Chapter Three

Inuyasha jogged by himself around the track. Kagome was playing volleyball with the rest of the team on the other side of the fence. He almost tripped when Kagome jumped and smacked the ball to the other side. He would never forget how her body arched sightly and her feet lifted when she moved. The almost non existant clothes she wore for the game was enough to send his senses realing.

Kagome was his friend. His best friend. But one day he had suddenly realised that his friend was also something more to him. She was the reason he could breathe. She was the reason he woke in the morning. So he could see her face. So he could hear her voice. So he could breathe in her scent of wildflowers and warm earth.

When he was little he had been very brave around everyone else, but with Kagome he had shown his real self. He could still remember the nights when he had been so terrified of being alone that he had gone to her house and snuck into her window. He remembered how she had silently pulled him to the bed beside her and curled up with him. Not asking any questions or trying to get him to talk. She had simply let him hold her and had fallen asleep in his arms. After that it had been almost constant. Whenever she was scared he had somehow known. Had somehow realised that she needed him and had gone to her to hold her, trying to give her the peace that he found when he was with her. Years had swiftly gone by, leaving their childhood as a memory. But now after all they had been through they still had that boond, that unique instinct that set their friendship as something special.

Inuyasha groaned as Miroku and Kouga ran up to jog with him. They started laughing as they looked to where his rapt attention had been. Kouga slapped him on the back as Miroku shook his head.

"You know that if you stare at her long enough you might get her to look back." Kouga grinned at his grumbling friend. Miroku smiled as he spoke up.

"So Inuyasha... What exactly do you think she was dreaming about last week?" That comment earned him a growl as Inuyasha jerked his amber gaze to Kouga.

"You told the pervert? Who else have you told?" Kouga twitched as he moved a safe distance from the aggravated hanyou. He knew what Inuyasha was like when he was angry. Especially if it had anything to do with Kagome. A guy had taken Kagome on a date once. When he brought her back to her room and wanted a kiss Kagome wouldn't give it to him. The guy had gotten angry and gripped Kagome's arm a little too tightly. The miko had yipped softly, not enough for anyone but the human to hear. But somehow Inuyasha had known. He had been playing poker with Kouga and Miroku when he suddenly dropped his cards and ran from the room. By the time his friends had found him, Inuyasha had the poor guy shoved into the wall and was growling a warning at him. The guy had been so scared of Inuyasha's claws that he had about peed his pants. To this day Kouga still wondered how Inuyasha had known that Kagome needed him. He had been in the same room and hadn't heard Kagome.

That same menacing look was spread across Inuyasha's angry face. Kouga figured he better fess up before Inuyasha took his head off.

"I only told Miroku. Ayame hasn't told anyone." He waited until Inuyasha had calmed before they started to jog again. The guys spent about an hour jogging before they started back.

Kagome must have finally noticed them, because she turned and waved at Inuyasha. He smiled and started to wave back when he saw the ball headed straight for her head. He moved in a blur as he leaped at it. He had almost reached her, so close that he could hear her breathing and see her eyes move to where he was looking. She gasped slightly before the ball smacked her right in the head. Inuyasha caught her as her beautiful eyes slid shut. He whined at the pain he had seen in her brown eyes before she slipped out of consciousness.

When she came to all she saw was Inuyasha leaning over her. She smiled at him and waited until he smiled back.

"What happened?" Inuyasha cringed at her innocent question.

"A ball hit you in the head. I...I'm sorry. I couldn't reach it on time." He hung his head slightly, his cute little ears flattening against his head as if he was getting punished. In truth he probably was. He had a bad habit of punishing himself when she got hurt.

"It's okay dog-boy. You can't do everything. Besides. I'm fine now." She gave him her best smile. She really was hurting but she knew he would feel worse if she said anything.

A school nurse came over and handed her some heavy duty asprin with stern instructions to go to bed immediately after she took them. Inuyasha nodded seriously at everything the nurse said. He was obviously going to take it to heart. After filling out the paperwork Inuyasha picked her up gently and headed out of the office.

