He never could stand to see her in pain.
He never could stand to see her cry.
And when he could stand no more, the wounds too much for even him to bear, he found solace in the knowledge that she was safe. With the last of his strength, he raised a hand to brush the tears from her cheeks and, for the first time in centuries, smiled a weak, but genuine, smile.
Too weary to linger, his amber eyes slowly shut. Soon all he knew was the peace of his sleep.
The rain fell in torrents that night as the young woman mourned the man who sacrificed everything for her . . . the man who should have lived for a millennium . . . the man who died far too young.
Though frozen and soaked to the bone, she stayed at his side. Hours passed like days. She knew she should go, but could not bring herself to leave. She did not know what to do.
She could not stand to go on without him.
