Chapter 8 The demise of one: the humiliation of the other
Koga growled throatily. Sesshoumaru just stood there looking down upon Koga, showing no emotions what so ever.
"And who are you to demand anything of me. This doesn't concern you at all Sesshoumaru. Kagome is MY woman and I will see to it as such. Now leave." Koga bared his fangs to back up his words. Seeshoumaru took a step closer to Koga. Looking first to the wolf, and then looked pointy at Kagome, who was shaking behind Sango's back.
"Kagome…..Are you or are you not mated with my half brother?"
Silence.
"I, Sesshoumaru, do not like the wasting of time. Now answer me." His deadly calm voice sent shivers up and down her spine. Kagome then straightened herself and moved to stand beside Sango.
"H-hai, Sesshoumaru. I am. But he d-doesn't care about it." Kagome answered him in a quiet voice. Her head was bowed down so she couldn't see him.
"I see. Your scent is mixed with that of my brother. Surely I don't doubt that you can smell it, wolf." Sesshoumaru then looked back to Koga. "Come here wench."
Silence….again.
Kagome was petrified, to say the least. There was no way in all of the seven hells; she was going to go any where near him. So, she started to back away.
"I said to come here. Now do it." The command in his voice left her with nothing to do but obey. Very slowly she made her way to Sesshoumaru. Fear gripped her tightly. Kagome kept her eyes on the ground and head down and only stopped when she saw her feet. Sesshoumaru wore a smug little smirk on his lips as he noted the steady increase in Kagomes fear scent.
`Oh my God!! Oh my God!!! I can't believe this is happening to me….Inuyasha; I love you, my mate. I just hope it's a quick and painless-`
Kagome's thoughts were interrupted when a clawed hand cupped her chin and tilted her head up wards.
"Have you the mark that proves you to be mated to my half brother?" Kagome was momentarily lost in the depths of his golden eyes. `Their so beautiful. Just like Inuyasha's eyes. But unlike his, where I can read his emotions, I see nothing in Sesshoumarus's. He surely knows how to mask his emotions well.'
"H-hai, I do." Kagome whispered.
"Then show it. I, Sesshoumaru, command it of you." Kagome slowly gathered her hair away from her neck and turned around. Sesshoumaru then bent down and sniffed her exposed neck. Massive shivers went down Kagome's spine when he then rested his tongue on the mark. He pulled away a split second later and turned her to face him once again.
This time, when she gazed into his eyes, she noticed that there was a slight hint of something there, but it was gone in a blink eye.
"You speak the truth, Kagome. You have no need to fear me. I, Sesshoumaru, vow to you that no harm will befall you and your unborn pup."
"WHA!?!" Kagome took a step back. She wasn't sure what made her more speechless; the fact that Sesshoumaru said not to fear him and that he promises no harm to her or the fact that she's pregnant.
Koga, at this point, was beyond angry. He was on his way to make a grab for Kagome when Sesshoumaru's head snapped up.
"Don't" He growled out, fangs bared.
"Like hell I'm going to listen to some pansy ass, pretty boy like you. HA!! Kagome is MY woman. And I'll do whatever it takes to make sure she's impregnated with my pups instead of that half breed. Got it!!" Kogas eyes then bled to red just before he changed into his true form, the wolf. He was growling and snarling at Sesshoumaru. Kagome was oblivious as to what he was saying, but it was clear he was talking to Sesshoumaru.
"If it is a challenge you wish, with I, Sesshoumaru, then it is a challenge you will regret making." Sesshoumaru looked back to Kagome as his eyes, too, bled to red.
"Stand back and get to safety. Now." He growled.
Kagome wasted no time in getting back behind Sango as they watched Sesshoumaru transform in to his demon form.
Koga charged first.
"Sango, what are we going to do? As soon as the battle is over, we're next. With out your Hiraikotsu or Inuyasha here, we are just sitting ducks….." Kagome finally couldn't take anymore and broke down crying as a horrific battle was ragging before Sango and herself.
