InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Suki and Tsukuyomaru: A Love Story ❯ First sight, first meeting ( Chapter 1 )

Pearlescent blue eyes widened as they looked upon the smiling human girl chasing butterflies through the open field and laughing gaily. She couldn't be much older than seventeen by his guess of things. It amazed him though that she was unclaimed, it was unusual for humans. Most human females were married off once they experienced the time of their first blood. This village hadn't been any different, but this girl was.
He watched her, his long silvery hair blowing in the wind behind him as it was held secured in a top knot by thick tight leather strapping. Her hair was the same black as all of the other humans, but instead of being a dull brown black, or the shiny blue black, hers was a mysterious black that when light hit the thick locks just right looked a deep cherry red. It made him want to go over and smell her hair to see if it smelled like the deep black cherries it looked to be colored with.
Her eyes, oh her eyes entranced him. She was a good distance away from him, but with his youkai sight it was as though she were playing next to him. Her eyes were so beautiful, a light hazel speckled with honey gold and spring green tones that livened the more she laughed and played with the butterfly. She looked so happy, so free, her golden honey skin glowing in the light of the late summer sun.
It was growing cooler outside and soon fall would be upon them, and then winter would come and her flying friends would leave her. He was saddened by that thought, this beautiful creature would be locked away indoors during the winter, he wouldn't be able to watch her then.
“Suki!” he heard a woman's voice call out and watched as the girl's lively multi toned eyes turned a deep nearly black brown and all the energy seemed to leave her. “Come Suki, it's time for dinner. Still playing like a child,” the woman chided and he thought that it must be the girl's mother.
Suki…beloved…a perfectly befitting name for one such as her. But why would her happiness leave her so swiftly at just the sound of her own mother's voice? Wanting, needing to know why her eyes had changed so vastly, so quickly he followed silently, taking to the trees and hiding in their girth as he watched the girl walk swiftly back to her home, her steps holding none of the same enthusiasm that they had when she had been playing after the butterfly.
The breeze blew strongly and for that he was grateful for it hid his movement in the trees and made no one question the shaking of the tall black oak when he leapt into its fullness and watched in through the unshuttered window of her house. He watched as she entered and seemed years older than she had in the meadow. She seemed almost ancient to him now, almost…defeated in a way.
“Mother, father,” he heard her nearly toneless voice greet and wondered if it would have sounded different had she chosen to speak to the flying insect she'd been chasing earlier.
“Suki, we've talked about this before. It's time for you to grow up,” her mother chided her making clear her dislike for her daughter's free spirited behavior.
“There are four men who will be visiting in the coming days my daughter,” her father spoke his voice making it clear that she was not to interrupt nor disagree to what he would say. “You will meet with each; the one who takes the greatest liking to you shall wed you upon the next moon.”
He watched as her eyes widened horrified and it was made clear to the youkai that what her father had said was a death sentence to her, or to her spirit at least, but wasn't that the same thing. Tsukuyomaru had always found it ridiculous the way many human fathers gave their daughter no choice in their own love life and saw a marriage as nothing more than a business dealing, something to further their holdings no matter what happened to their child. It disgusted and enraged him, especially with this beautiful creature, she should at least be allowed to choose her own mate, the one her heart desired.
“Father,” she breathed out as she shook her head in horror and rose from the low table near the fire pit.
“Suki sit down,” the bearded man commanded her without looking upon her, her own mother not showing any pity for her own daughter and it angered him even more.
“How can you…? I'm not some possession, you can't just trade me off to the one who fancies me the most!” she cried outraged. “What about what I want?”
“It is irrelevant,” the man answered. “A daughter is worth no more than her husband can bring into her family. At least had I had a son I would've gained some pride from his skill in battle.”
Her eyes widened further and a choked whimper pulled from her throat seconds before she fled the house into the darkening night. The man rose swiftly and made his way to the doorway, calling after her. He demanded she return, shouted to her that what she was doing would not be tolerated, that he would not be made a fool of. The girl was beyond listening to him or anyone else though and Tsukuyomaru lifted out of the tree and into the sky, flying silently upon his youki as he followed after her out of sight.
