Inuyasha jumped to his feet when he felt his board move forward with the wave. He rode it for a while, just enjoying the feel of gliding over the water before proceeding to cut back. He jerked to the right hard and spun in the air with his board. His ears twitched when he heard the sound of applause from the beach when he landed, but he ignored it. Leaning forward, he gained speed and cut of a tourist that was trying to ride his wave. He smirked when he heard them yelp as they were washed over by the wave.
He closed his eyes and spread out his arms and enjoyed the feel the warm salt air blow over his body and through his short white hair as he just carved through the wave. He could hear the flap of his board shorts as they blew in the wind. He opened his eyes when he felt the wave flat out. Letting out a sigh, he lied back down on his board and paddled towards his friend who awaited him.
Miroku grinned at him and gave his a thumbs-up as he approached, “Beautiful as ever, Inuyasha.” He wore a black wet suit with a dark blue O’Neil flower on the chest. He brushed his bangs out of his face and laughed, “Your skills seem to still amaze me, old friend.”
“Come on; let’s head back to the beach. I’m starving.” Inuyasha glanced out at the ocean; the sun was about to touch the edge of the ocean and the whole sky was a light with a dark pink. He smiled slightly at how something as simple as a sun set could still be so breathtaking. “I heard there will be a great swell tomorrow. We’ll come early before all the yuppie tourists come.”
“Sound like a plan.” Miroku turned his head suddenly and squinted out into the ocean. Letting out a sigh, he said, “It looks like we have a drifter…” Inuyasha looked to where his friend was pointing and sure enough, there was someone clinging to their body board as drifted farther and farther away from Kekaha beach.
“I’ll get this one. Just go on a head and start up Woodie.” Miroku nodded and began to paddle towards shore. Inuyasha watched him go before turning his long board to assist the drifter. As he approached, he could see that it was a girl. She had his back to him. She had long black hair and was wearing a red bikini with white dots. “You need a hand?” He yelled to her.
“Yeah,” she replied in a tired breath and he sat up when he got next to her. He sat up and guided his board in front of her and reached out his hand. She looked up at his with big blue grey eyes with a look of relief on her face. But that look relief turned into a look of anger. “You,” snapped angrily.
“Me?” Inuyasha asked innocently with a confused look on his face. What could he have done to piss of this soaked beauty?
“Yes, you! You cut me off earlier! It’s your fault I’m out here!” She huffed.
He sat there staring at her before he remembered the tourist that he snaked in on earlier. He laughed, “Sorry about that, girl. I got a little carried away. Didn’t want the last wave of the day ruined.”
She shot his a glare before snapping, “Well you ruined mine, you jerk.”
“Why were you body boarding on the west side? You suppose to be on the other side of the reef. This is surfer territory.”
“Really?”
“Yeah… Come on, the sun is almost down. I’ll take you back to shore as payment, okay?” Reaching out his clawed hand, he waited for the soaked beauty to grab it. She glared at for a while before taking it. He got into the water and she climbed onto his board.
“My board!” She gasped when she realized that she didn’t have her body board anymore. He looked around and saw it drifting away into the white current.
He sighed, “Forget it. It will be easier to take you back without it.”
“But—“
“I can get you a better one. Now lay down so I can paddle.” She grumbled, but did as she was told. He got up on the board and lied on top of her. He paddled deeply towards the shore and she blushed deeply.
“Wha-what are you doing?” She asked.
“I’m taking you back, girl.”
“But—“
No griping. It’s easier this way, girl, so help paddle.” She sighed and put her arms into the water to help her rude hero paddle back to shore. He smirked when he felt her move nervously under him. She fit with him perfectly.
“By the way, my name is Higurashi Kagome.” She told him. She wanted to distract herself from the fact that there was a stranger lying on top of her.
“You from Japan?” He asked her. “I used to live there.”
“Yeah. I’m from Tokyo. I’m here with my family and one of my friends on vacation. It’s my first time ever out of the country… How long have you lived here?”
He was silent for a while before replying, “14 years. I moved here when I was 5.”
“Oh.”
They paddled silently for a while before he broke the silence, “Inuyasha.”
“Huh?” She asked. She didn’t catch what he said.
“My name is Kobayashi Inuyasha.” She looked over her shoulder at him and he smiled down at her. She gasped when she noticed his eyes.
“What?”
“You’re eyes…” she whispered.
“What about them?” He snapped.
“They’re so pretty!” She gushed. A small blush tinged his cheeks and he looked away. “Are they gold?”
