Disclaimer: I do not own any of Rumiko Takahashi’s creations. Although I would like to have Sesshoumaru and Jin (Samurai Champloo) for a night ;p R&R!

It’s not the quantity, it’s the quality that makes even the briefest moments worth while.

Temporary

by kytenluvinu

Sesshoumaru glanced out the window of his study. Time has really flew by for the youkai, and the one he has made himself close to had died long ago. Sometimes Sesshoumaru just drove around in his large car and thought to himself about the riches he acquired over the last five centuries. Sometime he flew in the skies and remembered the countless battles he engaged in. Sometimes he sat in his garden and thought of a lovely young woman, who grew up much to soon for his taste. Sesshoumaru noticed how lovely the weather was that day and thought it would be nice to walk the dog. Nice. The word was sweet on his tongue, it wasn’t a weakness as he had thought for so many years, if anything, nice things made you stronger. His younger brother was proof of that.

He had a happy golden retriever, named Kenshin. And the young dog was his only company, Kenshin was the only one he could talk to. But the dog was much more brief than any human, and loving him was simply out of the question. Sesshoumaru found himself at the local park, human and youkai alike romped through the fields. The humans, blissfully unaware. The youkai, at peace with the secrets they hid. Sesshoumaru took a deep breath and thought of how the world changed in the five hundred years since the death of Naraku. Suddenly there was a familiar scent and Sesshoumaru quickly scanned the area with his eyes. There was Inuyasha and his wife, Kagome, the miko turned hanyou. Sesshoumaru didn’t make a move as he watched his brother and his mate sitting on a blanket in the grass. Sesshoumaru noticed how swollen Kagome’s belly was and sighed softly. The woman had to be wonder woman, there they were about have yet another child. If twelve weren’t enough, sure a few of them were long grown up, but wow. Another baby. Sesshoumaru turned and retreated from the happy couple without saying a word. Although he and his brother were not enemies anymore, Sesshoumaru didn’t want to be regaled with happy stories of their lives. He sat against a tree, away from they’re eyes and he closed his eyes while stroking Kenshin.

After a while, Sesshoumaru decided to return home. The concrete streets were busy with the lives of the temporary. Sesshoumaru thought about their short lives and how when they die, the world will go on, even Inuyasha and Kagome. They will die someday, but Sesshoumaru, he will go on and the world will still keep spinning. Call it a gift, better yet, call it a curse. Sesshoumaru closed his eyes as he continued on the road to loneliness. He knew everyone would just step aside, he was pretty intimidating. The next thought was a angry one as he was stopped abruptly by a gentle force. Slowly he cracked open his eyes and was looking right into the angry brown eyes of a young woman.

“Excuse me.” The woman said not quite angrily, but not quite gently. “I’m sorry, but were you just walking with your eyes closed?”

Sesshoumaru looked down on the woman but he didn’t have to look far. She was very tall, and looked strange and out of place around the natives of the land. Just like him. She had brown skin and beautiful, dark brown hair that flowed past her shoulders. She was different from the women Sesshoumaru had seen. The woman in front of him had thick thighs and wide hips, her middle was pleasantly curved and her breasts were wonderfully round and tantalizing. She had a dark and magnificent scent of midnight rain and her skin looked delicious. Sesshoumaru noticed that her accent wasn’t that of a Japanese person, but she was quite fluent.

“Hello.” The woman said pulling Sesshoumaru from his reverie. “The least you could do is say excuse me. I thought the Japanese were suppose to be super polite.”

Sesshoumaru cleared his throat and glared at the woman before sidestepping and continuing his journey home. He heard the girl grumble a obscenity in another language, directed at his person before stomping off. Sesshoumaru paused and turned to catch a glimpse at the woman who caught his eye, only to see her disappearing in a crowd. Sesshoumaru shrugged and continued on with his life.

