Both of them couldn't have what they wanted most. So they put up an illusion, an illusion where they loved each other. He would hold her in his arms and whisper sweet nothings in her ear. She would cling onto him like he was her lifeline. This was their life. It didn't occur to him that she was hurting so much more than he ever could. It didn't occur to him that she actually did love him. It didn't occur to him that he was being selfish and was only using her for his own satisfaction. However, even with all this, a part of him cared about her. She wasn't just the girl who had travelled through time just to get to him. She was the person he confided in. And she confided in him. But it always ended up all wrong.
"Inuyasha..." She would whisper, her voice desperate and her eyes pleading. She needed him. And he needed her. They would stay by each other's sides for eternity...until the other got what they actually wanted. He would whisper her name back. His claws scraping her back softly as her breath caught in her throat. He would kiss her and touch her in places he normally shouldn't touch. But she was allowing him, and that was all he needed. Her hands ran through his silver mane as he continued his torture. His touch was like a fiery sensation that burnt her skin, his kisses felt like an uncontrollable passion which drove her insane. Their clothing discarded to their sides, their passion never fading, their screams and yells heard throughout the country. Their friends never dared to ask.
As the sun rose up from the horizon, she would awake lying next to him, rather than in his arms. His bare back facing her, his red haori covering their nude bodies. She would get up and dress herself, and leave without a word. She would return to the campsite and find her friends still sleeping. Then she would lean her back against a tree, sink to the base of it, and give into unbearable grief. By the time he got back, she would be preparing breakfast, pretending like nothing happened. Their friends still sleeping, and he would take a seat next to her, also pretending like nothing happened. He would demand his favourite food, only to be subdued by the dreaded spell. Their friends would wake just before breakfast, and nothing was assumed. However, it started to show in their faces. The sorrow. And it wouldn't go away.
The demon slayer and monk had only asked once before. "What is going on between you two that we don't know about?" The half-demon had a screaming fit and they never bothered to ask again. "Just what the fuck are you accusing us of, assholes?" After that, they resumed their ordinary lives - screaming at each other, arguing, he would yell at her if she had returned late, she would subdue him, and then she would return home again.
Until sunset.
At sunset, they would sneek off into the forests, and have their secret affair. Although sometimes they didn't see the point in keeping it a secret. Their after-dark meetings were so regular, it became their natural way of life. The girl had almost suggested telling their friends, but she realized that she wasn't actually the one he wanted. She kept her mouth shut. She only wanted what he wanted. And if he needed something, she would give it to him, no matter what it was.
"Kagome." He loved the way her name rolled off his tongue.
"Yes, Inuyasha..." Their voices were nothing but a whisper. Brown eyes met golden ones. Many thoughts would run through his mind as he was kissing her. He had always wondered how he managed to get this princess of pure white to fall in love with him. How he managed to have her completely was a mystery to him. Their affair only happened during the night. But for them, it seemed to last an eternity. The next morning, she woke up with a smile on her face. She was now snuggled into his arms, and his peaceful sleeping face was facing her. She carefully got out of his arms and got dressed. As she was walking back to the campsite, she whispered something to nobody in particular, but she knew they heard her.
"I win."
And she was a fool. She never won anything. Once again, it was an illusion. During the nights, she would have his mind, body and soul. She got everything except for the one thing she couldn't have - his heart. However, she would like to think that she had won the battle. The battle for his love. In the back of her own mind, she knew his heart belonged to the dead priestess. She knew that when he made love to her, he would think about his first love - but she always pushed those thoughts away. Her smirk grew wider when she heard his voice calling for her not too far away. He approached her side and gave her a quick kiss on her left cheek and quickly ran back to the campsite.
And for as long as their secret affair went on, she had something that Kikyo could never have.
She almost laughed out loud at the thought - sorrow has never felt this good.
