The Offer
Scene 1-The Party
Miroku and Inuyasha happened to be walking past the door when they arrived. Miroku stopped as he always did when he saw beautiful women and made his way over.
“Kagome, so nice to see you again.” He raised her hand for a kiss and she blushed appropriately, though her eyes were looking over his head at Inuyasha.
“It's a pleasure to see you again Hidinni.” He finally released her hand and noticed where her eyes were looking. He smiled and turned his attention to her friend.
“Non-sense Kagome call me Miroku. Now who is this lovely friend of yours?” Kagome blinked and brought her attention away from the smug Inuyasha to answer the question.
“Oh, I'm so sorry this is Sango Totosai, you may have heard of her, she's my agent.” He stepped past her to Sango.
“Indeed I have. In fact I just signed one of your other clients.” He had reached to take Sango's hand in a kiss but instead she grasped his hand in a firm handshake, surprising him.
“Likewise…I've heard much about you. Trista was very happy and excited to receive your contract offer.”
Miroku still held her hand even though the shake was over. “Yes I think she will be very pleasurable to work with.”
“I bet.” Sango said dryly, and snatched her hand away. She realized that she was being rude and to one of the top names in the business no less. She tried to soften up her attitude with a compliment. “You have a lovely home Mr. Hidinni.”
“Thank you, but please any friend of Kagome's can call me Miroku.” He was smiling, and a little light twinkled in his eye. He had never heard such an obvious fake compliment. “Well we won't keep you ladies, why don't you come out of the hall and enjoy the rest of the house.” The women both said thanks and proceeded past them.
“Kagome.” Inuyasha acknowledged as if he had just seen her when she walked by.
“Inuyahsa.” Kagome said out of her tight lips, barely giving him a nod before she lengthened her stride to walk away. Both men watched the women until they were swallowed by the crowd of guests.
“Is she one hot chick or what?”
“Yes she is, though she hides it well under her cold demeanor.” Miroku said in a thoughtful voice.
Inuyasha turned and frowned at his friend. “Huh? Kagome doesn't hide anything, she's like a live wire. I still have the burns from the last time she cursed me out.”
“Oh, yes Kagome is quite attractive. I thought you were talking about her friend…Sango.”
“Yeah, she's a looker too, but to quite for my taste.” Inuyasha shrugged as if he was already bored with the topic. Miroku was quietly contemplating the dark haired woman. Finally he sighed and turned a rueful smile on his friend.
“Regrettably I don't think she's my type either. But the night is still young.” The two friends turned from the entrance way and re-entered the crowd where they were instantly pulled into conversation.
Scene 2-Inuyasha, Kagome…and Kouga?
Kagome was having a great time. Sometimes it surprised her that she was actually in the center of all the glitz and glamour. She knew she was looking good in her off the shoulder, tight red mini gown that stopped mid thigh. Her three inch pumps only made her legs look longer. At the moment she was in the corner talking to a fellow actor by the name of Kouga Meed. His was her age and had been in the business only a year, but had landed some good roles. They had worked together on one project and he was pretty good actor. For what he lacked in acting he made up for in sex appeal. He had made a play for her back then but she had been very focused on her taking off career.
Tonight however he was looking mighty good in his fancy suit, with his hair slicked back off his face showing his jaw line, he was sexy. Besides it wouldn't hurt if they were seen dating, it would be a good move for both their careers.
“So Kagome, when are you going to stop playing hard to get and let me take you out.” Kouga had one arm bracing the wall behind her and was leaning in towards her. Kagome took a sip of chapange and batted her eyes.
“Why Kouga I have no idea what your talking about. I'm not hard to get…if you know how to get me.” Kouga started grinning like a wolf who was about to eat the sheep when they both heard someone clearing their throats.
“Intersting covo, but I need to interrupt.” Inuyasha said not looking the least bit sorry.
“Inuyasha.” Kouga said straightening up. He was trying to be civil but he was pissed. That was the most encouraging thing Kagome had ever said to him.
“Right, so like I was saying I need to talk to Kagome.” Inuyasha didn't even bother to acknowledge the younger man and actor he had his eyes locked on
Kagome who was spiting fire at him behind Kouga's back.
