Chapter Two
Inuyasha leaped from branch to branch, graceful and silent as the predator he truly was. The power behind his movements was astonishing, his speed still made her gasp. Kagome never ceased to feel awe and a rush of pure adrenaline to be allowed to share in this wonder. She would never grow weary of clinging to his broad, powerfully corded shoulders as he launched them into the air. It was one of her favorite things, though she wouldn't say as much to the easily embarrassed half demon.
Though now…who knows what she would tell him?
She bit her lip and blushed when she felt that familiar flutter in her belly, maddeningly aware of the way his hard muscles shifted beneath her thighs. Having him so near was beyond distracting…it was always this way when he carried her on his back. Stop it! Stop thinking about him like that! Ugggghhhhh….easier said than done. Inuyasha was so beautiful, the embodiment of the perfect male specimen in her eyes…and he seemed to be opening up to her more, if his actions lately and especially last night were any indication… Ugh , Kagome! Get a grip! He sees you as a friend, nothing more. This is Inuyasha you are thinking about. You remember, the half demon who loves Kikyo and is dead set on loving her for the rest of time despite the fact that she is currently an undead abomination chained to this mortal coil by dark sorcery and should by all that is natural and holy be returned to the graveyard soil from whence she came? Stop this train of thought. Right. Now. She wasn't bitter or anything childish like that. No, not at all.
She frowned. Thinking of Kikyo was usually a bummer. She had to will herself to not have angry feelings toward the undead priestess; after all, Kikyo had endured much tragedy only to be resurrected through no machinations of her own, thrust into a non-life, her soul not truly free, but held in limbo because she was forced to share that soul with her reincarnation who was very much alive and constantly in the company of the one person she still had any attachment to. Kagome felt sorry for her, she didn't REALLY hold ill will toward her. Kagome was naturally a light hearted and optimistic person, but she hated to see how Inuyasha flogged himself repeatedly over Kikyo's death fifty years ago. He wouldn't allow himself to move on, to find happiness, because he felt he didn't deserve to if Kikyo had been denied such things in life. It hadn't been his doing, or his fault, yet Kikyo never said anything to him to reassure him otherwise. In fact, she still held him to his oath to follow her into Hell so that the bitterness she'd felt toward him upon her death would be assuaged. She drifted along in the stasis of her bitterness, unable to move on from the final moments of her previous life, still clinging to the sense of misplaced betrayal. And Kagome was firmly convinced that what was left of Kikyo fairly seethed with hatred toward Inuyasha, despite what the undead miko would have him believe. She sighed. Nothing good would come from brooding on it. Even though she itched to talk to Inuyasha about Kikyo and her perspective on the matter, she didn't dare bring it up. It was a very delicate subject for him.
They had spoken very little since leaving their companions in the exterminator's village. Kagome had been especially preoccupied over her dreams, though she couldn't really remember anything specific about them. Only that she felt drained and weary. She'd felt a bit out of it, in all honesty, and did not even react in surprise when Inuyasha had suggested he take her to the well and had given a distracted nod of assent at his generous offer. Kagome had absently kissed the fox child on top of his head, promising treats upon her return, and not to worry, Inuyasha would protect her. She'd smiled fondly down at him when the youngster puffed out his chest manfully and declared that he would make sure Sango, Miroku, and Kirara were safe until hers and Inuyasha's return. She'd bitten her lip at how adorable that was and cast the monk and slayer glances, grateful that they were sensitive enough to allow the kit his self imposed task. Inuyasha had ruffled his red hair and had informed Shippo with all seriousness that he was counting on him to keep a sharp eye out and protect the humans. That gesture alone had made the kit's eyes glow with hero worship. Their little talk had clearly gone well when the kit had apologized to Inuyasha, pulling him aside so they could speak privately. Kagome could not remember a time in the years she'd known the hanyou, that she'd been more proud of him.
As soon as Inuyasha had secured her to his back, she pressed herself instinctively against his warm body, relaxing in the security of his presence. Only once they were well on their way, moving at an inhuman pace through the woods, did it occur to Kagome that Inuyasha had actually OFFERED to take her home, before she'd even gotten a chance to ask. I usually have to beg…and then endure a lecture about holding up the search for jewel shards and how sick he is of me going to school.