She loved it when he did this. He didn't carry her as much as he used to so it was a nice treat when he did. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she rested her head against his chest. He walked slowly to the elevator before hitting their floor number. They were alone so she let her hand wander up to his fluffy ear. Once she started playing with apendage a soft rumbling sound entered her ears. Inuyasha was...purring?

She let go of his ear and the rumbling stopped. She didn't dare look up, in case he was looking at her. The metal doors opened and they stepped out into the bustle of the hallway. All the offices and class rooms were in one building. The class rooms were on the lower floors so the students usually didn't use the elevator.

Inuyasha walked slowly towards the entrance trying not to justle her. He knew that she was in pain and wouldn't tell him. He could smell it on her.

Kagome wanted to bury her head in his chest at the looks she was getting, but she doubted that that would help. People who knew that they were only friends were giving them odd looks and the girls who didn't know were sending her death glares for being in Inuyasha's arms. She almost groaned when one girl in paticular zeroed in on the scene they were making. Kikyo headed their way, but thankfully was stopped by one of the teachers.

Once they were outside Kagome let her head fall onto Inuyasha's chest. He started the oddly soothing rumble again. She must have fallen asleep at some point between leaving the building and going to her room because suddenly she was sitting on a soft bed and Inuyasha was telling her to take the evil pills. All she wanted to do was go to sleep. Inuyasha jostled her slightly and put the pills between her lips. Then he put a glass against her mouth urging her to drink deeply. She swallowed the pills in one gulp then dropped against the pillow. She felt the matress move as a body snuggled in beside her. She immediately curled into the safety of Inuyasha's arms and fell into blissful darkness.

Kagome yawned slightly as she stretched. A warm body shifted against her own as she moved. She kept her eyes closed as she spoke. "Inuyasha? I think it's become a habit waking up with you. I don't even bother to close my window anymore. When did you get in here anyway?" Warm breath brushed across her eyelids and caressed the soft hair that fell across her cheek.

"I'm glad you don't mind." She smiled as she snuggled closer and slowly she drifted back to sleep, not even realising that he hadn't answered her question. She was on the brink of the abiss when she heard a deep voice that wasn't coming from the chest she was laying on.

"The only problem is that this is his room not yours. When did you get here Kagome?" She popped open her eyes as she moved to look over her shoulder. Kouga stood below her in his towel. Inuyasha growled at him, but it didn't faze the wolf.

"If you guys needed the room all you had to do was ask." Inuyasha sat up this time as he growled menacingly at his roommate. Kagome gasped as she looked down. She was on the top bunkbed and Kouga was standing in the center of a pile of clothes below. She started to squirm as Kouga left the room. Inuyasha pulled her tightly against his chest to keep her from moving. She growled at him but he didn't move. She finally stopped and looked up at him.

"Why am I in your room?"

" I don't have a key to get into your room and I didn't think it would be easy to get both of us through your bedroom window so I brought you here. Once you took your medicine you were out." He shrugged slightly moving her head with his shoulder. She sighed as she got up to get off of his bed.

Her feet dangled from the bunk as she realized two things. First. The bed was higher than most bunk beds. Her head was very close to the ceiling. Second. It didn't have stairs connected to it. How does he get up here?

She turned to the side to speak to him but something in his gaze made her stop. She had never seen that look on his face before. It was somewhere between undeniable pleasure and deep pain. His eyes were closed as he rested his head on one arm. The other arm was resting on his chest, his claws slowly raking against the tanned skin that covered his thick muscles. She watched the play of emotions across his face, purely fascinated. In all the years she had known him Inuyasha had never been so completely open. Even when he told her about his parents and his half brother. Even when he held her in his arms and let her cry herself out about the stupidest things. Even when he had thanked her for standing up to bullies he could have easily handled.

Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke his name. "Inu..Inuyasha?" His eyes slowly opened, his amber gaze captured hers and refused to let go. In that moment she knew, she saw, what he had never said. Understood what his soul was saying to her. Tears filled her eyes, looking at him in wonder, she realised that it didn't scare her. He was as much a part of her as her heart, as her soul. She was filled with so much happiness she felt like she would burst.

