`It's not right' Kagome was currently pacing around the courtyard situated in the middle of the castle. `Why should he have to die? What did he do wrong?' Memories of the past couple days came back to her.
Inuyasha had looked so fragile when he woke up, even if he didn't act it. She remembered his appearance when morning came and when he had used her as a hostage. `Even that isn't that bad… all he did was try to keep alive. If he hadn't have done that I would have screamed and he'd still be there.'
Then she remembered her father's face. “Don't worry, that filth won't live for much longer.” His words came back to her and she shuddered. She had never seen her father that way and hoped to never have to see him like that again. `He couldn't have known him right? Then why would he be so hostile to him…wait…he couldn't be prejudice could he?'
“In my experience it's better to not know. Worrying about being killed every day isn't fun” `Inuyasha said that but that can't be true for everyone. Is it because he's a half-demon? Is that so bad?' She couldn't believe her father could be prejudice against him for stupid reasons. How could he help what he was born as?
`I'll get my answers, I need to know everything.' She had seen the cell he was unceremoniously tossed into. There was a window in the top right corner that she recognized as being on the outskirts of the gardens. She turned and started to make her way to get the answers she desperately needed.
Pain. That's all he registered as he slowly came to. `Heh. I have to stop getting hurt. I'll die in a few days if this keeps up.' He looked around at his surroundings. It was damp and dark the only light was a torch outside his cell. A guard sat under it sleeping soundly.
He struggled to get up but gave up on it. What was the point? He couldn't attempt an escape in this condition. `Damn it all. If I only had my sword I could be out of here.'
“You're awake, huh?” He looked to the source of the noise and saw the girl he had dragged around the castle in order to get out kneeling by the window.
He turned to face her. “Come to gawk at me?” She shook her head.
“No, I just want to know why didn't you…you know…I mean you threatened to…” He chuckled at this.
“Even half-breeds have honour. I wouldn't kill some helpless girl.” She felt her anger rise at the word “helpless” but didn't respond. “So…why did you come then?”
She looked at him, “I just wanted to apologize for you being in this mess.” He stared at her incredulously. “If I had listened to you, you wouldn't be set for execution for no reason.”
Missing the part about execution, he replied “Apologize? What do you mean apologize? I threaten to kill you and you apologize?”
“You said you would but…you didn't I realize now that you would've been in trouble if I had made any noise.” She smiled shyly. “I guess I feel a little guilty about all of this”
He shook his head. “What do you mean? I'm a half demon; anything bad happens it's my fault. I've been chased out of countless places because some old man stubs his foot and after this whole mess YOU apologize?”
“What's wrong with being a half-demon?” He looked at her with the same incredulous stare she was getting tired of. “I mean I've heard of monsters but you're not like them at all. If you were I'd be dead right now. You're actually sorta nice”
“Keh! Naïve little thing aren't you? I'm not nice.” Putting emphasis on not, “I just do what I need to do in order to survive and killing a princess wouldn't help my case now would it?”
She stared at him solemnly. “Those stories… do you believe them?” Before he could say anything she looked at him and asked. “Did you…try to help that village you saved?”
He turned away with a snort. “Fucking human emotions are going get me killed someday.”
She stood up and turned. “The way I see it you're nothing close to a monster and I don't think you deserve to die.” She walked away to find her father.
She was almost at the gates leading out of the gardens when a rustle in the bushes caught her eye. She looked over to see two green demon eyes looking at her. “Who's there?” Her voice quaked not knowing what to expect.
Slowly and quietly a small fox kit crawled out. She mistook his slow movements for caution before she noticed a sword on his back. “You. Do you know where I can find a person by the name of Inuyasha?”
“Inuyasha? Are you a friend of his?” The kit nodded slowly panting from the exertion of lugging the sword this far. “He's in the dungeon right now. Is that his?” She gestured to the sword on his back.
“Yeah, he tried to help the village that was attacked. Please forget you saw me and let me get this to him.” She noticed a hint of tears in his eyes. “If I don't my parents would never forgive me.”
“Were your parents in that village?” When he nodded, she instantly understood. His parents were dead and Inuyasha must have tried to help them. With sudden conviction, she snatched the sword up and turned to leave.
“Wait! Please I need to do this! He's not that bad!” She stopped and turned to face him gesturing for him to come.
“I'll help you bring it to him. Don't worry I'm on your side.” She smiled. With that they both made they're way back to the window.
Shaking his body testing for anything else that wasn't fully healed, he stood up and stretched. `No humans are going to keep me down. Heh!' He looked around trying to find a way out. Hearing footsteps he turned to see the king walking with a few guards. In the front of them was the guard who'd gotten brave and shot him.
“Get in there you! This is for endangering the princess's life!” The man was roughly shoved in the cell as the bolt of the door closed. The king turned to see his other prisoner glaring at him.
“So you're still walking half-breed.” He sneered at him. “Good…I plan on having a lot of fun with you. 3 days vermin…” He held up three fingers. “3 days and then your miserable existence ends.”
“Keh! Awfully brave making threats when I'm behind bars aren't you?” He grinned as the king began to get angry. “I don't intend to be here for long though. I'll be gone by tonight.”
“Don't even try to make me laugh you bastard.” He walked up closer to the cell looking a whole lot braver than he felt. “No one has ever escaped from here.”
“Good, then you'll remember it when I do get out of here.” He spun around smirking at the smell of the king's anger.
“How dare you turn your back on me! Bow down and show respect to your betters!” He bellowed as he walked up to the bars, his face an inch away from the bars. “Maybe your filthy mother didn't have any matters but…”
He never got to finish. In a flash of movement human eyes can not follow, Inuyasha spun around claws outstretched and with a snarl, raked them up the right side of the king's face. “How dare you speak of my mother you bastard!” He roared as the king backed away with a hand over a long gash up the side of his face.
Snarling he rammed the bars that were in between him and the man who would dare insult his mother. They groaned under the impact as he continued bashing them completely devoid of thought. He was stopped by the guards rushing forward to stop him with their spears.
The king stared at him in anger through his left eye. “Strike me you filth! You don't even deserver to exist.” He motioned to the guards. “Come! I can't stand the sight any longer let's go.”
Inuyasha watched as he retreated in a half-walk, half-scamper motion. Calming himself down, he sat down at the back of the cell, under the window. The scent of fox hit him and he looked up to see the smiling face of the kit he'd saved just yesterday.
“Inuyasha! Are you ok?” He snorted.
“Keh! Some weak humans can't do anything to me. How'd you get in anyways?”
“I snuck in during the changing of the guard. This girl helped me find you.” He gestured to Kagome as she stood there face ashen. Trembling in her hand was a small mirror she must have used to witness what was going on without being caught.
“Hey, girl!” she slowly moved her head down to look at him. “I ain't sorry for damaging you're asshole of a father's face.” She shook her head.
“I don't know why my father would say those things” she breathed. “He's never acted like that, even towards those who wished the kingdom harm.” He stood up and walked up to the bars to stare quizzically at her. “I'm sorry about that.” She trailed off with sadness in her eyes.”
Getting just a little uncomfortable at her constant apologies he remarked, “Doesn't matter just give me that sword and I won't speak of it again.” He stretched out his hand to her. Remembering what brought her here again she hesitantly handed him the sword. He pulled it back with a grin.
Unsheathing it he looked the keen blade over with a grin. He looked up towards her and the kit, now seated on her shoulder to get a better view. “Step back if you don't want to get hurt.” After they heeded his warning, he raised the sword over his head before cutting clean through the metallic bars.