Her hold on Inuyasha tightened as she buried her face in his hair, letting his wild masculine scent surround her. He ran like the wind over the countryside, his grip on her thighs tightening minutely, a wordless communication that he was there, available for her. The gesture calmed her more than he could ever know. It made her heart lurch because it was these type of things he'd been doing lately that were making it so hard for her to remember that his heart would never belong to her. It was also those same little things that made it impossible to resist her recent flirtatious behavior toward him. She stifled a groan of embarrassment, remembering one particular thing she'd said to him last night. Silly dog-boy? Seriously? And the way I said it, too…kami, I must have sounded so stupid…She felt her neck flush with heat when her mind flashed an image of the hungry snarl he'd given her. She swallowed hard, knowing instinctively that some part of him had been…entertained…by their little back and forth. He was a male, after all, and she had been behaving a bit…slutty. She closed her eyes, wishing she could blot out the event entirely, and hoping he didn't think less of her.
She knew he was aware of how she felt about him. She'd told him as much once upon a time, and had even pledged to remain by his side regardless of the fact that he could not return her feelings. It had hurt, but she did not begrudge him his obligation and feelings for his lost love. She'd been able to go on with her quest with him and their friends, despite her love for him, and had even begun to come to terms with him in her life as only a friend. She was happy, she had friends that she adored and considered family, and they were making progress on their quest. She'd learned to deal with Inuyasha's mercurial moods and foul mouth, letting the majority of it roll off her back. The more she got to know him, the less his crude behavior bothered her because she saw that deep down he was a good guy with the same insecurities as everyone else. He'd never admit that of course, but Kagome knew better. She'd become quite skilled in interpreting the movements of his ears and how accurately they gave away his true thoughts on a matter, and much of the time, those furry appendages totally belied any thoughtless behavior designed to make him appear as if he didn't give a shit.
Lately though, he'd been on her mind constantly. It was as if all of a sudden she didn't care that she wasn't supposed to think about him like that. Her every thought and imagining had centered around Inuyasha…but not merely the romantic day dreaming like usual. It was not only the wistful yearning of a schoolgirl crush pining for her first love. No, it went far deeper than that…she ached for him on a primal level. It was as if she were feeling a pain that belonged to him…and yet, it was hers as well. She yearned to sooth him…but how? She wanted to ease his burdens but was frustrated with the vague nature of her need. How in the world would she go about such things?
The idea of coming right out and TELLING him that she ached for him and wanted to ease his burdens was totally out of the question without something specific to go on. Hell, it even sounded stupid to her! She could only imagine what he would say. She blushed crimson at the very thought. She closed her eyes briefly and let out one more shuddering, mournful sigh, letting her head fall with a thump on his shoulder. She focused instead on the wind on her face, willing it to quiet her mind.
Inuyasha grit his teeth when he felt her heave yet another sigh. Something was bothering Kagome and experience told him that she would not readily divulge what it was. He also knew from experience that simply asking her what the hell her problem was in his usual manner would yield little in the way of information. Indeed, she would likely only withdraw into herself further, and if he were especially unlucky, make sure he got a face full of dirt.
She'd been quiet and subdued ever since they'd all woken up this morning and he knew for a fact that she was only like this when she had something big on her mind. Could it have something to do with Tetsusaiga pulsing last night? One thing seemed crystal clear. Kagome was troubled by something and he wanted to know about it…and then deal with the problem with extreme prejudice. The fact that his sword most likely was related to whatever ailed her only agitated him further.
He spotted a mountain spring that flowed merrily over a jagged rock face not far from the path they traveled. He figured they could stop for a drink. He pointed out to himself with a sardonic grunt that he was in no hurry to get to the well and that the idea of being alone with her held far too much appeal to rush the trip. He leaped up to a nice flat rock where they could rest.
Her current melancholy mood on top of how enticing she'd been behaving toward him as of late was really starting to confuse the hell out of him. He stopped and looked back at Kagome with an arched brow, releasing his hold on her, setting her gently on her feet. He had difficulty letting go of her warm smooth legs, letting his hands slide overlong along her bare thighs as he released her. He did not miss the soft gasp she uttered at his lingering touch. If he were able to, he'd kick his own ass for allowing himself such liberties. What the fuck am I doing? I should NOT be touching her like that! The way her scent shifted as they traveled nearly drove him out of his mind. Normally, carrying her on his back was something he thoroughly enjoyed, despite how much he tried to make her believe how much of a bother it was. Many a night perched within the branches of Goshinboku were spent fantasizing about those gorgeous legs wrapped around him as he ran…and all of the unspeakably debauched things he wanted to do with the delectable female attached to them.
