Millions of stars were imprinted upon the heavens, there were hundred year old trees that were towering and seemed as if they could so easily stroke the sky, verdant grass went on endlessly until it could be seen no more on the horizon, and what lies in this tranquil night is seen to many as absurd, bizarre, even comical.
A demon with a human child and an imp! What ridicule is going on?
How they mocked at the threesome! It was strange enough that such a powerful demon, the first son to the Lord of the West, would journey with a human and an imp, but to also be lame? That was utter humiliation.
They all would point, gossip, and even try to “save” the child of corruption from the tainted demon. The imp would try to be persuaded from its kind to come with them, but it would decline. It would say, “My life is bonded to Lord Sesshomaru.” And before more could turn around and try their luck with either the child or the imp, the group always ended up walking away and disappearing from existence.
And now on this silent night, the demon watched the imp and the young girl sleep soundlessly. He wanted to let out a fierce growl of frustration, how did he end up like this?! Stuck with a human and an imp to forever walk with on the Earth! How? He needed to be with his own kind and not be trapped with such vermin.
When he first had Jaken by his side, he didn't seem to mind. A slave would help him relieve of stress; he would just step on him, throw rocks at him, or slash him with his sword. And besides, it amused him that Jaken could have that much amount of stupidity and be left dumbfounded. No matter how much Sesshomaru abused him, Jaken would always come running back.
But then at times, Jaken annoyed the hell out of him. Every time he wanted to be alone to think, he would have to be out of a 15 mile radius of Jaken. That toad unintentionally provokes him and would squawk out him name almost like a mantra. Besides, Jaken's ugly.
Rin… he didn't know what happened to him. Whether it was the way she tried to help him by offering food despite the fact that she was beaten because of it, that she didn't tell the other humans that she found a wounded demon, the way she laughed the first time when he asked her of her wounds, or just the fact that he wanted to test out Tenseiga, but she was with him. He couldn't rid of her, so he let her travel with him regardless of Jaken's resentment of a human accompanying them.
He didn't know what he saw in her, but as long as she kept up with them, then it wasn't a problem. But why did he keep her around?
“Do you have someone to protect?”
Was he falling for a human and face the same outcome as his father?
Sesshomaru was stuck with this quandary. He probably will never have an answer to why he kept Rin around.
If he only had the Tetsusaiga, this wouldn't be happening to him. His father, instead, handed over the Tenseiga to him, but why?! Why did InuYasha, a hanyou, be able to wield Tetsusaiga?! The Tenseiga proved itself useless in battle and who would Sesshomaru want to revive? Yes, it was true, he had Tokijin, but it was a weak sword from the fang of a weak demon. But, Tenseiga did demonstrate that it was handy, if anything. Despite of his callous heart, Tenseiga had saved him from injuries that were fatal to many.
But still…
Sesshomaru told his father to hand him over the sword, but instead, InuTaisho got himself killed for a woman and hid the sword within the black pearl of InuYasha's right eye. He will never forget the last words that InuTaisho said to him: “Do you have someone to protect?” Someone to protect?! That will never happen. He only has to care for himself and not let others get in his way…
Rin cried out in her slumber and Sesshomaru's attention was suddenly upon her tiny body.
What happened?
She went back hugging onto the blanket and Jaken wasn't disturbed by it and wheezed out in his sleep.
…Probably just a nightmare.
Sesshomaru rested back against the tree trunk and felt a slight breeze touch his ivory skin as he went back to his thoughts.
He was about to unite himself with the sword that was supposed to be rightfully his, but it denied him. The pain of the burn from the sword's hilt was still vivid in his memories. Not even InuYasha was able to draw the sword; it was almost amusing seeing his little brother try to scorn him. But that girl… what was her name? Kagome… she was able to draw the sword, on accident! If that damn thing didn't protect her, she would have been dead by his poison.
InuYasha finally learned how to get Tetsusaiga into its true form by saying he would protect that human; what a sad way to transform it. He had someone to protect. The dreaded words rang in Sesshomaru's mind.
