InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Synthetic Twilight ❯ XVI ( Chapter 16 )

Inuyasha sat in Goshinbo waiting to see the light carrying Kagome from this time- and out of his life forever. He was sad to have her go so upset with him but if she was alive, that was enough. It had to be. This time he'd get Miroku to seal it with sutras around the well, hidden in the dirt so she wouldn't be able to find them. A few minutes passed and nothing happened, her screams reached out to him, "What the fuck am I supposed to do here?!", the frustration in her voice was almost a palpable thing. His heart clenched with at the small, selfish joy that she was here, with him, forever. His ears flattened, She'll never be safe. She'll never have a normal life because of it, just like Kikyo. He watched as she climbed out of the well and sat against it looking at the night sky.
He remembered sitting with her on nights like these when they were still looking for jewel shards, watching her look at the sky. "Why do you always stare at the sky like that?" he had asked her one night. She kept her gaze up and smiled wistfully, "Because you can't see the sky like this in my time, there's nothing but light so it covers the stars. Isn't it beautiful?"
Inyasha smiled sadly as he remembered his response; giving the girl an irritated look he'd replied, "It's just stars, who cares?"
His gruff answer didn't phase the girl a bit, "I guess it would be hard for people to understand in this time. They've always been here at night, such small things tend to be overlooked, so their beauty is taken for granted. I never saw nights like these in my time so for me, at least, it's something to cherish."
He understood that feeling now, even so, when he laid on the deck to watch the stars when the rest of the crew lay sleeping- it was only to remember the girl that he'd left behind so long ago. He sighed and jumped out of the tree and approached the woman warily, hopefully she wouldn't use those damn pellets on him again.

Kagome's head slumped forward and she jerked her head back up and openned her eyes. She could hear whispers, though she could barely discern them, "Free us... serve only you...," the voices were hideous and yet there was a seductive quality about them. She reached into her armor and pulled out the chain that still held the Jewel of Four Souls and stared at the jewel sleepily, the whispers continued but one voice was becoming clearer- a woman's voice. "Do not be deceived," it reprimanded Kagome sternly.
"Shut up," Kagome muttered and placed her hands around the jewel. The voices were silenced as the purple was removed from it. Is this what it feels like to be delirious from lack of sleep?, she wondered as her head pitched back and struck the lip of the well hard.
"Kagome?" Inuyasha asked as he inched slowly forward.
Kagome glared at Inuyasha through half-openned eyes, " 'Thought I told you to g'way," she mumbled.
"Yeah, well," he reached down, placed Kagome's pack over one shoulder and scooped her into his arms, "I can't just leave you alone out here," he received a half-hearted shove from the still nodding woman.
"Yes you could," Kagome said, stifling a yawn.
Inuyasha watched Kagome's face as he walked slowly to Kaede's village, careful not to jar the sleeping woman awake. Does she really think I could abbandon her? He frowned, I guess I did, in a way. It's not like I wanted to send her back, it was just better that she be in her time.
"Who goes there?" called a voice, taking him away from his thoughts.
"Taiki, if you wake her up, I'm going to kick your ass." Inuyasha said as he watched Kagome stir, only to turn her face away from the torches where Yamashita and Taiki stood guard.
"Inuyasha-sama!" he said happily, his eyes shining with worship for his childhood hero, "Did something happen to Sango-sam- oh! It's Kagome-sama!"
Inuyasha rolled his eyes at the boy who was practically prancing around in his joy. "Yamashita, can you do something about this horse?" he asked, jerking his head back to where Umakuroi stood.
"Yes, Inuyasha-san," the other boy nodded and led the horse quietly away.
"Are you going to Kaede-sama's? You're going to see her, aren't you? Oh she'll be thrilled to see-"
"No," Inuyasha cut Taiki off, "I have something I need to do, and I'm taking Kagome with me."
"Oh," Taiki said, looking crestfallen,"When you come back, you'll let me treat you to dinner at the inn?"
"Yeah, sure kid," he said, looking towards the south, he wanted to be far away from the village when Kagome woke so she couldn't get away so easily.
"Really?" Taiki perked up, "Okay! Well, hurry back!" he said, waving excitedly at the half-demon's back.