But this morning, with memories of how seductive and flirtatious she'd been last night, Inuyasha was cursing his own idiocy. When he'd offered to take her to the well, he'd forgotten about the mode of travel they would employ. He'd made a grave miscalculation regarding how painfully aware he would be of ever breath she took, every sound she made, the press of her breasts against his back, her scent. 'I am so fucked….gods, her scent is going to be the end of me'...
She was far too tempting, and lately, she had seemed…within reach. He put a few steps between himself and Kagome, shoving his hands into the sleeves of his fire rat, tightly crossing his arms within. Swallowing hard and inwardly cursing himself he growled roughly, immediately wincing at how harsh he sounded. "Spit it out, wench. What's eating at you?"
Kagome was used to Inuyasha's gruff demeanor and didn't take offense. She startled a bit at the sound of his voice, as they had been traveling in silence for a while now. "Huh? Oh…I just have lots of things on my mind…schoolwork, Shippo, jewel shards….you know…the usual." She hedged, biting her lip, hoping he would buy it and leave it alone. She really had no idea how to talk to him about this. Oh, well, you see, Inuyasha…this is soooo funny, I just know you will get a kick out of it….I can't stop thinking about you and really wish I could protect you from something. From what, you ask? Hahaha, funny thing, that. I have no bleeding idea! Isn't that hilarious? She made a face. Yeah, like she could tell him the truth. He'd for sure think she'd lost it if she told him that. Maybe he would be merciful and accept her answer.
No such luck. He glowered at her. "Kagome. You suck at lying."
She winced and looked away, brushing past him to lower her bottles into the clear, ice cold water. She didn't respond immediately. "Um….weeelll….you see it's uh…" she started reluctantly. She knelt at the water, filling the last plastic bottle and tensing when she saw Inuyasha's distorted reflection in the glassy surface behind her. Suddenly, she felt a gentle pulse in her chest, coupled with a soothing warmth. She gasped sharply at the sensation. The world felt like it was spinning and then she was surrounded by a soft and lulling nothingness.
Kagome was vaguely cognizant of Inuyasha rushing down to her side, her limbs felt rubbery and leaden and she tried to lift her hand to his face but found the signal did not fire from her brain. She couldn't move. His voice called out her name in a panic as he caught her. He sounded far away as she gave in to whatever was happening…
There was a tug upon her mind. The pull strengthened, became more insistent, until she was at length aware that she was not within her own body any longer. There was sublime emptiness that felt like an eternity but was probably only a second of actual time. Then came the tug once again. She was not inclined to resist in any way. Kagome became immediately aware that now, she inhabited the body, the mind, the heart and soul…of Inuyasha.
She became a spectator…but more than that. She actually experienced what he experienced, felt what he felt…
Then she began to THINK his thoughts…and she saw HERSELF, her friends, the world…through Inuyasha's eyes. Her consciousness immediately recoiled in guilt when she realized she was privy to the hanyou's inner workings, his private thoughts. Shouldn't I ask his permission first?...I mean…this seems kinda…intrusive. She willed herself to simply watch as she sensed no malice from whatever force brought about this strange occurrence. Hearing her own voice coming from herself, which was currently NOT herself, was…surreal, to say the least.
"Inuyasha! I sense two jewel shards…heading this way, really fast!" Kagome called out, looking at him expectantly. Inuyasha made no effort to hide the dangerous growl that bubbled up from deep within. ' Koga…just what I need, that asshole getting close to Kagome…'
Suddenly, a huge dust storm roared into the clearing where the Inu-tachi currently rested and dissipated right in front of Kagome, revealing none other than Koga. The wolf prince flashed the teenage girl from the future a predatory grin, wasting no time in gathering her small hands within his own larger ones.
"Ah, Kagome, my sweet…I just came by to gaze upon your loveliness and to make sure Dog Shit over there is keeping you safe." He crooned smoothly.
