Inuyasha's eyes snapped open suddenly as his whole body started trembling. His heart was beating wildly in his chest and his eyes felt the sting of unshed tears. He swallowed hard and tried to hold it back. Those eyes. Those dull and frozen eyes that were staring at him. His mother's eyes. Even now, the memory of his mother's death still haunted him. He still remembered the day she died, in a same blizzard as this, trying to get him to shelter. And he couldn't do anything to help her.
Then he felt someone warm next to him. Even in her sleep, Kagome was still comforting him. Unconsciously, he pulled her close, resting his chin on top of her head, trying to brush off the nightmare. The image of his dead mother. He inspired her sweet scent, mixed with the scent of illness.
-`Kagome's illness brings back bad memories' he thought sadly.
Dawn was just a few hours away, and from the sound of the wind, the storm wasn't as powerful as before, reducing to just a murmur. He returned his attention to Kagome and put his hand on her forehead. She wasn't as hot as before, the capsules succeeding reducing her fever.
Inuyasha hoped that, by morning, the storm will totally stop, and he could be able to go out and search for some medicinal plants and some food. From the sounds his stomach was doing, he sure needed something to fill it.
He returned to watch Kagome. Her hair was shining even in the darkness with a blue reflection. His mind drifted to Kikyou. Her image from 50 years ago. She was so full of life then, and he wanted to remember her like that. But now, the spark of their love has disappeared. Her body was now cold, and held the smell of grave earth, reminding him of her loss. Now he could see that spark in Kagome. It wasn't the same as in Kikyou. It was brighter, purer. He wanted to be surrounded by it, but he knew he didn't deserve it. He still owed Kikyou. He knew that he still had to kill Naraku in order to revenge Kikyou. But, what will happen after? Will he go with Kikyou to hell, or will he stay here with Kagome? No, he knew he couldn't stay with Kagome. He was a hanyou. Kagome was…Kagome. He knew he couldn't be with her. Who would want to be with someone as him? He knew that Kagome will go to her world when her task of collecting of the Jewel shards will come to an end. But will he resist without her? He remembered when she ran off when he decided to protect Kikyou with his life. He had missed her. Missed her presence around him, her scent, her voice, her smile…he was afraid to tell her what he was feeling. When she was away, the beads around his neck felt like weights. She always returned to him, even if he didn't deserve it.
-`Why did you always return to me, Kagome?' he thought as he yawned, sleep clinging on to him again.
He had broken her. She deserved better than that. He remembered her when she came back. She looked as before she left…but she said that she wanted to be with him. He closed his eyes and sighed tiredly.
-`Kagome said she wanted to be with me...'
Inuyasha's body slowly relaxed in anticipation for sleep, his thoughts blurring together in a haze.
-`Why? I don't deserve it...'

Inuyasha returned a few hours after sunrise, his arms full of supplies. The storm had stopped a few hours earlier, and gave him the chance to go out in search for some medicinal herbs, food and some flint-stones.
Kagome hadn't moved one bit since he left. Her scent hanged thick in the room. He put his hand on her forehead and surely her fever had returned. Luckily for him, he had the ingredients he needed for the tea his mother used to make when he was ill. He began to pull apart one of the rotten chairs and tossed them in the fireplace. He managed to make a fire, the warmth delighting his skin. Now, he began to prepare the herbs for the tea. They smelled worse as he remembered. He remembered how his mother tried to make him drink the tea and not to whine. Now he was happy that Kagome was in his place. A small smile came upon his lips when he remembered the attention his mother gave him when he was ill or on his moonless nights. He shook his head, trying to come back to reality.
He used the kettle Kagome brought with her to make the tea. He waited for the water to become warm enough before he could put the herbs that he grinded earlier. When it was finished, he filled a tea cup and brought it to Kagome.
-“Kagome.”
She remained motionless in the sleeping bag until Inuyasha forced her to sit up. Her eyes slowly opened and blinked at him, but remained unseeing.
-“You've got to drink this.”
He held the cup to her lips and managed to pour a little in her mouth. He shifted his hold on her and tilted her head back to rest on his shoulder, and poured a little tea again. She then started to cough as she choked with the tea.
Inuyasha waited until she cleared her lungs before he proceeded to give her the nasty thing. He had to give her this every hour, until the fever disappears.
He repositioned himself behind her, her flesh slick from sweat. Commanding in a loud voice, he ordered her to drink the tea or else. It was an empty threat, but he didn't know what else to do and he was starting to feel frustrated.
She remained limp, as if she didn't hear him. Inuyasha sighed and poured again a little tea silently pleading her to drink it. To his relief, she swallowed it.
-“That's good, Kagome…you're doing great.”
He managed to get her to drink all of it, and after that he wrapped her tight in her sleeping bag.
His stomach rumbled loudly, and he knew that breakfast was still waiting him. Knowing that he had done his first task, he turned his attention to take care of his own person and fill his stomach with fresh rabbit meat.
