InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Sweeter Than You Think ❯ Kikyou ( Chapter 1 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha, or any related characters, nor do I own the song You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette.

Summery: Kikyou messes Inuyasha and Kagome=s relationship as always, but is the damage permanent this time? When Inuyasha chooses Kikyou Kagome knows that if she wants her hanyou back she must do something drastic to catch his eye. Something that no one -not even Inuyasha- has done before. She goes to hunt down Sesshoumaru. Inspired by the song You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette.

A/N: Okay! I swear this started out only as a one-shot, but as I was thinking about it, and working it out in my head, it totally evolved into a way bigger story. It will eventually be a Kag/Sess fic, but not at first glance. Happy reading!

*Random thought for the day*
I youkai have heightened senses, does that mean they can taste things better then humans can?

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Somewhere in a the Sengoku Jidai

It was night in the Sengoku Jidai. The forest was dark, shadows wrapping their cool fingers around the gnarled trunks of the trees, dancing around the pools of silvery moonlight only to congeal in dark, deep hollows under and around the life-bringing roots of the forest sentinels. All was quite and calm, the peace only broken for the occasional call of the roosting birds, and the constant the rustling of the westerly wind through the bows of the ancient trees. The leaves that crowned these bows were the darkest of green, untouched by man or moonlight, waving in the night. All unlit that is, but for the silvery light coming from a sinuous, snake-like creature that carried a ball of glowing something in it=s thin arms.

The creature slithered its way through the branches, swimming through the air with its cargo firmly in grasp. It twisted its way into a clearing occupied by a grand old oak tree, many feet tall. It would have been a beautiful tree in the daylight, what with its soaring limbs reaching to the stars. But there was something most odd with this tree. Perhaps it was the young priestess seemingly asleep in its bows, or the snake-things that glided around it with the balls of glowing light, only to deposit them around the beautiful maiden. Or most of all perhaps it was the way the glow surrounding the tree that cast eerie shadows around the grove: coupled with the tragic expression on the young woman=s face that seemed to create an almost tangible feeling of sadness and loss to dampen the air like the tears that should be coursing down the woman=s face.

One of the orbs paused in its orbit to hover over the women=s gently rising chest. It slowly was absorbed, the glow of life returning ever so slightly to her face. The orb was followed by another, then another after that until all of the orbs were now lending their light to the sleeper.

The process complete, the young women=s eyes snapped open to reveal orgs of dull blue, contrasting with her perfect china-doll face. The tragic expression faded and hardened as she scanned the clearing, her eyes stopping to rest in the direction of east. >I can feel her. My reincarnation who holds the rest of my soul. I must have it back if I am to get my revenge on he who killed me. Damn Naraku to hell! If he had not interfered then Inuyasha and I would beY No more thoughts of the past. That part of me is as dead as the rest. My soul comes first. I cannot rest in peace until I am complete. I am so weak right now with this fragment of what should be all mine. Now I must stop every night to feed off the souls of the dead. Even my Miko powers have diminished in the face of such weakness.= The women paused from her musing, signally to the creatures that hovered in the air around her. They wrapped themselves around her body, flying through the moonless night sky and past the old forest with it=s towering trees. As the priestess rose into the sky she thought more of here destination. >And with the girl and my soulYInuyasha.=

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Earlier that Day at Sunset

AOh come on Inuyasha! I know it=s that time of the month again, but do you have to be soYsoYgarr! Your impossible, did you know that?@ Kagome shouted in Inuyasha>s face as the group stood on a hill over looking a wide valley with a small village nestled far at the other end of it. The sun could be seen approaching the horizon above the forest in the distance.

AWould you just shut-up wench! I=m a little on edge right now! I hate being a pathetic weak human! Lets just get to Kaede=s village and get this thing over with.@ Inuyasha snarled in retaliation, crossing his arms over his chest and starting down the hill.

Miroku and Sango just stood to the side to watch this little exchange. It was the fourth argument today. Both of them had been at each other=s throats since this morning when Kagome had made a casual comment in passing about tonight being the new moon. Inuyasha had all but bitten her head for it. He had then driven the group back to Kaede=s village and the well at an almost dangerous pace. It had taken a sit from Kagome before the group was aloud to break for lunch.

ASango? Have you noticed that Inuyasha has been particularlyYvolatile this time around? He has insulted and teased Kagome all day, trying to get a rise out of her. She is usually more understanding about his >condition=, but even her patience has been tried by the hanyou. What do you think is happening between the two?@ Miroku asked, looking on in concern as Inuyasha yelled at everyone to continue on with their journey.

AWell here we go againYanyway. I think that Inuyasha is in such a bad mood today because we found no shards on the entire trip. That rumour that we travelled a week to find turned out to be a rabbit demon that was eating all the drops. Not even worth the fightYI guess that Inuyasha is also nervous, as it is his night of weakness. Poor Kagome. She always takes it so hard when Inuyasha is in a bad mood. I think that she loves him too much to see his bad qualities. Like that time-@ Sango was cut off by Inuyasha=s face inches from her own. AHey! You do realize that I can hear every word you two are saying, right? Now if we want to get anywhere soon then we have to get going now! And for us to get moving that means that ya have to get your act in gear and move!@ Inuyasha stomped off to rejoin the others in the group, who were by now out of sight.

