The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Center buzzed with activity. An exhibit of kimono ranging from 200-500 years old was opening. It was beginning a tour that would take to Paris, London, New York, San Fransisco, and many other cities. It was beginning here with this party. The kimono belonged to a westerner, Makanni Spencer. They had been a gift from her fiancé for their engagement.
The tiny, western hostess stood out like pure white dove among a flock of pigeons. Her oburisdoe bore the crests of the Inutaisho family though she wouldn't really be a part of it for a few days yet. Not “officially”anyway. The sleeves and bottom of the kimono were patterned in fans with flowers between in various shades of orange, pink, and purple spread across the pale pink background. Her stiff maru obi was a darker pink with a similar flower pattern. She stood with grace, less stiffly than many of the Japanese women, carrying the weight of the layers of robes like it was nothing. Even her steps were perfect, her kimono flowed along like a stream.
“It won't be much longer now,” Makanni said so softly no one could possibly hear.
“Feh,” a man in formal kimono bearing crests similar to hers and an ancient battered sword replied. “You've been saying that for years, sis.” It was true, his sister in law had been promising the one thing he couldn't stand wait for another moment was coming soon for years. Hundreds of them. To human eyes they were fairly normal for the moment, only his silvery hair was odd. Had the humans known them better or had strong enough spiritual power, they'd see something much different. Her face would bear two magenta stripes on her cheek bones and small, pointed dog ears would be nestled in his hair. Both abnormalities were marks of their blood. They were hanyou, half-demons.
“I meant until the end of the party, Inuyasha.” she smiled. Her brother-in-law hated these things. She could feel him longing to get back in his jeans. “I promised you-- my fairy tale, then yours. The wait is ending for all of us.”
Inuyasha snorted, then closed his eyes.
~Flashback~
Kagome's eyes were glued on him as they all walked to the well They had all ready discussed this. He would be staying here, in his time. They had agreed it was better, if the well closed now it was meant to be that way. But there had been that kiss. . .
“What if you can't get back, Kagome?” Shippou asked, concerned.
“I don't know. I haven't thought that far ahead. I guess I didn't think this would really happen. . . “ Kagome answered, her eyes never leaving Inuyasha.
“It'll be all right, Shippou. You won't be alone. Remember you can stay with Sesshoumaru-sama and me. Koganemaru will need you to play with and you have Inuyasha, Miroku, and Sango,” Makanni said softly. Her eyes shifted to Kagome, “None of us will be alone.” Sango and Miroku nodded in agreement. They all wanted to encourage Kagome to do what she needed, but the idea of her not coming back was hard.
“I suppose, but I will miss you.” the kitsune said, hugging Kagome one last time.
“I may be able to come back. We just don't know yet. I may see all of you in a few minutes then we'll laugh about this.” Kagome said laughing. They all chuckled for a moment then stood in silence as she turned to the well.
Inuyasha grabbed her arm before she jumped into the well. He pulled her into a rough embrace, holding her for several minutes before dropping his hands to his sides and walking away.
~End Flashback~
Inutaisho Sesshoumaru entered the museum in his impeccably white antique kimono and armor- snapping his brother back to reality. He looked the part of a Feudal Era lord. The room shifted with his presence. He filled all the empty space, drawing eyes to him as he made his way to his mate's side. The corners of his mouth twitched into a tiny, approving smile just before he bowed to her. She bowed-- gracefully for an American the news would say-- then beamed up at him. Five hundred years dulled nothing between them, she glowed with adoration like the twenty-two year old the crowd thought she was. His face showed little more emotion than the approval, what it lacked his actions showed. He humored her in her game. The fake engagement was all for her amusement. An elaborate contrivance to make her into a fairy tale princess.
Inuyasha crept away from them to the case that held his Fire Rat. The party was part of her fairy tale, that haori and hakama were part of his. All the words he couldn't say back then flooded his mind. Time changed so many things, but she would be exactly as he remembered. A few more days. . . .
