1) Death

Soul Dolls.

These creatures that are life sized dolls made to look like us and carry a soul. Because they have a soul, they are alive...and yet they are not. For while they do have a soul, their body isn't flesh and blood like our bodies. So, it is a Soul Doll's purpose to seek out love and once they find love they will become human...but if they don't, they will lose their soul and become a lifeless doll once again.

It takes a lot of time and energy to create a doll, so only skilled people known as the Doll Crafters are able to complete this task. Scattered through out all the universes, they work their magic most generally in secret as they create dolls and give them a soul that is ready for life. While they are the slaves of the Muses when they create a Soul Doll's shell, they often find themselves commissioned by outsiders who seek a companion.

In the Doll Crafter community, there is one woman who is famous for not only the high quality of her Soul Dolls but also their success of finding love and becoming human. Even so, she prefers to keep her identity a secret as she wears a black veil over the lower part of her face and never gives her name out to people anyone but her closest friends. All anyone knows about her is that she's five feet and five inches talk with pale flawless skin, bold green eyes, shoulder length dirty blonde hair and the body of a ballerina with long slender limbs.

Her latest commission though from a priest, from the Feudal Era of Japan. Yet the moment that the commission was completed, she learned that the man was on his deathbed and fading fast. In a panic, she quickly dressed the Soul Doll and placed a brown hooded cloak upon its body as she put a green cloak around her own form before they raced out to the stables and mounted a snow white horse. As the Soul Doll rode sidesaddle, the woman rode stride as she kept her creation safe between her arms and snapped the reigns. The horse then gave a loud neigh and galloped off as fast as it could into the night.

Even though it was dangerous to be at night like this, the woman knew she had to get to the priest's home before he died. So she urged the horse go faster with furious snaps of the reigns, as time seemed to be just out of her grasp. Finally, they came upon the village of the dying priest and the woman felt hope rising inside her body as she led the horse through the village and to the home of the dying priest. Once there, she gave a hard pull of the reigns that the horse protested before he came to a stop. The horse pawed at the ground and shook his mane as the Soul Doll first dismounted the horse and the woman soon followed her as she approached the house.

The Doll Crafter moved forward and pulled back the curtain for the Soul Doll who walked into the house and the woman soon followed her. Inside, they found the dying man in his bed on the floor and his five-year-old daughter Kaede kneeling beside him on the other side of the bed.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Kaede demanded as the two approached and knelt by her father.
"It's all right Kaede, they're our friends," the man said.
"Oh, sorry," Kaede meekly apologized but kept a fierce protective look in her eyes that made both Soul Doll and Doll Crafter frown.

"Did you bring...her?" the priest asked.
"Yes, Kikyo is here," the woman said and turned to the cloaked figure that parted the cloak with a pair of slender pale skinned hands. These hands then pulled back the hood of the cloak to reveal the face of a beautiful young woman. She then discarded the cloak on the floor to reveal that she was dressed in the robes of a Miko. Needless to say, her beauty awed both father and daughter as she looked down at the dying priest with sad brown eyes.

"Father, who are these people?" Kaede asked as she snapped herself out of the trance.
"Kaede," the man said as he turned to his daughter, "This is Kikyo. She is going to become the village's new Miko and your older sister."

"What!? Why?" Kaede exclaimed.
"Because, the poison has been inside me for far too long and time is fading fast for me. Kikyo is here to protect not only the village, but you as well. She will watch over and raise you so as you may become a Miko some day as well," the priest explained to his daughter as tears welled up in the corner of her eyes.

"Kikyo," he said and turned to the Soul Doll, "Would you please do this me? Pick up where I left off and love Kaede as your own sister?"

"Yes, I will," Kikyo said with a soft smile, which the priest mirrored.
"I'm glad to hear that, thank you..." the man said as he slowly closed his eyes and the last of his life force left his body.

"Father?" Kaede asked as she shook her father's body. When she got no response, a great sorrow swept upon the young girl and she found that she could no longer hold back the tears.

"Father," Kaede said sorrowfully as she sniffled lightly and tried to wipe away the tears. But she was soon surprised when Kikyo got up, walked around her father's dead body and collected her in a loving embrace.

"Kikyo?" Kaede asked as she looked up at the beautiful Miko.
"Kaede, it's okay to cry. I'm here for you," Kikyo said soothingly. Kaede was surprised at first when she heard this, but sorrow soon overwhelmed her once again and she grasped Kikyo's white top as she buried her face into the soft fabric and cried her heart out. At the same time, Kikyo continued to hold her as she stroked the child's head and stared down at the floor with sorrowful eyes as a single tear rolled down her own face...

* * *

...a single tear rolled down Kikyo's face as she released her arrow and it flew straight through the air and hit its target, the Hanyou Inuyasha. She smiled as Inuyasha was sealed to a tree and the Sacred Jewel of the Four Souls flew out of his hand. The victory was short lived though as her body spassed in pain, which reminded her that she had been mortally wounded by that Hanyou only moments ago. The very same Hanyou whom she fell in love with and gave her heart to...yet she never told him her greatest secret...that she was a Soul Doll.

Yes, Kikyo knew that she was a Soul Doll. She learned this when the one who created her explained this to Kaede. Since the night of the priest's death, five years had passes with no once else discovering her secret. Then, one day, she crossed paths with the Hanyou Inuyasha and the two fell in love. As she feel deeper in love, Kikyo could feel herself slowly becoming human with each passing day. This made her happy and she walked with a spring in her step and her head held up much higher as joy became a constant in her glassy eyes.

Even so, she didn't know just how close to human she was when she was struck down in the field. She wasn't surprised by the attack alone, the fact that she could feel pain and bleed threw her for a loop as she fell to the green grass below. Yet as she laid face down on the ground, her body withering in great pain, she could still feel the joints of a doll in her elbows and knees. When she found that her attacker had been the man she loved, she became enraged and sought his demise. Now, with Inuyasha stuck to a tree by her sacred arrow and the Jewel of the Four Souls back in her hands, Kikyo collapsed to her knees as she could feel not only her life force fading from the loss of blood but from the breaking of her heart.

'I was so close...so close to becoming human...' Kikyo thought as she could still feel the stings of betrayal stabbing at her heart as she held tightly onto the crystal.

'The jewel,' Kikyo thought as she opened her hand to look at the thing with discontent.
'This wretched thing has been nothing but trouble ever since I took possession of it,' Kikyo thought before she softens her face and looked at Kaeda.

"Kaede, when I die you must burn the crystal with me. It must never fall into the wrong hands again," Kikyo instructed the ten-year-old girl who took the gem and nodded sadly. Kikyo smiled and made one last silent wish as her soul left her broken body.
