Alone in the dark
Chapter: One
No one knows why this happed. What happened... How did this happen? How could this happen? It was like a repeating nightmare. Never waking from the terrors of the dark and disturbing images that the mind conjured threw out the night. These images that were burned deep into the mind. Scaring the most sensitive parts until they were numb. Completely and utter numb. Feeling was something you didn't want here. Not here.
A tear ran down the mud stained face of a little girl. "Mommy." Her mouth scrunched and repeated over and over again. "No... Mommy. Please come back." Shaking the remains of her dead mother. Lying in front of her in the middle of the street. The mother’s body stirred and sat up. The little one looked up to her mother. "Mom?" He gasped, but this was not her mother. Not anymore. It was a shadow of her mother memory. The blood stained body snarled at the little one before she leaned forward devouring her child. Only a scream was heard before there was no more life. Just empty shells of what use to be a human race.
~~~~~~
The only noise she could hear was her own feet as she walked at a steady pace. Her head moving back and forth darting nervous eyes as she sped up her pace when she heard a snarl in the distance, shuffling of feet, and a groan. Closing her eyes she nodded knowing what she had to do. Turning she saw what had followed her down the middle of the road. Kneeling she pulled a bow from her shoulder and one arrow from her quiver. Looking at the once human man shuffling to her he growled and outreached a hand, as if to explain to her how hungry he was. Pulling the arrow taut on the bow she took in a deep breath and let it out slowly as she released the bow with a whispered prayer on her breath. "Release this soul."
The arrow went straight and true and struck right in the chest. Standing, she placed her bow back onto her back and walked to the body that fell over flat on his back from the blow of her bow. Hearing him stir she continued her prayer as she reached his body and touched the bow to pull it from his chest. As her hand reached out a pink glow traveled down the arrow and seared the man’s chest. He screamed in agony as the soul that he kept into his body fought to keep onto the living spirit. Soon a small blue ball was released once the arrow was pulled free. Smiling at the spirit she sighed. "Go rest." Whispering to it before she thrust her arrow into the man’s face. He fell limp and stopped his fight. Pulling her arrow free one last time she cleaned it on his clothing before reclaiming into her holster. Standing up straight she looked up just in time to see the blue ball raise up into the clouds.
"You are free." Only embracing the moment for a split second before she continued her travels. I wonder how it feels to rise above the clouds... Thinking to herself giving herself relief knowing that the actions she just experienced was for the greater good. She saved a soul from the reanimated rotting corpse. It was the only way she could live with herself.
An hour later of walking she arrived at the high school. Squeezing herself between the gab in the chain linked fence she ran to the heavy doors. Checking her surroundings before entering. Taking a immediate right she went up four flights of stairs before letting herself out onto the roof. Closing the heavy metal door behind her she pulled a handle of a broom threw the handle. "Home sweet home." Sighing she looked around seeing her tent and a few of her belongings. Just where I left you.
Looking around her campsite she had one folding chair, one large green tent that held a brown sleeping bag, and few small things she had collected of the time of the beginning. Pulling her yellow backpack off of her she let it fall into the chair that faced a small fire pit she created with some small rocks and wood that she had scavenged. Crawling into the tent and onto her sleeping bag she closed her eyes, but all she could do was think of that man. Did he have a family? What happened to him? Images repeated themselves as she stabbed him right in the eye. A shiver went through her when she realized how calloused she had become to the world. Knowing if she didn't he would continue to walk the earth. Eating anything or one that was still alive. Even thought she could release the soul, but she knew the brain is what kept him going, and she knew getting bit meant turning into one of those things. Almost all of them that she spiritually cleansed she found gashes missing from them where others had fed on them when their bodies were still warm. Alive...
Not liking where this was going she turned over and looked up at the top of her tent. The sun was slowly setting and it would soon become pitch black. That was the worst part of being alone. Being alone in the dark. Closing her eyes she was able to keep her mind from replaying the days events just long enough to fall into a light sleep.
Drifting off, she felt herself falling through the blackness. Her body numb and limp. Looking around she wanted to reach out. To keep herself from falling, but it was pointless. Moving was not allowed in this dream state. Please, stop. She told herself, but not even her mind could control this place. Stop... Stop! Screaming in her mind she demanded this time, but no avail. This went on for what felt like hours.
"Kagome?" She heard male voice call to her
Hearing her name she became alert. Hello? Who’s there!? Her mind searching out for that voice, but she couldn't find them, but it felt nice to not be alone... Looking up she saw the small glimpse of light and smiled. His entire body jumping it woke her from her sleep. Sitting straight up in a cold sweat like she did every night. Looking around she saw the same small light. It was pitch black outside, and never a light anywhere nearby shone at this time at night. Crawling from her tent she peaked her head out and a motion of light reflected off the buildings below. Quietly she crouched and made her way to the edge of the school to peer over. All she could see was the glow of the flash light that swung back and forth as the figure ran. Looking behind the shadow she now seen what they were running from. A large swarm followed.