Real estate was a pretty lucrative venture and it has made Sesshoumaru very comfortable in his life. Inuyasha even had a taste of the pie, and took care of his family quite well. Sesshoumaru was supposed to meet with his brother that morning to discuss the appearance of a foreigner who was interested in a apartment. Inuyasha only owned about three buildings and wasn’t sure how to handle the paperwork and such. Sesshoumaru on the other hand was the Japanese equalivent of Donald Trump. And he would personally handle the situation for his younger brother.

Sesshoumaru was to meet the rather wealthy client at the apartment. They were late and Sesshoumaru was growing impatient. He decided to go to the roof of the building until he got a call from the security downstairs. The sun was beginning to set and it cast Tokyo in a magnificent glow. Sesshoumaru looked out at the large buildings and the busy streets. Suddenly the scent of midnight rain hit his nose. Sesshoumaru turned and looked around the roof. And there she was sitting on the edge of the roof with her back turned to him. Sesshoumaru stepped up to the foreign woman in silence. She didn’t make a move.

“What do you think your doing.” Sesshoumaru said suddenly, hoping to startle her. She didn’t move.

“I’m waiting for my apology.” The woman said without turning.

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes, and looked past her and in the street. It’s been a long time since he killed a human, and it would be so easy. Just push her, but then again, where’s the honor in that.

“How did you get up here.” Sesshoumaru wanted to know.

“Back door was broken.” Her voice was soft and seemed to wrap around his skin, he wanted to shudder.

“Did you break it?”
The tall woman stood, far more gracefully than any human deserved and turned on her toes. She was balanced on the edge of death and she was smiling. Carefully she tip toed on the small edge of the building and Sesshoumaru was half tempted to reach out and pull her away from the peril, but she obviously didn’t need his help. Her dazzling smile faded and she jumped from the ledge onto solid and safe roof, right in front of the youkai lord. She stood close for only a moment and caught him in a deep gaze. Then she turned away and walked toward the entrance of the building. Sesshoumaru said nothing as he watched her disappear down the stairs. Sesshoumaru looked up at the darkened sky and remembered her scent.

Sesshoumaru decided to wait a few more moments for the tenant and made his way down the stairs. That woman was still close her scent was getting stronger. Sesshoumaru turned the hallway corner to see her sitting Indian style on the floor in front of the vacant apartment. She had her arm propped on her leg and her head cradled in her hand. She slowly looked over to Sesshoumaru, who was slightly surprised, but didn’t show it.

“You are Victoria?” Sesshoumaru said in a bored tone.

“And you are Sesshoumaru.” Victoria pointed out, slightly amused. She stood and smiled at the glaring youkai. Instantly she bowed and then reached out her hand for a handshake. Sesshoumaru took it and was secretly amazed at how soft her skin was. It was a pleasant surprise. Victoria pulled away and waited expectantly for Sesshoumaru to open the door. Sesshoumaru brushed past her a took a silent and deep breath of her scent before opening the door.

Victoria followed. “Well then, down to business. I recently obtained a working permit and I am working in animation here in Tokyo. This was suppose to be a six month thing, but I love Japan so much I think I’ll stay longer.” Victoria said.

“How long?” Sesshoumaru asked.

“Well, I’m not sure. I will probably return to America for holidays and such. But I think I’ll call this my home.”

Sesshoumaru made a small sound at the back of his throat and turned away. “You say your in animation?” Sesshoumaru said as he led her into the kitchen.

“Yes, it started out as a government grant in art. I began a apprenticeship at a large anime company. I had my own ideas, and now my show is in production. Fortunately, my contract was quite generous.” Victoria explained. Sesshoumaru didn’t make any indication that he was listening and Victoria decided to change the subject. “So you and the owner of the building, your related?”

“We are.” Sesshoumaru answered and knelled at the table in the dining area. He opened his briefcase and pulled out an assortment of documents. Victoria sat on the other side and watched Sesshoumaru’s actions.

“I see the resemblance.” Victoria smiled. “Can I ask you something?”

Sesshoumaru stopped what he was doing and looked up at the woman. “Yes.”
“Are you human?” The question came quickly and without hesitation. Sesshoumaru was surprised and he let his shock show. Victoria half smiled. “Well, I was worried for a moment. It seemed you had no emotions. But I am pleasantly surprised.”