“No, they’re like an amber or topaz but at night they look gold.” He answered her softly. He looked towards shore to see Miroku leaning against Woodie. “We’re almost to shore.”
They jumped into the water as soon as they could touch the ocean bottom. Inuyasha tucked his over sized board under his arm and walked up onto the beach. Miroku went up to Kagome and wrapped a towel around her. “Well, if I knew that the drifter was such a beauty, I would have gone myself. Are you okay, pretty lady? You were out pretty far.”
Kagome nodded and wrapped the towel around her and shivered. Inuyasha finished strapping his board on top of Woodie. “Where’s my towel, Miroku?”
Miroku smiled sheepishly before replying “Sorry, my friend. The girl was cold.”
Inuyasha sighed and got on all fours and shook himself dry. Running a clawed hand through his white and unruly hair, he looked towards Kagome who had a surprised look on his face. “What?”
“Are you a youkai?” She asked in a surprised voice.
Inuyasha lowered his ears and replied, “I’m a hanyou…”
She walked up to him and to his surprise, reached up and stroked one of his ears. “They’re so soft…”
He blushed and jerked his head away. She blushed as well and bowed in apology, “Sorry! That was rude of me.”
“Feh, its fine. You were just curious.” He turned and walked towards his station wagon and pulled out a shirt and pulled it on. He looked towards her and asked, “You have somewhere your suppose to be?”
She gasped and looked around franticly, “I was supposed to be back before sunset! My family is going to kill me!”
“Where are you staying?” Inuyasha asked her.
She looked at him before replying, “In a cabin at Kekaha Beach Park.” She glanced at his car before asking, “Can you give me a ride?”
“Sure.” He opened the passenger door for her and she got it. He turned to Miroku and said to him, “Sit in the back.”
Starting up the Woodie, Inuyasha drove down the beach a ways and pulled out onto highway 50. They drove for a while until they came to the park entrance. Kagome gave Inuyasha directions to her cabin. When they pulled up, there was a cop car in front of it. Kagome opened the car door and jogged to the front porch. A girl around Kagome’s age with long brown hair came rushing out and hugged the girl, “I’ve been so worried about you!” She wailed. Kagome patted her back and assured her she was fine.
Her whole family surrounded her and bombarded her with questions. Inuyasha got out of the car and explained that she was drifting out into sea and he saved her.
A woman with short black hair walked up to him and bowed slightly, “Thank you for taking care of my daughter. I am grateful.”
Inuyasha blushed and replied nervously, “No problem.”
Inuyasha jumped when he heard a voice say, “Didn’t I ground you from surfing this week?”
He winced when he saw that the cop that was on the porch was his dad. His amber eyes narrowed when he asked, “Why were you out surfing?”
Inuyasha scratched the back of his neck and gave his dad a nervous smile, “Well, uhh… You see—“
“Sorry sir! I asked begged him to come,” Miroku cut in. “The current was perfect today on the west shore and I needed the Woodie. It’s supposed to be great tomorrow too. Could you please let me borrow him again tomorrow?”
Inuyasha’s father sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed, “You two…”
He looked up at the boys who were both giving him puppy-dog pouts. He threw his arms in the air and yelled, “I give up! You can go.”
They both jumped with glee and turned to walk to the Woodie before a voice called out, “Inuyasha!”
“Inuyasha turned to see Kagome walking towards him. She pointed in his face and said, “You owe me a new board, remember?”
He stared at her in thought before replying, “I have a better idea. Why don’t I teach you how to surf? You can bring your friend along as well. I’ll buy you a real board when you’re done."
Kagome smile brightly at him and grabbed his hand and shook it, “You have a deal.”
“Alright. We’ll pick you up at four,” He told her before turning to leave.
“In the afternoon, right?” Kagome’s friend asked.
“Miroku gave them a malicious grin and said, “Four in the morning, love.” He laughed at the expressions on the girls faces before hopping in Woodie. This was going to be fun.
????????????????????????????????????
The girls sat on the steps to the cabin with tired looks on their face. Kagome glanced at her cell phone; it was 4:15 a.m.
Her little brother, Souta, was hopping around gleefully asking questions about the mysterious beach bums that were going to take them surfing. Finally she had enough and yelled at him to go to bed. He stuck out his tongue before entering back into the cabin.
“Sango, they said 4o’clock, right?” Kagome asked her. Sango nodded her tired head in response. “Where are they?” She grumbled to herself. And as if right on cue, a station wagon came rushing around the corner playing some load American music. They stopped in front of the cabin, and Inuyasha hopped out and jogged up to them. Kagome wanted to throw a shoe at him; he was way too cheerful at this ungodly hour.