Sango gave one look at the glorious sunset spreading out before her eyes before she Miroku exchanged glances, hurrying down the path to the bottom of the hill where Inuyasha and Kagome were arguing yet again. Kagome was sitting up against a tree situated a small grove at the bottom of the steep hill she just climbed down. Inuyasha was towering above her with his arms still crossed.

AInuyasha! The sun is setting as we speak! We aren=t going to reach the village tonight so we might as well set up camp here. Besides, I think my feet will fall of if I take another step.@ Kagome moaned as Shippou; who was perched on her shoulder; nodded in agreement. Inuyasha turned his angry attention to the kit instead. AWhy the hell are you agreeing with her? You haven=t down any work all day, catching rides on Kagome=s shoulder the whole time. Besides! You are youkai. You should be able to walk all day without anyY@ Inuyasha broke off from his speech, turning his gaze to the dieing sun. As the last rays of light kissed the hill Inuyasha=s form pulsed, and emitted a white for a single moment before it was over. Inuyasha was now human for the night. Everyone looked on in wonder. >No matter how many times I see that it is still as amazing as the first time.= Kagome thought to herself. ANow can we make camp?@ She asked. Inuyasha=s shoulders slumped ever so slightly. He hated being this weak more then anything; even his asshole brother. Inuyasha nodded his head in acquiesce.

There were all the regular activities of setting up camp. Gathering wood for a fire, starting the fire, stocking up on wood for the rest of the night, going to a near-by stream for water to boil for making supper (ramen). Kagome dug around in her pack for items needed for her part in setting up. Sleeping bags for her, Sango and Miroku. Separate ones of course. Shippou would sleep with Kagome and Inuyasha always slept up a tree, or at least against one. As Sango lit the kindling Kagome brought forth her kettle and packages of instant ramen. She waited for Miroku to get the water before starting boiling the water. As she waited she turned to Sango in excitement. ASango! I just remembered! Next week is my eighteenth birthday! It had totally slipped my mind as we were searching for that stupid non-existent shard. It will mark the third year that I=ve been travelling to the Sengoku Jidai with you guys. WowYcan you believe I=ve known you for almost that long? I=m going to bring treats for us all to celebrate! I can hardly wait!@

Sango just smiled in response to her excited friend. Kagome kept talking, but Sango didn=t reply. Instead she studied the person who had helped her through her losses, treated her wounds and become like the sister that she never had. She had certainly changed in the years they had known each other. Kagome had grown ever more beautiful with each passing year, attracting lusty gazes from the men of the villages they passed through. She also got many jealous ones from the women. And they had every reason to be jealous. Kagome=s blue-black hair tumbled down to just above her waist in gentle waves, an admired counterpoint to her pale, creamy skin. Kagome turned and smiled at her friend. Sango smiled in return and continued with her thoughts. Kagome=s face was so perfectly balances, her smile radiant and her blue eyes like sapphires. Sango couldn=t help but be a little jealous herself. She instantly chastised herself for feeling such, but it was hard not to feel so. Where Sango=s body was hard and muscular from a lifetime of fighting Kagome=s was long and sleek, curvy and soft. Not that Sango didn=t have any curves. It=s just that Kagome=s were softer.

Sango=s depressing turn of thoughts was interrupted by Miroku returning with the water. Kagome got to work and got on with making the ramen. Miroku sat down and promptly groped Sango=s posterior. Sango=s response was just as swift. SMACK. The sound seemed to echo through the campsite. Kagome spun around out of her crouch by the fire with a look of alarm plastered on her face. She instantly relaxed at the sight of the unconscious lecher by Sango=s feet though. AHe never learns, does he?@ Kagome comment at she turned to frisk the flavour packets into the cups of soup. AI don=t think he every will Kagome. He is a lecher, through and through.@ Sango sounded a bit wistful as she finished. AOh don=t worry Sango! Haven=t you noticed that he has stopped asking random women to =bear his child=? He only ever gropes, and even that is not as frequent.@ Kagome comforted. ASango looked rather surprised. He really hasn=t been asking that question anymore! But the gropingY= Sango stood up and walked over to look into her friends face for any signs of deceit. AKagome. Can you be sure? I haven=t noticed any change in the groping?@ Kagome just laughed. AWell he doesn=t grope me nearly as much as he used to. Perhaps he has decided to only grope you?@ Sango settled back down onto the log with a considering look in her face. But before she could reply Inuyasha stood up from the log he had been sulking on. AOi! Is the ramen ready wench?@ Kagome sighed and handed him his bowl, which he grabbed in glee.

Sango watched on with an amused expression on her face. >Just like a little boy sometimes. Sulking and upset one minute, then give him what he wants and his is back to himself.= As she thought this Miroku stirred at her feet. AIs that ramen that I smell?@ He sat up full and grabbed a bowl. Sango chucked again as she slurped her own soup. >Just like children, the lot of them.=

The group continued to eat until the ramen was all gone, completely unaware of the death stalking them on the windY

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Kikyou=s POV

>I am so close. I can feel her- no my soul singing out to me. Soon I shall have it back. Soon I shall be complete.= Kikyou smirked in triumph as she spotted the campfire belong her past the branches of the trees of a small patch of trees. She signalled her soul catchers to start the descent downwards, thinking ominously >I am coming.=

A/N: Well. That was fun. I really don=t know how this story is going to turn out, so please review me and tell me if I should continue with this thing or if I should scrap it before I embarrass myself. I think I=ve got a good start, but if you people aren=t interested then what=s the point? Anyway! Until next time! And R+R!
