'Chapter Five - Once Upon a Reality'

Golden eyes scanned the area boredly. The lush meadow of flowers circling the thick God Tree. Yes, the beautiful flowers had grown back over these long years. The memories of death, the scent of hatred, almost long forgotten in everyone's hearts. All except the certain half demon. These times meant more death and anger, less freedom and happiness. He too almost forgot the true meaning of happiness. Almost vanished form his soul, except one girl who brought him hope. The one girl he knew he shouldn't get close to. "Inu-Yasha?" The soft voice filled the morning air. Snow kissed ears flicked to her words. A soft grunt issued he was listening to her. "What are you doing in that tree again? You always are up there…" She trailed alone in comments as she rested her back against the elder bark of the tree. The tuff of flowers held in her arms. "Are you thinking, Inu-Yasha?"

He leaned his back against the trunk once more as she settled herself under it. "Kinda…What are you doing out here? Did Sesshomaru ask you to get flowers…?"

"No, you know he doesn't like them. But, it seems habit now, every day or two I pick a bouquet to set upon the table and everyday he throws them out. I don't know why, but I kept this habit since I was younger." She explained, eyes glazed in old memories.

"I know." He grumbled, he knew she took his mother's old habit. He sighed, but said nothing more as he closed his eyes.

"Are you tired?" She asked timidly. An amber eye looking up to him briefly.

"No, the sun is bothering me is all." He said curtly.

She nodded a response before another's voice broke the air. "Kikyo! Kikyo! Stupid girl, where are you?!" The rushed voice of the reptile called forth. The thick 'clomp' of the dull staff point upon grass issued his arrival. His large eyes swiveled to survey the scene.

"I'm sorry, Jaken, Sesshomaru calls for me?" She asked, getting half way to height.

"You've been being called, you stupid girl, and look you've been sitting! Not even doing work, how dare you take a break!" He shouted in disgust not noticing the angered glare being casted to him.

"Call her stupid again and I'll chop off that ugly head of yours. Your master may have that right but you don't, lizard." He growled, jumping easily from his tree perch. Kikyo couldn't help the soft hue of pink that littered her cheeks. A gentle smile crossing her features at his defensiveness towards her.

"Lord, Inu-Yasha! Humph, I can do as I wish, only Sesshomaru makes orders." He said pompously. "Come Kikyo!" He chimed as she nodded her head heavily.

"Good day Inu-Yasha." She said softly, walking behind the small demon.

"Yeah…" He snorted, keeping the sad look from his eyes. "Stupid Sesshomaru." He growled again, walking down the old path of the once lush town. It was destroyed by now. The buildings were in ruins; the people were taken in control of Sesshomaru. And those that weren't were in hiding from him and other demons. Yes, this deathly place was the future. The reign of demons and the fall of humans. As long as no one came up, this was how it would be. But where did that leave him? Where did it leave these half humans? No where, can't reign, can't belong. This was an ever-growing question for the young Inu-Yasha. A quick leap set him upon the remains of a home. He could only imagine who lived there before. Happy with their life, their family, their belonging place. But, now they would be in cages, shackled or put to work. Never to belong, never to have a family again. A hefty sigh left the hanyou's lips, a sad gaze casted to the crisp morning sky.

"Master, Sesshomaru! I have found, Kikyo!" The high pitched voice sounded through the large palace.

"Good, Jaken." Was the simple sound of praise.

He nodded, a smile crossing his features. The woman stepped forth, bowing to her lord, her master. "Sesshomaru, you called for me?"

"Where have you been?" He said, in his calm voice. He walking slowly up to her. His bare feet making the soft 'slap' upon the tile. She watched as he approached, unsure if he was angry or not. His face never let itself be read, so all she could do was wait. She knew the 'question' was more of a statement, she kept silent as he continued, "Picking flowers again?"

She nodded timidly, eyes looking to him for any signs of displeasurement. "Yes. I thought of getting them for the table. I understand, Sesshomaru, you do not like them as much but…It's a habit of mine, I am sorry."

"I have let you go to long. I have dismissed your faults for these years. When you left without my knowledgement, when you gathered items I did not like, when you left with my brother often. This is it, Kikyo." He snarled, his voice becoming cold.

She gasped softly, as his fingers snapped to position, "L-Lord, Sesshomaru, I am sorry. I will make up for my faults, I swear!"

An angered hand slapped across the soft skin of her face. She slammed upon the tile, but barely let a squeak of pain emit. She was trained never to scream out again, she was broken, she stood up once more, the flowers scattering by her feet. He walked closer still, the talons upon his toes slashing the golden petals as he came to her. "Kikyo…" She flinched, awaiting another blow. The small demon behind let a dark chuckle set to the air as he awaited her torture. "Jaken leave us."

"B-But, My Lord!" He whimpered, clinging to his staff as if it would change the decision.

"Now." He spat, giving a cold glare. That made the demon jump letting him leave as swift as wind.

"Y-yes, My Lord!" Was the soft yelp as he left the room, the thick door slamming behind.

"Perhaps you can…" A hand set softly across her recently slapped cheek. Frightened eyes watched him in amazement.

"Name what you wish…" She said softly, as his hand played with a lock of obsidian.

"You may go…" He said simply, a smirk gracing his lips.

"Y-Yes…" She bowed quickly and padded out of the room. Leaving her master behind, and confusion trailing around her.

"Yes, I have great thoughts for you, Kikyo…" He mumbled softly.

"Kikyo?" He snapped from his thoughts as he spotted the girl walking back to the tree. He swiftly bounded to meet her, cautiously going to her. "Kikyo, I thought, Sesshomaru called for you?" He didn't think her task would be done so soon. He slowly sat down beside her.

She looked straight, at the lovely trees just out of boundary for her kind to roam. "He did, but he said he would call me later. He didn't give me a task as of yet so I am here." She responded simply.

"Did you set the flowers up?" He asked, thinking something weird with her behavior. The soft scent of fear was still coming form her form; witch made him think deeper into this.

"No, he didn't like them as I said. But, I shouldn't talk anymore. Bye, Inu-Yasha." She said curtly, walking off back to the palace.

He blinked, tilting his head slightly. She never brushed him off like this. Something was definitely wrong with her. He wanted to pursue this; he needed to find out what was wrong with Kikyo. "…Kikyo…" He said simply, standing to his height once more. Watching as her form retreated into the dark depths of his home.
