator village when a rouge bear demon bounded out of the forest shouting,”The Shikon no Tama! Where is the Shikon no Tama?!”
He turned in Kagome’s direction and sneered, saliva dripping from his decaying teeth. “If you hand over the jewel now, I’ll try to make it less painful when I eat you,” he spat.

Kagome was shaking in fear but his threats did nothing to her resolve. This was the third demon in a week and her patience was wearing thin. Instead of dignifying him with a response, kagome just notched an arrow and aimed it at his heart. His eyes flicked from the arrow to her eyes and what he saw was frightening, but no bitch with an arrow was going to get between him and the ultimate power.

She watched his vision flicker and she let a satisfied smirk grace her features. But that smirk vanished as soon as it appeared when a blood curdling scream pierced the air like a bullet. She whirled around to find Sango collapsing on the ground, blood spurting from her stomach. After that she remembered seeing Shippou in the bear’s claws, trying to escape. She ran over to the bear demon in an attempt to get there in time, but just as she got there, the demon bit down on Shippou’s small body and ripped it to shreds.

“MAMMAAAAAAAAAAAA!” was the only thing she heard as the bear dropped his lifeless form to the ground where his blood pooled around him. The world she knew shattered around her like a broken mirror, and the pieces fell like shining daggers, piercing her repeatedly.

“Bakuyurrah!” The twisters of light came forth from seemingly nowhere and tore the demon apart, but it was just a distant echo in the recesses of Kagome’s mind. To her nothing mattered except the mangled body that had once been her son. She slowly walked over to him, all the while hoping that this wasn’t happening, that this was just some twisted nightmare and that Inuyasha would say,”Get up wench we ain’t got all day!” and nudge her with his foot.

She kneeled down beside his broken body as she reached out to touch him, to feel his skin one last time before it got cold. Tears stung the backs of her eyes as they scalded her cheeks. She was so wrapped up with him that she didn’t notice Inuyasha come up behind her and place a clawed hand gently on her shoulder. She looked up at him, her form practically radiating sadness and despair.

After they had buried Sango and Shippou, Inuyasha asked where Miroku was, and as if on cue there was an explosion and a strangled cry. They didn’t have to think because they already knew. Miroku had let his Kazanna suck him in because he couldn’t stand the prospect of life without Sango. Neither Kagome nor Inuyasha heard Miroku say this, but they both knew it in their hearts.~*~*~*~

After Sango and Miroku’s children were told, Kagome began to draw into herself, drifting further and further into a void, not giving any signs that she would return. This is why she thought Inuyasha finally left her for Kikyo, but she was too far into the black hole called misery to care.

She slowly crawled to the base of a tree and leaned her head against the rough bark, a
silent tears streaked down her face.
