***eleven years later****

"Hey…Kagome! Wake up." Kagome opened her eyes to find Rei leaning over her as she lay in bed.

"What do you want?" she mumbled, hoping that Rei would let her go back to sleep.

"Come walk around the grounds with me…I can't sleep," Rei replied. When Kagome didn't answer right away she let a small whine escape her throat. "C' mon, Kagome! It's such a beautiful night and I'm way too restless." Kagome sighed and sat up in bed. She looked at the clock beside her bed. It was flashing 1:30 am. She looked back up at her best friend and saw that her jewel-like eyes were dimly glowing. They only did that when Rei was coming into her heat. No wonder she was restless.

"You do know that if we get caught again we'll get another detention and clean up duty for the rest of our lives," Kagome asked. Rei nodded, shrugging. "Well...since we both don't care about that anyways, lets go." Rei smiled and hugged her quickly.

"Yes! Hurry up and get some clothes on!" Rei whispered excitedly. Kagome giggled at her friend's energy.

The girls had been walking in companionable silence for the last ten minutes. Kagome glanced over and noticed Rei staring up at the night sky. She followed her friend's gaze and saw the waning moon.

"Few more days until the new moon," Kagome observed out loud. "You ready?" she asked Rei, turning her gaze back to her Hanyou companion. Rei growled in slight annoyance.

"Are you kidding?" she scoffed. "I hate new moon. I hate becoming human." Kagome smiled sadly.

"Surely it can't be all that bad," she chuckled.

"Well, no, the only thing that really bothers me is the fact that I lose three fourths of my ability to see, smell, and hear, not to mention my strength and healing abilities. I feel as though I've been thrown into a lead suit. Other than that the change doesn't bother me one bit." Kagome sighed.

"I'm sorry that you think so poorly about humans," Kagome said softly. Rei bit the inside of her cheek.

"I didn't mean it like that," she apologized. "I just hate feeling like I've lost apart of my self…It's hard enough that I barely have control over my Youkai and Human instincts when I'm half and half…it just feels like I lose all control…I'd have the same problems if I changed in to a full demon." Kagome nodded, understanding her friend's fears. Rei was always afraid of losing control of her self and becoming a slave to her instincts. That was why she spent so much extra time with Professor Shesshoumaru, trying to learn how to control her self and her powers.

"Have you gone over those new exercises that Shesshoumaru was teaching you?" Rei nodded.

"Yeah, but I still can't call enough energy to me to make a real attack…there's no way I can fight like a human. I only know how to fight like an animal with my claws and teeth."

"I think you slack off just so that you can hang out with Sesshoumaru," Kagome laughed. He's so fucking hot!" she swooned, fanning herself with her hand. Rei laughed at her best friend. "Come on, he's one of the hottest teachers here at the Academy and every girl competes for his attention and you get extra lessons with him just because you're half demon. It's not fair!" Rei rolled her eyes at Kagome as she joked around.

"You're one to talk!" Rei countered. "He only ever smiles when he talks to you." Kagome blushed. Even though she was the only girl at the Rumiko Academy who didn't have a crush on the professor in question, it was still embarrassing when it was pointed out to her that she received special attention(the smiles). "Kagome, look…foxes!" Rei stopped her friend and pointed to where two foxes were playing twenty feet ahead of them in the moonlight.

"Aw…how cute," Kagome cooed. Rei watched them in longing.

"They're mates," Rei whispered to Kagome. "I can smell the pheremones…" The scent of the pheremones made Rei's body quivered. She longed to…well…she wasn't really sure what she longed to do. She knew she was coming into a heat soon and Sango had sort of explained the reasons for going into heat…but it was still confusing. And when Miroku had offered to explain it himself he had received a bloody nose from Sango. The thought of Sango and Miroku made Rei smile. The wrestling foxes reminded her of the way that her adopted parents acted.

Sango and Miroku had been married for four years and they still acted like newly weds. Lover's spats were a regular occurrences around their home.

Kagome recognized the look of longing on Rei's face. She often felt the same way her self. "You know…Hojo spent the summer as a life guard at a beach…he looks really tan. It suits him." Rei couldn't have fought the burning blush that stained her cheeks if she had tried. Kagome well knew of her crush on Hojo. But Rei wasn't in a girlie-chat mood at the moment.

"Do you ever feel like there's no one who'll accept you for what you are?" Rei asked quietly as they stood, watching the foxes continue to play. Kagome paused. Did she ever feel like that? The girl who lived in the shadow of her perfect cousin. The girl who couldn't get a spell right to save her life. Did she ever feel as though there was no one who would accept her for being her?

"Yeah…a lot of times," she replied softly. Rei nodded.

"Me too."

"Would you hurry up?" Ryu growled as he leapt over the eight foot stone fence. Koga was a step behind hind.

"We shouldn't even be here," Koga snapped. "Why couldn't we wait until tomorrow?" Ryu glared at him.

"Because, you stupid wolf, the sooner we find it the sooner we can leave. I don't know about you, but I'm willing to get a head start. The less time I have to spend around these pathetic humans, the better." Koga shook his head. He hated working with Ryu. He was cocky and arrogant especially since he was only a halfbreed. And being cocky and arrogant himself Koga found that Ryu rubbed his nerves the wrong way. But, when Naraku decides something…well…Koga supposed that he would just have to make due.

"And what makes you think that sneaking around the grounds in the middle of the night is going to turn up any sign of the Shikon jewel?" Ryu rolled his eyes. Why did Koga always have to ask so many questions?

"You have yet to come up with any bright idea by yourself, Wolf," Ryu snarled. Koga deftly kicked him in the back of his left knee.

"I was the one who got us into the school in the first place."

"Exactly," Ryu snickered. "No bright ideas. Your plan sucks ass." Koga shook his head. There was no winning with Ryu.

"I hate humans as much as you do but there's no way that sneaking around here at night is going to turn up anything. You lack common sense, little dragon…Are you even listening to m-"

"SHHH!!!!!!" Ryu had paused, his nose in the air. "You smell that?" he asked in a nearly inaudible voice. Koga stilled his movements, inhaling through his nose. As the cool night breeze changed slightly it brought to him a scent that tingled in his nostrils and made his body quiver.

"It's a female…no…two of them…and they're coming into-"

"No…they're already in heat," Ryu moaned. A shiver danced up and down his spine. Koga locked eyes with his demi-demon partner. Their smiles were identical, mirroring their malicious intent. Maybe they were going to find something on the grounds after all.
