Ana lay on the silk covered futon contemplating the information she had just received. He had to be lying. Right? “Why would I lie. I have no need.” The words bounced around her mind, ricocheting against its invisible walls. She really couldn’t tell if he was lying or not. But he was right. Why lie? 'To break your spirit.' It was a simple answer and he was the type of person who could do that easily and pull it off without much effort. He was manipulative, untrustworthy and downright fucked up in the head. She shouldn't believe a word he said. Her body wouldn't do that to her. Right? But he had been treating her nice. A bit too nice for her comfort.

The first time it had happened definitely caught her off guard. He hadn't dragged her out of her prison like he normally did. He had picked her up gently, wrapped his arms around her in a loving embrace when she tried to fight him off. The bath waters weren’t frigid to wake her from her daze, but warm and soothing. He hadn’t scrubbed her down, but let the cloth glide over her skin, hadn’t said any harsh words, but tried to calm her fears of him touching her. For a moment she had thought he was preparing her like he did last time when Sesshômaru had come to rescue her, but after, he simple took her to a room. A cozy one compared to her last, and left. No words, no unwanted aggressive sex, nothing. That happened for a few days until he saw her questioning expression and gave his answer. She remembered laughing but when his look hardened her heart felt like it had stopped. The laughter turned into yelling and the yelling turned into kicks and punches. He didn't retaliate. Didn't stop her from hitting him both verbally and physically. He just stood there.

Those jumbled emotions rose again as she touched her stomach, hands trembling as they rubbed over her skin. She didn’t remember when her last period had been and she’d been feeling nauseous recently, but that had to  be due to a number of things. The number one reason being the lingering scent of death and stress. Now that she thought about it, he had been adding flowers and other sweet smells into her baths and around the place. He had been feeding her properly, too.

No Ana! It’s just a trick. But what if he’s not lying. If that’s the case, I’ve betrayed my mate. That thought had her stomach flip. Sesshomaru would kill it for sure. Would she allow it?  Would he put her through something she didn’t want? She looked down at the slight bulge of her tummy and for a moment she wondered but then caught herself. ‘Nah, just bloating. My period should be here soon.’  “Deep in thought?” She jumped, startled by the voice. “Forgive me for frightening you.”

“I won’t fall for your trick Naraku,” she said turning to him. “I may be manipulative...evil, as some may say, but there is one thing I do not do, and that is lie.”  Those piercing red eyes looked honest but she knew better. “You should add devious to that list,” she puffed. He chuckled, folding his arms as he did so. “It’s that attitude that makes you so attractive to me.”

“You can’t go from raping me too treating me nicely. You like to see me in pain. You. Are. Tricking. Me,” she punctuated. “And from what I can remember you did call me dirty and unattractive when we first met. I thought you said you don’t lie?” That seemed to catch him by surprise. His brows rose in interest as he unfolded his arms. “I did not lie. At the time I did think you were, but as I got to know you my mindset changed.” He was close now, his face just a breath away from hers. “You will not fool me. I know what your game is.”

“Ahh. Do you now?” he mused, straightening himself. “Time will soon tell,” he said after a moment, eyeing her stomach. She turned from his gaze. Not that there was anything in there, but it was just off putting. Seeing that side of Naraku was both odd and nerve racking at the same time and she most definitely would not fall for his tricks. At some point he would go back to his wicked ways and if she didn’t keep her guard up she would suffer harsh consequences.

Several days had passed since that encounter and nothing had changed. He was still being too nice and she was still defiant. Okay, something did change. He didn’t shower her anymore, he let her do it herself. It was truly odd and for a moment she was tempted to accept it but caught herself. Getting comfortable would only lead to pain, she had to remember that.

Her nausea had gotten worse and she'd been having bad cramps. This is good. That's what she thought, because that would mean that her period was about to come. However, as the days trailed on and her period never came, reality started to kick in. She had never had any problems before. Maybe it was taking longer than normal, she was stressed, of course her body got confused. Or maybe… No she couldn't be. There is no way in hell she was. She was just late. Yeah that had to be it.

Maybe tomorrow, yeah it will come tomorrow.

As the day waned on it became evident that it wasn't going to come. "Stupid body. All you do is fuck up!" The pillow hit the wall, sliding down into a slump. "Fuck you Naraku and fuck you Sesshômaru. You both are just…" with nothing more to says she yelled out in frustration. This could not be happening. This can't  be happening! She took a deep breath, allowing the anger to wash over her.

Okay Ana, no need to freak out maybe tomorrow?

Just as the day before nothing happened and as she prepared herself for bed she found herself collapsed over a chabudai "Please, God. Kami. Whoever you are. Please don't let it be true. I won't know how to deal with it. I'll do anything if you don't make it true. I'll behave. I won't give Sesshômaru, my mom or my father any more trouble. I'll be a good girl. Just please,” she pleaded. She wasn't sure if anyone could hear, or did hear, but she hoped it would come to pass as she knelt, hands clasped together in prayer.

Maybe  tom- she couldn't bring herself to say it.

"Sesshômaru. Why haven't you come for me. I'm pre-…” she couldn't bring herself to say that either. “Oh God it's not yours." Her voice broke as she said those words, her throat closing up. The tears spilled into the pillow, flowing freely as sorrow washed over her. It was true. She was pregnant. Being constantly hungry, tired, cramping, nausea and vomiting, her missed period... It all pointed toward one thing. SHE. WAS. PREGNANT. Her body had betrayed her. Her mate would kill her, Naraku said so. He doesn’t lie. Curled up on the futon she wondered if she should have tried harder to commit suicide. Not being alive was much better than never ending pain and sorrow… No? It was like the world was against her. When she finally took a step forward she was pushed back like a farm animal. Why? Why must she be betrayed at every turn? First the world, now her own body.

Maybe… just give up?

ooOoo

"Don't cry my dear. Everything will be alright."  His touch was surprisingly soothing, his voice just the same. She leaned into it, allowing it to wash over and soothe her soul. She felt a small flutter in her tummy which made her smile. The baby was calm too. "I'm just scared," she confessed, looking up at him. "You do not have to be afraid. I won't  let that dog take you or our child away." He gently touch her tummy, "I will protect you both." She smiled, grateful for the words. Now she knew, believed in what he said. He wouldn't lie to her. "Now time for bed. " The soft kiss he planted on her forehead was welcomed as she laid into the futon.  I'll be safe. He promised.

Her joints popped as she stretched the sleep from her body. "Had a good night's sleep?" She nodded her answer in his robe, a smile on her face as she enjoyed his comfort. "It’s gotten bigger,” she gently rubbed her small baby bump, smiling when he placed his hand over hers. "You complete me," she swooned lovingly. She watched as his piercing red eyes filled with content. "As do you," he replied, gently rubbing her small, round, baby bump. She accepted the affectionate kiss he gave. "As do you," he repeated with a smile.

"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you both."
