Chapter Nine
From a Great Height
InuYasha woke to Kagome's soft breathing and the sound of crickets. He was warm and fairly free of pain all things considered.
He kept his eyes closed enjoying the quiet moment that he was about to ruin and ran a hand through her mussed hair. She was beautiful. And he was a fool.
When he'd staggered into the clearing he hadn't expected to see them…together. He wondered how long it'd been going on.
But he didn't wonder why she'd done that to him. He deserved it. More than the guilt, more than the pain of the loss of the one constant in his life, her love, he'd been aroused by the sight of it all. It disgusted him, but he couldn't deny it.
He wanted what his brother had. He wanted it now. If for no other reason than to hurt Sesshomaru, even though he knew it was much more than that.
InuYasha could feel the press of her back against his side. Slowly, grunting in pain, he rolled over so that he could embrace her from behind. He draped his arm over her waist, resting the flat of his palm on her thigh. He smiled a little.
This was a far better way to punish her.
And him.
The nape of her neck was especially sweet. Her scent was strongly concentrated there. It was hard to disregard the stench of Sesshomaru that clung to her, but InuYasha figured he'd soon replace it anyway. He always did like a challenge.
Kagome moaned a little in her sleep, flopping onto her back. He nuzzled her throat and cupped a breast, kneading it roughly. Surely she wasn't a virgin anymore so he didn't have to be gentle.

Kagome's eyes flew open. Someone was groping her in her sleep…again. While it wasn't an entirely unpleasant way to wake up, she'd prefer having all her feelings in order before such events transpired.
She expected to find Sesshomaru dry humping her leg. Her lips thinned in anger, but when she scooted away from him, she gasped. InuYasha stared back at her, his breathing ragged, his ears flat against his skull.
He'd been…touching her. She knew that look, she'd seen the same lustful gaze come from InuYasha's brother. Both of them scared her, but for entirely different reasons.
With Sesshomaru, he was a dark unpredictable force. With InuYasha…he was familiar, he was a friend, he was home. That look…she'd never expected to see it on his face. It made her breath hitch and her eyes fill with tears.
“InuYasha,” she breathed. “I have something to tell you.”
He closed the space between them, face twisting in pain. “I know all about it, Kagome. Feh! I ain't stupid.”
“You…you do?” She lowered her head, letting her hair form a curtain around her face. “Are you…mad at me?”
Instead of answering, he grabbed her face and pulled her to him, crushing his mouth against hers.
And there it was. The moment she'd waited three years for. The moment she'd dreamed about. And at any moment there'd be the fire of passion, that delicious tingling between her legs, the slow burn in her belly.
Yup. Any moment now. The spark would flare as bright as the sun, drowning all doubt and fear. She would be swept away, forgetting all common sense.
Kagome was a patient girl. No one could say she wasn't. Hell, she'd waited three years for a stupid kiss. So, she didn't mind waiting a little as InuYasha's lips moved awkwardly over hers. It would happen.
It had to happen because she loved him, damn it.
But it wasn't happening.
She felt awkward. Their teeth bumped painfully together. His roving hands lacked finesse. With horror she realized she didn't want to kiss him and most certainly didn't want him touching her.
But she loved him.
Unbidden, she imagined how Sesshomaru looked when she'd been pleasuring him. His lips parted, his golden eyes half eclipsed by a fringe of dark lashes, a tiny line between his eyebrows. Kagome closed her eyes and moaned against InuYasha's lips.
More images flooded her mind. Sesshomaru's pale chest lightly blushed, his eyes bleeding to crimson in his lust. The way his rich smooth voice had glided over every nerve ending in her body.
With a strangled sob, Kagome pushed InuYasha away, a trembling hand coming to her lips.
She loved InuYasha. She always would and nothing, not any force in heaven or hell, could change that. But she didn't burn for him.
Shaking her head, feeling sad and confused, Kagome rose to her feet and turned around, not even wanting to look at the hurt expression on InuYasha's face.
Her gaze locked with Sesshomaru's.
It was the most terrible thing she'd ever seen. His breath came in quick pants. He was bracing himself against the tree he'd been naked and leaning against only hours earlier, his shoulders hunched.
She expected anger. She expected him to lunge at InuYasha and tear his throat out.
He didn't do any of those things.
“You…,” he managed in a shaking voice. “Miko….”
With a frightful snarl, Sesshomaru form shimmered then condensed until he was a bright ball of light that hurt her eyes to look upon.
It hovered in the air before her for only a moment, then took off to the south at a dizzying speed.
Sesshomaru was gone.
To god knows where…and if she didn't give herself to him, he'd been dead in six days. Only now…she had no idea where and how she was going to find him.
In a fury, she whirled on InuYasha. “What did you do that for? Why now?”
He cringed making her feel instantly guilty for yelling at him. “Yeah, well, you ain't the only one with questions, stupid. Why were all over Sesshomaru earlier? Huh? Answer that one.”
Kagome frowned. “I thought you said you knew.”
“Yeah, I know. I smelled him all over you last night…in your hut. His stench covered everything. Is this to get back at me? Make me jealous?” His voice trembled with an emotion Kagome didn't want to acknowledge.
“What? No! I don't want to be with Sesshomaru at all!” At least…not really. Maybe a little. But it's just lust. This is what happens when you save yourself for that special someone, Kagome thought miserably.
InuYasha scratched his head. “You ain't makin' sense. What the hell are you going on about?”
“The potion!” she yelled, stamping her foot. “I was going to give it to you, but it got all over Sesshomaru by accident, and now he thinks he loves me. I have to sleep with him to break the spell. If I don't…he'll die!” Her words tumbled over one another, coming out in a stream of shouts and half-sobs.
“Potion? You were…going to…shit, Kagome! Why'd you have to go and do that for?”
She crossed her arms and turned away from him. “Because…because I was tired of waiting for you to do it yourself. I was sure you loved me. I just wanted…I just wanted.”
And you could've had it. What's wrong with me? Kagome shook her head. There were more important things. Rin was in trouble. Sesshomaru was lost and likely killing things in rage. “Look, InuYasha. We don't have time for this. We have to find Sesshomaru.”
“Feh! Let the bastard croak. I don't give a shit. Serves him right.”
“You know you don't mean that. We have to save Rin too.”
InuYasha chuckled dryly. “Yeah. About that…this Raiju character's going to be a real pain. He's pretty powerful.”
Kagome looked at him over her shoulder and smiled. “Of course. Up for a little adventure?”
He returned her smile and cracked his knuckles. “Hell yeah, I am. I owe that bastard a hole in the stomach and a broken jaw.”
“Well, first things first. We have to find Sesshomaru,” Kagome said.

