Generosity

Inuyasha stared at the small girl, probably only seven or eight years old. Her short yukata was torn and stained, and patches of dirt marred her skin. An orphan, he realized, just scraping by in some poor village. She was skinny, but not devastatingly so, though much of the playfulness of youth had been driven from her eyes. Those dark orbs now stared hungrily at him, specifically the object in his palm.

He had crept away from the others in order to eat his last cup of ramen in solitude. It would be at least a week before he could get another, so he had intended to savor it. But none of that mattered now, not when those big, brown eyes were pleading with him. A dozen memories flashed through his mind, taking him back to a place in time where a young hanyou, freshly orphaned, had held hope that humanity's generosity would carry him to adulthood. How long had it taken him to realize the folly of such faith? Not very long; he had quickly decided to provide for himself, and had never looked back.

But this child still held hope, some trust that the people around her wouldn't let her starve to death. And he was not going to be the one to extinguish that light. Sighing wistfully, he held out his hand. The girl hesitated for only a moment, then snatched the ramen and began devouring it. Inuyasha turned away, unable to watch. It was then that he realized he had an audience.

Fortunately, it consisted of only one person, the sole individual on this earth he was not afraid to show his softer side to. Kagome's eyes shone with pride, but he shrugged off her silent adoration. It wasn't a big deal. At least, not anymore.
