Inuyasha woke up to a foul smell. Kagome was still asleep next to him. He got up and began to look around.

-- Five Minutes Earlier --

"This will teach that son of a bitch to point a gun at me." A man growled. Another figure next to him nodded. "You get him sugar. Teach them what it means to throw me to the ground."

A Molotov cocktail is tossed into the bushes right near Kagome's house. "Now to set the rest of the traps. What do you say… some explosives in four corners?"

"I like the way you think."

-- Current Time --

Inuyasha noticed the smell was getting stronger and it was getting hotter in the house. He went into the living room to find it ablaze.

"Shit!" He yelled. Getting the fire extinguisher. He got most of them out when a loud noise made his ears ring.

The kitchen was now even more ablaze. Another loud noise and the bathroom was up in smoke. One more and now the bedroom was on fire.

"Kagome!" Inuyasha coughed. Finding the alarm system he hit the ambulance/fire/police buttons all at once. He stumbled as smoke began to get into his eyes and mouth. Burning his throat.

Why isn't she responding? "Kagome! Ahg!"

He broke down the door to the bed room to find it completely ablaze. In the middle of it all was a bed nearly on fire and Kagome passed out from the smoke on it. "Kagome! Wake up! We need to get out!"

She wasn't moving. All Inuyasha could see was the short breaths she was taking.

"Damn it!" He had to jump through flames. Getting slightly burned in the process. He ignored the pain.

He picked up Kagome and looked around. I have to cover her with something. The flames will get her when I go through.

He grabbed the sheets off the bed and wrapped them around her. Picking her up in his arms he jumped through the flames yet again. Stumbling through the halls of the house. He could hear sirens coming in the distance. He tried to open the front door. Supporting her weight in his left arm, realizing she wasn't breathing anymore.

No luck. It must be blocked. Only one thing to do.

He put Kagome over his shoulder. Balancing the weight enough to lift up a leg and kick the door down. He ran out and put Kagome on the ground as the first of the fire engines pulled up. The speakers on the engines rang out urgent messages in his ears.

'Move it! Six alarm fire east hills, go!'

Inuyasha did the only thing he knew how to do.

All those things she taught me come in handy after all… how did this one go again…

"Right!" Inuyasha coughed out. Pinching her nose shut. Checking her mouth to make sure she didn't swallow he toung.

Now breath in. And push three times.

He breathed into her. Quiet tears in his eyes when her chest fell. He pushed three times on her heart.

Damn it. Nothing!

Now cop cars were pulling up. A harsh spot light landed on Inuyasha. He shielded his eyes for a moment before continuing.

"I need help! She's not breathing!"

Come on Kagome. 1, 2, 3!

Nothing. A cop rushed over with a large white device he pulled from the fire engine.

"Sir I need you to step back."

Inuyasha didn't listen. He kept doing CPR.

Come on. Not like this. Any other way but this.

Of all the things I believed in

Three more cops came over and held Inuyasha back, careful of his burns. The man with the large machine put to paddles on Kagome's chest.

"Charging." An ambulance pulled up. "3… 2… 1… Clear!"

Kagome's body jumped off the ground.

She's not coming back… she left me behind.

"Kagome."

"3… 2… 1… Clear!"

"Kagome you left me here. You promised."

"Clear!"

"Hay, get that gurney over here! We've got a pulse!"

Another car pulled up. Sango and Miroku got out and were held back by police.

"She's got a pulse. Hay, let me go!"

Sango broke away from the barrier. She grabbed onto Inuyasha's shoulder.

"Stop that, it won't help her!"

Inuyasha dropped the man back to the ground. His head bowing down again as for the first time he felt pain in his legs and arms.

Inuyasha felt his vision go blurry. The voices sounded strange.

"Inu… ca… he… e?" Sango asked.

"Wha… what?"

"A… ou…. K…?"

"Sango speak up." The voice only got worse.

"Inu… w… wr… it… yo…"

"Sango I…" Inuyasha stopped speaking.

"Inuyasha?!" Sango yelled as he dropped to the ground.

Inuyasha woke up feeling warm and weird. He felt… different inside. Like there was medicine in him taking away pain. He knew if it was true he would heal in a day or so. But his eyes shot wide open. "Kagome!"

He herd a soft giggle next to him. "You're always so worried about me." He turned his head. "Kagome… are you ok? You stopped breathing!"

She put her hand on his forehead. Inuyasha wasn't feeling much better in the panic department.

"I thought I lost you! You died!"

Kagome knew he was tense. She did the first thing that came to mind. The ears.

"Calm down you. You're the one we all should be worried about. You passed out after you got me out. You saved my life."

"Kagome I… that feels nice." He said. Giving up on fighting with her.

"It was only the smoke that got to me Inuyasha. I'm fine. I didn't get burned like you did."

"I'll heal."

Kagome sighed. You're so hard on yourself.

"And thanks to you I will heal just as fast."

She is right. After the mating she has the ability to heal like a demon.

"I still don't feel any better about it. I'm supposed to protect you."

"And you did. Inuyasha stop it. It's not your fault."

Inuyasha sighed. "Ok. But I have to make it up to you."

"Inuyasha no you do…"

"Kagome!" He growled. She sighed. "Ok. Ok. But let's worry about that later."

A Day Later

"Wow. This place is amazing." Kagome said. Looking around Inuyasha's house. "After being together for two weeks I can't believe I haven't seen this place yet."

"Wait until you see this." Inuyasha said. Leading her into another room. In it was the Tetsusaiga incased in a glass case. Kind of like the ones in museums. Next to it was his old red Kimono. Also in glass. A little ways away from it was a picture on a stand.

It was of him and Kagome. Kagome saw it and gingery picked it up. Inuyasha came up behind her. "I held on to that for years, not knowing who it was. Now that I do, I hold that in high praise."

Kagome looked over at him. "I'll be right back."

She went out to her car and went through the arm rest. Picking out her wallet with a triumphant, Ah-ha! She went back into the house and opened it. Plucking out a picture. "I've got a copy as well." She felt tears coming.

"It just hit me full force… I've missed you so much."

She leaped into his arms.

"God you don't know how I've missed you." She said. "You don't know."
