Chapter 8: Quietly Tense
Stopped for Camp, Japan
Feudal Era, Tuesday, Late Morning, Day 12
Everyone in the caves was quiet. This quiet wasn't a tense quiet, but a nice relaxed quiet.
Jan was flipping through the pages of her spell book, trying to find a way to have the others make homunculi. The only thing she found was how demons could make a few homunculi by letting them feed off of their magic - if they knew how to tap it. Sesshomaru knew how to tap his, but only enough to use his two swords and to prevent his poison from killing him. `Big. Freakin'. Help.' Jan thought.
Sango was watching over Shippo and Rin, and Sesshomaru was sharpening the blade on one of his swords. Jaken was unconscious; Jan felt plenty fine to knock him out and change his opinion of humans. Rin didn't really understand it, but `Lord' Sesshomaru had told her that it was necessary, and she accepted it.
Miroku was watching Inuyasha and Kagome with rapt attention, so everyone figured they were making out. “Miroku, why are you so perverted?” Jan called.
“Why, I am not perverted. I'm just trying to... watch out for them.”
“Sure. Nothing will get through the shield I put up around the site.”
He snorted, and turned his head back to the scrying bowl. Squinting, he looked into the bowl, nose almost touching the surface. “How... How accurate will this spell be?”
Jan looked up. “The spell is only keyed to one specific area. Why?”
“Because there's someone else in there. I can't tell who.”
“That can't be possible!” She leapt up, and rushed over to him. “Zoom in, unidentified consciousness. Magnify, distinguishing feature. Magic scan.” The surface of the water rippled, and the intruder filled the bowl, face large. A small box off to the side started listing magics in the area.
“Kikyo!” Miroku said.
“I thought Kagome said she was made of clay? The scan shows that the barrier was still up, and nothing had disturbed it. The anti-teleportation shield is still up, too, last interference by me with an object.”
“Kikyo was destroyed by Naraku, and now comes back as a spirit.”
“Why didn't anyone tell me about this? The shield only keeps corporeal beings out, not ghosts!!” She looked at the woman, Kikyo, who was talking. “Volume, on.”
“...I should be mad, jealous, protective, or flattered, Inuyasha.”
“Kikyo...” Inuyasha voice came from off of the screen.
“Zoom out, encompass area.” Jan ordered the spell.
“I think I'll be protective, Inuyasha. You are mine, after all. Although I'll also be amused. Trying to make do with this copy of me? A weak copy, an imperfect one. We shall be together soon enough, you know. You don't have to go and try to substitute this girl for me.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Smooth comeback, Silver,” Jan said to the image.
Kikyo threw back her head and laughed. Everyone except Sesshomaru shivered.
“I am here for you, Inuyasha. You are mine. You love me, not her, and you are mine. She is just a replacement, and I don't want to see her hurt. You still need her to find the jewel shards. I can't be around to help you all the time, you know. My copy is the only jewel detector you have.”
“I'm not your copy, Kikyo! And Inuyasha doesn't love you. He loves me!”
Kagome was red faced, and, if looks could banish spirits, Kikyo would have been gone for good. Instead, since looks can't do anything, Kikyo laughed again. “Is that what he told you? My, my, you'll believe anything. If he truly loved you, he would have marked you quite some time ago. He's had time, you know; longer than he had with me before I died.”
“What's she talking about, Inuyasha?” Kagome turned to him.
“I was working on it!”
“What's she talking about?”
“A mate's mark.”
“What. Is. It?!”
“If you didn't even know about it, he probably wasn't going to tell you. Or mark you. How sad, isn't it, Copy?”
“She's not your copy, Kikyo!”
“Yes, she is. She's my reincarnation, and that's the only reason you're attracted to her. She smells almost exactly like me, and she sounds like me, and she looks like me. She has the powers to control the Shikon Jewel, and she has my priestess powers.”
“What do her powers have to do with it?”
“Our power comes from our soul, Inuyasha. Our identity. If her powers were mine, then she is me.”
“Why are you here again?” Inuyasha's expression was hard to read. It reminded Jan of Sesshomaru.
Kagome was trying hard to hold back tears. Inuyasha didn't notice. She was backing away from him and Kikyo slowly.
“To keep her away from you.”
“I don't need you babysitting me, Kikyo.”
“I am just looking out for your interests, Inuyasha.”
