Clues and Proof

“Inuyasha? Could you come down here, please?” Kagome called up into Goshinboku's branches, failing to keep her voice completely calm. It all made sense now; the recurring nausea that she had passed off as a persistent stomach virus, the annoyingly constant overprotectiveness of her hanyou husband, the frustratingly gentle way in which they made love. They were all pieces to the puzzle, and the final, illuminating clue had clicked into place this morning when she realized she was a full week late on her period. Finally Inuyasha leapt down from the tree and landed in front of her, facing her but not meeting her eyes.

“Inuyasha…am I pregnant?” The hanyou took a long time to respond.

“Yes.”

“Well, are you happy?” Kagome asked desperately, interpreting his body language and hoping she was wrong.

“Of course I am!” he declared, angered by the fact that she would ask such a thing. But taking a look at her confused, teary-eyed expression, he knew he had some explaining to do. He heaved a small, defeated sigh.

“I tried to tell you,” he mumbled, the sound barely above a whisper, “but I was scared.” Just like that, Kagome felt her upset melt away. She enfolded him in a tender embrace, one which he returned.

“It is scary,” she agreed, “but we both want a family. And wouldn't you do anything for this baby?” He nodded, and Kagome smiled up at him. “You're going to be an amazing father, Inuyasha.”

“You really think so?” he wondered, grinning tentatively.

“I know so. And you know,” she said, her tone mischievous, “you don't have to treat me like a porcelain doll. I'm not going to break.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah,” she affirmed, grabbing his hand and leading him back to their hut to prove it to him.
