Soul Survivor - Chapter 8

Disclaimer: No, I certainly do not own any of the characters in InuYasha.

“So what must I do?” asked Kagome. The miko sat with Kaede and Miroku inside Kaede's Hut. Special wards kept InuYasha, who was off on an extended hunting trip with Shippo, from hearing or otherwise sensing anything going on within the hut. For good measure, Sango sat outside, keeping a keen eye out for any signs of the hanyou.

A raised platform had been brought into the hut for the ceremony. The young miko lay on the table, a purifying incense filling the hut. Although the smoke revealed nothing to someone without spiritual powers, to Kaede's and Miroku's eyes it helped reveal the aura that surrounded Kagome at all times.

“Do ye see it, Miroku?”

“That I do, Kaede-sama.”

“What's do you see?” asked Kagome.

“It is your aura, child. It is now a combination of yours and Kikyo's.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Drink this, child.” Kaede offered Kagome a cup of the same sedative she had given her before.

Kagome sat up just enough to take the draught. “But won't I just wake up as Kikyo again?”

“Miroku?” said Kaede.

“No, Kagome,” answered the monk. “We will separate the two parts of your soul while you are yet asleep.”

“We will then cleanse the tainted part of your soul…and perform the re-fusion. Ye shall be whole again.”

Kagome drank the sedative. “But, Kaede, won't that get rid of your sister once and for all?”

“It will put her spirit to rest,” answered the elder Miko. “And that is what I wish for her.

“I see,” said Kagome. She turned to Miroku. “I think I'm feeling sleepy. What else do I need to do.”

“Take off all your clothes and climb back onto the dais.”

A voice was heard from outside the hut. “Mi-ro-kuuuu.”

Kaede called outside to Sango. “Take it easy, Sango. Miroku is right. It is part of the ceremony.”

Kagome blushed, but started to undress.

“Kaede,” called out Sango. “Let me know if he tries anything funny and I'll be in there with Hiraikotsu.”

“Y-Y-Yes, Sango, dear,” acknowledged Miroku. He turned away from the doorway and Sango and back to Kaeda and Kagome, getting a full view of the young miko. “I can see why InuYasha smiles so much these days,” he murmured. The monk's hand began to twitch.

“You're not helping the purity in my hut, monk,” muttered Kaede.

By this time Kagome could barely stand and Miroku rushed to catch her. Together, Kaede and the monk (one eye twitching) managed to get Kagome onto the dais. Kaede gave the monk a sideways glance and draped a thin silk cover over Kagome's sleeping form.

One of Miroku's eyebrows arched. “I thought you said that for purity's sake Kagome had to remain naked.”

Kaede glared at Miroku. “We'll just have to take the chance.”

“Is he causing trouble again?” called the taijiya from outside the hut.

“I'll call ye if he does,” answered Kaede. She turned back towards Miroku, who was lifting the silk cover and peeking underneath.

<SLAP>

“Miroku!” hissed Kaede.

“Oh…uhh. I was just checking to see if she's really asleep.”

“Is she?”

“Yes.”

“Then ye need not check again.”

“Right.”

“Good.” Kaede glared at the monk. “Now, do your part.”

The elder miko and the monk took their positions on either side of the young miko. On one side of Kagome, Miroku slapped down a Sutra calling forth the spirit of Kagome. On the other side, Kaede slapped down a Sutra calling forth the spirit of Kikyo. The elder miko and the monk began chanting.

After a few minutes, Kagome's aura began to glow brighter…till it separated from her sleeping form and coalesced above her in a pink ball of light. Not quite a pure pink, because it was tainted with Kikyo's essence. The aura separated and formed into softly glowing forms of both Kagome and Kikyo…one on either side of the table holding the young miko's body.

Both ghostly forms were naked.

“I can see what InuYasha saw in Kikyo, too,” mumbled Miroku.

“Sssssssttt,” hissed Kaede. “That's my sister ye are talking about!”

“Indeed,” said the apparition. “What if your Sango found out?”

“K-Kikyo?” gasped Miroku.

The apparition smiled. “Whom did you expect?”