“Come on! We went around the beach for a while and found the perfect spot!” He picked up their stuff and threw them in the back. They got up sluggishly and went into the crammed into the back seat.
Miroku turned around in his seat and reached out his hand towards Sango and said with a grin, “Yo, I’m Miroku, and who might you be, love? I didn’t catch your name last night?”
Sango blushed slightly and shook his hand, “I’m Watsuki Sango…”
Inuyasha slammed the door when he enter and grinned at them through the rearview mirror. “You guys are in for a treat,” He laughed as he put the car in gear and sped off and out of the park.
Kagome and Sango glance at each other nervously. What had they gotten themselves into?
They were out in the water until the sun was way up into the morning sky. Inuyasha and Miroku didn’t go out into the surf like they had hoped but kept in the shallows and taught them how to stand on the board, paddle, and ride a wave. Tourist began to get in the way at times. Sango kept on falling until Miroku realized that she was goofy footed like Inuyasha and not natural. After that, Sango learned very fast. Kagome was a quick learner as well and had great balance. She actually rode her first wave first try, but it was just beginners luck. After hours of nonstop teaching, the boys thought they were finally ready. So packing up the Woodie again, they left the calm waves of the east beach and drove west.
Oh My God! Inuyasha! Sango! I’m doing it! I’m actually doing it!” Kagome squealed excitedly from her board. She stood shakily on the board as she rode on top of the small wave. Inuyasha chuckled at her excitement. Inuyasha had gotten her a green short board with large pink hibiscus flowers on it. Sango’s was a black short board with green dolphins.
She paddled towards the group with a huge grin on her face. “I didn’t fall,” She said proudly. Inuyasha and Miroku were impressed with the girl’s progress; they were pretty good for beginners.
Inuyasha felt his hackles rise and he looked out toward the ocean and grinned. “Miroku, I’m sensing a perfect wave,” He said happily.
Miroku looked out toward the ocean and smiled as well, “I believe you are right, my friend. Sorry girls, you going to have to sit out for a while. It’s our turn to shine.”
They watched the boys paddle away from them. Inuyasha and Miroku duck dived under a small wave and continued to paddle farther out. “This one is going to have a barrel,” Inuyasha told him. Miroku nodded and laughed excitedly. He could tell this was going to be a great wave.
There she was, creeping out of the water like a beautiful monster. Inuyasha and Miroku turned their boards and waited for the perfect to meet them. As soon as the wave began to move them forward, they popped up at the same time and began to carve the wave around each other. Shifting their weight to the back of their boards and slowed down slightly and waited for the barrel to enclose them.
Kagome and Sango gasped. It was in its own way beautiful the way they surfed. They worked with each other perfectly. They held their breath when they saw them go into the tunnel.
Miroku looked over at his friend. He had his eyes closed and had a hand out and was touching the barrel as he hung ten. Inuyasha didn’t need to do anything. They water was his guide and he was the most amazing surfer Miroku had ever seen. Ever sense they were little, he had never seen him fall. It was like the ocean loved him. They exited the barrel and began to carve around each other again. Miroku leaned his weight forward and jerked his board of the wave and got some air. Inuyasha did the same. Suddenly though, a surfer snaked in front of Miroku and cut him off. He fell off his board and the wave closed-out on him.
Miroku pumped his arms franticly as he tried to get air. As soon as he got a breath though, he was pulled under again as a swell trapped him and pushed his all over the place. He shut his eyes and held onto his breath as long as he could but he was running out of air. He opened his eyes slightly and saw Inuyasha duck under with his board and grab him by the scruff of his suit. Inuyasha pulled him onto his board as they broke air and Miroku clutched it as he began to cough; he had swallowed some water.
“Thanks,” He gasped.
“No problem,” Inuyasha said with a tired breath. Looking up, he glared at the surfer who had nearly killed his friend. “Get the fuck out of here, wolf!” He yelled.
Miroku looked over and saw a surfer with his long black hair in a pony tail and sharp blue eyes. It was Koga with his two followers with the bad hair dews, Ginta and Hakaku. They were the surf Nazis of Kekaha beach. Koga grinned at them, “Well what do we have here? I’m sorry you guys, I didn’t see you guys.” Ginta and Hakaku snickered.
“Get the fuck out of here, Koga! You almost killed him,” Inuyasha growled. He held up one of his clawed hands and flexed it for emphasis. “Don’t make me force you.”