Kagome tittered nervously, clearly uncomfortable with his attentions, though she wasn't trying to pull her hands away. "Ehehe…yeah…no worries there…"
Inuyasha grit his teeth and remembered his promise to her, mentally kicking himself for making such a fucking stupid promise. She'd begged and implored him to not start any fights whenever the wolf came around. He knew how much her tender heart hated violence of any kind…especially if it occurred between those she considered her friends. Inuyasha growled louder at that thought…she really believed Koga was her 'friend'? Some friend! She couldn't smell how aroused that fucking wolf was every time he came near her and just what that meant if her 'friend Koga' ever got her alone. Her innocence was a danger to her. Kagome's failure to put as much distance as possible between herself and that flea bag made something inside him snap. Just as he was about to yank Kagome away from that bastard the wolf looked directly at him and curled his lip in overt mocking. Inuyasha noticed something not quite right about Koga in that moment…it made his hackles rise in warning. Not that Koga was ever 'right' in the half demon's mind…but this was different…sinister. There was a desperation in his eyes that was all too familiar…
The wolf spoke softly in the canine youkai tongue, only for Inuyasha's ears.
"I WILL take her, by force if I have to. There is nothing a half breed mongrel or a couple of weak humans can do to stop me. I leave her with you for now only because it suits my purposes. Once I kill Naraku, she's MINE!"
Inuyasha growled loudly at this taunt, feeling helpless to do anything about it because he knew as soon as he did, he'd get sat. He replied back in the youkai tongue, rage making him tremble, "Stay the fuck away from her!"
Sure enough, Kagome appeared right in front of him, seemingly exasperated with his murderous growling (or what she ASSUMED was only growling) her eyes pleading with him for peace. The genuine concern and gentleness reflected in her beautiful face caused him to momentarily soften his expression. He hated when she was stressed because of him. "Please don't fight, Inuyasha, remember your promise…Koga didn't come here to fight, did you Koga?"
The wolf smiled roguishly at the miko, sidling over to her, tossing Inuyasha mocking glances. "I would never do anything without cause, my dear Kagome. If I fight, I think we all know it's only ever because Inu-trasha starts it."
"Why, you fucking…..I DO NOT!" the hanyou roared indignantly, brandishing Tetsusaiga uselessly.
Sango and Miroku were standing off to the side, but both of them glaring distrustfully at Koga, Sango especially was watching him intently when he began the strange halting growling speech of canine youkai. But Inuyasha didn't have a chance to ponder on that as he was hit with a sickening realization.
"Koga intends to take Kagome, whether she wanted him to or not", he murmured softly to himself…that knowledge slammed into him like a landslide, all this time, Inuyasha had written the pesky wolf off as insignificant, a pest to be swatted away as unimportant. It had never occurred to him that he would actually harm her in any way once he'd sort of gotten to know the annoying wolf and his followers. They had a common adversary in Naraku and the hanyou had to grudgingly admit, at least to himself, that the wolves were not his enemies…until now. Kagome sighed and looked at him with an expression of long suffering weariness.
"Really, Inuyasha….calm down."
Inuyasha growled viciously, gripping Tetsusaiga in a white knuckled hold. CALM DOWN? She had no idea what was happening every time that flea bag showed up, putting his hands all over her…DAMMIT! WHY did she let him TOUCH HER? Didn't she REALIZE she was letting him scent mark her every time he did that?
Inuyasha would KILL the bastard slowly if he ever thought about going through with his intention of taking Kagome by force. He would protect her, no matter what! His youkai snarled as he lifted Tetsusaiga, leaping quick as lightening, neatly inserting himself between the wolf and Kagome, yanking her behind him, and shoving Koga away, hating to see his filthy paws on her.
"Shut up, wench! I'm about to teach this mangy wolf a lesson about touching what doesn't fucking belong to him!"
Koga growled and drew his sword as he regained his feet, continuing to rumble in the canine language. "Do you honestly think I would ever recognize the worthless claim of a half breed? Do you think it matters to me that you have scent marked her already?" And here Koga sneered at him like he was nothing more than an insect. "Do you really think she will let you do a damn thing to stop me from taking what I want?"
