Chapter Two – Fierce Awakening!

“Wake up my dear”, Mary said, “ you can’t be late for the trial or they will hang you for sure.”

Elaine rose in alarm with a sick look on her face.

“Well now that got you up didn’t it.”

Elaine giggled inside thought it scared her half to death it did have some humor…very little thought.

“Now here is a ice dress for yah,” Mary said handing her a black and white finely made dress with medium sleeves and white lace around the arms, shoulders, and chest, “I hope it fits I was going by looks and I wasn’t quite sure.”

Elaine tried the dress on; it was the most beautiful dress she had ever worn! It fit her perfectly, and it made her look like someone who was high up in society!

Elaine looked at Mary with watery eyes. “Why did you do this for me?”

“Oh honey I do it for everyone it is my orders, you have to look good for court don’t yah now, you are going to meet the great Western Lord, her Ladyship, and the great Prince! We couldn’t have you looking like a ragamuffin, now can we.” Said Mary.

Elaine shook her head with a smile on her face.

“I have to go tend to others but, you go take a nice bath, the bath house it out the far left door down the stone path by the fish pond.” Mary said.

“Thank you so much for all your great kindness.” Elaine said softly.

“No problem at all sweetheart, I have to go good luck.” With that Mary was gone, and Elaine would not see her anytime soon.

Elaine tool off the beautiful dress and put on an old robe she found on her bed and began to make her way to the bath house. A good bath would be great right about now. But when she got to the bath hose she saw smoke and thought there was a fire inside so she waited at a short distance, she had never see a building smoke before. Then a man waked out dressed in a robe! And he was fine not on bit of ash or soot. Elaine decided to be brave so she went in and low and behold the smoke was coming from the water! She had never seen such a thing all her baths were nice and clear, but she had to have a bath, she did think a nice cold bath would help her now to clear her head and shake her fears. She found a towel and some soap and tested the water to see if it was too cold. It was WARM, the water was warm, and it felt so good. She decided to get in she had never had a warm bath before in her life!

She lay back against a warm stone took a deep breath and began scrubbing her face and hands in the nice warm water. The feeling of the water on her skin was like a gift that she didn’t deserve. As se sat there the water surrounded like a loving hug there for comfort in her hard times. And she closed her eyes and hummed her song.

She thought of better days when the sunshine beat down on her brunette locks as she ran along emerald fields with those to Inu-Demons, the female her name was Elizabeth, and the man had the more traditional name of Bane. The man had stripes on his face as did the woman, but he had a star on his forehead. She had wanted to get to know more about these people who haunted her dreams but all they were was memories now, she could almost hear their voices calling her. They meant so much to her but she could not remember why. Then she heard a voice.

“What is that soft melody you hum? I have heard it before, but I forgot its name.” Said the voice but the bathhouse was so smoke filled she could not see anything but a vague outline of a body on the right of the place where she was currently bathing. She had noticed it was a man’s voice maybe even perhaps a demon, she sniffed the air, and yes it was a dog demon.

“I am so sorry I do not know its name.” Elaine said with her head hung as she amerced herself farther down into the murky waters.

“What is your name girl?” The man asked as he came close and his visage became easier to see.

Elaine did not think twice before she told him for some reason he seemed so trust worthy, “My name is Elaine.”

“Why are you here?” Asked the questioning voice.

“All I know is that I am to stand trial for some crime, I wish I could tell you more but that is all I know.” Elaine said looking down at the water with her finished sentence.

“You poor child where are your parents?”

“I know not sir I was told they were killed in the great battle as we all ran for our lives.” Elaine said.

“And who told you this?”
“The salve trader that first sold me.”

“You poor child, you must have been so mistreated, I am so sorry.”

“No please, do not spend you pity on me find others more worthy of it I loved my life I have grown to cherish it with every breath I take. I have had my bad times but I have been blessed with so many good things like this day for instance.” Elaine spoke out.

“But this it the day of your trial is it not you could very well die today, does that not make you fear?” The dog demon asked.

“Well yes I am afraid but you see I have felt the warm embrace of a hot bath and met a knew friend, I am so blessed.” Elaine said.

“Well then continue your melody sweet girl let me not start to ruin you day with my sad speech.” With that he left shadows taking the place where the silhouette of his body had been.

“Sir I did not catch your name.” By the time Elaine lifted her head and spoke these words the man was gone, so she went back to humming her song and finished washing off.

‘Who could he have been another servant, a guest, maybe even a relative of the great Lord himself?’ She thought to herself. ‘But I will not forget his sent he smelled of wild gardens and the woods itself the sent gave away to his physical strength and his soft smooth yet strong words gave way to the assumption that he was an older demon.’ ‘Yet that still does not answer her question, who was that nameless face in the shadows?’ She thought with a sigh as she began to lift her body out of the comforting warmth of the bath.

