Kagome woke alone, but before the first twinge of sadness could take hold a familiar warmth filled her, and though it didn’t make sense, she would have said her heart heard InuYasha telling her not to worry and to come down for dinner.
She slipped out of bed and began to dress a soft smiling lifting the corners of her mouth as she noticed InuYasha’s name across her heart.
She knew she would never forget the exact moment their new bond had snapped into place. It had been like nothing she could ever hope to describe in something so trivial as words. InuYasha loved her. In fact his love her for had been so strong through their bond that it had sent stars flashing behind her eyes and she had very nearly lost consciousness. It had only been InuYasha’s gentle coaxing that had kept her with him until it was done.
The uncontrolled rush of emotion had faded and left her drained. A part of her wondered if the fact that InuYasha hadn’t been as deeply affected meant that she didn’t love him as much as he did her.
Then she heard him again. Don’t be stupid.
She laughed softly and finished zipping her skirt before heading down stairs. She entered the kitchen to find her whole family as well as Sesshoumaru waiting for her. All of her favorite foods were lined up on the kitchen counter and on the table was a small pile of gifts. InuYasha was flushed and she wondered how he had managed to hide this from her. They were definitely going to have a long talk after dinner.
“Come, sit,” her mother said with a smile, pulling out the chair beside InuYasha. “Sesshoumaru-sama called and told us the good news and we decided to put together a small celebration. It’s not much, but it was short notice. When you two decide to get married we’ll plan a real party.”
Kagome cleared her throat, “Mama, I don’t think… I mean, InuYasha…”
Asami just continued to smile as she urged Kagome into her chair. “InuYasha agrees that the two of you should definitely get married. After all, we wouldn’t want there to be any misunderstandings should a human man mistakenly think that you are unattached.”
Kagome’s eyes widened. Her mother could be so devious when she wanted to be. She wondered just how long her mother had had InuYasha cornered down here in the kitchen without her. Though at the thought of getting the wedding she had always dreamed of that didn’t really seem to matter as much as the results.
“Well, don’t just sit there, Sis,” Souta prodded. “The food is getting cold.”
Kagome reached for the closest gift as InuYasha’s hand settled on her thigh. She looked right him and thought as hard as she could. You could have warned me.
He smirked. No fun in that.
The gift bag had a long yellow envelope inside. She pulled back the brads and drew out the papers. Her brows furrowed as she started to read.
“Inoue…InuYasha,” Kagome said and then she gasped. She looked at Sesshoumaru. “This is a birth record for InuYasha.” She flipped through the remaining papers. “Everything he needs to establish an identity in this time. And… bank accounts. Kuso!”
“Kagome!”
Kagome blushed as everyone in the room but Sesshoumaru shouted her name in disapproval or surprise.
“Sorry, but Mama, look at this,” she said handing the paper to her mother.
“Oh, oh,” Asami said her eyes widening. “This is… Oh my.”
“Would someone like to tell me what the hell is going on?” InuYasha asked.
Asami smiled and tucked the papers back into the envelope. “Nothing to worry about. It seems your brother has been setting aside a bit of money for you over the years. Quite a bit actually. It was a surprise is all.”
“Too much,” Kagome said, grudgingly.
Being from a shrine family, Kagome was used to having just enough to get by on, so upon seeing all those zeros, a part of her had already been going on a mental shopping spree, but her rational mind told her it was far too much.
Sesshomaru rolled his eyes. “That is nothing to me. You forget that I have had 500 year to prepare for InuYasha’s final arrival in this era. It is his to use or not. It makes no difference to this Sesshoumaru. However, do not think to insult me by attempting to refuse my gift.”
Asami cleared her throat. “Well, that’s settles it. I’ll just hang onto this for now. Kagome, why don’t you open something else?”
Kagome was almost afraid to look in the next bag, but she knew her mother would expect her to be polite and open the rest of her gifts. She peeked inside the bag and her face heated. “Mama!”
The older woman laughed. “You can open that one later.”
“Oh that must be the one Mom got in the fancy underwear store. The one where she made me and jii-chan wait outside,” Souta all but shouted.
Kagome choked and gasped. How could they be so cruel, torturing her like this? At least there was only one gift left, and a small one at that. She tore the paper and opened the small box with no little amount of trepidation. When she saw what was inside, tears filled her eyes.