Then he said plainly, for the benefit of all the humans present, but addressing Kagome, looking around Inuyasha as if he were not there, "Ah, Kagome…you are such a compassionate female to persevere in your quest in the company of such an uncivilized brute. I know your sense of honor keeps you from abandoning your duty to the Shikon no Tama and that you have promised to not leave his side, but…all you gotta do is say the word, Kagome, and you'll be my mate."
"Like fucking hell she will, you fucking wolf shit motherfucker!" Inuyasha bellowed, incensed, his face red, teeth bared and in essence the perfect picture of a dog demon unhinged.
Kagome replied to Koga, unperturbed by Inuyasha's histrionics, other than appearing annoyed. "Koga, I am not leaving Inuyasha. As much as I appreciate your offer, right now mating ANYONE is totally out of the question."
Stricken to the core by this vague announcement and feeling betrayed that she did not outright REFUSE that fucking asshole, Inuyasha lifted the transformed Tetsusaiga, howling in rage, ready to unleash Kaze no Kizu on this bastard. Inuyasha wanted Kagome safe, and he saw this as the most effective means to that end. His demon side was more in control and all he could think of was protecting his chosen female from a very clear threat. He lifted the transformed Fang above his head, ready to slam it to the ground to unleash his attack, hating the shit eaten grin Koga wore as he stood there, not even preparing for the hanyou's attack. At the last second, Inuyasha knew why.
"Osuwari!"
He slammed face first into the dirt, one second before he was able to release Kaze no Kizu. He was held immobile by the spell for a few minutes and all he could think of was that that bastard would be able to easily take her, with plenty of time to get away before the affects of the rosary wore off. Kirara would not even be able to keep up with Koga's speed. All he could think of was that Koga would have plenty of time to 'stake his claim' on Kagome, whether she was willing or not, before Inuyasha could even do anything about it. His mind and heart cried out in anguish. Why? Why would she not allow him to protect her? He whimpered softly, feeling totally defeated and confused and hating himself for being so weak and ineffective.
He heard the far off sounding voices of the monk and slayer and of Koga answering Kagome.
"Ah, your sense of loyalty and honor humbles me, Kagome. You are worth waiting for. Once Naraku is out of the way, I'll come back for you."
Sango snapped angrily at the wolf, her words momentarily giving Inuyasha a tiny sense of validation that he wasn't completely crazy, "Maybe if you didn't come around, Inuyasha wouldn't have a reason to fly off the handle!"
Koga ignored the slayer and Inuyasha just barely heard the sounds of the monk whispering to her, trying to calm her down as he led her away from the scene. He was oddly gratified and comforted by their presence, despite the fact that they could do nothing.
Kagome's voice sounded embarrassed, placating, and uncomfortable. "Ehhehehe…you really…that's not necessary, Koga…"
Inuyasha just laid there in the dirt, waiting impatiently for the effects of the subduing spell to wear off. He wanted to scream in frustration when he heard Kagome's luke warm answer to the wolf. She may as well have just point blank said YES to the flea bag! The way she talked to Koga like Inuyasha were nothing more than a rash and mindless fool, talking about him like he wasn't even THERE….like he was an ANIMAL unable to reign in his possessive jealousy. 'Dammit that wasn't it! Why can't she see that he's a DANGER to her?'
He realized absently that Shippo wasn't even able to hear Koga's hateful words, he'd been too far away with Kirara…then again, he bet a week's worth of ramen that Koga wouldn't have said them within the hearing of the kit, knowing Shippo would rat him out right then and there to his adoptive mother. Inuyasha snarled in disgust, having a pretty good guess as to what Kagome would say if he were to actually TELL her the wolf's plans for her. Huh-uh…there was NO WAY he was sharing that and risk the humiliation of getting sat again…he'd just have to make sure she stayed safe, in spite of the fucking rosary.
"Anything for my woman, Kagome. Dog Breath doesn't scare me."
The fight went out of Inuyasha as he heard Kagome exhale an irritated sigh followed by a sheepish reply. "Koga…you know how he gets…you better go…"
"It's quite alright Kagome, I don't expect civil behavior from one such as Inuyasha…I'll be along one of these days to claim you as my mate…until then, you be careful." he finished suavely. The hanyou felt something inside of him die when all she did was groan in aggravation at the wolf's thick headedness and say NOTHING to correct him.