“Can't you see I was talking to someone else.” Kagome said baring her teeth at him in a fake smile.
“Yeah, but it can wait.” Inuyasha said as if the matter was closed.
“Hey look buddy-“
“Look Mead, I know you were trying to get your groove on, but you'll have to do it on your own time. I don't know if you know how these things work, but these parties are thrown so business can take place. Now Miroku…Mr. Hidinni to you…you know the big producer and the guy whose house your in. Wants me to talk to Kagome about an business idea. You can come back and put your tired game on her after I'm finished.” Inuyasha said cutting him off and sparing him a glance. Kouga was turning red and Kagome knew she had to do something before it got out of hand. All it would take was Inuyasha whispering in the right ears and Kouga might find his self out of work for awhile. She gave a laugh and lightly touched Kouga's shoulder bringing his attention back to her.
“Inuyasha is exaggerating a bit. Look let me take care of this and I'll promise I'll come find you afterwards.” He gave him a big smile and his color went down some. Kouga wanted to punch the guy in the face. But he wasn't that knew to where he didn't know that right now Inuyasha was the hot guy on the scene and that meant that you wanted to be on his good side not his bad side. Plus it was widely known that he was good friends with Hidinni. Against his gut Kouga shrugged off the insult and threw a cocky smile at Kagome.
“Don't take to long…I'll be waiting.” And with that he swaggered off. Kagome watched him until she lost sight of him. More so to give herself time to calm down. Finally she turned her face back to the ass in front of her.
“You have a lot of nerve.”
Inuyasha took the place of Kouga and leaned into Kagome just like the other man had.
“Tell me something I don't know, like what do you see in that ass wipe anyway.” He asked eye brows furrowed together in serious thought.
“Well for one he isn't you and actually has some class. You are one of the rudest people I've ever met. Now tell me what Miroku wanted you to talk to me about.” He continued to look at her intensely for a moment and her heartbeat jumped in her throat. Finally he blinked and leaned back from her stuffing his hands in his pockets.
“Nothing, I just made that up to get rid of jerk face.” Now he gave her a smug smile and Kagome clenched her glass in her hand.
“You are a pompous ass.” Kagome said and went to walk away before he grabbed her forearm stopping her in her tracks.
“Before you go…tell me one thing.”
“What!” She said barely holding her temper together, as she saw a few people looking their way.
“What does it take to get you?” He said in his sexiest voice. Kagome eyes widened along with her mouth before she closed it and lowered her eyelashes hiding her eyes. She shook off his hand and took a step towards him bringing them very close. Slowly she opened her eyes and gave him a sirens smile.
“For you Inuyasha” She said in a velvet voice. “It only takes…a cold day in hell!” She ended her sentence by grinding her heel into his foot. She watched his eyes go wide in pain before she stepped back in satisfaction.
Inuyasha watched her walk way and the pain in his foot couldn't stop the boiling of his blood that took place every time he saw her. “I'll figure out what makes you tic one way or the other Kagome Higurashi.”
Scene 3-To much to bare
Sango felt out of her element. Even though the sleevless sequined gown of purple fell to her ankles she still felt naked. She was more comfortable in her no nonsense business suits, she felt more in control. And right now she needed that for she was slowly losing it. She had taken Kagome's advice and mingled. Some people she knew some she didn't. She felt the admiring eyes of various men and ignored them for the most part. She hadn't had time for men in a long time and now wasn't any exception. She smiled and was polite of course but it all felt forced and fake. To forced and fake even for a Hollywood party. What the hell am I doing here when my little brother is in a hospitable bed dying! She took another glass from a passing waiter and downed it in two gulps. I have to get out of here. She deposited her empty glass on another tray as she hurriedly made her way across the room to find Kagome.
Miroku frowned. He was one of the pairs of admiring eyes that had been watching off and on through out the night. He saw her hastily drink the expensive champagne…way to fast. Her face serious when he'd first met her was drawn even more tightly. He watched as she made her way through the crowd as quickly as the many bodies would allow. He sat his own drink aside and started to follow. Something wasn't right he summarized as he watched her virtually pull Kagome out of a conversation and head to another part of the house. I'll just go see what's wrong. After all he told his self, he couldn't have a guest at one of his parties having a bad time.