“Do you have someone to protect?”
What displeased him more was the fact that he let his guard down with InuYasha. Right in the middle of fighting, he attempted to deliver the single blow that would kill the both of them, leaving him victorious with Tetsusaiga. But it didn't end that way. Because of his arrogance, he didn't expect InuYasha to attack. The sword was thrust into his left arm and was heaved up to his shoulder, where InuYasha sliced through.
Sesshomaru grabbed what was to spare of his left arm. The sleeve of his kimono covered the severed appendage from view, but the absence of it was easily noted. It was such an embarrassment to have to admit his handicap. Sesshomaru did not only want to take Tetsusaiga away from InuYasha, but he also sought after revenge. Because of this injury his pride was disparaged by demons of all breeds. What type of Demon Lord was he to have his body sabotaged by a hanyou, his brother nonetheless?! He tried his best to not look disturbed when Jaken constantly pointed out that he “couldn't believe” that InuYasha could do such a thing. If he couldn't handle it, then he would simply hurt him. But it would never satisfy him; it took several nights for him to accept his ill fate.
That was when Naraku showed up.
He offered an arm replacement to aid his battle with InuYasha. Sesshomaru wasn't interested into helping the foul hanyou, but he was persuaded with the fact of fighting InuYasha for the sword; even though it was a human's arm. In the end, it proved useless and Sesshomaru had to retreat once again. The Shikon no Tama burned his flesh and he threw the arm back to the poison insects that retrieved it. Sesshomaru was raged with fury that Naraku tried to use him like some puppet of his.
After that, not only was his goal to own Tetsusaiga, but to execute Naraku as well.
There was another time that Sesshomaru was practically in front of both of his father's swords. It was hard to admit, but he did need InuYasha's help to destroy Takemaru. That creature had taken his detached left arm and used it to wield the sword of hell, Sou'unga, his father's sword. The battle against Sou'unga with InuYasha was almost a distorted image that he hoped would stay that way. But what was unforgettable was when he pushed InuYasha out of harm's way. Sou'unga released its Dragon Twister and he saved his brother and put himself in the way of the attack.
“Do you have someone to protect?”
Sesshomaru was in shock. Why did he do such a thing? Has he become soft? He hated InuYasha for what he is and forever will. And because of him teaming up with InuYasha, he had lost Sou'unga.
It disturbed him, why did InuTaisho rid of Sou'unga when he could have passed it on to him. InuYasha already had Tetsusaiga and when he saw his otouto wield the Sou'unga; then it was personal. He easily hid his expression of sorrow and replaced it with anger.
I should have hacked his arm off.
Sesshomaru shifted to get in a comfortable position under the tree and looked up at the leaves. They waved at him as another breeze passed by. He squinted and remembered how forceful the wind was when he last saw his father.
It was on the beach, the waves were crashing upon the sand and sending grains up through the air, the salty scent was carried along with harsh wind, and he was standing there, still very young, in front of his father… before he died.
Sesshomaru placed his hand over his eyes and he shut them tightly.
Why?
He didn't want his father to leave him just yet.
I still had questions.
He wanted to know, he needed to know.
Why did you throw your life away?
Was he stronger than his father?
You were foolish.
He wanted to defeat his father, to know…
I am stronger.
Sesshomaru hung his head low and thought of everything he could have had.
No, what I will have.
Naraku will die by his hands, he will vanquish of his brother's dignity, and be the most powerful demon ever known.
The sun began to rise as the sky held the color of magenta. Sesshomaru was slightly taken by surprise by Rin's yawn.
“Good morning Sesshomaru-sama!” Rin smiled happily as she wiped her eyes of sleep. Jaken groggily woke up and seemed annoyed knowing that Rin was so cheery.
“Did you sleep well Rin?” Sesshomaru asked and Rin nodded her head. “Good, then shall we get going?”
“Hai!” She said and quickly packed up.
Sesshomaru stood up and looked up at the sky, the clouds moved by slowly and he closed his eyes.
“Do you have someone to protect?”
Iie.