They were all together again, running. Kagome looked over and smiled at Shippo who was perched on Miroku's shoulder, he was holding Sango on Kilala, they all looked so happy. The dream was so vivid, she could even feel Inuyasha's hair tickling her as it flowed with the wind, he felt so warm... Her eyes snapped open to see the grass blurring beneath her, she reached up and gently fingered the lock of hair that had been sweeping across her face as Inuyasha ran. If she stayed like this she could pretend... she shook her head as she looked at the black ink that had rubbed off on her fingers. "Put me down, Inuyasha," she said quietly.
Inuyasha looked down at her, but his pace did not slow, "No, wench, I ain't leaving you, and I'm not putting you down so you can 'sit' me and run away again."
Kagome thought about sitting him on the spot, but at the speed he was going it would probably break a few of her bones, if not kill her, from the impact. She sighed and looked at the scenery blurring together into a sort of green and brown haze, "Where are you taking me?"
"To Kagoshima, I work for a guy down there, and I'm going to tell him that I can't go with him." Inuyasha said, looking ahead.
"Why would you do that? Stay there for all I care, just let me go home."
Inuyasha growled, "I told you, I ain't leaving you!"
Kagome's eyes narrowed, "Sure, you've told me that before, but it didn't mean shit last time either," she jerked on a lock of hair, "PUT ME DOWN!" she screamed.
He winced and flattened his ears, "I'm not fucking stopping to put you down, stop screaming and it'll make this easier for both of us."
Kagome fumed silently for a few minutes before wiping the ink on her fingers on Inuyasha's white shirt angrily, "Did you do this for Kikyo?"
"Did I do what for Kikyo?" Inuyasha snapped.
"This!" she said shoving her ink-stained fingers in his face, "Your hair, your clothes. You never did anything for me, but it's nice to see you jumping through hoops like a good dog for someone else. Christ, I never asked you for anything, and you-"
"I didn't do this for Kikyo, goddammit, get off of it. I look like this because some of the places I go the people don't know about half-demons let alone demons and it makes it easier. What about you, wench? Why'd you cut off your hair and have that demonslayer gear on, huh? Who'd you do that for? Kouga?" he snapped back, he'd missed her, surely, but this open hostility was starting to wear him thin.
"Kouga? I haven't done anything with Kouga!"
"Bullshit! I smelled his scent on you, and not just a little bit, but like you've been around him for a while."
"So what if I have? Where have you been? It's been five years, give me a break, Inuyasha! Don't give me that look! I saw you with Kikyo, I know that when I left the two of you weren't just friends!"
"W-we-"
"Honestly, how the hell can you get mad at me for being around Kouga? I'm tired of waiting around for you! And for your information," Kagome huffed, "I am a demonslayer, I'm not fucking playing dressup here!" She crossed her arms and glared daggers at the approaching port town, "Just hurry it up, I want to go home soon."

Emilo whistled low as he peeked through the crack in the door at the woman who stood with her arms crossed on the deck of the ship. Lina came out with a plateful of pancakes and a glass of milk and offered them to Kagome, who smiled and thanked her. "Ah, yer a regular Amazon, ain't ya?," she cooed, "Oh! I understood that word! Benjamin, how do I say 'you're welcome' again?"
"No wonder you were gone so long, but I don't think Fernam's going to be too keen about having two women on the ship." he said, winking at Inuyasha.
"Actually, I was kind of hoping he'd be here so I could talk to him about something." he said, stepping to the side to block Emilo's view of Kagome.
"Oh?" Emilo asked with an eyebrow raised, "Unfortunately, he's out. You could wait for him, but your lady looks like she's about to set you on fire at any minute."
"You have no idea," Inuyasha grumbled.
Emilo chuckled and leaned back in his seat, "Well, there's always telling the first-mate who could then relay the message back..." he trailed off.
Inuyasha nodded, "I guess, I wanted to talk to him personally, but I don't think the wench would cooperate with me long enough to see him." He sighed, "I'm going to be staying here, I can't go back with you guys. I wanted to thank Fernam for taking me on board and to appologize for not being able to go on the Clarius."
Emilo scribbled something down on parchment and looked up smiling, "You'll be missed, brother." He got up and hugged Inuyasha, "Go down and get your things."
Inuyasha paused by the door and smiled sadly, "Thanks, Emilo."
Emilo nodded and waved at the man, "Run for the hills as fast as you can. As for me," he stood up and stretched, "I'm going to visit a few oirans that I know."

Later that night, Fernam stood over his desk clutching a piece of parchment, "What the hell does 'Inuyasha has gone to the hills, dragging his Magdalena kicking and screaming' mean?! Jameson! You find Emilo and drag that good-for-nothing ass back here so he can explain!" he roared.

AN: Oiran were high-class prostitutes, they practiced court-customs held at the time, and could not be afforded by the general public. They were like the geisha as they were educated and entertained their customers, though the geishas weren't for sale.
So many people upset with Kouga... I used to root for him and Kagome when I watched the anime. Whoops! =X

Thanks for stopping by!