He found her moments later deep in the forest as she stood on her knees as her arms held onto the thick tree she was leaning against as she sobbed her heart breaking. It had been made clear to her then what she had always feared but always tried to deny - she meant nothing to her parents, they held no love or affection at all for her.
She gasped sharply and spun around, her wide tear filled eyes frightened when a twig snapped beneath his foot rather loudly in the deafening silence of the night around her. Her eyes searched the almost sightless darkness until they fell upon him, his snowy skin and silvery hair glowing in the darkness.
“W-who are you?” she asked as she bit her trembling lip between her teeth, her nostrils quivering with tears left to be cried.
“It is not my intention to frighten you,” he said softly, his deep voice like a smooth comforting caress as he stepped closer slowly. “I…I saw, I heard…” he trailed off slowly as he moved closer to her still until he was able to kneel next to her. “I just wanted to make sure you were alright.”
“You heard?” she asked her voice trembling and doing nothing to hide the tears on her face.
“Yes,” he said softly, his eyes sympathetic as they looked upon her and he brought one clawed hand up to gently wipe away her tears from her cheek. “Everything.”
“Why would he? How could they?” she couldn't form a full thought through her heartache, the intense feeling of helplessness making her feel so very cold as though all the warmth had left her body too swiftly for her to comprehend and she sat shivering on the leaf and grass covered ground.
Tsukuyomaru could no longer take the look of helplessness, fear, and intense sadness upon her face, the way her body shivered with the internal chill she felt that ran soul deep within her. He sighed softly as he drew her into his arms and held her against his chest, feeling her hot tears dampen the silk of his haori and his skin underneath as he held her and lifted her from the ground to sit in his lap as he tried to comfort her.
He stroked her hair slowly, rubbed her back in slow soothing circles as he kept her wrapped in his arms and so close to him that they felt as one. His head snapped to face the entrance of the forest from the village as he heard the angered voice of her father calling after her, though she didn't seem to be aware of it as she cried in his arms.
“Don't be afraid,” he whispered to her and lifted them swiftly into the ever so very high and thick branches of the towering tree above them. “Shh, I've got you,” he whispered to her comfortingly when she gasped and he held her and rocked her in his arms as he settled upon a thick branch.
“What's your name?” she asked as she looked up at him from where she had soaked his silk clothing with her tears.
“Tsukuyomaru,” he said to her softly and gave her a gentle smile as he tucked a lock of her deep cherry black hair behind her rounded ear and kissed her forehead softly.
“Tsukuyomaru,” she said repeating his name softly almost musingly. “I'm Suki,” she said softly and bit her lip as her eyes grew incredibly sad and somewhat frightened as she looked toward the ground. “I should probably go back,” she said her voice making it clear that she dreaded doing so.
Tsukuyomaru cupped her cheek softly in his hand and turned her face back to his, her eyes wide as she bit her bottom lip and looked into his cornflower blue eyes. He petted her hair in long gentle strokes and tucked her head beneath his chin as she pillowed her cheek against his chest.
“Let me keep you tonight Suki,” he begged her softly. “Let me hold you and watch over you as you sleep. I promise no harm will come to you, I promise I'll not take advantage of you. Just let me hold you. Even if it's only for one night, you should know what its like to feel cherished, protected…loved,” he added on in a whisper as he held her wrapped in his arms.
“You'll protect me?” she asked and he felt her jaw moved against his chest as she yawned widely.
“With my life,” he promised her and kissed her bowed head.
“You won't leave me, or disappear like a dream?” she asked her voice trembling with her emotion and exhaustion.
“No, I won't leave you,” he promised her in a whisper. Not ever, he promised silently.
“Ok,” she said tiredly and he felt her move her arms to wrap them around his waist and hold onto him as she shifted on the wide thick branch until she was in a comfortable position to sleep in.
He smiled softly when she moaned as he moved her, pulling her up his body as he moved to lie flat on the branch, pulling and moving her until she lay completely on top of him on her stomach, her cheek pillowed on his chest.
“Go to sleep sweet Suki,” he whispered to her. “I'll be here when you wake up.”