Sango turned and embraced her best friend to try and offer what comfort she could. From what Sango's trained eye could see, Koga was giving Sesshoumaru a run for his money. But that was only because of the two shards in his legs.
`This is just great. If Koga wins, he takes Kagome away before Inuyasha even knows what took place. If Sesshoumaru wins, we're dead. Either way, Inuyasha is going to be devastated. If only there was a way out of this….' "OF COURCE!!!"
Kagome winced away from Sango holding her nearly deaf left ear. She sank to her knees and just watched the battle. With out looking away, she started to cry again.
"What are you talking about Sango…sniff? In a matter of minuets we're going to be dead probably. I don't think Koga is going to walk away from this." Kagome bowed her head down as she placed her hand on her belly, crying harder then ever.
"Inuyasha will never know he was going to be a father……"
Sango didn't answer right away. She was busy thinking. With a final nod to herself, she sat down in front of Kagome. She needed her full attention, so she placed both hands on to Kagomes shoulders and looked her square in the eyes.
"Kagome. I may not have my weapon, but we are not powerless. And I promise, we will not die this day nor let that wimpy wolf take you from us or Inuyasha. Do you remember the lessons Keade gave you about how to make rosary?" Kagome wiped the tears from her eyes as she gave her friend a questionable look. Then it hit her as to what Sango was talking about. She slowly nodded her head.
`That's right. I'm a Miko. Well, miko in training anyway. My powers may not have manifested yet, but at least I know a great little trick.' Kagome had now stopped her whimpering. Instead, she was wearing a smirk dangerously similar to Inuyasha's. Sango took a step back as Kagome got to her feet.
"I take it; you understand what I'm talking about Kagome?"
She nodded, but didn't say a word. Kagome then looked over to where the two canine demons were battling still.
"Good. As long as you hold on to the rosary and don't forget the chanting words…..I just hope this works." Again, Kagome just nodded her head in reply.
Kagome pulled out the rosary Keade told her to always carry with her, and recited the chanting words over and over in her head. Once she was satisfied and confident enough to begin, she then noticed one small problem; two demons, one rosary.
"Sango!!! What am I to do??? I only have one rosary….Never mind." It had just dawned on Kagome as to WHO was going to get it. She perceived Sesshoumaru as the more dominate problem here. Koga was nothing.
Kagome then cleared her throat, intertwined her fingers around the rosary as Keade had showed her, and began to chant the spell.
"Ergo radius solis et umbra, ignis, aqua, caelum, luna terre, stella, hiems et aestas, autumnus et tempu vernum…..TEMPU VERNUM!!!"
The rosary in Kagomes hands glowed a pinkish-white before it came apart, flew across the glade and encircled Sesshoumaru's neck.
Feeling a bit drained, Kagome sank to one knee.
"It is done. Now for the word-" But Kagome cut herself off when a sickening crack was heard, followed by a spine chilling howl. The two girls looked over to see that Sesshoumaru was standing over the limp form of Koga. The white Dog-demon howled once more before starting to head over to them. Half way there though, he stopped for a moment. Then he transformed back into his humanoid form, oblivious to the blue and white necklace he now wore, it seemed. The girls clutched each other as Sesshoumaru slowly made his way to them.
He had sustained minor injury from Koga, but the gash in his leg had him walking slowly.
"KAGOME…..WHATS THE DAMN WORD!!!!" Sango yelled out.
"Oh shit. That's right……I don't know….. What should it be…..?" Kagome yelled back.
"I don't care…..Just make him stay put!!!"
"Of course." Kagome murmured, giggling to herself. "This is going to be great."
"STAY!!!" She yelled out. The rosary glowed blue for a second and then down went Sesshoumaru, beauty and all, kissing the ground.
"Come on….let's get out of here Kagome before he gets up!!" Sango tried to pull her along, but Kagome yanked out of Sango's grip.
