Prologue

Kagome Higuarshi. That's her name and her life consisted of helping others and putting others happiness before her own. Was this supposed to be her life? Kagome stared at herself in the mirror and tears ran down her sweet face. She touched a tear that gracefully rolled down her cheek.

“What's missing from my life..?”

[Flashback]

A large hand smashed against her face. She had her eyes tightly closed, thinking, hoping and wishing that this was a dream. She opened her eyes to see the rage-filled eyes staring deeply into her soul, these eyes which haunted her every night.

Slap after slap, he wouldn't stop, and held nothing back. She never knew why every little thing she did angered him. Was it the resemblance of her mother that angered him so? Maybe…

Kagome raised her arms in front of her face, knowing that even this little motion would not protect her from the abuse she received almost everyday.
Her little defense mechanism angered her father even more. She deserved this. She knew that he believed she deserved it; but in the end, she would never get to speak her peace.

She cried out as strong hands gripped at her neck. “Oh god.” She thought, “Just do it… end it… I give up.” Tears ran endlessly down her face. She had had enough of both of her parents and she was ready to accept what God was offering her. An offer to rest in peace finally and to escape what seemed like hell to her. Her hands went up to her fathers, trying to loosen the grip he had on her neck. She had her back pressed against the wall and her father raised her up, as if she weighed nothing.

As if she was nothing.

She couldn't breathe and the thought of being suffocated to death scared her. Maybe she wanted to live after all. Why wasn't he letting her go? That's usually the routine; he would hurt her and let her go. This time, however, felt longer than most and it was evident that he wasn't going to let go anytime soon. She squeezed her eyes tight, praying that everything will be okay. She chanted in her head, “I'm Strong..I'm Strong… I can do this..”
As she shut her eyes, white lightning danced around behind her eyelids. Every time she tried to gulp down a breath the lighting would grow in size, until she couldn't see the white streaks anymore. She only saw darkness. What happened to the white light at the end of the tunnel? Did she just escape it once again?

No.

She would get to live another day.

[End Flashback]

She sat alone in her room, wondering what she ever did to deserve such hatred from the two people who mean more than anything in her life. Her parents were supposed to love her, but instead they pushed her to become someone, yet never acted like they gave a shit.

Everything they had told her to do, to say, to achieve; she did it all, wanting just a small reward in the end; Recognition.
She wanted to hear the words, `I'm so proud of you' or even a `thank you' but that alone was hard to get out of her parents mouths. She would never understand how she cheated life. Everything she remembers about her past are all negative and all memories have something to do with hurting someone. If not herself, then her mother, or her mother hurting her father. Hurt. It was always there. Everyone went through heartbreak. When will she ever experience happiness? As she stared into the mirror, her eyes glazed over and she stared at her reflection, never blinking, never moving..

[Flashback]

“Mommy?”

Kagome looked around the house that was owned by her Grandmother. She had woken up to an emp
ty bed and her little heart began to beat heavily in her chest as she wondered where her mother went.

“Maaaaa…
?
Her eyes were already accustomed to the darkness, her feet shuffling on the carpet, tickling her toes. She went everywhere; the living room, the garage, the back yard, the dining room, family room, until she ended up next to the big window that lead to the outside world. Kagome was never allowed outside, never allowed to go out and play with friends. So she waited by the window. It was almost like a moving picture. Or maybe she was the picture just staring out into the world. She didn't know but she waited.

“Maybe Mommy went to go get medicine..”

That's what mommy referred it to. But it was nothing like medicine. It was drugs. Her mom was addicted to methamphetamines.

“That's why mommy and daddy got a divorce. Because mommy was bad and daddy hit her.” Kagome whispered to herself.

She continued to wait until her little eyes couldn't fight against the sleep. She fell asleep by the window, waiting for mommy.

As she was sleeping, Kagome had a bad dream. It was the worst dream she would ever have, and she would have it frequently. It was more of a memory, not even a dream, because it wasn't made up. What played in her mind as she slept was real.

When she was a baby still, she remembered sitting on the couch with her Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse blanket. She watched as her mother and father chased each other around the kitchen with knives in their hands. Both bleeding, both screaming. That was the last and only memory she had of her parents. That was the only memory she had of ever having a family. And she was always reminded of that horrible day.

[End Flashback]

Kagome had grown tired and decided to let sleep take over her small body. After crying for so long, all her life, she had grown tired of reminiscing. She wanted to move on. She was determined that she would.

As her grandmother had told her, “Mark my words… You'll be somebody”

She shut her eyes and she finally had a good nights sleep, for the first time, in a very long time.