“Mama?”
“Yes, mine and your father’s,” she said with a gentle smile. “I know he would have wanted me to give them to you and,” she continued with a wink, “they should help with avoiding any of the misunderstandings I mentioned earlier until the wedding. You should try them on sometime tonight so we can see if they need to be sized.”
Kagome nodded. “Thanks, Mama, everyone.”
“Now, let’s eat!” Souta said.

Kagome and InuYasha slipped away out onto the shrine grounds once dinner was over and Sesshoumaru was gone. They walked hand in hand until they found themselves under the Goshinboku.
“You know, it ain’t because I love you more,” he began. “I talked to Sesshoumaru after… I mean you almost passed out. I sure as hell didn’t want to talk to him about… about that, but I wanted to know if you were okay more.”
Beside him Kagome smiled and it encouraged him to continue.
“He said that it was just because you’re human,” InuYasha told her, pulling her close. “He even said you must be very strong willed for a human to have stayed conscious. Your body wasn’t made to handle youki. Hell, yours was made to purify it, so I’m sure it was a big adjustment. He told me when he came back that he wasn’t even really sure it was going to work, that he’d never heard of a miko accepting youki or the other way around. He seemed pretty surprised that it didn’t cause me any pain to accept your spiritual powers.”
Kagome smiled against his chest. “Maybe it’s because I’m untrained, but my powers have never hurt you or Shippou or any other youkai who wasn’t a threat.” She lifted her head and brought one hand to his face. “Or maybe it’s just because I would never have forgiven myself if I had hurt you, not after everything else.”
He grabbed her hand and held it, pulling it against his chest. “Keh, I’m sorry I didn’t warn you earlier.”
Kagome shook her head. “It’s okay. Besides I’ve already thought of the perfect way for you to make it up to me. You can tell me how it was you managed to block it from me in the first place.”
“Sesshomaru showed me how to do it,” he replied. “He said it gets easier, that the reason we are feeling everything so strongly is just because we’re newly mated. Once the bond settles only really strong emotions and thoughts will get through unless we want them to. I’ll try and show you tonight.” InuYasha coughed a little. “He said it would be easier to show you when our bond is most open…right after we … since you aren’t youkai that is. If you want to… I mean…”
“I want to,” she admitted quietly as she looked into his eyes.
“Gods woman,” he groaned, pressing himself against her. “Are you trying to kill me, smelling like that, looking at me like that when I can’t do a damn thing about it.”
She giggled and he growled pressing his lips to her neck and nibbling at her skin.
“Oh, kami-sama, InuYasha,” she gasped. “Why does it feel.. too much. Oh!”
“New bond,” he rasped out tearing himself away from her.
“Apparently the more we… do that, the faster is settles. Sesshomaru said something about a positive feedback loop, until it was done. Whatever that means.”
Kagome just nodded as she rubbed her hands along her arms, even though the evening was warm, she still felt a chill in the air.
“You’re cold?” InuYasha asked, unaware that his posture had changed in response to something she was feeling.
She shook her head. “I think… I think something is coming.”
It was then that he realized what he was feeling was what an unfamiliar youki felt like to Kagome. “Go get your bow and get your family secured. I don’t feel the youki yet, so we still have a few minutes.”
agome ran for the house and InuYasha drew Tetsusiaga and took up a defensive stance. Her mother turned as she dashed into the genkan.
“Safe room, now.”
Asami nodded and Kagome grabbed her bow and arrows. She trusted that her mother would get her brother and grandfather to her mother’s room which she kept warded at all times , with the strongest wards she knew how to make.
InuYasha didn’t turn as she approached. “They safe?”
“Yes,” she said stepping up beside him. “You can feel it now can’t you? It seems twice as strong now but I think it’s because I am feeling them through you as well as with my own powers. Maybe you should block me until we know what we are dealing with.”
She felt it the moment he cut her off and found that she had been right. Now that it was just her own power she was able to better discern what they were up against. “Two, then. Not weak, but neither one has anywhere close to your youki. They might not even be able to get through my wards. Can you tell what they are yet?”