Kaede turned to Kagome's apparition. “Can ye speak, too?”

“I can, Kaede, but I'm a little afraid to open my eyes. Am I naked in this form, too?”

“Aye, child.”

“I think I'll keep my eyes shut for now.”

Kaede turned to her sister. “You know what we must do.”

“You are attempting a spiritual re-fusion, I believe. Kagome wrote me a note about it.” Kikyo's apparition turned serious. “I'm not sure it will work out the way you planned.”

Both Miroku and Kaede moved to speak.

“No,” interrupted Kikyo. “I think you are right. It is the only thing to try. I may not be sure it will work quite the way you want it to, but we will try.” Kikyo turned towards Kagome. “You agree?”

“Yes, we will try it,” answered Kagome's apparition.

Kikyo's apparition turned towards Kaede. “Then we are ready.”

Kaede nodded back. “Kagome, you will repeat after me.”

Miroku jumped in. “And Kikyo, you will repeat after me.”

******************

The ceremony continued for nearly an hour, after which both Kaede and Miroku noticed that the apparitions were not only beginning to move closer together, but also their colors were beginning to match as well.

It was working.

Finally it came time for each apparition's last line. The two forms were in almost perfect alignment and it was hard to tell where one stopped and the other began…although it appeared that the monk was doing his best to tell.

Kaede chanted, “And the two parts of my soul will become one, whole and indivisible.”

Kagome followed her lead, chanting her line.

Miroku nodded to Kaede and turned back to Kikyo. “And the two parts of my soul will become one, whole and indivisible.”

Kikyo nodded and proceeded. “And the two parts of my soul will become one soul, whole and indivisible.”

As the two apparitions fused and sank back into Kagome's body, one of Miroku's eyebrows arched and he called out, “Kaede! Kikyo changed the incantation!”

A large pulse of spiritual energy radiated from Kagome's body.

“Miroku?” Sango's had felt the disturbance outside.

Miroku turned to Kaede. “Do you think InuYasha felt that?”

Kaede scowled. “It was very powerful.” Kaede was still trying to fathom what her sister's change to the spell might mean. “Aye, he very well might have.”

Both of their thoughts were interrupted as they heard a gasp and turned to find Kagome sitting up on the dais. She held the silk cover in front of her.

“Are ye alright, child?” asked Kaede.

“I will be,” answered Kagome, “as soon as you chase Miroku out of here so I can get dressed.”

“You heard her,” came a voice from outside the tent.

Kaede grinned in relief. Apparently Kagome was okay. “Get ye outside, monk, so Kagome can have a little privacy. My hut is not a hot spring for ye to spy upon unnoticed.”

“I am not a pervert,” said the monk as he left to join his wife.

******************

“How are ye feeling?” asked Kaede as Kagome finished dressing.

“Good, actually.”

“So ye think that ye are done living your double life?” asked the elder miko as she handed Kagome her clothing.

“In a way.”

Kaede's ears perked up. “What exactly do ye mean?” The subdued smile from Kagome reminded her hauntingly of her sister.

“I shall not be waking up as Kikyo, nor vice versa.”

“That is good.” Kaede paused, confused. “What do you mean, child? Surely, if ye do not wake up as Kikyo, ye must wake up as Kagome.”

“We are quite pleased with the results of the ceremony.”

Kaede snapped to attention. “We?” Her gaze narrowed. “Is that you, Kagome?”

“It is me.”

“Good. For a second there you sounded like…”

“Kikyo?” The voice was slightly different. The young miko laughed. “Haven't you guessed it, dear sister?”

Kaede's brow shot up.

“Haven't you guessed it by now?” The young miko laughed in Kikyo's voice again. “All I had to do was change the final line just a little bit.” She looked into the elder miko's eyes. “Yes, you fused the parts of this soul together…only now we're both here at the same time!”

Kaede gasped. “You mean?”

“She right.” That was Kagome's voice. “We're both here, together, in the same body. I think it's going to take a little getting used to.”

“Look on the bright side.” That was Kikyo. “At least you won't be tired all the time…and not only can we take turns making love with InuYasha, but the other can always be along for the ride.”