“You should have kept your human out of my way, Inukoro. This is no place for the likes of you,” Koga laughed.
“Inuyasha! Miroku! Are you guys all right?!” Yelled a familiar voice. They all turned to see Kagome and Sango paddling towards them.
Koga paddled towards them and explained, “I’m sorry to worry you ladies. They appeared out of nowhere.”
Before Inuyasha could yell at him, he heard a slap and a very pissed Kagome was waggling her finger in his face and she yelled, “You liar! You cut in front of them, you jerk! How dare you lie to my face?!”
Koga reached up and touched his reddened cheek and a look of shock became a look of anger, “Girl! How dare you strike me! I am the leader of the Da Hui! You bitch! You should hold your tongue!”
“NO! You should hold your tongue! Now get the hell out of here before you really piss me off!” Everyone looked at Kagome in shock. Inuyasha reminded himself never to piss her off again. Koga shot them all a glare before he and the others paddled off. Kagome blushed when she realized everyone was staring at her, “He could have killed him. He needed to learn a lesson.”
The awkward silence was broken by Miroku’s hysterical laughter. Everyone followed suit.
Miroku’s board had snapped in half, so Kagome let him borrow her board. He got a lot of remarks from others about having a gay board but he just ignored them and just surfed.
Kagome sat in front of Inuyasha nervously on his long board. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Inuyasha with an unreadable expression on his face as he stared out into the ocean. She found herself staring at him; he was so handsome. He was tanned skinned and had a strong jaw, yet his face was gentle. His white doggy ears twitched occasionally but most of the time they were alert and forward. His amber eyes were full of joy and mirth as they stared out at the ocean. Suddenly, he stopped staring at the ocean and looked at her with an annoyed face. “What?” He asked.
She turned away red face and stared at the board. “Nothing,” She replied nervously. As she looked at the cream white board, something caught her attention. On the top of the board going along the edge on the right side was black characters that said, “Tetsusaiga.” She pointed to it and asked, “What is that?”
He looked over her shoulder to see what she was staring at. “That’s my board’s name.”
“Oh, why does it have a name?”
He scooted up closer behind and whispered in her it, “Because it wanted a name.”She blushed slightly and gave a nervous laugh. “That wasn’t a joke. This board is older that I am. It was created by the great board maker, Totosai. It has a mind of its own and tells me how to ride a wave. It used to be my fathers. He gave it to me when I rode my first wave,” He whispered to her. He had a hint of admiration in his voice.
She looked at the board with a whole new respect. “Wow,” Was all she could say. They both looked out at the other surfers before she asked him, “Can you show me?”
“Show you what?”
“How your great board works.”
He looked at her awkwardly before say, “I can give you a ride but that basically it.”
She smiled at him excitedly and they leaned forward and began to paddle out to the waves. Suddenly something struck her, “Why didn’t we paddle like this yesterday?”
He looked like a dear stuck in the head lights before saying nervously, “It was faster that way…” It sounded more like a question then an answer.
“Better have been.” The paddled out for a while and waited. Inuyasha explained to her that he was waiting for a perfect wave that was worthy enough for the Tetsusaiga. Finally after a few minutes of waiting Inuyasha paddled out some and waited till the wave moved them forward. They jumped to their feet and Inuyasha held her by the waist.
“Just relax and let the board lead you,” He said to her. They began to carve up and down the face of the wave with ease. Kagome began to laugh and she spread out her arms; it felt like she was flying. She didn’t need to do anything. Inuyasha let her go put some pressure on the back of the board and did a floater on the curl of the wave. Jerking hard, he did a small aerial. He didn’t want to do something to extreme to scare her. But to his surprise, she just laughed.
Inuyasha scooted to the back of the board and let Kagome take center to test something. Sure enough, she took control of the Tetsusaiga and began to carve the wave. She could hear Tetsusaiga…
The wave flat out, and they joined back with Miroku and Sango. Miroku had a look of shock on his face; he had never seen anyone but Inuyasha or his father control the board.
They spent the day surfing and hung out on the beach way into the night. They started and bonfire and some others came and danced to the music that blasted from the Woodie’s speakers. It was so much fun. It was when Miroku and Sango was doing Karaoke to ‘I’m walking on sunshine’ that Inuyasha kissed Kagome. She was surprised but soon relaxed and wrapped her arms around him. He licked her lips and she granted him passage. She closed her eyes and began to run over his tongue with hers.
He pushed her back onto the sand, laying over her halfway, and she delved her tongue into his mouth. She ran hers over his tongue, teeth, and mouth. She was a little surprised when she pricked herself on one of his fangs and he jerked away. “Sorry,” he laughed nervously.
