Chapter #2 - A Sweet Treat
Kagome landed at the bottom of the well with a small thud. "KAGOME, you're back!" She looked up to see an excited Shippo peering down at her from the world above. She smiled as she hoisted the back-pack over her shoulders and grabbed at a vine to help pull her self out of the well. When she reached the top, she came face to face with an annoyed InuYasha. He grabbed onto her arms and lifted her up out of the darkness. She set her bags down on the grass and took in a big breath of fresh air. It was cleaner and more wholesome here than in her time. All the air pollution and noise was one thing she never missed when she was back in the Sengoku Jidai. As she stretched her arms out above her head, she was aware of an inpatient growl on the rise. Kagome looked at InuYasha, knowing what was coming, and smiled.
"What took so long this time Kagome? Another of those stupid test things?" The Hanyou questioned her.
"InuYasha's right Kagome, you did take longer than you usually do" InuYasha looked a little stunned that the Kitsune had just agreed with him. Kagome sighed,
"Sorry..."
"That's it? Sorry?" InuYasha scoffed.
"I was going to say..." Kagome sounded a little annoyed at being cut off. "Sorry... I stopped at the store on my way back to get some treats." Shippo's eyes lit up at the mention of treats and danced around Kagome's feet, wondering what she had brought for him. Kagome didn't miss the same bright-eyed effect wash over InuYasha's face, all anger forgotten for the moment. InuYasha quickly replaced the look of excitement with a scowl before muttering a "Keh". Kagome just shook her head as she walked off towards the village. As Shippo bounced off after her, InuYasha realized that she had left her bag behind for him to carry.
"Damn Kagome, I'm just gonna leave it here! See how she likes that,” He said to no one with a smirk. As he turned to follow after them, he hesitated. "Beaten by a girl and her stupid bag" He growled loudly as he turned, picked up the back-pack, and took off at a run to catch up to the others.
Back at the hut, Kaede was putting some water on the boil when Kagome and Shippo came in.
"How are ye Kagome?" Kaede asked as she sat down.
"Hello Kaede, just fine. How about you?"
"Very well child" She replied.
"Kagome's brought you a gift Kaede" Shippo said with excitement, wondering what it could be. "That wasn't necessary" Kaede stated. Kagome shrugged off the old miko's humble demeanor, and handed her the small wrapped bag she had brought with her. As Kaede was carefully unwrapping her gift, InuYasha huffed into the hut, dropping Kagome's back-pack beside her none to kindly.
"What do you think I am Kagome, your slave?" He yelled at her.
"Oh..." She looked shocked "...I hope the ramen is all right after such a rough throw" InuYasha had missed the hint of sarcasm in her voice, as he looked at her bag with worry on his face. Kagome rolled her eyes before turning back to Kaede, who had opened the package to reveal small packets of various tea flavors. The miko thanked her for the gift, and promised to try one as soon as the water was ready.
Miroku and Sango appeared just in time to try some of the tea Kaede had made. After every one was finished and had complimented the unique taste, Shippo reminded Kagome that she had brought treats for them all.
"Here you are Miroku, and Sango..." She'd also given Sango the can of catnip that she had bought for Kirara. She mewed with excitement when she realized it was for her.
"Thank you very much Kagome", Sango smiled at her friend
"Yes indeed" Miroku thanked her also.
"You're welcome" Kagome smiled back at them. 'Now if only InuYasha would say thank you for once' She sighed to herself before handing InuYasha his chips.
"Keh" He replied.
'Guess not' She had to accept that "Keh" was probably the closest thing to a thank you she was ever going to get.
"Me next?"
"Yes Shippo" She laughed as she handed him a sugar stix.
"Stupid kit! As if there's anyone else left to give something to,” InuYasha growled.
"InuYasha!" Kagome scolded.
As everyone sat munching on their treats, Kagome noticed that Shippo hadn't opened his yet.
"What's wrong Shippo?" She asked him.
"Um, what is it?" He looked up at her holding the sugar stix in the air. She giggled before pulling out a stix to demonstrate with.
"You pinch the tip of the wrapper like this..." She watched as Shippo did the same with his stix. "Ya, then what?" He asked eagerly.
"Then you rip it off and pour the sugar in your mouth like this" She tilted the small paper tube so that the sugar slid onto her tongue. Shippo followed suit and seemed to enjoy the sugary treat. Wanting to prove that he could conquer the trivial snack all on his own, he asked her for another one.
"Sorry Shippo," She said, "These are pure sugar, and I don't want you ruining your dinner." Shippo crossed his arms and huffed.
"HA! Serves you right Shippo" InuYasha spat.
"At least I know how to ask nicely InuYasha!" Shippo spat back.
"Grrrr" WHACKKK!
"SIT boy!"
The day had come to an end, and everyone was settling in for the night. As he took his place against the wall, InuYasha noticed that Shippo was acting a little weird. He thought nothing of it and closed his eyes. Shippo however, was far from closing his eyes. He hadn't understood why Kagome didn't allow him another one of those sugar stix things. How much harm could such a little amount of candy do? He was angrier about the smug comment he had gotten from InuYasha when she had denied his request. He eventually gave up trying to understand and decided to get some sleep.
Unfortunately, memories of the sweet treat Kagome had given him, found Shippo before sleep did.
'I have to have another one!' He had devised a little plan to get another stix. 'I'll wait a bit longer until everyone has fallen asleep, then I'll sneak over to Kagome's bag and... ' Shippo hadn't noticed that he had started to crawl towards Kagome's sleeping figure as he thought about his little scheme, alerting the watchful eyes of InuYasha. He eyed Shippo strangely, wondering what the kit could be up to. Shippo looked like he was arguing with himself about something, and then as if out of nowhere... a mischievous little smirk tugged at the corner of the kits mouth. He crept a little closer, when he heard a low warning growl from InuYasha. Shippo stopped and looked at him through the darkness.
"Inu...InuYasha?" Shippo said with a tiny shiver.
"I don't know what you're up to Shippo, but you can forget about it. Go back to bed... NOW!" InuYasha had growled again making it perfectly clear to Shippo that now meant now! Shippo went back to his mat, shaking a little from the aggressive tone InuYasha had used.
At some point in the night he had needed to go to the washroom, but was worried about InuYasha catching him up, so he stayed put. Shippo couldn't take it anymore. He slowly crept out of the hut without a sound. When he came back in, he was closer to Kagome then he had been before. Shippo thought for a moment whether or not he should try again to work his plan. He looked towards InuYasha to see if he truly was asleep and noticed that he too, was a lot closer from this side of the hut. Shippo swallowed hard as he started creeping along the floor to Kagome's bag. He was getting closer, not once daring to take an eye off of InuYasha. He was almost at the bag, when he stubbed his toe on a loose board. A tiny squeak escaped his mouth seeming to echo in the dead quiet that filled the hut. Shippo froze when InuYasha started to stir in his sleep. His heart was beating so fast at the thought that he had woken the hanyou up.
'All this over some candy?' Shippo thought, but quickly forgot when he remembered just how yummy that candy was. When InuYasha started to snore softly, the young kit released a breath he'd been holding. He had reached Kagome's bag and was quietly opening the zipper. He reached in, grabbed the sugary treasure, and re-zipped the bag. He stuffed the large handful of sugar stix into his pockets and snuck back to bed. Shippo had tasted victory. It was sweet, like candy... and he liked it!