“Why would you ask such a question?” Sesshoumaru frowned.

“Hmm.” Was the response he got. Victoria reached out and straightened the papers in front of them. “Now I’m looking for long term. Money isn’t really an issue for me.” Victoria said. Sesshoumaru said nothing as he watched her carefully. Victoria looked up expectantly and Sesshoumaru pulled out the rest of the paperwork.

As they were leaving, Victoria cleared her throat and Sesshoumaru handed her the keys to the apartment. Victoria locked the door behind them and followed Sesshoumaru to the elevator. They rode down together in silence and exited the building in silence. Just as they were about to part ways, Sesshoumaru felt a hand on his arm. He turned and found Victoria smiling softly.

“Have dinner with me.” She requested. Sesshoumaru twitched a eye brow.

“Alright.”

She let him pick the restaurant.

“How old are you?” Victoria asked before taking a sip of her red wine.

Sesshoumaru clicked his glass with his claw. He noticed that Victoria seemed unconcerned with his appearance. “I am old.”

Victoria smile was faint, but it was there. “Well, that’s fine. In America I was always carded. People think I’m in my mid teens. But I’m really twenty-two.” Victoria sighed. “Luckily, I’m my father’s child.”

Sesshoumaru pulled himself from a dream. “Meaning?”

“Meaning, he was thirty-eight for about ten years.” Victoria giggled, but she seemed to grow sad. Sesshoumaru was interested. “He was a handsome guy, he was forever young, energetic. He knew when to laugh, but he never stopped working. He was a professional boxer you know. But he had secrets.”

Sesshoumaru shifted in his chair and Victoria looked up at him. “Secrets?” Sesshoumaru steered her back into the conversation.

Victoria placed her hand over her heart. “Heart disease.” Victoria picked up her glass and swirled the wine in her glass. “A hard head, makes a soft ass.” Victoria laughed at Sesshoumaru’s questioning reaction. “The doctors told him to calm down, he didn’t.” Victoria took another sip of her wine. Sesshoumaru watched her intently. “He was only fifty-six.”

Sesshoumaru lifted a bottle of wine and refilled her glass.
“Have you ever been married?” Victoria asked.

“No.”

“Hm, lucky you.”

“Why is that?”

“I’ve been married, at nineteen. And now, I’m here in Japan. And he is not.”

“Why?”

Victoria cleared her throat softly. “Why haven’t you ever married?”

“No need.”

“I see.” Victoria closed her eyes and listened to the soft hum of a violin. “Are you human?” Victoria asked as she opened her eyes hungrily.

Sesshoumaru didn’t make a movement and didn’t say a word at first. He only gazed into the dark eyes of the lovely young woman sitting across from him. “What else would I be.”

For the second time Sesshoumaru got the kind of response he prided himself on giving to other luckless saps. “Hmm.” Victoria stood and took Sesshoumaru’s hand. Almost in a trance he stood and wrapped a arm around her waist as he held her hand. Victoria reached up and placed a gentle hand on his strong shoulder. In a fluid and graceful movement they swayed with the sound of the violin. As if by magic they avoided the tables of the curious spectators.

“There is no dancing in this restaurant.” Sesshoumaru whispered into the soft ear of Victoria.

“Hm, you are old.” Victoria pressed her face into the curve of his neck. “You should live like the young, work hard and laugh.”

Sesshoumaru closed his eyes and laughed.

He helped her move into her new apartment.

“Leaving?” Victoria sighed as she flopped on her new sofa.

“Yes.” Sesshoumaru responded, but seemed to be waiting for something.

“Sit with me.”

And he did.

“Are we friends?” Victoria asked, not really looking at anything.
Sesshoumaru never really had a friend, he found no need for them. “I suppose.” He answered.

“Good.” She responded. “So we can be honest with each other.”

Sesshoumaru wondered where this conversation was headed. “Indeed.”

