Chapter One

Back to the Future

"Kagome, wait! You can't go yet! We haven't found all of the Shikon no Tama jewel shards yet!"

"I'm going, whether you like it or not!"

Kagome Higurashi pedaled her bike as fast as possible in an attempt to outrun her hanyou comrade, InuYasha. The half demon, half human boy was hot on her wheels and closing in fast. Kagome looked back to see a blur of red fly past her and beat her to the Bone Eater's Well.

Darn it! she thought. Why is he so dang persistent?! He really needs to learn some tact. Gosh, he ticks me off! She skidded to a halt just in time to miss hitting InuYasha, who darted to the side to avoid getting hit in the gut.

"Watch where you're goin'!" he barked. "Why do ya wanna go back so bad? Don't you want to stay here and find the rest of the shards?" That wasn't the only reason InuYasha wanted Kagome to stay. But he'd never admit that he loved her enough that he'd use the power of the Shikon no Tama, or the Jewel of Four Souls, to become full human. With this thought, his mind brought up the image of Kikyo, the woman who was reincarnated in Kagome.

Fifty years ago, a young priestess named Kikyo, was the protector of the Jewel of Four Souls. Countless times, she had caught InuYasha trying to steal the Jewel in order to become full youkai. Once he was a complete demon, no one would be able to stand in his way. Every time Kikyo pinned InuYasha with her arrows, she wouldn't kill him. InuYasha demanded to know why she wouldn't just get it over with. She would just walk off, asking him to stop pursuing the Jewel. "I'd rather not waste more of my arrows," she would say, never looking the hanyou straight in the eye. Ever since, InuYasha would watch her from afar with his golden, youkai eyes. One nice, breezy afternoon, Kikyo called InuYasha to join her. Once together, she discussed her most deep issues with him. When he accused her of whining about her problems, she agreed with tears. Afterwards, he couldn't stop thinking about her. He was by her side, and she by his.

When he said that he'd use the Jewel to become human to be with Kikyo, another hanyou, named Naraku, heard of this event and attacked Kikyo while she was bringing the Jewel to InuYasha. Cleverly disguised as InuYasha, Kikyo was led to believe she was betrayed by her love. InuYasha fell into a similar trap. In the end, InuYasha went to the village to take the Jewel for himself. And after successfully obtaining it from the villagers, he was pinned to a tree with a sacred arrow shot by Kikyo, who was trying to recover from her injuries. Stunned by being betrayed yet again, InuYasha fell into a deep, eternal sleep. Kikyo dropped to her knees, picked up the Jewel, told her sister, Kaede, to burn the Jewel with Kikyo. Then, with a small whimper, she passed into the next life.

Then, fifty years after the couple's demise, a modern day fifteen-year-old girl, Kagome, was looking for her cat, Buyo, and was dragged by Mistress Centipede into the Bone Eater's Well located on her family's shrine. When she emerged from the well, she found that the landscape had changed dramatically. When she saw the Holy Tree, she ran thinking that she was home. When she came out of the brush, she found InuYasha pinned to it. During an attack by Mistress Centipede on the village, InuYasha was mysteriously revived. When Kagome reached the Holy Tree after being chased by Mistress Centipede into the forest of InuYasha, the Shikon no Tama was revealed as the gigantic bug ripped it from Kagome's body. The mammoth arthropod swallowed the Jewel, and squeezed Kagome and InuYasha into the Holy Tree. After a request from InuYasha, Kagome destroyed Kikyo's spell on InuYasha by pulling the enchanted arrow from his chest. Afterward, InuYasha destroyed the centipede, and then turned onto the humans surrounding him. Demanding that Kagome handed the Jewel over to him, InuYasha chased Kagome throughout the forest. With Kaede's prayer beads, Kagome was able to subdue the hanyou, and ended up teaming up with him.

Mentally shaking the memory of Kikyo, InuYasha focused on preventing Kagome from going back to the 20th century. He prepared to chop down a tree with his "Iron Rever Soul Stealer" attack, but while he turned his back, he heard the rustle of clothing and grass, and turned around just in time to see Kagome slip into the well.

Damn her! He clenched his fist, and launched into the air, dropping into the well.
