Chapter Twenty-Nine

It was quiet here. He wasn’t sure what to do. Shinju was in the room next to him. The nurses said she was still sleeping. He couldn’t go see her again until after he ate lunch. Momma was curled up on the chair beside his bed asleep. His Pappa was standing at the window, looking at the city below them.

He knew that he wasn’t the same as when they saw him before. He didn’t act like he did before. Momma was smiling again though. Shinju’s daddy had woken up even with the medicine still in him. He was getting better. Everyone was getting better. Even him. His insides weren’t though. Inside he still thought like he was trapped. Noises he didn’t recognize made him go to the quiet place. The first time it happened had scared Momma. She cried and called a doctor to come check on him. His Pappa had talked to him and let him know it was ok to see what was going on around him.

His Pappa was trying really hard to make it better. Takeru could see it, he just wasn’t sure what would make it better. He didn’t think talking to the police would help. Bastard was dead. He had killed him for Shinju. His Pappa and Uncle Sesshomaru had gone back and made sure the body was there for the police to look at. They were gonna come today and talk to him about what happened. Momma didn’t want them there but Pappa said it would help them understand why. Takeru knew why. Bastard wanted to hurt his Momma. That was why.

Two guards from outside his room opened the door and let in a man in a business suit. He stunk like perfume and something nasty. Beer. Takeru smelled beer on the man. Inuyasha woke up Kagome and made the introductions.

“Hello Takeru. My name is Justin Blackwell. I just want to talk to you about the person that took you. Do you feel like answering some questions?”

He didn’t like how he smelled but the man wasn’t threatening.

“I can answer questions.” Blackwell smiled in encouragement.

“Alright Takeru. Tell me what happened after you went to school.”

“I finished all my classes and waited in the classroom like Pappa told me to. But I heard a weird noise so I went to find out what it was. Shinju was crying over her Daddy. There was blood everywhere. Even on Shinju. Someone hit me on the head before I could do anything else.” Takeru growled the last bit. Inuyasha watched in silence as Takeru’s eyes flashed.

“You are doing really well. What happened when you woke up?”

“Shinju was crying. Her cheeks were red from crying. Bastard didn’t want her. But I did. I took care of her. I made sure she ate the bread and drank all the chocolate milk.”

Blackwell did his best not to cringe but Takeru could smell the unease on the man.

“Bastard took me out of the cold room. He covered my eyes so I couldn’t see him at first. After the first time he wanted me to see him.”

Kagome rubbed his back in slow warm circles. Inuyasha stood at his other side.

“He said he wanted to make sure he could hurt Pappa but he had to test everything on me first. Hurting Momma was what he wanted.”

“You have a very good memory Takeru. Can you tell me what the man looked like?”

This confused him. Bastard was dead. What did it matter?

“He was Bastard. He had brown hair and eyes. He’s dead. He thought Shinju was dead. He tried to touch her. He’s not allowed to touch her! He can hurt me. He can’t hurt Shinju. It’s not her fault!”

Mr. Blackwell nodded his head solemnly as he wrote something in his notebook.

“You did a really good job of protecting Shinju. You are right. The man is dead. I’m going to show you some pictures and I want you to show me which one is the man that took you. Can you do that for me Takeru?”

Momma scowled at Mr. Blackwell. “Is this really necessary?”

“It’s ok Momma. Bastard is dead. I can show you which one he is.”

Blackwell waited until Kagome nodded her assent before he laid the pictures out on the small hospital table.

Takeru studied them all carefully. They all looked similar but he could still tell which one was Bastard. He pointed at the right one and pushed it towards Mr. Blackwell.

“That one. That’s Bastard.”

*******
Inuyasha paced outside the hospital. He kept sucking in great mouthfuls of cold air. Trying his best to calm himself. It had been Hojo all along. This entire time he was right there gloating as they searched everywhere for their children. But now he was dead and there was nothing he could do about it.

He took one final deep breath before taking the elevator back up to his floor and heading for Takeru’s room. Kagome was texting someone when he walked in. He took the chance to study her. He had a picture of who she was now in his head, but there was something else there. Some part of his mind brought up the picture of them in her room and begged him to remember who he was. Who they were together.

“They’ve taken Takeru to see Shinju. Sango needed a break for some sleep.” Kagome stopped her texting and looked up when he didn’t answer her.

“Are you ok? Inuyasha?” Creases appeared between her eyebrows as she studied him.

“I know now isn’t the best time, but I need to know from you. What were we like? Who was I before?” He could feel her aura shudder even as he watched her eyes close. Her shoulders hunched as she sat carefully down on the bed.

“You were my lover and my best friend. You were the guiding force in everything I did. I didn’t truly understand all of what you were to me until after you were gone. I was completely lost and I doubt that without Takeru and our bond I never would have survived losing you.”

Tears were gathering behind her eyes but she never let them fall. He walked away from the door and sat beside her.

“We met when we were very young. All through school we were best friends and almost never separated. When I was sad you somehow knew and showed up at my house to cheer me up. After we graduated we went to the same college and lived in the same dorm. I used to leave my window open so that you could climb through and curl up with me at night.”

A tear finally broke free at her quiet admission. Inuyasha caught it before it could fall past her soft delicate cheek.

“We fell in love slowly but I guess I just hadn’t realized it until then. But I was yours and when you told me that for you it was forever I believed. You marked me that night and we created our son. I should have known then that a love like ours wouldn’t last. It was far too fragile a thing to be there forever. A few days later you left for a trip on one of your classes. From what we’ve learned now, Hojo had placed a bomb on one of the students while they were unaware. The plane blew up and we thought all who had been on it were dead. Including you.”

Kagome whispered the last few words. Her hands were curled in her lap. Her body was stiff and hunched in on itself. He couldn’t take it. Inuyasha curled his arms around her slight frame. He tugged her gently until she was resting against his chest. With his head resting on top of hers and her ears listening to his heartbeat he told her the truth.
“Our love was fragile, but certainly not breakable. In another life I cherished you, you were the reason I breathed and I held you above all else. I know I’m not the same man I was and I don’t know if I ever will be again. I don’t know if I will remember our past, but I do still want us to have a future. Our love is still there. It just hasn’t had time to grow.”

I promise you my love. I will be the man you need.
