InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Synthetic Twilight ❯ VII ( Chapter 7 )

Daimasaru was the spitting image of Miroku. He stood proudly showing off his little jo "... an' I been practicing this with Shippo! Mommy says I can't have a real one til I'm older, an' if I end up anything like daddy, she's going to bind my hands together and send me to a monastery. I don't know what that means though, but mommy's scary when she's angry." Kagome put her arm around Shippo and laughed.
"Daimasaru was Miroku's name of choice, wasn't it," she said laughing.
Miroku laughed as well, shooting a blushing Sango a bright smile, "Actually, that was my lovely Sango's choice. Though, it certainly is fitting, isn't it?" The group laughed again, though the smaller boy seemed a bit left out.
"Of course it's a good name! It's my name, and when I grow up, everyone's going to know it!" Daimasaru said indignantly. "Anyway, mommy says that it looks like she's going to have to send Shippo out to a monastery first." He put his hands together and mocked the little girls that often came to interupt their sparring, "Oh Shippo-chan you're so cute, come for a walk with me Shippo-chan." He pulled one of his eyelids down and stuck out his tongue, "Bleh, he wastes his time with those girls instead of helping me practice!"
"Is that so?" Kagome said while ruffling Shippo's hair. Shippo had grown quite a bit since she'd been away, he now only stood a head shorter than Kagome. He still looked like the Shippo she had left, though his features were starting to become sharper, she could definately see how the village girls could fall for him.
"Momma," Shippo whined while smoothing down his hair.
Kagome relaxed as she looked around Sango and Miroku's home, this is what she had missed, this was supposed to be the happy ending they were all going to share.
"I really have been gone a long time, haven't I?" she asked herself sadly outloud. Shippo scooted closer and hugged her, "That's okay, momma, you came back. We're together again, I'll keep you safe!"
Sango smiled, "Not too long Kagome-chan, we're glad to see you again."
Miroku cleared his throat, "Ah Kagome, how did you make it back to this time? I believed Kikyo sealed the well."
"She did, but Kaede said that she broke the seal before she died." Kagome shifted herself uncomfortably, "That's one of the reasons I came here, actually. I can't go back to my time and I haven't heard anything about Inuyasha or the Jewel so I was hoping that, if it isn't too much trouble, I could stay here and learn about demonslaying."
"Of course you're welcome to stay here, Kagome" Miroku said.
"Are you sure you want to learn demonslaying though, Kagome-chan?" Sango said.
Kagome nodded, "I want to be able to defend myself, and I'd feel better about it if I knew more than just how to shoot an arrow. If I never see Inuyasha or the jewel again, I'd like to know that I'll be useful to your village instead of a liability."
Miroku frowned, "You were never a liability, you brought us all together. Your powers alone are an asset."
"Still, if it's all the same to you-" Kagome said.
Sango stood up and stretched, "I understand. This isn't going to be easy, Kagome, and it's going to take some time. We can start in the morning if you feel ready."
Kagome bowed low, "I will not fail you."
Sango kneeled in front of her friend and pulled her into a hug, "We believe in you, Kagome. I'm happy to have you with us again."
Daimasaru hopped up and down, "I can help too! Mommy taught me a few things!" He pulled out his jo and made a jabbing motion at the air.
Miroku caught the small staff and pulled the little boy with it, "Not in the house, and it's time for bed."
"Not without a story!"
Jaken fussed over a young woman, "If we are to walk with Sesshomaru-sama you should present yourself as a worthy human, you aren't a little girl anymore!"
"Jaken-sama how am I supposed to walk in these robes!" the girl said, sweeping out an arm, trailing a long sleve on the ground.
"You'll ride Ah-Un, we're to leave a good impression on the lowly humans in the villages on our lands" Jaken said with his nose in the air, Rin pouted.
"Jaken," came the cold voice from ahead.
Jaken straightend, momentarily forgetting about the combs he had been fussing over in Rin's hair, "Yes, milord?"
"Rin will do as she pleases." Sesshomaru said without missing a step.
Rin smiled happily, "Thank you, Sesshomaru-sama!" She then turned and stuck her tongue at the sulking imp demon beside her.
Jaken squawked. "What would my mother say, to see me reduced to a human baby-sitter, not even a properly dressed human!" Rin dropped a flower crown on the imp's bald head and clapped her hands. "Mother was right, I should've been a ferryman" he moaned.
"Silence." came the voice again.
Jaken gulped, "Yes, milord."
Sesshomaru enjoyed the relative silence he was awarded witout Jaken bickering with Rin. The real reason why he was patroling his lands currently was to find Rin a suitable mate, she was around the age human women typically settled down with one. Of course, since he'd bound Rin's life to the Tensaiga, there really wasn't a rush. Still, if she felt so inclined, he could provide her with a list of people he deemed worthy. Perhaps an emperor or a regional lord? Those men typically kept concubines... he felt a low growl coming. No, an emperor or a regional lord would not do. The man needed to be strong enough to protect his Rin, have land big enough for her to keep a field of flowers (that he would provide if the man could not), be willing to have a demonically altered lifespan, and, oh yes, spend weekends with a demon lord. He let out an inaudible sigh. Perhaps he really had ruined his Rin for her own kind. He paused and tossed a bag of coins at his servant. "Jaken, at this village you will purchase kimonos for Rin. Rin, go with Jaken."