“You were spying, like a jealous girlfriend.”
At Inuyasha's comment, Kagome burst into tears and fled away from the two.
“Kagome!” Inuyasha turned to Kikyo. “You bitch! You couldn't stand to see her have something you never would, could you? I hope you rot in hell, Kikyo. I never - Never! - want to see you again, or I won't be responsible for what happens.”
“Off.” Jan sat down on a bench, and rested her head in her hands.
“What's wrong, Kechara?” Sesshomaru snickered at Rin using his nickname for Jan.
“Nadea is what you should call me, Rin.”
“What's that mean?”
“It means... well, it has a lot of meanings. It is an old word for mother, but is also used for a nurturing female by someone younger than them.”
“Oh. What's wrong, Nadea?”
“Inuyasha messed up all the planning I went through to get Kagome to trust him. He broke her heart.”
“Why?”
“Because he's an idiot. He didn't mean to, but he just didn't watch what he was saying, and he said something stupid.”
“Oh.”
“Kechara, it's not your fault.”
“Yeah, it is. I should have put up a spirit shield, too.”
“You didn't know.” Sesshomaru sat next to her. “I didn't even know.”
“Like you would! You never had a chance to run into her, Sesshy.”
“Oh, and how would you know that?”
“Guys, not important. We need to figure out a way to salvage the situation.” Sango had already pulled out a box of tissues from Kagome's backpack.
“Tell her that Inuyasha's an idiot, and that a dog demon marks his or her mate when they mate?” Jan suggested.
“And how do you know that, Kechara?”
“It's in the demonology part of my book. I got bored, and started reading the demon part. You're in there, I think, but not by name or picture. Probably by land mass owned in 2005.”
“Still not important!” Sango chucked a stone at Jan's head.
“All we can do is wait and get the tranks ready, so cool it.”
“What are `tranks'?”
“Short for tranquilizers.”
“Oh.”
The room dropped into silence. This time, it was tense.
Moving Towards Camp, Japan
Feudal Era, Tuesday, Late Morning, Day 12
“Kagome! Kagome, wait!” Inuyasha ran as fast as he could after the girl.
`Damn Kikyo! She ruined the date. She hurt Kagome! I hate that bitch! Kagome can run fast, too. I should tell her that.'
He could see Kagome in the distance, and sped up. “Kagome! Wait!”
She kept on running, and he cursed. A million things rushed through his head. Things he should have told her, what he should have said to Kikyo, things he shouldn't have said, like the jealous girlfriend remark.
`Yeah, that was a bad move.' He thought.
Finally catching up to her, he stopped right in her path and grabbed her arms. “Don't run!” he said, then felt like an idiot. `Why'd I say that first?'
“I'll run if I damn well feel like it, Inuyasha! You have no right to tell me not to run!” She jerked at her arms, trying to get him to release her.
“I need to explain things to you!”
“Like how you lied to me about Kikyo?”
“I didn't lie to you about her! I told you the truth. I don't love her!”
“Then why did you call her your girlfriend?”
“I meant a jealous ex, Kagome! I don't love her, I love you!” He tried to make her look into his eyes, to see that he was telling her the truth, but she refused to meet his gaze.
“No, you don't! You think that I'm just a stand-in until Naraku's dead and you can join her! You think that I'm only good as a jewel detector!”
“No, I don't think that! Where did you get an idea like that?”
“You didn't say that I'm not! You just let her say those things, and you didn't defend me! If you loved me, wouldn't you have defended me?”
“Okay, I'm an idiot! I didn't think you would listen to her! I don't think you're her copy, I don't think you're a replacement, I don't think you're anything like Kikyo! You are Kagome, not that bitch! And I was going to mark you!”
“Sure you were. Why haven't you already? Kikyo said that you had plenty of time to!”
“She doesn't know anything other than demons use marks to show which mates are whose. She didn't know anything about it!”
Kagome wrenched her arms free. “I'm not going to listen to anymore of your lies, Inuyasha. I gave you my heart, and you broke my trust.” Stepping away, her face became a battle between tears and anger.
“Kagome...” he said, raising his foot.
“Sit!! Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit!” she yelled, running. “I hate you!” Finally, when she was near the camp, the tears won over the anger, and she cried.
The word, Nadea, is one that I made up. So don't try finding the meaning anywhere, cause you'll just be wasting time. Pronounced `Nae dee uh'.