"We can't yet. I have to get the shards." Quickly, Kagome went over to Koga's prone body. After a second of looking, she found them. But unfortunately, she didn't have anything to get them out with.
"Sango," she yells over, "I need your dagger. Hurry. The spell will be wearing off soon." Half a second later it seemed, they were running back to the village with the two shards in hand. But they didn't leave with out giving Sesshoumaru another `stay' command.
***
Lynx walked over to where Inuyasha was napping. An ear swiveled toward Lynx, but other wise, Inuyasha didn't move.
"Inuyasha, the sun is setting. The last cart of meat is heading to the village now. The cart behind me here has the pelts you wanted. Thank you again for your services. Good evening to you." Lynx turned around and left.
Inuyasha looked up and watched as Lynx walked away. He frowned to himself as he felt the old familiar tingling run through his body.
"Damn it to hell….How could I have forgotten the moons cycle." Inuyasha grumbled to himself. He took to the tree tops quickly as to try and get back before his transformation completed. But, about half way there, he stopped dead in his tracks.
`Damn it….I forgot about Shippou.' He let out a high pitched bark that only demon hearing could pick up. A few moments later a heavily panting Shippou came into view.
"Inu…..Inu-Papa…..What is it?? What's wrong?" Shippou perched himself on the hanyou's shoulder so he could catch his breath.
"I forgot that tonight is the new moon. We need to get back fast before I change." Inuyasha started to run again. He continued on, even as the change was happening. Then about a mile a way from the village, it was complete. Now that he was human, he walked the rest of the way.
"So, Shippou. Were ya able to catch anything today?"
Shippous ears dropped a bit as he answered Inuyasha.
"No, Inu-Papa. I didn't. And I did everything you said to do too." Shippou's eyes started to shimmer with tears. He just knew Inuyasha would be disappointed in him.
"Maybe I'm just not ready yet." Inuyasha looked over at Shippou.
"Hey…..don't sweat it pup. It takes practice. And a lot of it too. At least you have me to teach ya. When my mother died, I had no one to show me. I went hungry for sometime before I was able to catch my first rabbit. And even then, I had to chase it down. But as you saw today, when stalking prey properly, there is no need to chase. So don't you dare give up on it. I'm not going to allow no pup of mine to think their to small for nothing. Got it."
"Ok, then tomorrow can I go out and practice again Inu-Papa?"
"Hai. That you can. But not too far from the village, mind you. Hey, look…..we're almost home."
**
"Kagome, please come and eat. If you are with pup, as Sesshoumaru says you are, you need to eat." Keade spoke in a calm voice as she regarded the young miko.
She was very shocked, none the less, when Sango and Kagome burst through the doorway of the hut and clasped to the ground from running so hard a few hours ago. After a cup of sake each to help calm their fazed nerves, they told Keade what had just happened. When at last the story finished, Keade told Kagome of how proud she was of how well she had handled the situation. And then proceeded to laugh very heartily at the fact that now, the Great Demon Lord, Sesshoumaru himself, can now be subdued like his brother by a single word.
But Kagome didn't budge from the doorway of the hut. She just stood there looking out towards the forest and sighed.
"Ohh, Keade-chan. How can I eat at a time like this? It's late. My mate and son haven't returned yet. This isn't like Inuyasha at all. And after what Sango and I went through today, I am very worried. His brother is still out there somewhere."
Sango and Miroku were also becoming very worried at this point. They weren't sure if Kagome remembered or not that it was a new moon tonight, so they didn't say anything to her. It would have probably upset her more.
"Ok, Kagome. Tell ya what," Sango started to say, "How about you come and eat something, then we'll go out with Kirara and take a look around. Will that help?" She slowly nodded and made her way to the low table to eat.
Just beyond the forest edge, a very unhappy, but relived, Demon Lord was listening to the conversations inside the hut.