Rin clapped her hands, "Yes Sesshomaru-sama! Come on Jaken-sama, this'll be fun!"
"For you." Jaken grumbled.
Sesshomaru walked through the small village, past the people lowering their eyes reverently as he passed. That one was too scrawny, that one too ugly. Too arrogant. Too short. He frowned, no one in these villages were good enough for his Rin. He paused by the inn and narrowed his eyes, all along one side of the building little strips of paper like the kind used for making wishes during the Tanabata festival were fluttering. He picked one off, this wasn't the right time of year for the festival, what was this about? Hearts decorated the strip of paper and was that a cartoon of two fleas in wedding atire? That wasn't what drew his attention, the message on them was intriguing.
"Hn," Sesshomaru walked away to collect his servant and ward.
"Of course, my lord! It'll be gone within the day!"
Sesshomaru didn't understand how people seemed to gather meaning from a noncommital sound that he made, still, he supposed it was best if the little eyesores were gone from the village. Whether the message was meant for him or not, they had served their purpose. He stopped outside of the clothesmakers hut where he could hear Jaken speaking to the human inside, "...they should all be suitable for traveling."
"Jaken, we're leaving."
He heard a squawk and scrambling, "Yes, milord! We'll send for them in a few weeks, have them in the colors and patterns that Rin chose. Rin! Come along."
"Yes Master Jaken!"
Sesshomaru stopped in the field outside of the village to wait for Jaken and Rin. "Jaken, do you know of a Shoga-chan?" he asked as the imp ran up, panting.
"Ah, Shoga...", Jaken drew himself up and fanned himself with his hat. "The only Shoga that I'm familiar with would be Inuyasha's retainer's Shoga. The two of them have been betrothed since-"
"Send for Myoga when we reach the castle, Shoga has some information that is valuable to me."
"Yes, milord! Jaken will do as Sesshomaru-sama wishes!"
"Get up, you disgrace our father." Sesshomaru seethed over a battered Inuyasha.
Inuyasha spit blood at his brother, "Go fuck yourself. I couldn't save her and I sent the other away to save herself."
Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes and saw the hell imps creeping towards the half demon. "Unacceptable." he said to them as he swiped Tensaiga at his brother and the imps. Inuyasha cursed as the color returned to his face and his wounds healed leaving only dried blood matting his hair and clothes.
"Goddammit, just leave me to die, will you! It's better this way."
Sesshomaru growled, "Perhaps, but your life belongs to me and me alone. You will die only when I will it, not before. If you manage to find a place to die beyond Tensaiga's reach, hear me brother, I will ressurect you using other means."
"Bastard."
Sesshomaru gave a small smile at the memory. He would have to go up to visit Totosai in the coming weeks to see if the wooden box he was having fashioned out of Boksuno's wood had been completed. The tree had given him a hefty branch with which to make the box, it was to put a protective barrier and hide the aura of the Shikon no Tama. He held up the small jewel with his regrown arm, it had gifted him this after carrying it around for a few weeks. Such a powerful bauble should not exist in this world. He agreed to take it from Inuyasha a few years ago after Kikyo died, since then Inuyasha had made it his mission to die himself. Pathetic. He dropped the jewel into a drawer in his desk as he saw Jaken's shadow approach to the sliding door.
"Sesshomaru-sama, I have brought Myoga to see you as requested, are you available?"
"See him in, Jaken."
"Yes, milord."
The door slid open and a few seconds later, Myoga stood on his desk, smoothing his robes. "What an honor to be called for by you, Sesshomaru-sama, how can I be of service?"
"It has been brought to this Sesshomaru that your betrothed has information that I desire. What do you know of this?" Sesshomaru said, dropping the little strip of paper onto the desk.
Myoga turned a shade of green, "I believe it to be a trap by Shoga to wed, my lord."
"No matter. You will see this Shoga, and you will verify whether the information is true or false."
"M-my lord? Perhaps it would be best to send someone else, hmm?" Myoga stuttered.
Sesshomaru began to drip poison from his fingertips around Myoga, each drop landed with a hiss and a sickly sweet smell filled the air. "Perhaps you did not understand." Myoga gulped at the look the demon lord was giving him. "This, Myoga, is not a request."
"Y-yes Sesshomaru-sama."
"Myoga, do not run from this order. This Sesshomaru will make it... unpleasant for you if you do."
"O-of course my lord, I will return with the information."
"Good. You may leave now."
Sesshomaru stared at the little hole the flea demon had made during his hasty exit. Myoga really was a valuable informant, and if he believed that Shoga would share the information with anyone else, he would have sent someone else. Of course it was a trap for Myoga, but he couldn't let something like this slip by if it were true. Besides, he was tired of saving the half-breed's ass. Wasn't it enough that he hadn't killed him yet?