“The time has come… now I must face them.” She said quietly to herself as if she had to gather the courage to take another breath.

She put on the dress and she admired the lace and played with it before giving a rather heavy sigh and gathering the courage she desperately needed to get herself out of that door.

She walked back to the room she had been assigned to, because Mary had given her no further instructions, she set down her old torn clothes that looked as if they were rags and she sat on the bed waiting for some one to come get her. Then a demon showed up at the door a wolf demon with a closer look.

“They await you in court…I shall show you the way.” That was all he said and he looked Elaine straight in the eye as said it too. That was the only time he looked at her.

They traveled along many long drawn out corridors, taking many turns along the way. They finally stopped at two large doors made of Cherry Wood with two large handles made of gold.

The demon beside her said not a word but stood there in front of the door for about five more seconds and then he left. Elaine had no idea what was going on and she was dumbfounded she did not know what to next! She looked over her shoulder to see where he was going but he was already gone! She hung her head forward and thought of what she was supposed to do.

‘He didn’t even say a word I must open the door and go in myself; that must be what I am supposed to do.’ So when Elaine began to gather up the boldness and bravery to open that door, but just as she was going to lift her hand and open it… it was opened! She raised her head as another demon, a dog demon this time, who stood at the door motioned her in and then escorted her to a seat in front of three thrones, the first on the left was smaller than the other two and a step down from the first two, this must have been the Prince’s seat, the next was the grandest of all of them tallest and paired with a slightly shorter one that sat on the right end the middle must be the Lord’s seat while the one next to it must be his mate’s.

But there was not one person in those seats, they were amazing to look at, all of the frames were hand worked gold that had dog heads on the arm ends both left and right. The seats them selves were made of the fines purple silk with blue moons that were littered all over.

The room in itself was absolutely astounding! There were high vaulted ceilings with paintings or wars and trials of demons fighting for honor. There was a line of gold that ran around the edges of the ceilings and down each corner the walls were painted blue. The bench seat behind her were empty they were also made with the same wood as the doors.

The seat she sat on was beautiful. Golden silk with tiger lilies scattered all over it, it was made of wood not gold and the seat was warn more than that of the thrones, but it was the most beautiful seat she had ever sat in. She sat directly in front of the Lord’s throne about 15 feet back.

She hung her head, ‘What have I done that I am sitting here in this courtroom about to be judged, what crime have I committed?’ Tears bit at her eyes but she held them back, she would not cry not, here not now, and defiantly not in front of the Lord and his family.

Then a door opened and Elaine lifted her head to inspect the noise’s origin. The Prince stepped out followed by his mother, and finally the great Lord, Elaine got out of her seat at this sight, and once again hung her head.

The Prince seated himself followed by his mother and father. He starred at the poor girl. ‘She must not be more that a year or two under my own age, what crime has she committed, that would bring her here?’ He thought.

“You may be seated.” Said a female voice in front of her. Elaine had guessed it had been the Lady but she lifted her head to find her lady in waiting by her side and guessed she was the one to speak.

“What is your name girl?” Said the great Lord.

“Elaine.” She said quickly and quietly.

“Do you know your charge girl?” The great Lord said.

“No mi Lord.” She said.

“Well then I shall tell you… you have been charged with trespassing on sacred ground,” He began, “this is a very serious offense to a girl of your youth, what is your defense?”

“Mi Lord I did not know it was sacred ground, I slept there because I had not a home to sleep in, I had sat there often before but not one person told me, Mi Lord that I had done wrong by this, and so my only defense is ignorance that I did not know what I offense I had committed.” Elaine spoke slowly and strongly, but she only hoped it was enough.

“Where have you been employed before girl, and what position did you hold?” the Lady questioned.

“I served in many houses such as the house of Dorwik, the house of Elefanter, and the house of Norwitch, and mi Lady I served at a household servant, a lady in waiting, and an entertainer.” Elaine spoke smoothly like she had listed them all before.

The Lady whispered in her husband’s ear. The she motioned her had at her lady in waiting. Her lady in waiting then spoke up.

“Go and wait outside whilst the great Lord Inu Tashio decides your verdict.” She said.

With that Elaine left her seat gave a flowing curtsy and made her way to the door, once she was out and the door closed she gave a great sigh and collapsed on the floor.

Blackness flooded her sight, and she tried to gain control once again and stand up, as she began to push against the floor a strong and steady hand helped guide her. She looked up to see a wolf demon.

“Are you alright?” The demon said.