"Feh. So that's how she made me go down. You have a clever mate there brother. But how is it that you are not back yet? If the monk and exterminator can not find you, then I will. I guess I can't blame your little miko for doing what she did to me. After all, I've attempted to kill you all on more then on occasion. But now, things have changed. I am not the same as I was before. I, Sesshoumaru, have given my word that no harm will come to her and that goes for you, dear brother, and the rest of your little gang. For once I give my word, it is law."
**
"Hurray, we're home." Squealed a very happy, but very tired Kitsune cub.
"Hai. Thank Kami. My human body is beat tired…..*yawn*…..Shippou….remind me in the morning to go back and get the cart of pelts I forgot ok…..*yawn*…"
"Sure thing Inu-Papa. But what's it for?" Shippou asked.
"I'm going to make a surprise for Kagome. She's always talking about this `Khristmas' thingy were you get all sorts of presents."
"Oh……can I help too?"
"Sure ya can. But no telling your Mama, deal!!"
"Deal!"
They finally stopped at the doorway of the hut. Shippou was about to jump and run to Kagome like he usually does, but Inuyasha held him in place.
"No. Let's go in together. I'm pretty sure their all quite worried about us. But once they see that it's because of the new moon and that we're ok, I'm going to grab some food and go to bed. I am tired after all that hunting. Ok, let's go in."
They walked in and sat at the table. Being that he was in his human form, he couldn't tell where everyone was at. So, they just sat there and waited.
"INUYASHA!!!" The said hanyou turned human, barley saw Kagome barreling towards him. Kagome threw her arms around his neck, almost knocking him over and sobbed her eyes out. Inuyasha couldn't make heads or tails of what had his mate so worked up, but he was still able to pick up a great deal of distress coming off her in waves, even though he was human. Inuyasha held her tight as she cried on his shoulder. He couldn't get her to stop for nothing, so he opted to just hold her while stroking her back and hair.
"Sango, I think we need to bring out the sake again. Please go fetch it for me. Inuyasha, this is going to be very difficult to say. So I would appreciate it if you would not say a word until I have finished. Agreed." Keades voice was calm just as it was before. Sango brought the sake and Keade poured a cup and handed it to Kagome. But she didn't take it.
"What the hell happened to Kagome when I left this morning Baba!?" Angry fire burned in Inuyasha's eyes. Someone was going to die for making his mate so distressed. Inuyasha tried to pull Kagome away from him when Miroku brought in some food for, but she had a death grip around his neck and without his normal strength, he couldn't budge her.
Keade took a deep breath and began re-telling the events that took place shortly after he left that morning.
Sesshoumaru stealthily made his way to the entrance when he saw Inuyasha enter. He breathed a sigh of relief at the site of him.
"Ahh, so that is what happened to you brother. No wonder you're so late in returning home. It is a relief to see you safe and back with your mate…..Now; it is time for us to have a `family' talk, so one would say." Sesshoumaru waited until he noticed that the old lady had finished re-telling the story, then walked in.
But at the same time, a few seconds before Sesshoumaru walked in, Inuyasha was on his feet with Kagome in his arms. He was having a hard time processing what was just told to him.
`My greatest enemy, besides Naraku, kills my greatest rival!? Ha!! Serves that wimpy wolf right. No ever lives after challenging Sesshoumaru….' Inuyasha's thoughts were cut short when Shippou screamed and burrowed himself between himself and kagome.
"What the hell….Shippou….. What's gotten into you….what the matter…?"
"He's here." Kagome whispered into his ear as she slowly pulled away and looked to where Sesshoumaru now stood. No one said a word, or even moved to make a grab for a weapon. Inuyasha protectively wrapped his arms around Kagome when Sesshoumaru started to walk towards them.
"NO!!!! SESSHOUMARU, STAY!!!" Kagome screamed at the very top of her lungs.
WHAM!!!
"Argh…..What the hell did you do that for wench?" Came the muffled words from Sesshoumaru on the floor. Inuyasha had a smile from ear to ear. So wide was his smile you would have thought he would split in half.
"Well I'll be damned." Was the only thing Inuyasha could say at the sight before him.