He heard the whispered growls of the hated wolf as he laughed at his plight, right before he disappeared in his whirlwind. The fucking coward was leaving before the spell released him. Inuyasha growled threateningly, a sound that promised pain. Koga only chuckled snidely as he made to leave, passing the Inuyasha shaped crater. "You hear all that, mutt? Kagome knows what she wants. She pretty much proved right now she chooses me…whether she knows it or not. She WILL be mine, and I'll claim her right in front of you, Dog Shit."
The vision receded and Kagome was once again weightless, separated from the confines of Inuyasha's mind and memory. She thought she was going to be sick as she came to, firmly within her own body and mind, looking up into the concerned and tender amber gaze of her protector.
He was at her side in a heartbeat as she slumped over, gathering her into his arms gingerly. He whined in the back of his throat helplessly. He nearly jumped out of his skin when Tetsusaiga pulsed at his hip as soon as she fell. What the hell? First last night, now today? Did it happen because she fainted?
"Kagome! Wench….dammit, wake up." He gently patted her cheek. She seemed to have only fainted. Her breathing and heartbeat were steady and strong. Her scent was normal, as if she were only sleeping. She must have been out for only a couple minutes but the whole time her eyelids were fluttering and it looked like her eyes were rolling all around. It started to freak him out and so he gently shook her once more, growling softly. She grimaced, groaning softly. "Inu…yasha?" she mumbled, looking up at him in confusion.
He sagged in relief to see her troubled brown eyes peering up at him."Kagome…are you ok? What the hell happened?" he tried to keep the demanding tone out of his voice but it was difficult. He picked up one of the water bottles she'd dropped when she fainted, unscrewing the cap and offering it to her. She gingerly took a sip and then sagged back into his hold, feeling the backs of her eyes stinging with tears.
"I'll be ok, Inuyasha." She responded in a thin small voice.
He growled, the scent of salt unnerving him. He positively hated it when she cried. "Yeah, I can tell you are just perfectly fucking fine." He retorted sarcastically. He softened when her tears kept falling and he sighed, gently wiping them away from her cheek with his thumb.
"I really am fine, Inuyasha…please…." She implored softly, not sure what she was even asking for.
Was she fine? Was she really? Could she honestly tell him she was ok after seeing something like that? She wanted to cry, beg his forgiveness, beat the shit out of Koga….HOW THE HELL was she supposed to tell Inuyasha that she'd just had a front row seat into his private thoughts? And WHY would she all of a sudden have a vision about one of Inuyasha's memories about the last encounter they'd had with KOGA? Could that BE any more random? She remembered that particular day…it was just any other ordinary day of searching for leads on jewel shards. After the wolf had left, Inuyasha had been his normal, surly self…perhaps a bit more gruff, maybe a bit subdued, but she certainly hadn't thought it out of the ordinary. She sat him just like always whenever Koga came around… She closed her eyes, shame washing over her, the details of the vision shining a spotlight upon every single one of her false assumptions about the hanyou she trusted with her life.
The growled words Koga had said to Inuyasha that she was able to somehow understand in the vision made her skin crawl. She would never in a million years have imagined the charming and gentle Koga capable of saying such things. Even though one part of herself knew that she had no way of knowing or understanding the horrible words Koga had said to Inuyasha at the time it had actually happened, she still felt terribly guilty for not trusting Inuyasha's instincts enough to let him protect her the way she OBVIOUSLY needed protecting. She felt awful for how INUYASHA had felt. The helplessness, the gnawing fear for her well-being…and she had mistaken his actions for simple, old-fashioned territoriality. Another thing that slapped her in the face with its glaring truth was how right Inuyasha had been to assume she would angrily sit him if he had tried to TELL her just what Koga had been saying in the youkai tongue. Her prudish naiveté would have seen to that. She groaned mournfully and tried to sit up, huffing resignedly when Inuyasha's hold on her tightened.
He glowered down at her, bringing her out of her confused and guilt-ridden thoughts. "You gonna sit here and try to tell me YOU FAINTING was about Shippo and your stupid tests?" he demanded.