Sango had no clue where she was going in the big house but she pulled Kagome in the first room that the door was unlocked. It was a portrait gallery room and had two cushioned benches in the middle. After half way shutting the door she pulled Kagome down on one of the benches besides her.
“What in the world is wrong with you?”
“I'm sorry, I just can't take it anymore I have to leave” Sango had let the other woman go just to cover her face with her hands, now she was crying. Kagome was shocked. They were good friends and spent tons of hours together that had nothing to do with the business but not once in the last three years had she seen the older woman cry.
“Sango, oh my goodness tell me what's wrong. What happened?”
“Everything is wrong! I shouldn't be here while my only brother is dying from cancer in the hospital!”
Miroku took his hand from the door knob as he heard that piece of news. Her brother was dying of cancer? What the hell? He knew it was easy dropping, but he was in his own house and wanted to know what was going on so. He would stay here and listen for a minute.
“Oh Sango!” Kagome embraced her and laid her head against the other's woman's. “Kohaku will be all right you'll see.”
“No he won't. I'm a horrible sister. I should be at his bed side instead out flouncing around with these uptight stuck up people.” Kagome laughed trying to lighten the mood.
“I agree about the people part but not the rest. You're a wonderful sister to him. You've taken care of him since you were 20 and he was a little boy. You've given your whole life to him. I'm sure he's grateful and loves you very much.” Sango lifted her head and looked at the other woman barely seeing her.
“Fat good it did. All those years wasted just to see him die!”
Suddenly Kagome took her by the shoulders and shook her. “Get a hold of your self! He is not going to die. All he needs is the treatment right? The doctor said that there was a very good chance that would cure him.” The shake had been what Sango needed. She shrugged out of Kagome's hold and sniffed.
“Yeah, he said that the probability that he would be okay was very high. But you're forgetting one very important thing. Just where am I going to find 200,000 dollars in the next two weeks?” Sango said much more calmly now. “Huh tell me that. If he doesn't get the treatment very soon, each day his chances for recovery lowers. I couldn't stop my parents from dying but I'll never forgive myself if something happens to him.” Kagome stroked her hair and pulled out a tissue from her purse, wiping the drying tears from Sango's face.
“Hush now. It's not your fault your parents died and it's not your fault that he got cancer. Believe it or not I think something will work out and he'll get the treatment he needs. I do know one thing for certain. You sitting her crying isn't helping him. You need to get up and look for options on how to get the money. It definitely won't fall in your lap.”
“Your right. Crying isn't helping.”
“I know I'm right. I spend a lot of time around a smart older and wise lady.” They gave each other smiles before Kagome continued. “Look lets get out of here. You'll feel better tomorrow after you get some sleep.”
“Okay, let me pull myself together a little bit more.”
“Fine, I go make my round of good byes. Come find me when you're ready.” Kagome stood up and started for the door, only to be stopped by Sango's voice.
“Thanks for being my shoulder to cry on. It helped.”
“That's what friends are for. See you in a little.”
Miroku hid when he heard the click of heels on the marble floor coming his way, and watched Kagome's legs as she went out of sight. He left his hiding place and walked back to the door deep in thought. It was just like he'd thought. Sango was a complicated woman. From the sounds of it she was noble too. Taking on the responsibility of family when her parents had died at such an young age. Now that was loyalty. Unwanted a re-play of his argument with his father earlier in the week came to mind. He hadn't spoken to his father since. He heaved a big sigh of resignation. It was nothing he could do about that situation…or was it? Miroku wasn't as impulsive as his friend Inuyasha but from time to time the mood did hit him and now was one of those times. Without further thought he grasped the door knob and went in.
Scene 4-The Offer
Sango had pulled herself together after Kagome left and took notice of the room she was in. Slowly she got up and made her way to a corner. The room was full of abstracts and she immersed her self in trying to figure out the meaning of the one in the corner as she let her emotions calm down.
