Disclaimer: I don’t own Inuyasha, nor the song Voodoo by Godsmack. I do however, own my very crappy laptop, and the brain that came up with the twisted idea.
So Far Away
I’m not the one who’s so far away,
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I want to be here again,
And I don’t remember why I came.
Something called them to this spot, something sinister. It sang to them, urging them to confront it in their weakened state. They shouldn’t be here. Kagome had reminded them of the fact several times, but as they entered the clearing, she chose silence and tending to the large wound in her abdomen over speaking again. She noticed that they all had sustained some type of mortal wound, and knew that trouble was inevitable. As soon as they had entered, they knew they couldn’t leave, only stand and face what lie ahead.
Candles raise my desire,
Why I’m so far away.
No more meaning to my life,
No more reason to stay.
A frown was marred on her features as she took in her companions expressions. The warm-hearted Miroku stood stock still, clutching his wind tunnel tightly with a deadly expression on his face. He would die here, and all knew it.
She turned her gaze to Sango, whose face held little emotion, but eyes revealed the storm of conflict. If Sango couldn’t save Kohaku, there was no saving her. Kirara stood poised next to her master, ready to lunge at anything that opposed them. Her eyes held a fire that was mirrored in everyone’s.
Freezing, feeling,
Breathe in, breathe in…
I’m coming back again…
Even Kikyo had managed to present herself at this battle, but her own steely gaze was not directed toward the enemy approaching, nor towards her former love. It was directed towards Kagome. Even if she did not utter the words aloud, Kagome deciphered the look in an instant. She would have another battle ahead of her, if she even managed to survive the first…
I’m not the one who’s so far away,
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I want to be here again,
And I don’t remember why I came.
And for some reason, this did not bother Kagome in the slightest. Before, Inuyasha had urged her to remain in the village along with Shippou, but she had to refuse. She would not allow herself to be saved, if it meant all her companions dying. Still, Kagome was scared. The fear radiated off her in waves, along with a fierce determination to do some damage going down.
Hazing clouds rain on my head,
Empty thoughts fill my ears.
Find my shade by the moonlight,
Why my thoughts aren’t so clear.
She was surprised however, by the amount of rationality everyone seemed to maintain while the evil landed ahead of them. Everything seemed to be still. Kagome didn’t understand. Inuyasha hadn’t moved, nor had any of the others. Silence reigned, and even Naraku seemed to be fearful of breaking it with his declarations of death. It seemed that such declarations had already been made clear, but for whom…it wasn’t certain.
Demons dreaming,
Breathe in, breathe in…
I’m coming back again…
Then, as if someone had thrown a switch, or given an unknowing cue, the end began. Inuyasha had unsheathed his sword and lunged toward Naraku with a feral cry. With a cry of ‘Hiraikotsu!’ Sango’s boomerang was released towards the hordes of demon that surged toward them, led by none other than her own blood. Miroku had relinquished his hold on the wind tunnel seconds later, after he had managed to escape to a safe distance. And, she - Kagome, watched it all with an arrow drawn, before finally letting go, watching as her arrow followed the path made by her rival’s seconds earlier.
I’m not the one who’s so far away,
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I want to be here again,
And I don’t remember why I came.
Kagome had drawn another arrow, but let her stance falter as she noted a scene farther away. The wind howled, but this wind was foreign, and possibly more condemning than Naraku himself. Raging from within the palm of the monk, she watched in morbid fascination as he fell to his knees, his arm stubbornly held outward towards the demons that threatened. They seemed to sense the nature of the hole, and began to flee. It was in vain. The gap expanded and the shrieking of the wind and those being pulled in grew to almost deafening roar.
Miroku’s pained expression turned towards the cause of all his trouble’s, and in that instant, when the crimson gaze of the devil fell upon the holy monk, Miroku laughed. Kagome would never know if it was the laugh of a madman before being imprisoned, or the laugh of one searching all his life and finally finding peace, because he was gone. All that was left in his wake was a large crater, and the now recognizable sounds of battle.
I’m not the one who’s so far away,
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins.
Never did I want to be here again,
And I don’t remember why I came.
Despite losing the second most important male in her life, Kagome did not cry. Instead, her gaze shifted towards that of the demon slayer and her fight with the brother, in which Kagome already knew she would lose. But Kohaku, in the last moments before striking down Sango, turned the blade on himself. As he fell limply to the ground next to his sister, Kagome thought she could faintly hear her friends strangled cry. The slayer had picked up his still form, and hugged it close to her chest. They eyes of Kohaku fell upon Kagome from over Sango’s shoulder, and the foreboding nature was enough of a warning for her.
She steadied her arrow towards the tentacle that had found itself being urged towards Sango and she released, staring as it shattered mere seconds before piercing the woman’s armor. Sango looked towards her gratefully before picking up her Hiraikotsu and urging her way once more into battle. Kagome knew there was hope for the demon slayer yet, especially with Kirara still managing to fight beside her.