Kagome bit her lip and looked away. She was a horrible liar. She really DID want to tell him but he was such a private person. He'd always been so defensive if confronted with his emotions. And now with this…vision, or whatever it was, along with the persistent yearning to protect him…she was not so much worried as she was confused. She wanted so much to get closer to him, to KNOW him and NURTURE him and if these things happening would help her to do that, then she would tell him all she could…but right now…all she wanted to do was be near him without words, absorbing the tranquility that was existed only when he held her.
"Inuyasha…I don't know exactly what is going on. I…I'm sorry…." she bit her lip and looked up at him, feeling a powerful wave of affection and intense love for him, even when he was being impossibly grouchy and overly rude. He was so brave, so steadfast and strong. His drive to protect her sometimes got in the way of his better judgment, but his heart was in the right place. He wanted to keep her safe. He CARED for her… Unbidden, and before she could stop herself, she leaned up and nudged the underside of his chin, rubbing his jaw with her nose, making a tiny whining sound in the back of her throat. She wanted to apologize…for Koga…for letting Koga even come near her. She wanted to say a lot of things and didn't know how with words…so she simply let her actions do the talking, not really sure right now where the urge was coming from. She refused to allow her typical girlish and maidenly embarrassment rob her of an opportunity to communicate to Inuyasha just how important he was to her. She didn't register her actions or why she did them, just that they felt right.
Inuyasha froze. What she was doing was distinctly canine in nature and spoke directly to his demon side. It made him want to cover her body with his own and assert his dominance over her, as she was so readily submitting to him now, although he sensed her answer was only a half truth. He rumbled in his throat in acceptance of her apology, though, he had a feeling she was apologizing for what she wasn't telling him. Her scent indicated her desire for him and he shuddered in the effort to control his instincts. He nudged her own chin with his nose rather roughly, wanting access to her neck and letting out a feral guttural growl of approval when she complied without resistance, dropping her head back. He sniffed the hollow of her throat and grazed the delicate skin with his fangs, allowing the tip of his tongue to taste her flesh. It was when Kagome let out a soft moan in response to that action that Inuyasha remembered himself.
He scrambled to his feet with a mournful groan, hauling her with him none too gently to keep her from tumbling gracelessly from his lap. She 'eeped' in surprise. He quickly set her on her feet, snatching his hands away as if she burned him. He ran his claws through his hair in agitation, pinning his ears back, unable to look at her. His face was on fire with self-consciousness. He felt like a complete bastard.
If he looked at her, he couldn't be sure what he'd do…but he was positive whatever it was, it most certainly would NOT be a good idea. His youkai angrily disagreed. 'Hold our mate…she needs reassurance…she needs our scent…'
"Stay here," he muttered to Kagome without looking at her, and leaped into the tree tops, disappearing from view.
Kagome was reeling from the wash of sensations Inuyasha had just been inflicting on her. The rumbling vibrations of his possessive growl made her want to go boneless in his arms. Having him yank her to her feet without warning and then abruptly vanish left her standing there with her mouth hanging open, swaying dizzily.
"Huh?...Inu…yasha?" She looked in the direction he'd disappeared and blinked stupidly.
"Um…"
Kagome was no stranger to Inuyasha's mood shifts, but this was for the record books. Sighing heavily and sinking back to the ground, she drew her legs up close to her body and hugged them tightly, resting her chin on the tops of her knees. She could still feel his teeth and tongue on her skin. Her heart was still hammering in her chest. She closed her eyes and waited for him, willing her body to calm down from the sensory overload.
Inuyasha's youkai was snarling at him to go back to her, he could sense her confusion even from here. He'd not gone far…just in a wide circle around where she sat waiting for him. He would never leave her unprotected, unguarded. But he'd needed some distance between himself and Kagome before he did something really unforgivable.
Something unforgivable like…give in to the desire that burned so brightly between them both.
How had he become so soft in allowing her to breach his defenses like that? She was too good for him…but as always it was up to Inuyasha to maintain the distance between them as Kagome clearly lacked the common sense to know what was best for her…and he was NOT it. He did not deserve her…not by a long shot. He'd already caused enough upheaval in her life as it was. As perfect and tempting as she was, he could not allow her to ruin her life. She deserved a normal, happy, SAFE, worry free life. She deserved everything that was so far removed from what Inuyasha could possibly comprehend…let alone provide.
