Strike by Night

Chapter 1: First Encounter

Kagome and Sesshoumaru are professional assassins contracted to kill the same person. However, upon arrival, they found the target already dead. In revenge, both vow to find and kill the one who slew their target, forcing 2 opposite personalities to work together. Will romance bloom or will they kill each other before then? Rating due to go up.

Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha. Never have, and most likely never will. So, no sue. But damn, I'd like to own Sesshoumaru.

Da-da-da-dum! Da-da-da-dum! The cell phone managed to chirp out the opening tunes of Beethoven's Fifth before a slender hand fumbled for the location of the disruptive sound, nearly smashing it in the process. Finding it, still undamaged, the hand raised the cell to a sleepy disheveled head that reluctantly emerged from the snug confines of the covers.

"Hello?" the figure said, equally sleepily.

"Higurashi? I've got a job for you," a humorless voice on the phone replied. Hearing this, the sleepy figure immediately sobered up. A quick glance at the bedside clock told her it was 4:15 a.m. Rsisting the urge to groan at being woken up at this ungodly hour when any living thing with half a mind would be asleep, she sat up in bed and listened intently. Her employer obviously had no sense of timing, a girl needed her beauty sleep, but a job was a job, and she desperately needed one right now. "I'm listening," she spoke into the receiver, giving it her undivided attention.

"Good. Your target is Naraku Shinigami.

Naraku Shinigami, now why does the name seem so familiar, Kagome thought. Suddenly it clicked. "Isn't Naraku Shinigami one of the owner of Four Gods Industries?" she asked into the receiver. "The Byakko Branch, right?"

"Very good, Higurashi, I would have expected nothing less from you," the humorless voice praised. "One and the same. The job is to be done by the seventh and the pay is $15 million. I trust you'll find the amount satisfactory. Detailed information is delivered to your mailing address and payment is transferred upon completion. Am I clear?"

"Crystal," confirmed Kagome, having been through this many times. Kagome could feel the nod of approval over the phone lines before the voice hung up. "Thank god for this job, thought Kagome. Revenge business just isn't what it used to be anymore. If this hadn't come I would've been forced to get an actual job if she wanted to keep staying at where she was. Grimacing at the thought, Kagome looked over her king size canopy bed around her spacious bedroom, which was only one of many similar sized rooms in her suite at one of the most prestigious penthouses in Japan. Deeming all was fine, she returned the cell to its proper place on her nightstand and herself into her proper place: between the covers of her magnificent bed, with every intention to sleep until the time rolled around when sane people should be awake.

Name: Kagome Higurashi.

