Chapter 2

He had gotten the letter, just like the old man had said and promptly packed up and left, his father showing nothing but disappointment. He had gotten the lecture of his life after being arrested, his bank account temporarly frozen, and most of his electronics taken away. He didn't pack much due to the fact he had nothing to really pack. Just the books the court had given him and clothing to the suggestion of Mr. Higurashi, all in a single large suit case that sat next to him.

The drive over had been nothing short of spectacular. He couldn't help but notice how many beautiful Sakura blossoms there were covering the many trees, or how green and alive the other foliage seemed, or even how pure blue the sky was as he climbed higher on the road in his beaten up, 1975, convertible, Corvette Coupe. Eventually he descended from the mountain terrain, much to his dismay.

Dust flew behind him as he raced toward his destination, alone on the road. It seemed like he had driven for days until he saw the first glimpse of a house, and it was a broken down shack. Entering the small town, he slowed a little, not needing a speeding ticket from an officer to be his first introduction. Many decorated the road for such a small village, doors were wide open, and white fences seemed to stretch for as far as the eye could see. Shopkeepers in whit aprons swept the entrances, waving and chatting with people as they walked by. It was so small, how could anyone stand to live here? He pondered this question as he continued to drive, following the directions given to him by the court. Slowly the houses retreated, and once again he was in the more open space.

Small hills were randomly placed, yet it was still very flat. The colors were dark, rich, natural, not those dull colors they had back in the city. No, this was nature at its finest. The sky was so blue it was almost like looking into the ocean, and the grass so dark a green he almost wanted to eat it like the cows he'd seen coming. In some areas, the grass got taller and was overcome with never-ending fields of brilliant flowers. Every color of the rainbow could be seen, swaying gently as the wind caressed it, seeming to tickle the snow-capped, dark, mountains that reached to touch the sky.

He continued down this road of heaven until the terrain got a little rougher and he came upon a large wooden arch reading `Ramshackle Ranch'. Pulling out the paper, he looked at it for a moment. This was his stop apparently. He arched his brow at the name. Well, he would sleep well at night knowing that the roof might collapse at any second.

Driving in slowly, he came up to a fairly large sized white house, stopping next to an old, blue, pick-up truck. Next to the house, about 30 feet away, was a large, white, wooden barn. A few people bustled in and out of it, doing multiple tasks, some with horses. In front of it, a large group of horses were held in a round pin of more white. On the left side of the house, the side opposite of the barn, was a smaller building that had several tools around the side walls, and a small dirt driveway where he was now parked. Thrusting it into gear he stepped out of his car looking around impassively.

“So, this is were I'm gonna be for the next coupla weeks… Shit.” He muttered, throwing his cigarett to the ground. A boot stamped on it before a hand bent down to pick it up. Inuyasha looked over at the man, about his father's age in human years, through his dark glasses.

“I don't mind if ya smoke outside, but I don't want your trash litterin my ranch.” Inuyasha nodded taking the butt from him and muttering an apology. “It's alright, you city folk don't know our ways so you're gonna need learn, and quick. First off my name is Kisho Higurashi, and you must be....”

“Inuyasha, sir.” He supplied, shaking his extended hand.

“Inuyasha. Well, Myoga faxed us your info, seems you got into a little bit of trouble back in the city,” Inuyasha shrugged a little, crossing his arms over his black wife-beater. “Well, it's in the past now, can't change it. All you can do is serve your punishment and move on.” Inuyasha nodded, but remained silent. “Well, lets get you on up to your room.”

Inuyasha grabbed his bag, following him into the empty house. His gifted hearing could easily pick up the sound of food sizzling in a hot pan on the stovetop. It was a very modest house, nothing to gloat about. The stairs squeaked and cracked as they walked up them, making Inuyasha a little uncomfortable. When they reached the top he pointed past three doors on the left to one at the end of the dark hall. “Bathroom, right there, and this,” He opened a door just forward and a little to the right of them. “Is where you will be staying.” Inuyasha stepped in cautiously. The room was a light shade of brown with dark wooden floors, frames, and furniture. There were two beds parallel to each other against the far left wall. Both were neatly made up, though one, he could tell, belonged to someone else. “Space is limited `round here so you'll be staying here with my nephew, Miroku.” Inuyasha nodded, setting his stuff on the bed closest to the window.

“It's very nice, thank you.”

“You're quite welcome. Feel free to unpack, Miroku should be up in a few to change before we have dinner.” Inuyasha was about to turn and tell him it was only five but he had already gone. Inuyasha plopped down on the bed tiredly. Looking over at his suitcase he frowned, but decided to tackle the chore of unpacking now rather then later. Opening the bag, he opened the might chest that sat on the other side of the window and, upon finding a little bit of space, unpacked his clothes into it, leaving some of the electronics he had secretly taken back before he left in the bag, which he shoved under the bed.

“So, you're the new guy huh? The Big shot from the city.” Inuyasha looked up to see a young man leaning against the frame of the door.

“Yeah,” He grunted standing up. “Inuyasha.”

“Miroku.” The man grinned shaking his hand. “So, you're my new trainee slash roommate for the next three months huh? Mr. Higurashi told me that I'll be in charge of helping you for the first couple of weeks.”

“To do what?” Inuyasha asked confused.

“Just the jobs we do around the ranch. They can be difficult for newcomers. By the way, we got assigned fence duty so tomorrow we need to get up around five to load the truck with the good wood we got and check the fences.” Closing the door near the beginning, Miroku stripped off his shirt, throwing it in a nearby laundry basket and replacing it with a new one.

“Five in the morning?” He groaned. “Wonderful.”

“Yeah, you'll get used to it. I'll explain it to you tomorrow, it's a pretty easy job. I'm going to go wash up real quick and I'll meet you down stairs for dinner.” That was all the young man said before he left, Inuyasha still wondering if he would ever get used to the time in which things seemed to move around here.