She deserved far more than a hanyou.
How in the foulest level of hell was he supposed to resist her when she now suddenly knew just how to respond to the subtlest sign given AGAINST HIS WILL by his youkai? How was he supposed to resist her when she effortlessly and without warning spoke to him in the most instinctual language of his heritage, soothing his spirit, stroking his ego, using not human words, but body language to demonstrate just how deep her understanding of him went? YES! He wanted her! That didn't mean he should HAVE her! Unfortunately, his youkai didn't give a fuck what was best, what was RIGHT. It had been easy before to suppress his instincts regarding her because she had been clueless about his true nature. Granted, she accepted him regardless of his half demon status, but he'd been able to easily keep her at arm's length with a gruff, angry, and at times, unpleasant exterior. It had been effective in protecting them both from the attraction that had always simmered between them.
But now… BASTARD! He raged nonsensically at himself, albiet mentally as he snarled audibly, his feral visage terrifying. NOW she suddenly KNEW him far better than he knew himself and it scared the living shit out of him. He was powerless to protect her from himself if she insisted on shattering every single barrier he had.
Inuyasha slashed angrily at the thick gnarled bark of trees as he passed by them, launching himself skyward, into the canopy. He loved Kagome with a wild abandon that far surpassed the hesitant affection he'd held for Kikyo. He longed for Kagome with a savage hunger that he'd never known was possible. He wanted her, gods…how he wanted her.
How could he protect her if she knew the way into the ugliest part of him?
She loves us both. Demon and human.
We need her. She protects us. We protect her.
The half dog demon took a deep breath and finally halted his frantic rampage against the innocent flora. His human heart raged against giving in to the truth spoken by his youkai. Yet he managed to come back to himself.
Inuyasha crouched on a towering branch, so high above the ground that the woman he'd left near the stream was quite small. She looked so far away and so lost and alone. Displaced, annoying, loud mouthed girl from the future. Strange, beautiful, clumsy miko in the short skirt. Woman-child from another world with a kind heart that defied logic and challenged all of his prejudices.
Kagome.
He'd sworn to protect her, in every way possible, with all that was within him. But didn't she also strengthen him? Yes. She…and only she inspired him to be more than anyone or he himself had ever thought a half demon could be.
Before the half demon could react, she turned and looked up at where he was perched. He tensed, poised to flee the hurt that he expected to see on her face that he would behave so abruptly, leaving her by herself. Not too long ago, he may have even expected her to sit him.
She smiled that beautiful smile that always made his knees weak, beckoning him with a small gesture of her hand. He felt the tension leave his body.
She understood.
No words were exchanged between the miko and half demon as Inuyasha ran at a ground eating pace straight for the well. Oddly enough, both of them were comfortable in the company of the other and neither felt compelled to speak. It wasn't long before they passed the familiar rice paddies on the outskirts of Keade's village. Kagome didn't even ask if they were stopping. She knew what was on his mind.
As if reading hers, Inuyasha rumbled as they leapt down the well, the magic of the time slip engulfing them, "Your mother damn well better have gotten me some shrimp flavor ramen. Kami knows I fucking need it right now."
Again, I literally squee with delight to get reviews. It scares my kids. They think I'm weird. So please review so I can freak my kids out. It's not as much fun as trolling them, but I will leave that honor to my husband.

O.O.O.O.O.O.O
A/N – Well, this chapter sorta got away from me. I know not a lot happened in the way of action, but I felt it was good to get some of that introspective angst out there. I hope you all enjoyed it, as I really enjoyed writing it. :D Your reviews and comments mean the world to me. If you love the story or hate it, please let me know. At this point, I have no idea where I am going with it as it was originally intended to be a oneshot. But seeing as how I already have another 10,000 or so words of text already typed out of the next chapter, it looks like it's taken a mind and will of its own! Lol I also realize Koga was a bit OOC in Kagome's vision, but trust me, all will be revealed. I have a definite plan for good ol' Koga, even if I am quite shocked with myself for letting the story take off like this.Again, I literally squee with delight to get reviews. It scares my kids. They think I'm weird. So please review so I can freak my kids out. It's not as much fun as trolling them, but I will leave that honor to my husband.