Eyes growing wide she scrambled to her bow and returned. Closing her eyes she grabbed an arrow and felt her energy drain into it before she shot. Completely missing any of the undead, but the arrow stuck in a house building across the street just enough so she could see the living from the undead. Pulling another arrow she let it release, then another, and another until there were no more up straight. Letting out a breath she looked for the human. The one that was still alive, but they were nowhere to be found. Letting out a disappointed sigh she ran for the door. Unlocking it and darting down the stairs. If I don’t hurry I won’t be able to free the souls! She told herself as she ran to the fence. Crawled through as fast as she could and then ran into the street. The same prayer as before on her lips. Touching the arrows one at a time as the bodies scrambled to get back up. She was able to stab two in the head, but by that time the others were back on their feet and gaining on her. Jumping back she didn’t even have time to draw another arrow before one at a time the bodies fell into a lump on the ground. Looking down then back up she found how and why she was alive. A woman? She questioned her own eyes before she grabbed an arrow, just to have it in her hands.
The pink glow of her arrow above them was slowly starting to fade, and soon would be pitch black once more. The pink glow vibrated off the woman’s face. “Are you bit?” She spoke in a firm strong voice.
Taken back she paused a moment before answering. “No, you?” Tring to make her voice sound strong, but it just fell short.
“I will ask you to put your weapon down.” The woman barked as she drew her own weapon into her hand that looked similar to a throwing star or short dagger. Kagome wasn’t sure, but she didn’t want to find out.
“No.” Holding her bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. “I am not going to attack you. Please, do not release that on me.” Taking a step forward to the dead, the woman jumped back and crouched.
“One more step and your dead!” She growled and twitched her wrist in a warning.
“Stop. I mean you no harm.” Her hands raised in hopes to look as non-threatening as possible. “I need to release their souls. Or they will never find peace.” Kagome spoke soft this time. “Please. Let me.”
The stranger eyed Kagome for a long moment before she stood and nodded. “Fine.”
Giving her a small smile she was sure she couldn’t see in the night she walked over to the bodies and touched each one in the chest as she mumbled her prayer. “Be free.” She whispered and one at a time a blue soul raised from each of the bodies except the last one. “No..” Kagome sighed and tried once more. “Damn.” Pulling her body up straight she covered her mouth with a hand and held back a sob. “I was too late.”
The woman watched her with wide eyes in amazement of what took place in front of her. “How are you doing this?” Looking from Kagome to the fading arrow above them. “You are a priestess?”
Kagome looked up and only nodded. “I am.” Looking up at the arrow she looked back at the woman. “I mean you no harm, but my powers are drained, and that light will not last much longer. I have shelter. You are more than welcome to find shelter with me till morning.” Kagome knew that it was stupid to invite a stranger into her sanctuary, but she couldn’t let her stay out here in the open. Leaning over a body she pulled her arrow free. Claiming them all back and returning them to the quiver on her back.
A long silent moment passed between the two before the woman nodded. “Alright, lead the way.”
Turning Kagome kept her guard up, her powers were draining, but she harvested enough for one last arrow if needed. “This way.” Kagome said as she jogged to the opening in the fence. Into the school, and up the stairs. Opening the door for the woman she closed it behind her and locked it up. Walking over to her fire she snapped her fingers causing a friction of pink light fall from her fingers and into the wood. The wood took some time to give a soft glow of fire on the roof top. “Come, sit by the fire.” The woman did as Kagome said, removing the back pack on the chair before she took a seat.
“I’m Kagome.” Looking up to the woman she crossed
her legs and sat on the roof top close to the fire, setting her bow
and quiver next to her. Never letting it get too far from her.Alone in the dark
“Sango.” The woman replied keeping her eyes one the fire.
Kagome took the moment to see Sango. She wore a black zip up hoodie that hugged her body, and black straight pants, and boots that laced up to her ankles. Her straight long black hair carefully tied back into a pony tail flowed down her back, and her strong, but soft curves that made up her face showed a kind face, and dark brown eyes that finally looked back to her. “It’s nice to meet you Sango.” Kagome said softly hoping to break the ice.
Sango nodded and then asked. “Where did you learn your powers?”
Shrugging she placed her hands out to the fire to feel the warmth. “The school’s library has some old tales about the priestess’ of the past and some of their abilities. My gramps use to say that I was a decedent.” Giving a small chuckle. “I thought he was some crazy old man.” Looking back to the woman. “The only weapon I knew how to use was a bow, because of archery class. It took me months to realize I could release the soul.” Biting her lower lip she looked to Sango. “Like you saw tonight, once the head is shot threw, the soul is devoured to try and keep the body alive, but so quickly it is gone.” Nodding to herself she sighed. “Thanks for saving me back there.”
Sango just watched her and nodded. “Yeah, you too.”
They sat in silence for a long time, and soon the sun rose up. Sango Stood at first light and sighed. “Kagome, I..” Looking off the rooftop she struggled with something. “You have a nice place up here. Feels safe.”
“Yeah, it keeps me alive.” Giving a small smile up to the woman. Sad that she would leave so soon. It had been a long time since she had sat with someone.
“If you want. I come from a camp. We have people, food, and shelter.” Sango looked down at her then looked off into the sunlight. “I mean, if you would want to…”
Kagome stood and looked around. She felt safe here. Her sanctuary, but it was so lonely. “I would like to come.” Whipping her hands on her dark blue jeans before shoving them into her green dingy pull over hoodie.
Sango smiled and nodded. “Gather up supplies. We will carry as much as we can, and fast.”
