Chapter 32 - Relationships
*The Sun Lies Down* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)
"So," Kagome started, unsure of what exactly to say. "Do you want a relationship?"
"I would not have gone to all this trouble otherwise," Sesshoumaru replied.
"Trouble?" she repeated, slightly annoyed by his word choice.
"You must understand; I have never before pursued a female. I would not have done so if you were not worth the trouble." He paused for a moment, considering his words, before continuing. "I must know. Why did you ignore and avoid this Sesshoumaru?"
"Because you're scary," she answered without a second's hesitation.
"You fear me?" That thought disturbed the taiyoukai more than he would have liked to admit. He wanted this female as his own and if she feared him that would never happen. His heart ached in a way he had never experienced before and he hoped that she meant something, anything other than that.
"Not really, but you're unpredictable. I had no way of knowing what you wanted or how you would react from moment to moment. I decided flirting with you was a dangerous game, one I wasn't going to play anymore."
"I would never harm you," he said in his most reassuring tone, which wasn't all that different from his usual monotone, considering that he'd never tried to be reassuring before. Not even with Rin had he attempted that particular tone. When she woke from nightmares, he would simply allow the child to curl up in his lap, never speaking a word. He knew he'd failed in his goal when the miko smirked at him.
"Sure, until I said something that pissed you off. I had no idea what we were even doing. I never imagined you to be a flirt."
"I never have been."
"But you are now," she said while shifting slightly in his arms. "Don't take me back to camp yet. I think we need to have a talk."
It was Sesshoumaru's turn to smirk as he turned on his heel and headed in a different direction. He had no problem with having a little private time with Kagome. It was hard to come by and he would enjoy every second of it, so long as it didn't end with her telling him they couldn't be together.
The sun was just beginning to set when he arrived at his destination, a pond rimmed with sakura trees. The petals were just starting to fall, floating on the surface of the water that sparkled and reflected the oranges and reds of the sunset. Kagome gasped at the beauty as Sesshoumaru reluctantly set her on her feet.
"So, tell me, what do we have to discuss?"
"We have to figure out what we're going to do, what we're going to be."
"I am going to court you and you are going to continue to use that tone of yours with this Sesshoumaru."
"Oh, well that clears it right up," Kagome said sarcastically.
"I thought it did quite nicely. Now, do you still desire a massage?"