He sniffed a few times. “Pretty sure one’s a snake.” He took another deep breath. “Damn it, I fucking hate poisonous youkai. Get behind me in just in case the bastard tries to spray us as soon as he’s in sight.”
“Okay,” she agreed, stepping just behind him. She hated to do it, but he was right. He would be able to withstand poison a lot better than her and healed a lot faster. “And the other.”
“Some sort of lizard. Not even a threat,” he scoffed.
“Here they come.”
Kagome waited but nothing happened, until InuYasha reached behind and held her waist moving her with him as he turned to keep the attacking youkai in front of them.
“Shit, must not be any youki in his poison and it’s acidic like Sesshomaru’s. He’s spraying it through your barrier and melting your sutra,” InuYasha said. “Fuck I lost sight of the lizard. Don’t let your guard down.”
It wasn’t long before all of Kagome’s sutra had been destroyed and her barrier protecting the shrine fell. The snake youkai approached with a feral grin. He crossed one arm over his waist and bowed. “If it isn’t the long lost Prince of the Dogs and his little Miko bitch.”
“What the fuck do you want?” InuYasha snarled.
“Why the Shikon no Tama of course?” he replied. His eyes wandered just over InuYasha’s shoulder. “Careful Kakeochi, I’ve heard the bitch has bite.”
InuYasha spun just as Kagome gasped. He only just make out the edges of something or someone holding her by the neck, her toes only just touching the ground. Her lips moved as she tried to say something but he couldn’t make it out. He stopped blocking her and her voice was barely a whisper in his head since she was so close to passing out.
Powers, can’t feel him. Love you. Behind You! Inu…
The moment he lost connection to her a rage as strong as any he had ever known welled up inside him. He spun, decapitating the snake youkai about to attack his back without a second thought and turned on the dead lizard youkai now holding Kagome over his shoulder.
“Put her down, now.”
“I think not,” Kakeochi said with a sneer. “You won’t dare strike me while I have your mate and risk injuring her.”
InuYasha’s laugh was dark and rough and a part of him was certain that if he looked in a mirror he would see stripes on his cheeks and red bleeding into this eyes. He needed to finish this before he lost control completely. His youkai roared for him to hurry and reminded him that he could never hurt his mate.
He dragged his claws down his arm and threw out his hand. His blades of blood flew at the lizard youkai cutting tearing into every inch of him that wasn’t blocked by Kagome’s body. The youkai screamed in agony as he died, Kagome falling from his arms, untouched.
InuYasha sprang forwards and lifted Kagome into his arms. Panic threatened to consume him as he realized that while her heart was still beating, she had ceased to draw breath. He tried to remember what Kagome had told them all to do in a situation like this. He laid her flat on the ground and tilted her head back slightly. Then he pressed his mouth over hers and blew gently.
He swore as it came out of her nose. He’d forgotten that part. This time he pinched her nose as be blew gently into her mouth, once, then again. As he went to blow a third time she drew in a long sucking breath and started coughing. He gathered her against him holding her as she shuddered.
“You’re alright. You’re alright,” he said over and over, stroking her hair.
As she came to awareness, and heard him, she wondered if he wasn’t saying it more to convince himself. “I’m alright,” she rasped, trying to soothe him.
“Fuck, I’m sorry, Kagome,” he said, his voice pleading. “I underestimated them, It won’t happen again.”
It sounded like a vow. “It wasn’t your fault,” she insisted. “And I’m okay. You saved me.”
“Damn it,” I almost let you get killed,” he growled. “You weren’t breathing. If you hadn’t made us learn that stupid RCP thing I wouldn’t have known how to save you.”
She smiled at his mistake.
InuYasha gaped at her. “You think this is fucking funny? You could have died!”
And then she felt it, him, the depth of his anguish and tears filled her eyes. He had really been afraid that she was going to die. A feeling she herself knew all too well. She cradled his face in her hands and leaned up to kiss him.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “It was stupid. You said RCP instead of CPR that’s all. I’m sorry.”
He shook his head. “Don’t be. Just don’t fucking scare me like that again.”
“Never,” she promised.
Kagome woke alone, but before the first twinge of sadness could take hold a familiar warmth filled her, and though it didn’t make sense, she would have said her heart heard InuYasha telling her not to worry and to come down for dinner.