Miroku had meant to announce his presence when he entered but her shapely backside distracted him from speaking. He was surprised that she was so engrossed in the painting when just a minute ago she had been balling her eyes out. He walked over to her not bothering to mask his steps but still she didn't turn to him. When he reached her he reached out his hand to place it on her back.
The painting was simple that she was looking at which only vexed her more to understand the meaning. It was on a black background and had three different color squares overlapping each other in a diagonal direction. In each place the squares intersected it was black and seemed to disappear into the background. Sango had narrowed her brows in concentration when she felt the hand grope her behind. She responded instinctively and swung around connecting her hand to the face in back of her. She focused as her mouth gaped open to see her red hand print staining the cheeks of Miroku Hidinni.
Miroku let a small smile play on his face as he looked at the furious and surprised beauty in front of him. He had been meaning to place his hand on her back, but his hands sometimes had a mind of their own. Her steely voice brought him back from thinking about her soft tush.
“Just what in the world do you think your doing?” Miroku made a show of holding up his hands and putting them both in his pockets.
“Pardon. My hand slipped. I didn't mean to scare you.”
“You didn't scare me you assaulted me.”
His smile widened at her choice of words. “Now, now let's not argue over the meaning of words. Do you like the painting in the corner?” He changed topic hoping it would distract her and it seemed to work as she blinked at him as if he had just done a head stand. However he would learn that it took more then that to throw her off.
“Actually I don't like it but it intrigued me. Now if you'll excuse me I think I should be getting back to the party.” Sango wanted out of the room with him. That weird half smug half amused smile of his was freaking her out, not to mention his wondering hands. He nodded and she turned on her heel and started walking to the door.
“Ms. Totosai…can I ask you one thing before you leave.” Sango started to pretend that she hadn't heard him but she wasn't much on pretending or games. Turning she huffily said.
“What?”
“Will you marry me and have my children.” The room went silent after his question. He was no longer smiling but looking at her earnestly. For her part her mouth was not on the floor where it wanted to be but was firmly closed, as she looked at the man across form her. Neither moved for a moment until finally she blinked at him and took a step back towards him.
“I don't know if anyone has told you this before but you are a sick man and that was the lamest come on line I have heard in my entire life.” She didn't know what kind of reaction she was expecting but him bursting out laughing was not one of them. Her hand itched to slap him again. Miroku got his self under control as he saw her dark eyes flash and took a step towards her bringing them three feet apart.
“A couple of people have told me that I'm a sick man before but I didn't take them seriously. Coming from you though it sounds like a fact. And for the record I'm serious about my question…how about it.” Sango crossed her arms under her breasts and stared at him trying to decide if he was insane or just high off his own ego.
“I don't know what you're playing at but here's a short and simple answer even you should be able to understand. No, I won't marry you, no I won't have your children and no to anything else you're thinking in your preverted mind.” Sango gave him a tight smile thinking she'd put him in his place. Apparently not, as his face and voice became very serious.
“You shouldn't be so hasty to so no. How does the saying go? Never say never. I know you don't know me but I'm a man that rarely says what I don't mean. My question to you a minute ago was genuine. You may want to take a minute to think about it.” Sango had had enough of this madness. She had too much on her mind to deal with his craziness.
“I don't need a minute Mr. Hidinni I've already wasted enough of my time. Thank you for your hospitality but it's time that I was heading home.” She turned on her heel again. He waited until she was five feet from the door before he spoke again.
“It's a shame then. I thought we could help each other out with our little problems. Be sure to tell your brother hello and I hope he gets better.” Miroku said with a tinge of regret in his voice. Sango stopped dead at the mention of her brother and before she knew it she was standing toe to toe with the arrogant man.
“You keep my brother out of your mouth, you know nothing about me or him!”
“Maybe, but I know that he's dying and that you don't have the money to save him and that…I do.”
“How…how do you know any of that?”
He shrugged as if he was talking about the food on the menu. “I have my sources. Anyway, if you married me you could save your brother.”
“You've got to be kidding.” She said dumbfounded. She didn't question how he knew any further. It was obvious he did and that was all that mattered.