“Tell about your family.” Victoria almost demanded.

“There isn’t anything to say about them. They are dead, and Inuyasha and I are not.”

“Hmm, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru.” Victoria seemed to be thinking of something far away. “You both have interesting names.”

“Our father gave us our names. Is there something wrong with that?”

“Are you...” She began.

“Am I?”

“A perfect killer?”

“Yes.”

“I see.”

“Does that bother you?” Sesshoumaru felt compelled to inch away, but Victoria didn’t seem to have the same idea in mind as she inched closer.

“No, it really doesn’t.” Victoria gave Sesshoumaru a ghostly seductive smile. He was breathless. “Would you like me to tell you what my name means?”

“If you’d like.” Sesshoumaru was surprised and how difficult it was to find his breath.

“Victorious, I never lose.” Victoria smiled. Her body moved like liquid and she was coming closer to him. She reached up and traced a purple stripe on his face with her fingers. Sesshoumaru made no move to stop her. He wondered why she never asked about his markings like so many others, and right about then he didn’t care. He only looked into her eyes and didn’t say a word.

Slowly she began to pull away and in a quick motion Sesshoumaru caught her hand before it could complete it’s escape. “Is there something that needs to be won right now?” He asked as he stayed perfectly still, Victoria didn’t make a move to pull away.

“Truth.” Victoria whispered.

“No, I am not human.”
Victoria smiled.

She cooked him dinner.

Sesshoumaru was surprised by her. She was so calm, so determined. Yet she was young, happy and beautiful. She never asked him what he truly was and never made any indication that she was afraid of him. He could smell fear, and she smelled only of rain.

“You are very dark,” he said one day, as he looked up from a book she had given him. Victoria was reading a book he had given to her and smiled.

“Really?” Victoria sighed as she closed the book on her finger. Sesshoumaru watched her sprawled across his couch, her legs bent over the arm her skirt showing her prize winning thighs.

Sesshoumaru was curious about something, she still had yet to ask what he was. “How did you know?”

It’s been three months and she already molded with him, finished his sentences. Anticipated his movements. She knew what he was talking about. “I have a great imagination, And I’m open to the wonders of this world.”

“I am a wonder.” Sesshoumaru agreed as he closed his book and folded his hands over it.

Victoria laughed. “There are far more wonderful things out there.”

“Friends don’t hurt friend’s feelings.” Sesshoumaru said feigning a hurt expression.

“I didn’t hurt your feelings.” Victoria responded. “But I digress, how in fact am I so dark?”

“It’s your scent.” Sesshoumaru stated.

“Ah.” Victoria said and opened her book to resume reading. “I see.” She stated.

Sesshoumaru was in awe, she didn’t seemed concerned at all by his origins. He wasn’t sure why he was angry, but he was. He didn’t realize until a moment later that Victoria had completely closed her book and was looking right at him.

“So are you going to tell me what you are or not.” Victoria said.

Sesshoumaru opened his mouth to speak, but the words didn’t seem like they belonged. And for the first time, he began to regret the friendship. She was getting to close, and that wasn’t alright.

“Are you not afraid of me?” Sesshoumaru asked.

“No, I am afraid of you.” Victoria’s voice was silk and it wrapped around Sesshoumaru’s skin. He was surprised by her response, it was unexpected.

“Then why are you still here?” He asked.

“Because I’m afraid of what would never be if I left.” She answered. Sesshoumaru raised a questioning eye brow. “And I’m afraid of what will be if I stay.” Sesshoumaru watched as she stood, she didn’t bother to fix her mussed clothes as she walked through the space between them. She reached out her hand and he took it and pulled her close. He stood and pressed his chest against hers. They had their little moments, caught between friendship, and something more. He wanted to taste her, make her face twist with unbearable pleasure. He wanted her to scream out his name with complete ecstacy. Instead he remained still. Victoria reached up and again traced his markings with her fingers. If she only knew what that did to him.

“Are we friends?” Victoria asked for the second time. Her voice was raspy with wanting.