Kaede looked at Kikyo\Kagome, horrified. “Ye cannot do this, sister!”

“Actually, I'm not having much trouble with it.” That was Kagome.
“She's right. It has some advantages.”

“Like we each have access to the other's knowledge, although that will take a while to absorb.”

“And oddly enough, this helps with the guilt I've felt that Kikyo was never able to fully experience the love I've shared with InuYasha.”

By this time, Kaede had worked her way to the door and motioned Sango and Miroku into the hut.

“Although we came close a few times,” said Kikyo's voice.

“You did?” said Kagome's voice.

“You don't know how many times I wanted to.”

“I bet I do.”

Sango's eyes widened. “How can Kagome be having a conversation with herself? And in two voices?”

“That's both my sister and Kagome in there.”

“Oh,” answered the monk. “Ohh-h-h-h.” He had been right! Kikyo had changed the incantation!

All three looked at Kagome, who was still talking with herself.

“I stumbled upon him bathing once…and almost joined him.”

“I know what you mean. One time Jaken tried to steal InuYasha's katana and I found InuYasha floating face up, completely naked.”

“No! What did you do?” Kagome had a look of concentration, and then spoke as Kikyo. “I can remember it! Ewwwwwww!”

She laughed, in Kagome's voice.

This is too confusing for this old woman.”

“Yes,” said Miroku. “It's quite confusing.”

“I know,” Sango declared to Kagome. “When you're speaking as Kagome, look to the right. When you're Kikyo, look left.”

All three (four) stared at her.

“What?”

“Don't worry,” said Kagome. “We're working it out.”

“What do you mean?” asked Kaede.

“It seems, dear sister,” said Kikyo, “that we can actually `think' to each other. We're just learning how to do that, now.”

“So you intend to go on without telling InuYasha?” asked Sango, still wide-eyed.

Kikyo spoke. “We will tell him eventually…when we think we can do it without it being too much of a shock to him. In the meantime…”

Kikyo's voice changed back to Kagome's. For the meantime, I will play the leading role.” Kagome touched the mark her mate had made on her neck. It was tingling. “You'd better take down these wards. InuYasha's coming.”

Kaede and Miroku hurriedly took down the sutras and everyone stepped outside in time to see InuYasha rushing towards them.

“Oi! Kagome! Are you alright?”

Kagome's voice. “I'm fine, InuYasha.”

“Well, you smell like you guys have been having some kind of wild party or something.”

“You could say that,” answered Miroku, unsure of what more he should say.

Kagome glared at the monk. “You'd better let me tell him.”

Miroku opened his mouth, but decided discretion was in order.

“Tell me what?”

“Oh…nothing important. We'll talk about it later…after Ramen.”

“Ramen?”

“Yeah.” Kagome actually winked at the others, and then turned back to InuYasha. “I'll make some as soon as we get to Mama's house.”

“Well, what are you waiting for? Hop on!” Before anyone else could thing to say anything, InuYasha and Kagome were off to the well.

******************

Kaede, Miroku and Sango watched a red blur streak towards the well.

“We should have told him,” said Sango.

“He'll find out,” answered Miroku.

“Aye, he will,” answered Kaede. “But how?”

******************

Kagome rode InuYasha back to the well and to the other side.

“Don't think I don't know what you're thinking,” thought Kagome.

“You're not gonna stop me from enjoying what I like,” thought Kikyo.

“You liked that?”

“Yes, I did.” There was a pause. “And I suppose you liked that.”

There was a mental giggle. “Actually…”

“You did!”

By this time, Kagome had climbed down from InuYasha's back and was walking with him back to the house.

He caught her looking up at him with a very meaningful expression.

“What?”

“Oh…nothing,” she answered out loud. Then she thought, “But you don't know what you're in for tonight.”

“I agree.”

A/N: Oops. That wasn't the way it was supposed to go. Looks like Kikyo slipped in a little change at the last minute.

InuYasha doesn't know what he's in for. And we'll just have to see how this works out for Kagome. Or Kikyo. Hmmmm. Or both.

Again, this is a rewrite. Hope you like it!

As always, please read and review. And thanks!
