Chapter Six - Betrayal
“Well, I guess we should get going while we still have the whole day ahead of us.” InuYasha said quietly, wrapping the baby up tightly and lifting him from the hollow in the ground that had served as his bed.
“But you were up with him most of the night, you need your rest.” Rin protested, but InuYasha shook his head.
“We've been here too long already.” He glanced at Sesshomaru, but the demon said nothing. “Thank you.” InuYasha muttered sadly and set off into the forest.
“You're just going to let him go?” Rin asked, trying to mask her apparent anger that all of this had been for nothing but still Sesshomaru had nothing to say. Rin sighed. “I suppose it's for the best then.”
Sesshomaru turned his eyes suspiciously on Rin. “How did you know what to do?”
“Someone showed me how.” Rin replied nervously as Sesshomaru advanced on her.
“Who?” He asked darkly and Rin flinched. “You went to her didn't you?”
“Please Lord Sesshomaru, I never intended in any way to leave you for her.”
“Enough. I don't want to hear it.”
“I'm not like Jaken my Lord, I only ever lived to serve you.”
“Do not speak the name of that vile wretch in my presence. Filthy betrayers, you belong together.” Sesshomaru said heatedly and Rin stepped back, fearing his rage.
“She does not compare to you!” Rin shouted desperately and Sesshomaru caught her throat in a single hand, staring into her eyes.
“You do not have the right to compare us, neither do you have the right to speak of her or I. Go to her if she will have you but I will not.” Sesshomaru hissed, releasing her neck and walking off into the forest.
“My Lord!” Rin called one last time, but soon realised that there would be no forgiveness for this and she too walked into the forest; in the opposite direction.
Sesshomaru stopped. Where would he go? He felt that there was no longer any purpose for him. He couldn't remember any of things he had first set out to achieve; only finding Jaken, and Rin, and InuYasha…
InuYasha. After just a few days he had become his soul purpose. To protect him, and the baby. No sooner had the thought crossed his mind his ears picked up of the feint sound of crying. He raised his head and smelt the air. InuYasha's scent drifted on the breeze and he followed it.
He paused at the edge of the trees and just watched down on the scene. He instantly picked up on the smell of InuYasha's tears. InuYasha was sitting on the floor with the baby in his arms, rocking him back and forth. “It's okay.” He whispered. “We will be fine without him. We always were before.” But the baby's cries seemed to protest against these words. “I know you wish he was here.”
Sesshomaru stepped into the clearing, pure instinct pulling him to his distressed family. He knelt beside InuYasha who had frozen completely and lifted the child from his arms. He cradled the tiny creature and almost instantly his tears stopped. “Does he have a name yet?”
“No.” InuYasha said softly still staring at his brother.
“I have a suggestion.”
“What is it?”
“You told me that you thought about naming him after father, but I thought; why not name him after something that father left behind.” He paused for a moment. “I considered InuKiba… after all, he left behind probably the three most powerful swords ever made, but then I thought, he left behind something better even than that.”
“What else did he leave behind that you would consider better than those blades?” InuYasha asked curiously.
“Us.” Sesshomaru finished softly, a brief smile gracing his lips as he noticed his nephew had a firm grip on his hair that wasn't likely to be easily separated. “InuYasha and Sesshomaru. That was why I liked InuMaru.” He looked up at InuYasha. “But it's just a suggestion.”
“When did you think of all this?”
“It's a name I have always liked. But it seems unlikely I will have a child of my own.”
InuYasha was speechless. Sesshomaru was talking to him as if nothing bad had ever happened in their past, as if they had been as close as brothers should be since the day he was born. There was not note of coldness or sarcasm in his voice.
“I never thought that this was were I would end up.”
InuYasha smirked. “What; with your irritating brother and his screaming brat?”
“He never cries when I'm here. Maybe he knows something that we don't.”
“Maybe he knows that I couldn't have got here without you.” InuYasha said softly and Sesshomaru watched his eyes carefully. “Maybe he knows that, all we really need at all in this world to go on; is to be with you. He knows that I didn't want to leave at all, and that all I want now is… is for you to stay.”
“Let me tell you something InuYasha. When I first found you, the only thing that brought me to your side was something that father had asked of me in a dream. He told me to take care of you, something that I always had too much pride to do. But for whatever reason, those words burned strongest in my mind when I saw you laying there. When Rin said that the baby wasn't coming, I wanted to walk away, I had helped you, just as I had been told to, but I couldn't just leave you there. I needed to help you.”
“You didn't have to.” InuYasha said softly.
“I did have to. I had to admit to myself for the first time in my life that I had been wrong. I had told father that I had nothing to protect. But as time went on, I found that I had plenty to protect. I protected Jaken, and Rin. But there was only ever one thing that I wanted to protect: you. I watched over you and then that night when I came back and you said what you did… I didn't know what to say. Did I abandon all pride and tell you what was really on my mind? Or did I simply disregard it and go on as if nothing was said?”
Sesshomaru frowned. “I made the wrong choice. I should have told you everything then that I'm telling you now. That it started as a simple matter of pride, and ended as this.”
“And what is this?” InuYasha asked softly, leaning over and pulling the blankets a little closer around the now sleeping baby.
“Love.”
InuYasha looked up at Sesshomaru. He had never seen such warm sincerity on anyone's face. “Well before you pass such a judgement, there are things about me that you need to know.”
“Go on…”
“I told you, what happened in the village, but that incident was not the end of it. I was so angry… You know as well as I do that I have no control over my demon side, or what I do when it takes me. I… I killed so many people. I couldn't stop myself. Kagome left… she swore she would never come back. I don't blame her, but, it hurt so much. I could have lived side by side with Miroku, but I could not live there without her. As long as she was there I knew that at least one person still loved me.”
Sesshomaru put his arm around InuYasha. “None of that matters to me. In some ways, it's a good thing. If you hadn't done all of those things, you would not have been in the clearing that day and I would not have seen you there. We would not have spoken and travelled together. I would not have been there when you little one was born, and we would not be here now.”
“He's not just my little one.” InuYasha said with a smile. “Like I said before, he must really like you. He's our little one in my eyes.” He paused and stared at the baby. “InuMaru… a little bit of InuYasha and a little bit of Sesshomaru. It suits him perfectly.”
“Where is Rin?” InuYasha added.
“She has left us now.”
“Why?”
“She has found somewhere more suited to her. She will be safe, don't worry for her. I'm sure our paths will cross again.”
Eyes watched from the line of trees, Rin standing nearby. A smile spread over perfect rosé lips. “We will all meet again Sesshomaru. It would be simply delightful to meet you at last, InuYasha.”