Age: 22

Occupation: assassin

Rank: 3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Elsewhere: at the Fukaimori Mansion~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Riiiiiing. Riiiiii-" An elegant hand picked up the receiver, abruptly cutting the sound off at the second ring. "Fukaimori residence," a deep voice spoke indifferently into the receiver.
"Sesshoumaru?" a dry voice in the phone inquired, making sure it had the right brother.
"Speaking," replied Sesshoumaru. He had just come back from an assignment, a leader of some country whom other leaders had wanted dead. The task had been pathetically easy; he even had to kill the man up close and personal just to find some sort of excitement. The man had begged like a worm before he died. Sesshoumaru smiled at the memory, but the smile quickly faded. Leaders just weren't what they used to be anymore. Sesshoumaru thought. It's amazing that the world is still standing with the leadership it had. Nevertheless, the man, no slash that, worm's death would certainly be on the international news tomorrow.
"I have an assignment for you, think you'd be interested?" the voice asked.
"That depends," Sesshoumaru replied coolly. He'd had enough with easy targets. His blood cried out for the thrill of a challenge and unless this one promised at least some excitement, his bed looked much more enticing alternative than listening to this man drone on about something that even his half-wit brother can take care of. It had been a long night.
"But I believe you will find this one to your interest," the voice assured. "The target is Naraku Shinigami."
"Owner of Byakko branch of Four Gods Industries?" questioned Sesshoumaru, his interest piqued. It was common knowledge that while Naraku only owned one-fourth of Four Gods Industries, one of the most influential industries around, he wielded power over the other three parts with an iron fist. Not only that, but his romantic affairs had turned up in the tabloids countless times. Ruthless and a womanizer, this promised to be at least interesting.
"Same one," confirmed the voice. "The deadline is the seventh, and the pay is $15 million."
"Fine, I'll take it," replied Sesshoumaru curtly. Not that he needed the money since he had just completed a job for 10 million, but this was going to be the challenge he was looking for. Not waiting for a reply, Sesshoumaru, hung up. After a quick shower, he climbed in bed hoping to get at least a few hours sleep before his idiot of a brother woke up and created enough noise wake half the country.
Name: Sesshoumaru Fukaimori
Age: 30
Occupation: assassin
Rank: 1
Sunlight streamed through the gaps of the drapes, bringing their light across the peacefully sleeping face of Kagome. She tossed, she turned, and finally, she surrendered to the glare, which seemed determined to wake her up. "Alright, alright, I'm up," she grumbled as she opened her chocolate eyes, swung her long legs over the edge and sat up. Running a hand through her hair she managed to get it into some order while a glance at the clock on the nightstand told her it was 10:30 a.m. Getting up, she headed to the connecting bathroom. Minutes later, she emerged, much more refreshed. After putting on a red almost sheer blouse and a pair of jean shorts, she pulled her ebony hair into a ponytail and grabbed her bag and keys, preparing to head to the post office for her mail. (A/N: come on, you think it'd be delivered to her house?)
Handing her car key to the valet, who quickly pulled up with her little silver jaguar, a beauty, but not too flashy. She took the driver's seat and started on her way. She loved that car. Bought with the money from her first successful assassination, seeing it each time always bought back memories for her, Kagome mused as she drove. Five years ago she had the ordinary teenage life, just graduated from high school and looking forward to college. If anyone told her then she'd become an assassin, she would've asked if they've been to a mental hospital. Left turn. And yet, here she was, all because of one night. One night when she was walking home and some guy tried to rape her. But instead of crying and waiting for the police reports, she got angry and tracked the bastard down herself. She ended his life with a single bullet through the head from her .22 magnum, using a pillow as silencer. Right turn. After that, she'd start getting phone calls for various jobs. It seemed she had witnesses that time, a mistake she never made again, but those witnesses had been impressed. She didn't really know why she took the assignments, but it seemed tracking and killing the rapist had unlocked something within her, something wild, a blood lust. Stop light. She took the jobs, and in five years, she went from unknown to the number three assassin in Japan.
Upon this Kagome frowned. She wasn't particularly proud of killing the rapist, sure the guy had it coming to him, already charged with five rapes, but it was still taking a human life. It wasn't how she was brought up. Which was why she never told her family, namely her mom and her little brother, Souta, about her job. All they knew, she was still in college, even though she never went. Occasionally she sent money back, claiming it was from her part time job. Never too much, though she wanted to give more.
Arriving at the bank, she walked out. Not too many heads turned her way, which was fine. In her line of work, you don't want to be noticed. Pretty was the best word to describe her, ebony hair that went to the middle of her back, warm chocolate colored eyes, small red mouth, and a shapely figure. But the best thing about her was the innocence she seemed to radiate. Who'd ever guess that this naïve, sheltered girl was actually an assassin? Going over to her P.O. box, she grabbed the large envelope from within and after a few other stops, drove home.
Flipping through the files from her position on the sofa of her living room, she read all the relevant information. Naraku Shinigami, Co-President of Four Gods Industries, CEO of Byakko Branch. Age 35 this year. Phone: 587-923-0102. Cell: 4562356754. Residence, currently in Maple Hotel, at Kyoto, room 813. Note: Shinigami is negotiating a deal with Soul Jewel Enterprises. He has been there for 2 months, but is due to return on the seventh. He is in and out of his hotel room, no specific times. The man is highly intelligent with violent tendencies and will not hesitate to kill. Approach with caution.
Don't worry, thought Kagome. She intended to be alive to enjoy her $15 million. Taking out the enclosed picture of Naraku, she studied the picture. Very nice, she thought. She's seen his picture pasted across tabloids and the news many times, but she had to admit, this picture got his good side. Pulling out her handy laptop, she ran a check on all the information she just read. The information she got was usually correct, but you can only trust it so far. The one thing she noticed was that he didn't have any bodyguards. Very few in such positions of power didn't have anyone to protect them. Those that didn't were either very confident of their own abilities or very stupid. This one was most likely the former; she'll have to be extra careful. Booking a seat on the next plane to Kyoto, she set about packing her bags before heading to the airport.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~At Fukaimori Mansion~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Crash! Clank! Splatter! And then the TV turned on at a inhuman volume, blasting sound through the entire mansion, where not even the dust in the darkest corners were spared from its effect. And unfortunately, neither was Sesshoumaru. Eyes snapping open, he growled as he got up and stomped downstairs to kill Inu Yasha for disrupting his rest. Finding him, situated in front of the large screen TV, with a bowl of ramen in his hand, unmindful of the intensity of noise coming from the speakers, Sesshoumaru charged, throwing Inu Yasha against the nearest wall.

"Hey, what's the fucking idea!" screamed Inu Yasha from his imprint in the once whole stone wall. Sesshoumaru didn't reply, merely turned the volume down on the TV, which were damaging his sensitive youkai ears. Pushing off from his imprint, Inu Yasha leaped at his brother. The two fought until their stomachs growled, telling them that they should've been down here for a different reason. Proclaiming an unspoken truce, Inu Yasha returned to his bowl of ramen, which surprisingly was not spilled when he was slammed against the wall and took the ear plugs out of his ears, and Sesshoumaru went to the kitchen for his breakfast. Yep, it was a normal morning in the Fukaimori household.

After breakfast, Sesshoumaru retired to his study, where it contained his computer, which had a T1 connection, to search for information on his newest target. He didn't trust the information the employers gave, preferring to do his own research. The information that came up was similar to Kagome's. Packing his bags, he booked the last seat on the next flight to Kyoto.

