The clink of the zippo opening echoed through the quiet apartment. The older woman on the phone sighed, “Those will make you look older before it's time.”
A mirthless chuckle followed by a slow, soft exhalation, “A face to match the mind, Mama. I'll call you later, I've got a few things I need to do today. Love you.”
Kagome leaned back on the couch and watched as the breeze ruffled the sheer white curtains over the open window. Some nights she would stare at it for hours and imagine them together, running. Other nights she would sit out on the balcony and stare at the moon in the hazy night sky. The stars didn't shine in Tokyo, too much light pollution. The wonders of modern man, permanent twilight.
It had taken two years to collect all the fragments of the Jewel of Four Souls and defeat Naraku. It only took five minutes to be thrust back to her own time after Inuyasha convinced her to give the jewel to Kikyo, the prior keeper. Kagome bit down on a pang of jealousy as she remembered Kikyo and Inuyahsa standing together.
“She does not belong here. Her purpose has been served. Go home, girl.”
And he… Kagome stared at the smoke drifting up, curling before dissipating altogether. She remembered him standing, bandages visible in places where his firerat robes did not cover, looking somber, resolved.
”Inuyasha, I-“
“No, Kagome. Go back to your time, you're safer there”
She could still feel the wind whipping her hair as he picked her up and took toward the Bone Eater's Well. She could still hear Sango and Miroku's protests and Shippo's wails. Smell his sent, feel his warmth and the coarse material of his robes as she clung to him crying, choking back sobs telling him that his duty was over, to live and be happy.
He sat her on the rim of the well and hugged her tightly.
“Goodbye, Kagome.”
“Please, don't do this, Inuyasha. I want to stay with you!”
His ears drooped, amber eyes clouded over, “Kagome, I-“
Then there came that small hope, the one moment that she visited in her dreams. In the best ones he told her he loved her and that he couldn't do it. That he wanted to live with her, as a half demon, and damn the jewel. In the worst? The memory stayed the same.
“Inuyasha, I-“
“I'm sorry, Kagome.”
The rest of her sentence flew to the back of her throat as she plunged into the well, the blue light engulfing her, carrying her back to her own time. She sat in the dark well and watched sullenly as a white orb came speeding down the well, knocking her back as it collided into her chest.
She knew that Kikyo had died, the part of her soul that Kikyo held to animate her clay body was returned to her. Leaving her to wonder, did she take Inuyasha with her? The recently found telling of the legend only mentioned that the sun set, that the priestess from the future, the half demon, nor the Jewel was seen again.