“Yes fine, thank you.” Elaine said softly.
“What happened?” He questioned.

“I think I was just under so much stress I blacked out.” Elaine explained.

“Why are you here girl, you are so young!” He said.

“I have been accused of trespassing on sacred ground.” She said.

“And what is your verdict?”

“It is being decide, at this very moment.” She answered.

The man rested his hand on her right shoulder and gave a big sigh, then got to her level and looked her straight in the eye.

“May God be with you, poor child.” He said then he turned and walked away without even a backwards glance.

She gave a sigh and dropped her head down closing her eyes and envisioned running in along wall of the palace her hand hitting each stone as she felt the warm sun on her face. She was happy here but she knew it was only a dream and that thought brought her back as the door opened, and she stepped forward and stood beside the chair she sat in only twenty-five minutes ago.

Then she was asked the question she dreaded the most.

“What is your full name girl.” The Lord asked as his son looked in question.

The prince smelled something, a ting of sadness and salty tears coming from the girl.

As she looked up the tears held in for so long streamed down her face, “My first name is Elaine and my middle is Cheza, but I have no last mi Lord.”

“No last name, that is unheard of!” The Lady accused.

“Well mi Lady I was taken at a young age and I do not know my parents of who they are, I was then sold into slavery worked at a child to earn my freedom and began working at different houses. This my sad story is not told often and so please forgive the tears you highnesses.” Elaine spoke, wiping her eyes.

“Don’t be silly, pray what is your age?” The Lady questioned.

“I am not but fourteen winters this season.” She said.

The Prince looked up at her and she met his gaze feeling his eyes upon her.

‘She is but a year from my own age, and parentless, she must have been cursed by God from her first breath.’ He thought.

~~~~~Elaine’s POV~~~~~
His eyes burn upon me what is he thinking?
He looks so young could he be my age?
Why does he stare at me now do tears still run down my face?
What is he thinking?
~~~~~End POV~~~~~

Elaine brushed a hand across her face to check for any remaining tears, and with that the mutual gaze was broken.

She hung her head in respect as the Great Lord stood up to speak her fate.

“The decision has been made and these charges of trespassing are true, declared so by yourself.” He said.

Elaine’s heart stopped and her throat caught, she was guilty, and she had to do something.

“But…… please….. I did not mean- …”

“Silence wench, how dare you disrespect the Lord’s words let him finish.” It had been the Lady’s maiden who had spoke out, and so the Lord did finished.

“And yet I heard the truth in your voice when you said you did this out of ignorance…”

Elaine stared up into his eyes, hoping to find the answer, but they were as unreadable as foreign language.

“…but, I cannot release you for you have no where to go and will violate this rule again, and so I have no choice…”

‘Oh my great God he will kill me for I have no where to go why, why did I have to be so stupid.’ Elaine thought.

“…but to offer you a job here, you will start at the bottom cleaning in the stables but with trust comes advancement, you shall see, I think you will like it here.”

Elaine broke her gaze as tears began to bit one more at her eyes but for the first time it was because she was so happy.

“You are dismissed, go and report to the stable manager.” Said the Lady’s maid.

Elaine gave a flowing bow, “God’s thanks mi Lord,” and she turned and walked to her new home.

In the Courtroom

Inu-Tashio looked at his son and wife.

“Let us go to the dining hall dinner awaits us.” He said.

The three of then got up and left to eat their supper.

In Dining Hall

Inu-Tashio looked at his son who had been staring at him.

“What is the matter Sesshomaru, why do you not eat?”

“Father why did you do that?”

“That girl, she committed a crime and confessed to it, why does she now serve us?” Sesshomaru asked

“You see my son she did not mean to do it, and so the crime did not fit the punishment, why should I punish her for something she did not know she was doing, and at such a young age?” Inu-Tashio said.

“I see, so to what position do you intend to advance her to?” Sesshomaru questioned.

“I don’t know yet but… your mother and I have been talking about getting a friend for you… so she might-…”

“No father please, I do not need a friend, I am fine and I am 15 winters now.” His son pleaded.

“Sesshomaru,” his mother scolded him, “This is your father decision not yours.”

“Exactly, and so if I can trust her she will be your personal servant, she will tend to you instead of Keri the nurse maid, it is time for you to stop spending so much time in the library and more time socializing with others, she will accompany you day to day as a friend.” Inu-Tashio stated.

“What you do not see father is that you cannot force friendship!” Sesshomaru said.
Elaine was ignorant of the fact that the dinner focus had been on he however, and by that time had slipped into a warm cozy soft bed with a warm blanket and she drifted off into a dream filled sleep, the kind where she was back home.