He wasn't sure which direction he'd even fled to. It didn't matter anyway. It wasn't as though he could remember home, let alone which direction it was.
Sourly, Sesshomaru thought he would just aimlessly wander the earth until the madness over took him, and he died. It would be for the best. He'd shamed himself horribly…though…he wasn't sure how he'd done that.
He was fairly certain it had something to do with the fact that he was youkai, and he was in love with a human girl. Perhaps society frowned on this? He couldn't quite recall, but he did feel a deep, deep shame. For something.
Sesshomaru really did hate being right all the time. It was quite tiresome. He knew the girl would be with the hanyou. Yet, he just had to go and torture himself by watching. And to add insult to injury…she'd looked at him as though she felt pity. Pity! He most definitely did not want pity from a worthless filthy human.
He wondered if he should kill the both of them. Kill the hanyou for touching what was his. Kill the girl for making him feel. But even as he thought it, he knew he couldn't harm her. With a snarled curse, he smashed his fist through the trunk of a tree. Said tree exploded in a shower of splinters and leaves.
Before he could destroy any other foliage, he felt something prickle along his senses. A dark wave of youki crashed into him, and he narrowed his eyes. Sesshomaru scented the crisp evening air. He picked up a scent that was hauntingly familiar, but he couldn't quite place it.
“Show yourself,” he demanded icily of the shadows. He could feel the interlopers eyes on him, watching him. He had the distinct feeling that someone was amused at his expense.
“The rumors are true then?” said a soft female voice.
Sesshomaru drew his blade.
He heard a sigh, and then a female youkai stepped out of the darkness into a shaft of silver moonlight. Her thin lips were curved into a bemused smirk. “My, my, Sesshomaru. What a fine mess you've gotten yourself into this time.”
He leveled his blade at the woman. She had long white hair, the same near silvery shade as his. Her eyes were a darker gold, and only one magenta stripe adorned each high cheekbone, but the crescent moon that was his heritage sat proudly on her brow. Perhaps this woman was some relation to him?
“Who are you?”
Her eyes widened fractionally, then she snorted in disgust. “Don't tell me you don't remember your own mother, you insolent whelp!”
“Watch your sharp tongue, wench,” he hissed. While he entertained the idea that this could indeed be his mother, he simply could not place her face at all. Mother or not, no one talked to him with such blatant disrespect.
Her large eyes narrowed, but then she laughed. “Didn't mother tell you dallying with humans would get you into trouble, hmm? But then, you're stubborn…just like your father.” He didn't like the sneering way she'd said that…as though it were a thinly veiled insult.
She cocked her head at him, tapping her sharp chin with a dainty claw-tipped finger. “Well, I suppose I could jog your memory a little.” She sighed as though all the world's burdens were on her shoulders. “I shall just have to beat it into you, I suppose.” With a feral grin, the woman claiming to be his mother gave her knuckles a sound crack.

Rin threw open a shoji screen that led to a wide courtyard. Instantly, she was blasted by icy wind. Looking over the snow covered garden, she realized she wouldn't make it far. It'd be one thing if she at least had her kimono, but traveling with Sesshomaru-sama for three years had taught her a lot of things.
One being that you didn't go traipsing about in the snow naked.
I must be very far from home, she thought bleakly. She figured she had to be north, far north in the mountains.
With great care, she shut the shoji screen and padded silently down a darkened hallway. First order of business was to find some clothes and shoes. If she were really lucky, maybe she could find a weapon as well.
At some point during her circular flight, Raiju disappeared. She didn't know why. Perhaps he'd tired of tormenting her, but she knew he'd be back.
She hoped his absence meant that Sesshomaru-sama was here and that he was beating the guts out of the taiyoukai. She sighed. Rin didn't think Sesshomaru-sama was there yet. She didn't feel him at all.
She frowned gazing down at her now mature body. She definitely wasn't a child anymore. Rin shouldn't expect Sesshomaru-sama to bail her out of every crisis. She need to learn to rely on herself…especially if she was ever going to catch her master's eye in the way she wanted to.
She would be strong, and she would get out of this mess. With a bright smile, Rin dashed off into the darkness.
