Prologue
The final battle happened to take place where it all started. It was a wonder that the well wasn't destroyed. Almost every thing else between there and Goshinboku had been. There was nothing left of Naraku. The evidence was everywhere and yet not anywhere. Miroku's wind tunnel had closed up and Sango and he stared at it in awe. Slowly, he removed the beads and put them around his neck.
Inuyasha watched, mournfully as Kikyo began to descend towards hell. He had decided not to go with her after all. Kikyo had told him that it would make no sense for him to join her anymore, since there was no longer any love between them. She simply wanted him dead and he just felt guilty about leaving her again.
Kagome was bandaging the wounds on Koga's legs which had been caused when Naraku had ripped the jewel shards out. She had a few wounds herself. None of them were too bad, since she hadn't been battling Naraku himself.
Sesshomaru and his companions had left precisely after Naraku's defeat, as was expected. Sesshomaru had not wanted to waste anymore time over the “useless hanyou” and had only helped defeat Naraku because of “personal issues”, none of which he mentioned.
After Kikyo was gone, Kagome walked over to Inuyasha, wincing as she saw how baldly injured he was. `Maybe I should have done him first.'
“Here. You can use the jewel to turn into a full demon or whatever.” She didn't look at him. She was afraid that she would burst out into tears if she did. `I knew he loved Kikyo all this time. Oh well. At least I won't feel guilty about going home now.' “Hurry up, Inuyasha. I don't have all day.” She spoke in an emotionless voice. That was how she was feeling. Emotionless. Empty. She was leaving. He wouldn't care when she left. `I was just a shard detector after all. Why would he?'
“I have to do some thinking. I'll be back later.” He said, his voice lacking his usual roughness.
“Inu-”
“I said I'll be back.” And with that, he was gone.
Kagome sighed heavily and walked over to her back pack. The group was too tired from the battle to even make it back to Kaede's hut, so they had decided to get some rest then go back in the morning. She rolled out her sleeping bag under one of the few trees that were left. She thought about how she was going to tell the group that she was leaving, and how they would react to the news. She didn't know whether she should stay for a while or leave before she could change her mind. `I'll sleep on it.' She thought crawling into her sleeping bag and closing her eyes.
Inuyasha had returned to camp an hour later and found everyone asleep. Sango and Miroku's sleeping bags were a little closer than usual. They were practically touching. Kagome was sleeping under a tree with Kirara to the right of her. Shippo was cuddled up next to Kirara instead of by Kagome. Inuyasha gave a small smile. It had been part of his `man training' now that he was older. He wouldn't sleep next to Kagome anymore. `That's my boy.' Inuyasha thought, though he would never say it out loud.

Morning soon came and Inuyasha was still awake. He was still thinking about what to wish for. `Should I use it to become a full blooded demon?' He jumped down from the tree he was in and settled at the base of the tree, next to Kagome's head. He stared at her. Her face was relaxed and her lips were slightly parted, emitting tiny sounds whenever she exhaled. `Or?' He closed his eyes. `I want to...I wish that I could be with Kagome forever...No matter what.' Hr glanced at the jewel in his palm, the same color as before. `Maybe it only works for Kagome.' He thought when the jewel didn't do anything. However, if he looked closer, he would have seen a faint glow coming from the jewel, indicating that his wish had been granted.
Kagome awoke to the sound of the busy camp and looked around, hiding her smile when she saw Inuyasha trying to pretend that he hadn't been staring at her. She saw the jewel in his hand and snatched it from him. “If you didn't want to make a wish you should have just said so instead of wasting my time!” `I didn't mean to yell at him, but we could be in so much danger right now. Who knows how many demons are coming after the jewel now that Naraku's gone. And everyone's already injured. There's no way we would be able to handle them all.'
“I did make a wish, w- K- feh.” He crossed his arms.
“What? Then how-” She looked at him. “You don't look any different.”
“I didn't wish to become a full demon.” He said quietly. `It's not like the stupid thing works for me anyway.' He finished in his head.
“What?” She didn't hear him.
“I said I didn't wish to become a full demon.” He said louder.
“What did you wish for then?” She asked him.
“I can't tell you.”
“Why not?” She started getting annoyed. `I let him wish on the jewel and he won't even tell me what he wished for?'
“I just can't okay!?”
“Well if you made a wish, why is the jewel still here?” Then it came to her. `The wish wasn't pure. I have to-' She remembered part of her dream.
…“So you're Midoriko?” Kagome asked, even though she already knew the answer.
“Yes, I am. Do you know why I appeared to you now of all times?”
She thought for a bit. “Does it have something to do with us defeating Naraku?”
Midoriko nodded. “Yes. It has everything to do with that. You're a very bright girl, Kagome.”
“Uh, thanks. If you don't mind me asking-” She paused for clarification.
“Go ahead. I don't mind.”
“Well. Why didn't you just tell all of us while we were awake?”
“Kagome.” Midoriko smiled. “You may not know this, but I'm dead.”
Kagome resisted the urge to roll her eyes. “Well I know that.”
Midoriko suddenly turned serious. “Kagome, I don't have much time. You are about to wake up.”
“Oh.” Kagome frowned. She wished that they could talk for longer.
“I have to tell you about your wish.”
“My wish?”
“Yes. The jewel will grant almost any wish, but in order to be rid of the jewel forever, the wish has to be pure. A wish of that size has many consequences. You may never be able to come back to the Fuedal Era, or worse.” She explained what her wish could cost her, depending on how she worded it.
Kagome looked at her in disbelief. “You mean I-I could die?”
Midoriko looked uncomfortable. “In a way.” She started to disappear. “Kagome it's up to you…
`Pure wish. Might die. Got it. ' Kagome walked over to Sango, Miroku, and the still sleeping Shippo. “You guys. I have to make a wish that will purify the jewel. I might not be able to come back.” She didn't want to tell them anything else, so she moved on and grabbed a photo album from her bag, handing to Sango. “It has pictures from our journey in there. So you won't forget me. Tell Shippo I love him.”
“Oh Kagome, we could never forget you.” Sango said while giving her a tight, one-armed hug.
“She's right, Lady Kagome. There's just something about you that makes you so unforgettable.” Miroku said while hugging the both of them. Of course, his hand just had to “slip”.
SMACK! “Pervert.”
Once Kagome was sure that Miroku was properly “taken care of” she walked over to Inuyasha, who looked so upset that she almost considered staying.
“Kagome, don't go. Just stay here with us. We can handle some stupid weakling demons if they come. We defeated Naraku, didn't we?”
“We can't take that chance. I-I have go to but...I want to tell you something before I do.”
“Just stay.”
“I can't, Inuyasha.”
“So you're just going to leave Shippo here alone?”
“Don't give me that. You're making this harder than it already is.” She started to cry. `Why can't he understand? It's not like I want to leave.'
“Feh. Fine. I don't want you here, anyway. Go home, you stupid wench.” He crossed his arms and looked away.
Kagome tried to pretend that her heart didn't just shatter and decided to just get it over with. “I love you, Inuyasha.” she whispered. Then she kissed him quickly and removed his necklace, before he could react. Dropping the necklace next to him, she stepped back. “I'm gonna miss you guys.” She said as she wiped a tear away. Then she held the jewel firmly and made her wish. A bright light started to shine.
“Kagome.” Inuyasha whispered when he recovered from the shock of her words…and her kiss. He reached out to her and saw her become enveloped in the light and then disappear along with the jewel. “Kagomeee!”
