Chapter 1
“Sesshoumaru!” InuYasha shouted as he slashed through yet another ogre, blood spilling all over his cloths.
“What is it now pest?! Can't you see I have no time for you?!” Sesshoumaru shouted back. Another group of ogres came over the blood-covered hill and charged.
“What the hell do you think your doing?!”
“I'm trying to get rid of these impudent beasts!”
“ Not that! I meant what are doing going on a journey and not taking me.” He stabbed his sword through the stomach of yet another ogre. “Not that I would want to go.”
“InuYasha now is not the time.” Sesshoumaru used his youkai speed to kill seven ogres at once, while being careful not to get blood stains on his shirt.
“Fine but when we get back you are telling me!”
Sesshoumaru didn't answer only continued to slash through the ogres that seemed to never end, with numbers far beyond counting range.
`Where are those boys?' InuTaisho passed back and forth in front of his thrown deep in thought.
“My lord, you must not worry. Prince InuYasha and Prince Sesshoumaru are well capable of taking care of themselves.”
InuTaisho stopped his passing and looked at his faithful retainer.
“I know, Akio, but they should have been back hours ago. Tonight is the night the royal ladies of the court come to the palace and the night InuYasha and Sesshoumaru are to choose a mate. They need to be here on time or it will cause the other lords to think that the western family is a bunch of lazy slobs.”
“With all do respect my lord; I am confident that your sons will be here on time. I am only a little worried that they will not choose a mate.”
InuTaisho let out a deep and long sigh. “I understand your reason for concern. InuYasha has always been the picky type and Sesshoumaru has never cared much for women.”
“I hope for the best to happen my lord. I really do.”
“Me too my friend. Me too.”
“So what are you planning on doing for the ball tonight?” InuYasha asked as the two prince's road back to the castle on their mighty steeds.
“I will not be attending.” Sesshoumaru answered flatly.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?” InuYasha raised his voice.
“There is no need to shout. I will be leaving tonight before father finds out.”
InuYasha smirked evilly at this. “So my perfect older brother and fathers pride and joy is going to sneak out without father's permission.”
“I have no need to go to this gathering and find a mate. I do not wish for female company. And do not need it.” Sesshoumaru spat.
InuYasha threw his hands up in defeat until something hit him.
“What happens when you caught?”
Sesshoumaru turned around to face his younger brother and smirked evilly.
“You will see that does not happen.”
“I will not. You get caught, it's your problem.”
“I think not. If I get caught then so will you.”
InuYasha lifted an eyebrow and looked at his older brother in a suspicious way.
“What do you mean?” his voice held nothing but suspicion.
“You are not only that is aware of your little midnight strolls in the castle looking for fathers swords.”
Shocked InuYasha let out a sign and finally accepted defeat. “It appears that once again I have failed to out smart my perfect older brother once again.”
“Half-brother and yes it appears so.”
“Half-brother and yes it appears so.”
InuYasha stuck his tongue out and pouted all the way back to the palace. `He's such a jerk.'
Sesshoumaru noticed his brother's state of complaint and sighed long and loud. `Will he ever grow up?'
“WHAT ON EARTH WERE YOU TWO DOING?!” InuTaisho shouted in furry.
InuYasha flinched at his fathers' volume of voice while Sesshoumaru just looked bored.
“F-F-Father w-w-we wer-were just out on a stroll and r-ran into some ogres that slowed us down.” InuYasha tried his best to not let his fear show, but his voice betrayed him causing him to stutter.
“You two are due to be down in the ball room in thirty-minutes. And please be presentable.” InuTaisho left the room without another word but continued to his thoughts.
`I will never understand the way those two work. Maybe if their mothers were still alive than they would be more sensible and think about things before mindlessly heading off into battle. I don't want to lose them. Not now.'
Leaving his thoughts at that the mighty TaiYoukai fixed his posture and was announced into the room filled with royal youkai.
A tall okami youkai with dark brown hair and a tail down to the back of his knees walked up to him. “Taisho how good to see you again.”
Smiling InuTaisho nodded “It is good to see you as well my friend. How have you been Lord Yuudai?”
The TaiYoukai laughed lightly. “Taisho how many times have I asked you to call me Yuudai I hate the term `lord' it makes me feel old.”
InuTaisho's grin widened “Well last time I checked four thousand years was old.” He said while failing miserably to control his laughter at Yuudai's expression.
“Three thousand is just as old Taisho.”
“Yes, yes you are right.” InuTaisho replied after his laughter had died down.
“Where are the guests of honor?” Yuudai asked curious as to what the reason for the two princess' state of absence this time.
“They had better be getting ready. Those two just got back about fifteen minutes ago with some ogre army excuse.” He shook his head and continued, “I sometimes wonder what they really do on these expeditions of theirs. I am afraid that they might be too dangerous for them to go into absent mindedly as they have done."
“I understand my friend, but don't you think that they are old enough to do what they please and not have a fathers worry stop them.”
“ That is true but I am worried about them. Sesshoumaru has remained his cold and emotionless self since his mother died, InuYasha cannot control his temper, and sometimes I think that he does not want to. The only thing those two have in common is the fact that they don't want anyone to know that they are weak.”

“I think that finding a mate will be good for them. Let's just hope that they choose wisely.” Yuudai said while pointing to a group of himes behind him.
“Yes lets all hope that this one time they use their brains.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The night was cool with the moon in the center of the sky.
InuYasha and Sesshoumaru were walking silently across the courtyard to the stables, being careful not to be caught by the guards.
“Sesshoumaru are you sure you want to do this?” InuYasha whispered from behind Sesshoumaru as they hid behind a bush avoiding the gaze of the two guards that walked by.
“Quite you baka.”
“All I was trying to do was….”
“Shhhhh…”
“Shhhhh…”
InuYasha huffed silently and continued to follow Sesshoumaru to stables.
The horses were staying silent as the two walked quietly into the stables. They stopped in front of a large black horse with a white crescent moon on its forehead.
Sesshoumaru mounted the mighty beast and looked down at InuYasha with a serious and dangerous gleam in his eyes.
“See too it the father does not know where I have gone. If you fail you will pay dearly.”
With that said and done Sesshoumaru raced off into the darkness of the night with InuYasha still standing where he was before looking at his half-brothers retreating form.
`I only hope that I will survive all the himes at tonight's ball with out my brother. And I wish you luck you crazy bastard.'
He walked out of the stables and through the courtyard only to stop at a statue of a ningen woman dressed in a seven-layer kimono. She was very beautiful and had the appearance of an angel when the moon light hit her.
`Mother I only wish you were still here. I need to talk to you and father never listens. Sesshoumaru doesn't even care. I need someone to talk too. I'm not ready to take a mate, father just doesn't understand.' With one last sigh, InuYasha prepared to face his doom and all the hime inside ready to pounce on him.
Sesshoumaru rode through the forest at lightning speed trying to get as far away as he could from the palace before morning.
`I should make camp soon. Surely, Isamu is tired by now. Lazy horse.'
Once he reached a lake far enough away from the palace he pulled back on the rains and jumped gracefully off the horse.
Looking at his reflection in the water Sesshoumaru averted his gaze to the Quarter moon. One word came to mind as he gazed at the silver rock in the sky, letting one lone tear fall from his cold and emotionless eyes he whispered the on word that came to mind.
“Mother.”
