Chapter 9
That Ghost…
I sighed to myself the fiftieth time that night. I looked up from the corner of the room where I was sitting, hugging my legs to my chest, and stared at the lump in the jumbled covers where Inuyasha was lightly snoring. I closed my eyes and turned my head to the side. So many questions were all stacked up in my head, not very neatly either. The number one question that I wasn’t completely sure about was:
What did Inuyasha mean to me?
Why was he so important to me now? I can’t stop thinking of him. Maybe it’s because I’m in this room all day and it reminds me of him? Great, another question to the stack. But, I think I knew that one. The answer was no. Sometimes he would get out of my head but then another thought always reminded me of him and he just whooshes into my mind once again. I sighed again and laid my forehead against my knees.
I was so pathetic. This man just walks into my life and magically out of no where he’s the reason of my whole cursed existence. I never felt this way. Confused, irritated, puzzled, and some others I wouldn’t even bother thinking about because I knew they would just make this all worse for me. I looked over at Inuyasha again and smiled slightly. I got up slowly and walked over to the his bedside, leaving blurry foot sized patches on the floor as they disappeared in a couple seconds.
I looked down at him, brushing his long, uneven, bangs from his forehead lightly. He mumbled something to low for me to hear. I thought I heard ‘math book’. I sat down on the bed slowly, stroking his long silver hair, enjoying the silky feeling. Was it just my imagination or did I just see his brow twitch a small bit? His hand was over mine in one quick movement. I gasped and he opened one eye lazily to look up at me. He smiled slightly and closed his eye. I blushed, embarrassed, from being caught while watching him and stroking his hair while he slept.
“Keep doing that, it was relaxing.” He mumbled sleepily. I slightly smiled and stroked his hair, moving my hand slowly up and down and then rested it on his furry ear. I grabbed it softly between my thumb and finger and rubbed it gently. His lip twitched and he pressed his lips tightly together, probably fighting back a moan or something…. I laughed quietly and he peeked at me again questioningly. I grinned down at him, he smiled back shyly.
“Did I wake you up?” I asked him. He smiled sleepily up at me.
“No, not really. I just had a dream. Didn’t really end so good though,” I raised my brow in question at him.
He pressed his lips into a tight line and one side of his mouth pulled down, “I was first on an island called Video Game Paradise-” I cut him off laughing in a hushed, loud, whisper. He grinned up at me and turned over, bouncing the bed a bit, and sat up on one elbow with his hand supporting his head to look at me. “So, I was playing a really awesome game and then flying math books came out of no where and chased me away from Video Game Paradise.” he pouted “The worst part is, I was about to beat the video game I was playing.” He sulked like a little kid and I laughed again.
He laughed with me for a while and then we just stared at each other for a second.
“So what‘s the whole real story from almost the beginning?” He asked after a second. I look down at my hands and then back up at him.
“I had my Mother, my little brother Souta, and my grandfather.” I frowned down at my hands. “My father wasn’t really around much because he went around selling things, once in a while he‘d send us a lot of his earned money. My mother didn’t exactly look like me, people always said I looked more like my father. I sometimes got irritated by that. You see, since my father was never around, I always was mad at him for not ever coming home until one day we got a letter that he had been killed on one of his little journeys. I broke down crying,” I sighed, “I really didn’t know why, since I despised him. But, when I had heard the news my chest started hurting so much.” I laid my hand over my chest staring at the other hand in my lap. “My little brother was always so energetic,” I laughed a bit remembering him when he used to bounce around this very room. “He always loved to play games.
“And my grandfather, oh! How much he loved to tell all these old boring stories. So sometimes when I couldn’t sleep I’d ask him to tell me one of his stories and I would quickly fall unconscious out of boredom.” We both laughed in hushed whispers. “I met HIM,” - I over emphasized the word ’him’ - “When I had escaped the houses grounds for a day. I had helped a little boy get a banana from one of the market tables and the store man had caught me and had almost cut my hand off when someone behind me pulled my hood down.” I grimaced at the memory, “The store man gasped and quickly let go of me, bowing, and said ’I am so very sorry, Miss.’ I hated it when everyone did that. They acted like I was royalty just because my family was the richest in the whole town.
“I looked behind at my savior and it was none other then…Naraku.” I spit his name out in disgust, glaring down at my hands, “I got to know him, he helped me get back into my house grounds without my mother or one of the servants noticing. I thanked him and every day I would sneak out again to see him,” I glared even harder at my hands now, “Then one day I told my mother I was bringing Souta with me to go out. When I came back home I brought Naraku with me.
“My mother liked him and then after that day asked about what I thought of marrying him,” I looked up at Inuyasha’s eyes, which were hard and cold, “I told her I wasn’t sure at the moment. So everyday I would go to see him and every day we grew closer and closer, or so I thought. He always liked walking around in public holding my waist while everyone stared,” We both stared at each other disgusted, “So when he asked me to marry him I said yes. And…the very next day, I left to go get something in the market when one of the servants from the house came running to me and yelling breathlessly ‘Your brother, and grandfather are dead! Naraku killed them!’ I stared at her for a moment, not exactly believing her at all ’Your mother is still running!’
“And, as if almost right on cue, I heard a bloodcurdling scream echo down the small cobble stoned road that lead to the huge house. I dropped my basket and ran. When I got there everything was quiet. And I’m sure you could guess what happened next.” I finished looking down at my hands again.
He snorted lightly and I stared up at him bewildered “Didn’t your mom ever tell you never to talk to strangers? Nonetheless fall in love with one?” He teased me. I scowled at him playfully.
“Well, love at first sight really is frustrating.” We looked up at each other then and blushed looking away.
“You should really go to sleep.” I mused. He pursed his lips and then grabbed the covers and laid down. He yawned loudly and pulled me down with him. I gasped and he held me close to his hard, warm, chest. He buried his face in my hair and inhaled deeply. I was a bit stiff in his arms and then relaxed after a while, feeling a bit comfortable.
I snuggled closer and closed my eyes, trying to relax. After a moment I heard Inuyasha start lightly snoring again, I laughed quietly to myself. The whole night I listened to his little nightmare of running away from evil flying math text books.