Sesshoumaru’s eyes were hungry and he swallowed her whole. As if the world had slowed he leaned into her and whispered, “more.”

They pressed lips. Burning desire fueled them and they devoured each other. It really has been a while since Sesshoumaru had a woman, but he wasn’t rusty. His tongue was greedily parting her lips and entwining her tongue with his. Victoria had her arms around his neck and let her hands entrap his heavy, silky hair in her fingers. She took the opportunity and pulled his head back. She gently traced his stripes with the tip of her fat tongue and Sesshoumaru allowed a growl to resonate from his throat. He felt her smile against his cheek.

“Interesting.” She whispered.

They made love three times that night.

They bought a home together.

“You are such a jerk!” Victoria flung a book in his vicinity.

“I believe a expression comes to mind.” Sesshoumaru placed a thoughtful finger on his chin. “Ah yes, I do believe it takes one to know one.” Sesshoumaru smiled as he watched Victoria’s eyes flame.

“Get out!” Victoria screamed, tears in her eyes.

He left.

She went after him.

He held her, she kissed him.

He asked her to marry him. She accepted.

She was crying, the smell of death was strong. She didn’t want to let the tiny bundle go. Sesshoumaru inwardly cried for his broken family, he didn’t deserve the happiness. But Victoria deserved so much more. They tried for three years to have a baby and now it was dead. They both died a little with the child. They didn’t think to try again.

They were finally blessed, they named their son Akio. He was a happy baby, they were a happy family.

“I wish you could come with us honey.” Victoria smiled as she packed her and Akio’s things. They were going to America for Christmas, Sesshoumaru’s week was backed up with meetings.

“Do not worry I will catch up with you.” Sesshoumaru smiled. Victoria reached up a touched the faint crow’s feet at the corner of her husband’s eye.

“Your getting old you know.” Victoria smiled.

“I am already old.” Sesshoumar pointed out.

“No your not, but your getting there.” Victoria corrected.

Sesshoumaru felt his skin tingle with warmth where her fingers touched him. Her took her in his arms and pulled her down on the bed, his kissed her furiously. And she kissed him back. Akio came into the room, his four year old golden eyes wide, his furry little ears twitching. He had one deep purple stripe on each side of his cheeks and flowing silver hair. He had his mother’s round face and cheerful disposition. But his father could see the potential within him. Sesshoumaru looked up and smiled, he pulled his son into the bed and tickled him happily. The boy tried to squirm away to the safety of his mother. But his uncontrollable giggles stopped him. Finally Victoria pulled Akio away and laughed.

“Oh my poor boy!” Victoria smiled.

“Get him mommy!” Akio’s smile was bright as he grabbed on to his mother’s neck and hung off her back. Akio looked over her shoulder to his father. “Your going to get it daddy!” With that Victoria lunged at Sesshoumaru using the weight of Akio and herself to knock Sesshoumaru on his back. The mother and son teamed up and attacked Sesshoumaru with a barrage of tickling fingers. Sesshoumaru laughed heartily. Victoria and Akio stopped to catch their breath and Sesshoumaru wrapped his arms around his loving family who had collapsed on his chest. He closed his eyes and thought of how much he didn’t deserve this happiness. But he was grateful for every moment of love they gave him.

He kissed them both goodbye, and watched them as they boarded the plane. Akio turned and waved at his father. Sesshoumaru waved back. Victoria blew a kiss and waved at her husband. Sesshoumaru smiled and mouthed the words ‘I love you.’ Not even sure she could see but realized she did, when she did the same thing.

The plane took off and he went home.

There was a knock on the door.
The police.

A crash.

No survivors.

Sesshoumaru felt his body go limp. He felt his soul die. There was nothing left for him, he locked himself in the home he and his family shared. He found himself sitting in his son’s bedroom for days at a time, staring at nothing. He wrapped himself in their clothing, breathing them in, wishing, regretting. He should have been there, he wasn’t. They must have been so afraid. He wasn’t there to hold them, to protect them. He could have saved them. Ripped open the plane and flew away. But he stayed and they went on ahead. He felt his body grow weaker. And one day he crawled into their bed with Akio’s favorite stuffed dog that he had forgotten to take with him. Sesshoumaru closed his eyes knowing that he would never open them again.