“It’s okay,” She said before pulling his face down to meet hers.
They went away from the group that night and made love under the full moon. Inuyasha pumped into her slowly with the rhythm of the waves lapping up onto the beach until she yelled at him to go faster. When they reached their high, their screams were dulled out by the roar of the wave and the music that blasted out of the little station wagon. They didn’t say anything as they held each other in the afterglow. It was too perfect and neither wanted to ruin it.
Kagome and Sango didn’t get back till well over midnight. Kagome kissed Inuyasha goodbye and all of them went to bed with promises of tomorrow swimming around in their heads.
????????????????????????????????????
They all spent the rest of that summer together. They spent the mornings surfing and the afternoons exploring the island. Inuyasha and Kagome fell deeper in love every day. Being together just felt right somehow. Natural. But the summer went by way too quickly. Kagome was going to Tokyo University at the end of the summer and had to leave.
He held her close as she cried in his chest. Her family was waiting for her at the terminal. Sango and Miroku were kissing each other goodbye and people were beginning to worry because neither had come up for breath for quite a while. Ojii-chan looked at his watched and yelled at the young lovers impatiently, “The plane is going to leave! Come on.”
“I don’t want to leave you, Inuyasha!” Kagome wailed. He rubbed her back soothingly and tried to hold back the tears that were trying to surface. He wanted her to stay with him but she had a home back in Tokyo.
“You have to “go, Kagome. We knew this day would come.”
She looked up at him; her face was red and puffy from crying. “Do you want me to leave?” She cracked.
Letting out a sigh, he kissed her softly and said, “No, Kagome, I don’t want you to go. But you have to go.” He hugged her tightly and buried his face in her black hair and sniffed her hair deeply. “I’ll email you every day. I promise.”
She said something but it was muffled by his shirt.
He looked down at her and asked, “What did you say?”
She smiled at and whispered, “I love you.”
He shut his eyes to prevent the tears from falling. He really didn’t want her to leave. Opening his eyes, he smile widely at her and kissed her one last time, “I love you too, Kagome.”
Miroku and Sango separated and said their goodbyes and Sango stood by Kagome’s family and cried as well. “Kagome! Let’s go,” Her grandfather yelled.
Kagome took a step back from and flashed him one last beautiful smile, “Goodbye, Inuyasha…”
She began to walk away and he reached out and grabbed her hand, “I have something to give you.” He heard the old man growl in frustration. Inuyasha reached up and pull of the necklace that was around her neck and gave it to her. It was the typical surfer necklace with a shark tooth and leather string.
He put it in her hand and she folded her fingers around it and promised to him that she would never take it off. He let go of her hand and watched her disappear with her family down the hallway that would take her back home. He felt a hand grab his shoulder, and turned to see Miroku.
“We’ll see them again,” He promised. Inuyasha hoped that that would be true.
???????????????????????????????????????
Kagome rushed down the hall of her university; she was late to her next class. It has been almost 2 months sense she left Hawaii and she never stopped thinking of her hanyou lover. He did what he promised and they emailed each other every day and called each other when they could. But it wasn’t enough, she missed his face, his smile, his touch, and all the fun they had at Kekaha beach. She turned a corner and ran straight into someone and her books went every. She frantically began to pick up her books. “I’m so so sorry! I wasn’t paying attention!”
“You always such a klutz, Kagome?” Asked a familiar voice. Kagome stopped what she was doing and looked up slowly and the man she had bumped into. He wore leather flip-flops, khaki shorts, and a dorky Hawaiian shirt. Her eyes met his face and there were those gorgeous amber eyes that she fell in love with and his cocky grin. “Are you going to say hi or just stare at me?”
She jumped up and launched herself in his arms. “Inuyasha! What are you doing here?!” She squealed happily.
He kissed her fiercely before replying, “I’m going to school here now.”
“Really? But you don’t speak Japanese really well?”
“I think I can learn,” He said with a grin.
Is Miroku here too or did you come alone?”
“He went to find Sango.” He kissed her again, “God’s I have missed you.”
She began to draw invisible patterns with her fingers on his chest before asking, “You want to go to my dorm room?”
He laughed again, “Well, I wanted to go surfing but that’s good too.”
He closed his eyes and spread out his arms and enjoyed the feel the warm salt air blow over his body and through his short white hair as he just carved through the wave. He could hear the flap of his board shorts as they blew in the wind. He opened his eyes when he felt the wave flat out.