"Oh Inuyasha. Why didn't you tell me?" Her whispered question was filled with so much emotion, so much passion. It was as if her very voice had cradled him in it's velvety folds. He lifted his hand and brushed away her tears with his fingers. He could smell the saltyness, hear the slight tremble in her breathing. She moved without warning, pushing herself against his chest as she sobbed, mumbling words he didn't understand. He rested his chin on top of her head, brushing her back with his fingers as he pulled her into his lap.

He held her gently as her sobbing slowed. She shuddered before looking up at him again. She leaned forward and gently cradled his face in her small hands. Her hesitant smile was like the first rays of sunshine, the first breaking of light after a night of complete darkness.

He groaned deep in his throat as he leaned down and carefully captured her lips with his own. He brushed her lips once, then again as she responded to him. Her hands slid up into his hair, grabbing his ears at the base, rubbing against the downy soft hairs. He pulled her flush against him, molding her body with his. She moaned quietly as his tongue slid against her bottom lip.

Her lips parted in a gasp as his hands slid from her back to pull her hips closer. He used it to his andvantage, carefully caressing her mouth with his tongue. She moved with him, resting on top of his chest as he laid back down.

Her tongue slid against his as she straddled his waist. He growled as her heat filled his senses. Her scent was driving him to the brink. A place where sanity dissapeared and passion took control. He knew where this was headed and knew he had to stop.

He pulled away with a slight groan, placing soft kisses around her lips until his breathing calmed. He opened his eyes and looked up at her. The one creature who could drive him insane with a simple touch. Her eyes were closed as she breathed heavily. Her hands on his chest held her up, her head hung as her long black hair formed a curtain around them. He couldn't help but smile at her. The beautiful creation that was Kagome.

She finally opened her heavily lidded eyes and looked down at him. He was watching her, trying to gouge her reaction. His eyes looked so worried, yet excited at the same time. She gave him a smile before she realised her position. Her cheeks flushed as she tried to crawl off. His hands grasped her waist and put gentle pressure on her slim hips. She took the hint and stopped moving.

Raising her eyes to his she gave him a questioning look. He smiled. "If you move again your gonna fall on the floor. I'll tell you now from personal experience. It hurts when you hit that floor." He grinned at her again as she started to laugh.

"You?! Fall out of bed?! How?" He blushed slightly. "The first time Kouga and Ayame came here. I guess they had forgotten I was sleeping. Ayame's yelling woke me up. It shocked me so bad that I jumped and ended up falling. It hurt but the expressions on their faces was priceless." Kagome was blushing as her mouth gaped open. Inuyasha used his claw to gently tip her mouth closed.

His expression suddenly turned serious. "Kagome? We..uh...We need to talk." Kagome nodded slowly as Inuyasha pulled himself to a sitting position. Kagome moved so that her back was to his chest, hoping that it would make whatever he was going to say easier.

"You know that I'm a hanyou. I'm alot like a huhman but still have youkai traits. And like regular youkai when I...um...choose a mate it's forever." Kagome was suddenly very thankful he couldn't see her face. It had to be redder than his crimson sheets. "I love you Kagome. I've always loved you. But I need you to know. If we do this there's no turning back." Kagome smiled through her tears as she turned her head to lok up at him. He was so earnest. Trying his hardest to make her understand. She turned completely around. His arms loosened enough to let her move in his grasp without having to let go.

"I love you too Inuyasha. I guess I just never realised it. You've always been there for me. Always come to my rescue. I want to be with you Inuyasha. I want to know you completely. I want to be a part of you." Her voice was wispy as she spoke, begging him to understand her heart.

He brushed her bangs out of her eyes. He smiled at her and nodded as she let out a huge breath. She giggled and hugged him tight. He couldn't help but laugh with her. Kagome was his. She was going to stay with him. Forever.