“I just told you I don't say things I don't mean. So I'll ask you one more time, will marry me and have my children.” Sango took a deep breath and took a step back shaking her head. What in the world is going on here?
“Why? Why do you want to marry me and why would you want to help me. What's in it for you and don't you dare say nothing.”
“I wouldn't dream of it. I have my reasons for needing a wife. If you say yes I'll explain it all to you.” He still stood with his hands in his pockets not wanting to scare her with any sudden moves. Sango steadied herself and narrowed her eyes taking a long pause before speaking again.
“Let me get this straight. If I marry you, your saying you will pay for my brothers treatment without delay.”
“That's correct, your brother's treatment would be paid in full the day we married. Of course the agreement wouldn't be that cut and dried. I will expect you as my wife to give me certain things in return.”
“I bet.”
“Really it's not just what you're thinking. It would be a few conditions. But considering it's your brother's life we're talking about I don't think the conditions are unreasonable.” Sango didn't take her eyes off him but her mind was busily thinking. There was no doubt that he had enough money to cover the treatments, her only concern was what was in it for him. What couple of conditions was he talking about.
“I need to know about these conditions before I can come to an answer.”
“No, I told you if you say yes then the rest would be explained. Look I'm a business man, and you're a business woman. Think of it as any other deal. You saying yes would be a tentative verbal agreement. Of course nothing would be finalized until we had everything in writing and that includes my offer to help your brother. It would all be legal and on the books. All the terms will be laid out and you won't get any surprises. So again I ask you what your answer is. I don't like wasting my time either.” Miroku knew he was putting on his hard sale hat, but he wanted this deal…this arrangement more then he realized.
Damn it I need more time to think! Shit by this time next week Kohaku could be recovering. That thought was all it took to make up her mind.
“Yes to your question then. Now do we have a tentative agreement?” Finally he smiled again and walked towards her.
“We do Ms. Totosai. If you'll meet me at my office tomorrow I'll have my lawyer start the papers and I'll give you all the details.”
“Not so fast. Tomorrow's Sunday and unlike you my lawyer isn't at my beck and call. It will have to be Monday.”
“Come on now, don't tell me you don't trust me. You don't need a lawyer.”
“I don't trust you. Monday your office 9am, both of our lawyers.” Miroku was impressed with how she'd come back and seemingly took control of the situation. He let her go on thinking that as he replied.
“Okay, that works for me.” He said it so blandly that she blinked. She had expected a protest. For long seconds they just stared at each other. Finally she couldn't take the silence any more and spoke.
“Is that it then?”
“Yep for now. Though I guess we should close the deal.” He said with a little glint in his eye and walked even closer to her.
“Yes, I've heard how you like to close your deals.” She said dryly refusing to back away from him.
“What did you hear? That I sometimes close them with a kiss instead of a handshake? If so you're right. Besides I think a kiss would be more appropriate…my future wife.” Her arm snaked out and her out stretched hand hit him in the stomach stopping his advance.
“That may be so Mr. Hidinni, but I'm afraid all you'll get from me today is a handshake.” He looked down at her hand then grinning grabbed it in a firm handshake.
“You really must start calling me Miroku.” She quickly took her hand back, making a show of wiping it on her dress in disgust.
“Now if you'll excuse me for real this time Mr. Hidinni, I really must be getting home.” She turn to walk away from him for the third time tonight. “I'll see you Monday morning.”
“Good night…wife.” He said testing the words on his lips, watching her backside sway out the door. “Well damn?” He turned and walked back into the corner where she had first been standing, staring at the picture on the wall. He had never liked this particular one. Or any of them for that manner. A decorator had done this room. After a moment or two he couldn't find anything to hold his interest and shrugged his shoulders, turning to the door. At least he had solved another problem. He felt lighter then he had in days as he went to rejoin the party.
AN: okay, so you kinda knew that was coming. But stay tuned to learn out the details of his curse and how will they get along even in an arranged marriage? And will Inuyasha and Kagome do something with all that sexual tension between them. Next Chap “Here comes the Bride.”