“I’m coming to find you.” Sesshoumaru whispered as he drifted.

I open my eyes I try to see
but I’m blinded by a white light
I can’t remember how
I can’t remember why
I’m lying here tonight
And I can’t stand the pain
And I can’t make it go away
No I can’t stand the pain

How could this happen to me
I’ve made my mistakes
got nowhere to run
The night goes on as I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just want to scream
How could this happen to me

Everybody’s screaming
I try to make a sound
but no one hears me
I’m slipping off the edge
I’m hanging by a thread
I wanna start this over again
So I try to hold onto a time when nothing mattered
and I can’t explain what happened
And I can’t erase the things that I done
No I can’t

How could this happen to me
I’ve made my mistakes
got nowhere to run
The night goes on as I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just want to scream
How could this happen to me

I’ve made my mistakes
got nowhere to run
The night goes on as I’m fading away
I’m sick of this life
I just want to scream
How could this happen to me

A shake. Sesshoumaru grumbled.

“Hey, wake up.”

That voice. Sesshoumaru stirred.

“Wake up, Sesshoumaru.”

Inuyasha poked at his brother again. Sesshoumaru felt something hard against his back and something warm at his side. Something wasn’t right. They’re scents were gone. Sesshoumaru shot open his eyes and stared his bother in the face. Kagome was standing next to him. They weren’t in his home and Kenshin was sleeping by his side. Sesshoumaru scanned his surroundings. They were at the park and he was propped against a tree.

“Sesshoumaru what are you doing sleeping here?” Kagome asked. She was stroking her round belly.

Sesshoumaru took a deep breath. “Victoria?”

Inuyasha gave his brother a puzzled look. “Who?”

Sesshoumaru shook his head and reached over to pet Kenshin awake. Slowly and almost painfully Sesshoumaru stood and turned away without a word. Leaving the confused couple behind.

Sesshoumaru made the journey home, he thought of his real dream. They were alive, and he knew it. He touched them he laughed with them. He could still smell them. He closed his eyes and tried to remember their scents. Sesshoumaru was abruptly interrupted from his reverie by a gentle force. He felt his heart skip a beat and the scent of midnight rain hit him with full force. He cracked open his eyes and looked her in her dark, brown eyes. She was the same, just like his dream. The same brown skin, thick thighs and even the small mole on her chin.

“Excuse me.” Her voice stripped him bare. It wasn’t quite angry, but not quite gentle. “I’m sorry, but were you just walking with your eyes closed?”

Sesshoumaru said nothing, he couldn’t find the words. The woman raised an eyebrow at him. And shook her head. Without another word she stepped aside and began to walk away. Mumbling something in another language. Sesshoumaru blinked and in a flash he turned and caught her hand. The young woman stopped and turned back to Sesshoumaru. After realizing what he just did, Sesshoumaru dropped her hand and turned away. Sesshoumaru was about to continue home when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

The woman saw the sadness, fear and regret in his eyes. She couldn’t let him just walk away.

“Sir, are you alright?” She asked softly.

Sesshoumaru took in a sharp breath and turned to face her dark eyes again. He smiled sadly, and she smiled back.

“My name is Victoria.” The beautiful dream said.

“I am called Sesshoumaru.” The sad dreamer replied.

“Well Sesshoumaru, I am new in Tokyo. Would you like to have dinner with me?” Victoria asked.

Sesshoumaru took a deep breath in. She was already surrounding him. “Yes.”

Victoria’s smile was bright. And once again, Sesshoumaru was breathless.

Together they disappeared into the crowds of the temporary.

The End

A/N: I had two alternate endings for this story. But I went with this one instead. If anyone is interested in reading the alternates let me know and I’ll post them. The song was “Untitled” By Simple Plan.