On the way out, he barked to Inu Yasha he would be out on assignment for the next few days, earning him a "Feh" from Inu Yasha, whose eyes never wavered from the TV, which was showing a concert by pop superstar Kikyo.(felt she should have a little happiness)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Airport~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~
"Flight 2386, departing for Kyoto Airport is now boarding."
Kagome sighed as she sank into her window seat on the plane. It would be a short flight, but she was going to enjoy it, she thought gazing out the window. She shifted her attention when she felt a presence beside her. Turning her head, she was greeted with the sight of a toned muscular chest, whose definitions were visible even through the immaculate shirt he wore. Looking down, she saw a pair of toned legs clad in a pair of tailored slacks. Damn, Kagome thought.
Seconds later, a face emerged to match the body. Intense golden eyes looked out from chiseled yet feminine features and silver hair flowed down his back, accentuating even more his feminine appeal. She could almost mistake him for a woman if it weren't for the fact that those piercing gold eyes weren't looking at her with the coldest air and arrogance that was undoubtedly male. She didn't break her eye contact until an eyebrow rose on the male's face, causing her to realize what exactly she was doing and turn away. She could feel the blush creeping up on her cheeks as he settled himself in the seat beside her. That was a stupid thing to do Kagome, very very stupid, Kagome chided herself.
Seeing the blush creep up on the girl sitting beside him, who was just moments ago giving him a once over, Sesshoumaru smirked. This case is definitely worth it, he thought, deciding to play with the girl further. "Did you see anything you like?" he asked calmly, looking at the girl out of the corner of his eye. When the words reached her, he could see her stiffen and the blush intensify from the force of her anger. She looked something very akin to a tomato about now.
"And just what is that suppose to mean?" she demanded, turning to face him.
"Simply the fact that you were checking me out moments ago," Sesshoumaru replied, turning his head to match the glare coming from the chocolate brown eyes of a now very pissed Kagome, a smug smile across his lips.
"No, it was rather disappointing. I've seen better," Kagome drawled refusing to be insulted by this arrogant jerk sitting beside her. Unfazed, Sesshoumaru's reply was to raise his eyebrow, showing he didn't quite believe her answer, causing Kagome's anger to grow and making her focus all her energy into preventing herself from jumping Sesshoumaru that instant and strangling the smug smile off his face. But she feared that would have drawn too much attention. So she settled for a verbal sparring. "Believe what you wish, but women find arrogance a major turn off, but by your attitude, it seems you haven't had much experience in the field." Kagome calmly shot back.
The effect was satisfying. Though the smug smile didn't fade, she saw his eyes narrow in anger. Allowing herself a smirk while inside, her mind was crowing over her victory. Their staredown was interrupted when the flight attendant asked them to buckle their seat belts for takeoff.
Tension was high and peace was relative between the two, but at least it was there until
the refreshments came. Kagome requested a ginger ale and Sesshoumaru requested a seltzer. The flight attendant asked Sesshoumaru to pass along Kagome's drink and fate would have it that the plane met a slight turbulence then. Making Sesshoumaru spill the contents of the cup, right onto Kagome's shirt, drenching the front. All would have been forgiven had Sesshoumaru's gaze not lingered longer than necessary at the front of Kagome's now very see through blouse. Covering herself for some attempts at modesty, Kagome jumped up to head for the bathroom. Grabbing her carry-on bag, she tried to maneuver between the seats to reach the aisle, but as she crossed Sesshoumaru's seat, she `accidentally', knocked Sesshoumaru's half full drink off the table in front of him, and right into his lap. He shot right up, giving Kagome enough room to cross. "Why thank you," she said sweetly as she walked across "How nice of you to stand up to let me cross." She didn't miss the glare that he shot her way and he didn't miss her smirk as she walked away.
Kagome cleaned her blouse the best she could in the bathroom and pulled a new shirt from her bag. (always prepared) She emerged from the bathroom to find Sesshoumaru waiting. She smirked, he glared icily and each went on their way. Sesshoumaru returned minutes later, he obviously also packed extra clothing. And the rest of the flight went uneventfully.
The plane landed in Kyoto and everyone got off. He was hot, mused Kagome as she walked out. But too bad he was such an asshole.
That was certainly the most interesting plane ride I've ever been on, Sesshoumaru thought. Not many would dare to do half of what she did to him. I do hope we will have the chance to meet again, little one.
A/N: Please read. Oohhhn, a cliffhanger, well almost
Anyway, details? I'm not Japanese and am too lazy to do research, so some things are just American, only set in Japan. I like Jags so I gave her a jag, but I don't know if they actually make a model like that. I really don't know much about cars. Actual information on the car I could be thinking about would be appreciated. And also since I'm not trigger happy, the gun was just something I heard about somewhere. Does it actually exist? Four Gods Industries is taken from Fushigi Yuugi, I just didn't want to do the usual Shikon Industries or whatnot. And the Maple Hotel is taken from Meteor Garden.
I try to keep the characters in character as much as possible, but these are different situations, so they're gonna act differently.
PLEASE REVIEW, I love reviews. Flame me if you want to, but this is my first fanfiction, for goodness sake. Ja.
