Push Onward

Gale force winds buffeted him, but he pushed onward. His ears remained plastered against his skull to shield their sensitive inner workings from the stinging hail. His face had been reddened by the separate impacts of thousands of the tiny ice balls, and he was soaked to the bone because many more had stuck to his clothing and melted against it. He pressed on with head and shoulders lowered against the weather, raising them occasionally only to avoid walking into a tree. His bare feet were almost numb, even his demonic blood having difficulty keeping them warm. A sudden gust caused him to stumble, and he nearly cried out as a solid sheet of snow cascade down upon him, shaken loose from the branches above. He shook himself free and shivered, but still he pushed on. For you see, he was almost home.

He could see it now. He would walk inside the hut, and his wife would leap to her feet instantly. She would be worried about him, fret over him as she helped him remove his frozen clothing. She would wrap him in a dry robe and serve him warm tea from the fire she no doubt had going at this very moment. She would take care of him. And when it came time to go to bed, they would huddle together in their futon, sharing their body heat in the same way they now shared their very lives. That was what he looked forward to the most. Nothing could make him feel cold when they were together. No force of wind nor rain nor hail could chill him, nor any temperature no matter how low. His wife's love was mightier than nature itself.

Cracking a smile despite his painfully frozen lips, he pushed onward.