Never did I want to be here again,

Inuyasha however, was not faring as well as she had hoped. The hole in his arm from their previous battle seemed to be weakening him greatly, and his attacks were becoming fewer and further between. He seemed to realize this as well, and when another tentacle once again found its way towards a target, he ran. It seemed he hoped by taking the brunt of the attack, he could save the intended recipient of the attack.
The appendage ripped straight through him, and before he fell to the floor, he shot Kagome one last desolate look, as if hoping to say everything he never said. Seconds later a body shattered on top his fallen form, and a bright light emerged from within. One small little flash made it’s way toward Kagome, and disappeared within her. His efforts were in vain. And that’s when Kagome knew what was to come.

Never did I want to be here again,
And I don’t remember why I came.
It all seemed to arrive with clarity, such apparent clarity, that it surprised her she hadn’t done it before. With an amount of grace and strength Kagome wasn’t aware existed in her, she stood, and dropped her bow, taking a step towards Naraku. He however, was busy trying to get ridden of a stubborn Sango, who was trying desperately to give Kagome the time she needed. Kirara lay in a small pile behind Sango, having already reached her limit. The faint glow that had surrounded her arrows, now surround Kagome herself, and the light increased as she herself quickened her pace.
She was close now, meters from Naraku. As he finally managed to knock the slayer unconscious, he turned towards her, but he was to late. Kagome leaped towards him, and he emit a loud desperate wail before she even managed to latch on. He flung wildly, not prepared for such an attack, and tried to use his appendages to rip her away. The tentacles disintegrated before even penetrating her body.
Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
Voodoo, voodoo, voodoo, voodoo.
And then, Kagome did something she wasn’t sure she wanted to do. She looked upon the face of what she thought was the embodiment of evil itself, and emotion filled her. It wasn’t hate, nor was it regret or pity, but…love. She hadn’t done this as revenge, but to make peace with her fallen comrades and Naraku. They would all finally be at rest with what happened, and be able to move on. Now all Kagome needed to do was stop thinking and do it.
She called her very soul from her body, and in her last moments, plunged her hand through Naraku’s heart. The silence that followed was eerie, the silence that comes after a devastating storm. Both bodies collapsed to the ground, and as Sango awoke, she saw a dark orb being absorbed into the larger one, and a flash erupted. After the blinding light had faded away, she used her boomerang to prop herself upright, and make her way shakily towards the fallen couple.
So far away…
I’m not the one who’s so far away…
I’m not the one who’s so far away…
I’m not the one who’s so far away…
It didn’t surprise Sango to see the completed jewel lying bright and clear atop the two bodies. Her hand reached out, wavering before it grasped the priceless item. All the death, all the pain, all the despair, for that one tiny orb. She stared hard at the jewel, ignoring the blood at her feet and pain in her joints. Sango knew her wish, and she could only hope that her friends would agree with her desire.
Her breath rattled, and she collapsed to her knees, forcing out a harsh whisper.
“I wish the jewel would cease to exist.”
And as she fell to the ground, she smiled, knowing it was finally over.
